00:00Bill Murray has expressed his deep admiration for the students of Marjory
00:03Stoneman Douglas High School and says that they remind him of the youth who
00:07rallied to end the Vietnam War. In a recent op-ed for NBC News, the actor noted
00:11that we live in interesting times and he was blown away by the activism of young
00:15people all pulling toward a single goal, gun control. The movement was sparked
00:19after a gunman opened fire at Stoneman Douglas on February 14, killing 17 people
00:23and wounding more than a dozen others. Murray said,
00:30anti-gun protests, that it really was the students that began the end of the
00:33Vietnam War. It was the students who made all the news and that noise started and
00:38then the movement wouldn't stop. The actor-comedian believes the noise the
00:41students are making now will get results. Murray pointed out,
01:00Though some people thought losing the Vietnam War would be disastrous for the
01:05country at the time, Murray noted that it wasn't.
01:08For children to be concerned about going to school, worried about what could happen to
01:12them at school, it's just a horrible place for us to be at. The thing that's so
01:16powerful about students is that when you haven't had your idealism broken yet,
01:20you're able to speak from a place that has no confusion, where there is a clear set of
01:25values. Murray continued,
01:26But there are idealists left over the age of 18. I'm sure of it.
01:30Idealism is a voice that's inside you. It's your conscience. That can really
01:34deteriorate along the way, depending on the road that you follow, and it can become
01:37almost dysfunctional. But it's there. Everyone has it. Sometimes it's just a
01:42whisper, but in some people it's a shout. Head to the comments and let us know
01:46what you think of Bill Murray's op-ed piece praising the incredible students
01:49fighting for gun control. For The Hollywood Reporter News, I'm Lindsay Rodriguez.
