Alex Trebek, the host of 'Jeopardy!' who for more than three decades was the man with the answers — all in the form of a question, of course — has died. He was 80.

00:00Alex Trebek, the beloved host of Jeopardy! since 1984, has died. He was 80.
00:06The show confirmed the news on social media, writing,
00:08Jeopardy! is saddened to share that Alex Trebek passed away peacefully at home early this morning,
00:14surrounded by family and friends. Thank you, Alex.
00:17In March 2019, the game show icon revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
00:23I'm going to fight this, and I'm going to keep working.
00:26In the weeks following his stunning announcement, hundreds of thousands of messages of support
00:30and encouragement were sent to the host. He said he read them all.
00:34In May 2019, Trebek told Good Morning America this about the outpouring of love he received from fans.
00:39After you're dead, people say, oh, he was such a good guy, we really liked him,
00:44but I'm getting that all before that event, so it makes me feel really, really good.
00:50George Alexander Trebek was born on July 22, 1940, in Ontario, Canada.
00:56He began his career in broadcasting at CBC Radio while he was still a senior in college at the University of Ottawa.
01:02After graduation, he shifted to television and hosted a live teen music show in Canada.
01:07The charismatic Trebek landed his first game show gig in 1966 in Canada.
01:12After hosting several shows in Canada and then the U.S., Trebek was hired to host and produce
01:17Merv Griffin's revival of Jeopardy! in 1984.
01:21The game show originally ran on NBC from 1964 to 1975 and 1978 to 1979.
01:28Trebek collected seven daytime Emmys from 34 nominations and a Peabody Award for his work
01:33on the Sony Pictures television game show.

01:48Hollywood was quick to pay tribute to Trebek on social media.

01:56I remember going to the set to watch him tape a show before I started my TV career.
