There’s a new public enemy No. 1 among theater owners and some Hollywood studio executives: Andrew Cuomo. The New York governor, who generally has received praise for his handling of the pandemic, so far has refused to let theaters open.

00:04year, U.S. movie theaters are staring down their worst-case scenario for 2020. According to theater
00:10owners and some Hollywood studio executives, Andrew Cuomo is to blame. The New York governor,
00:15who generally has received praise for his handling of the pandemic, so far has refused to let theaters
00:20open even as indoor restaurants, casinos, and gyms are allowed to open in the state.
00:25Cineworld took direct aim at Cuomo, saying that studios won't dare release another big tentpole
00:30without New York, following the lackluster performance of Christopher Nolan's Tenet,
00:34which is the first big-budget event movie to brave the waters in the COVID-19 era.
00:49John Vithian, the president and CEO of the National Association of Theater Owners, said,
00:55CEOs on a conference call. He wouldn't schedule it. And there are very senior Hollywood executives
01:00who have placed calls to him and ended up speaking with his staff, not him. Nothing. Crickets. He's
01:06put us in a category with big music concerts. That's absurd. A senior advisor to Cuomo responded
01:11to the criticism in a statement, saying,
01:13We understand some people are unhappy, but you know what? Better unhappy than sick or worse.
01:18The hope now is that moviegoing will resume in earnest in the first quarter of 2021.
