00:00George Clooney is loudly calling for President Joe Biden to step aside.
00:04On Wednesday, the New York Times op-ed section published an essay from the actor and director,
00:09where he forcefully argues for President Biden to end his campaign for re-election
00:13and allow a new candidate to take on Donald Trump in November.
00:17Clooney, who has starred in and directed several politically-minded films over his career,
00:21began by expressing his admiration for the current president.
00:24He wrote,
00:25I love Joe Biden.
00:26As a senator, as a vice president, and as president,
00:29I consider him a friend, and I believe in him, believe in his character, believe in his morals.
00:34In the last four years, he's won many of the battles he's faced.
00:38Buddy went on to bluntly share that the Biden he spent time with at a recent fundraiser
00:42is not the same man who won in 2020,
00:44and instead the man America witnessed during the June 27th debate.
00:48Clooney wrote of Biden's recent debate performance,
00:50Was he tired? Yes.
00:52A cold? Maybe.
00:53But our party leaders need to stop telling us that 51 million people didn't see what we just saw.
00:58We're also terrified by the prospect of a second Trump term that we've opted to ignore every warning sign.
01:04He continued,
01:05The George Stephanopoulos interview only reinforced what we saw the week before.
01:09As Democrats, we collectively hold our breath or turn down the volume whenever we see the president,
01:13who we respect, walk off Air Force One, or walk back to a mic to answer an unscripted question.
01:18The Oscar winner, who was one of Hollywood's more engaged political players, went on to say,
01:23Is it fair to point these things out?
01:25It has to be.
01:26This is about age, nothing more, but also nothing that can be reversed.
01:30We are not going to win in November with this president.
01:33Clooney then floated the idea of several prominent Democrats,
01:36including Wes Moore, Kamala Harris, and Gavin Newsom,
01:39stepping up to lead the ticket in November.
01:40He also suggested that the nominating process at the 2024 Democratic National Convention
01:45could, quote, enliven our party and wake up voters.
01:49He concluded the essay by writing,
01:51Joe Biden is a hero.
01:52He saved democracy in 2020.
01:54We need him to do it again in 2024.
