00:00I thought you were going to say, how are the stakes higher for us?
00:02And I'm like, well, I'm out of a job.
00:05The stakes have never been higher.
00:08We need people to love this season.
00:10Please watch our show.
00:20Hey, we're the cast of Upload with Hollywood Reporter at Comic-Con 2025.
00:25And me.
00:26That's true. We're the cast of Upload and Greg Daniels, the creator of Upload.
00:30This is your first Comic-Con with Upload, right?
00:33Yes.
00:34What's it like being here celebrating the final season of the show, but at Comic-Con for the first time?
00:39We were supposed to come for season one, so this is kind of a really, as Andy just put in our panel,
00:45this is a really nice send-off for the final season.
00:46A lot of people don't know this, but there was a pandemic that happened.
00:49And we were very aware.
00:512020, we were affected.
00:55No one else was.
00:57It was devastating.
00:58Well, season one came out like May 2020, right?
01:02So really, the early days of the pandemic, I feel like it was, for me, the first season of, you know, early pandemic binge.
01:08We had a literal captive audience.
01:10Yes.
01:11Everybody had just finished Tiger King, and they moved on to us.
01:14Mm-hmm.
01:15You know, something a little different.
01:16Palate cleanser.
01:17But here you are now with season four.
01:21How does it feel to end the show, but to give all your characters, you know, end the show, Greg, for you, a proper send-off?
01:27Oh, thank you.
01:28Mic me.
01:29Mic me.
01:30It was so meaningful.
01:31I mean, when pitching the show, it felt like a four-season show, and there was all this question of pacing yourself, and how do you tell such an intense story that needs a beginning, middle, and end, and make sure that you get an end?
01:45Because a lot of times in streaming, you find out that, oop, that was it, and so we were really excited to be able to have the end that was always envisioned, and craft all of the character stories so that it seems meaningful, and not that it is meaningful, it just seems meaningful, and, you know, and it was just, it was a very good, happy time for us to be able to do it.
02:08Oh, my God, my arm.
02:09Okay.
02:10And for you as a cast, what does it mean to get to give endings to these characters in season four, and also, how does it feel to end the show?
02:19Careful what you ask, because crying will come.
02:22Yeah, don't ask Allegra anything about the ending.
02:25Really tap into how it feels for it to end.
02:31Okay, okay, I get it, I get it, I'll keep it in.
02:33It feels like a gift, like Greg said, you sometimes don't have that assurance that you're going to get the closure or the conclusion that you would hope for these characters that you've grown to love so much, so that is a blessing, and then it feels surreal to be ending, but also so great to know, so that we can really savor it and enjoy it with each other.
02:54Last season ended on a major cliffhanger, which Nathan is left.
02:59What can you tease about how that will be resolved in season four?
03:02What do you think it will be resolved?
03:08One, right.
03:09No comment on, yeah, one's getting married, one of them's getting married.
03:15One of them's dead.
03:16One of them's dead.
03:17Which one are you today?
03:19Yes.
03:21Yes.
03:21And how are the stakes just higher for all of these characters in season four?
03:26I thought you were going to say, how are the stakes higher for us?
03:29And I'm like, well, I'm out of a job.
03:32The stakes have never been higher.
03:35We need people to love this season.
03:37Please watch our show.
03:39The story, you know, is about, it's set in the year 2035, and while we were crafting what was going on, part of the arc is that,
03:51the artificial intelligence that's inside the world of Lakeview of the digital afterlife is getting more and more sophisticated,
03:59and we are, like, racing to catch up to the actual sophistication of AI now,
04:05and there's a big storyline in this season of just about what happens when the AI is all profit-oriented
04:12and starts to get self-aware, and it becomes very existential for her.
04:18It never really struck me how right you've been in several seasons.
04:23We got to hope you're not, we got to hope you're not right again this season.
04:28I wanted to ask about that, because, yeah, when the show premiered in 2020, chat, GPT didn't exist yet.
04:35AI is not where it's at now.
04:37How surreal does it feel that AI has evolved the way it has?
04:40Do you feel like the show has kind of predicted where things might go?
04:44In a lot of ways, yeah.
04:45We've talked about things like, when we started, we were making jokes about vape lung,
04:50about vaping being bad for you, and then very quickly it came out,
04:54oh, there is a condition, and then, you know, the self-driving cars that we have in the background
04:59look exactly like Waymo's, and...
05:023D printing food, that's going on now.
05:05So there's a lot of stuff, and I still keep thinking that the actual core concept
05:10of uploading your consciousness is still several years away, but you never know.
05:14Yeah, it may be in a few years that this comedy is looked back upon as a drama.
05:20Because all of these things...
05:22No, actually a documentary.
05:23Yeah, a documentary.
05:24It was like the time before, when it was actually at 2035.
05:28Upload becomes like The Simpsons.
05:30We're looking back to be like, oh, what was it predicting?
05:33Yeah.
05:34Yeah.
05:34We had Kamala Harris in a poster that we shot in 2017.
05:39She was vice president, right?
05:40Oprah was...
05:41She was running for election with Oprah.
05:45Allegra, for you, we see a more vulnerable side of Ingrid in the season 3 finale.
05:50Are we going to see more of that in season 4?
05:53No, she's going to reset back to factory mode.
05:57Yeah, I think so.
05:59I think we're going to see some more vulnerability.
06:01I think she's coming into herself more because she's learning how good it is to be honest
06:08with herself and with other people.
06:10And I think she's realizing that the meat of her relationship with this person that she
06:15loves so much has to be based on something real, you know?
06:19So yeah, I think we're going to see some more vulnerable Ingrid.
06:21One of the things I really love that we saw at the very end of season 3 is this friendship
06:27between Nora and Ingrid developing because they are really put into tough circumstances
06:33together and they don't know what's going to happen.
06:36And we explore that more.
06:37How will Nora continue to evolve in season 4?
06:40I mean, I feel like she's always been someone that has such a big heart.
06:45And I think that's been her center, her guiding light.
06:51And I think it's hard to say anything without giving something away.
06:59But I think we get to see her show up.
07:03Do you want me to answer this?
07:04Yeah.
07:05Do you mind?
07:07I'd like to hear this.
07:08Yeah.
07:10You know what?
07:11Actually, I will say something that was really fun is there's a scene where Kevin and
07:15I get to be in it together.
07:17And we have never been in a scene together.
07:21Yeah.
07:21Yeah.
07:22At all.
07:23I don't know this man.
07:24Get ready for some fireworks.
07:27But it's so exciting.
07:29So I think she gets to be in different spaces and also grow in a way that just owning the
07:36decision she's made and coming to peace with some of them.
07:41I think there's a lot of peace.
07:42I think in a way that Nora was growing or hmm.
07:48Yeah.
07:48Help me, Greg.
07:48Is it that we really packed a lot into it's a four episode season, but it's longer than
07:55a movie.
07:56It's like two and a half hours long.
07:57And there's tons of twists and turns.
08:00And there's new things that we're exploring, like this longevity spa for billionaires becomes
08:06a thing and workload becomes a thing.
08:07So if you're like a fan of the show, you get to see a lot of new ideas as well as wrapping
08:13up all of their meaningful stories.
08:15And before you go, we're going to do a quick bucket question.
08:18I'm going to grab the bucket.
08:20You're going to pick one and then everybody can answer it of our fun Comic Con bucket questions.
08:24There's a bucket.
08:26Crypto popcorn bucket.
08:27Oh, me?
08:29Yeah, that felt right.
08:30Yeah, it's got to be you.
08:31Oh, okay.
08:32I like this one.
08:33Of course I like this one.
08:34You ready?
08:35What is it?
08:36What's the best TV theme song ever?
08:39Bonus points if you sing it.
08:46Right?
08:47Star Trek?
08:48No, this is good.
08:49This is name that tune.
08:50This is really good.
08:51How's ours go?
08:52I know this one.
08:59Thank you for being a friend.
09:00Yeah, do it.
09:01Sing it.
09:01Do it.
09:01Do that one.
09:02Thank you for being a friend.
09:06Running down the road and back again.
09:09Okay.
09:09Your heart is true.
09:11You're a friend and a confidant.
09:16If you're through a body.
09:18Golden Girls.
09:19I have one.
09:20See if you can guess it.
09:21Okay.
09:22Cruising on down Main Street.
09:24You're relaxed and feeling good.
09:26Next thing that you notice, it's a woo-hoo-hoo octopus in the neighborhood.
09:30Oh, my God.
09:31What?
09:32Surfing on a sound wave.
09:33Swinging through the stars.
09:34Magic school bus.
09:35Left into an intestine.
09:37Take your second ride fast, boys, on the magic school bus.
