00:00From Breaking Bad to Game of Thrones, The Hollywood Reporter critics have put together an extensive list of the 50 best TV shows of the 21st century.
00:08And right now, we're breaking down where some of your favorites landed on the list.
00:13First up at number 50, we have Sex and the City.
00:16Sex and the City may have technically debuted in the 90s, but the groundbreaking HBO dramedy defined the early 2000s.
00:23THR says the show inspired a generation of millennials who imprinted themselves on the show at a young age
00:28and dreamed of moving to Manhattan to live a life of glamorous brunches and shopping sprees.
00:34However, the show actually highlighted their struggles.
00:36No one fantasizes about being lost in their 30s and beyond.
00:40Audiences were always meant to relate to and learn from these complex women.
00:44Oh, a burger broke up with me on a Post-it.
00:47On a Post-it?
00:48Uh-huh, uh-huh.
00:50Yep.
00:51Read it and weep, my friends.
00:54I'm sorry I can't.
00:55Don't hate me.
00:57At number 30, we have Game of Thrones.
01:00THR says no show defined the 2010s better than Thrones.
01:04Co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss crafted a darkly sociopolitical high-fantasy literary adaptation
01:10that brought sex, gore, and climate disaster to a genre typically populated with frolicking elves and wise dragons.
01:17Adding, say what you will about the disappointingly rushed final season,
01:20at least Benioff and Weiss actually concluded a story that author George R.R. Martin likely never will.
01:26Bringing it all the way to number 16, we have Breaking Bad.
01:46THR notes that few transformations are more breathtaking than the one undertaken by Walter White,
01:52played by Bryan Cranston, who starts Breaking Bad as a struggling chemistry teacher and ends it as a legendary drug kingpin.
01:59Breaking Bad delivers delicious twists and high-wire thrills,
02:02all wrapped up in a portrait of wounded masculinity as damning as it could be alluring.
02:07I am the danger.
02:09A guy opens his door and gets shot, and you think that of me?
02:12No.
02:13I am the one who knocks.
02:15Cracking the top three, at number three, we have Succession.
02:18In a show like Succession, with such morally corrupt characters,
02:21there is no one to root for, no thing to root for.
02:24All of it is seemingly bad.
02:25And yet, as THR calls it, the show's dazzling virtuosity draws us in in spite of ourselves.
02:31Take a step back, and Succession starts to look like a skeleton key for understanding how and why our capitalist society feels broken.
02:39It'd be unbaringly upsetting if it weren't so bleakly hilarious.
02:42Or is it the other way around?
02:44I'm gonna build something better.
02:47Something faster, lighter, meaner, wilder.
02:50And I'm gonna do it from in here, whether you are, you f***ing pirates!
02:59At number two, The Sopranos.
03:02The show that created the formula that ushered in the modern golden age of television,
03:07Tony Soprano became the ultimate antihero to root for.
03:10Without him, there is no Don Draper, Walter White, Vic Mackey, or countless other complicated protagonists.
03:16THR notes,
03:17Perhaps there is no HBO as we know it today without the cinematic revolution The Sopranos brought to the small screen.
03:24Did you do it?
03:25No.
03:26Did you f***ing do it?
03:27No.
03:29Did you f***ing do it?
03:30I said no!
03:32Now get your f***ing hands off.
