00:00Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke has revealed that just as the HBO series was
00:03taking off, she was battling serious health issues. Now, the actress is opening up
00:08about surviving two life-threatening aneurysms and the dark times that
00:12followed in an emotional new essay for The New Yorker. She wrote that after a
00:16headache turned into unbearable pain and she got violently ill, she was taken to
00:20the hospital and told she needed emergency surgery to seal off a brain
00:24aneurysm. Clarke says the operation left her in terrible pain and she began
00:28suffering from aphasia, the inability to understand and express speech. She
00:32revealed that her recovery brought her to some dark places, even asking the
00:36medical staff to let her die during her lowest moments. However, the aphasia
00:40passed after one week, but when she was released from the hospital, doctors
00:43warned her that she had a smaller aneurysm that could pop at any moment. The
00:47recovery process continued as she did press for the first season of Game of
00:50Thrones. The actress revealed that to get through the pain, I sipped on morphine
00:54in between interviews. Then, in 2013, Clarke learned that the aneurysm had
00:58doubled in size and she had to get another operation. But it didn't go as
01:03planned. She wrote,
01:04When they woke me, I was screaming in pain. The procedure had failed. I had a
01:09massive bleed and the doctors made it plain that my chances of surviving were
01:12precarious if they didn't operate again immediately. Clarke spent yet another
01:16month in the hospital dealing with terrible pain, saying she had lost all hope. But the
01:21actress revealed, in the essay, in the years since my second surgery, I have healed
01:25beyond my most unreasonable hopes. I am now at 100 percent. As the final season of
01:30her HBO show gets ready to premiere on April 14th, Clarke says, there is something
01:34gratifying and beyond lucky about coming to the end of Thrones. For much more from
