Transcript
00:00How does it feel to be back here at the Grammys?
00:02It's always great to be here.
00:04It's an amazing night, and, you know, just to be able to see all these artists and, you know, the nominees, like, congratulations to everyone.
00:12Music is just amazing.
00:13So look at what music does, bringing everyone together.
00:17It's amazing.
00:17I just watched The Greatest Night in Pop, the new documentary you're in, about when you recorded We Are the World.
00:23What has the fan response to that documentary been like for you so far?
00:26Oh, my God, my phone has not stopped blowing up, really.
00:28Like, from all over the world.
00:30Like, people are just texting, DMing me, sending messages, like, writing on my website letters, and I just watched it, and, oh, my God.
00:39No, it's been really incredible.
00:41I had no idea, because I hadn't seen the documentary until Monday.
00:45I didn't even know.
00:47Yeah.
00:47What was your reaction when you first watched it on the big screen?
00:51It was amazing.
00:52I loved the things that I didn't know about after I left, and then towards the end,
00:58and then I just cried.
00:59All of them being such a big hit.
01:00Yeah.
01:00What do you remember most about that night?
01:03Well, for one, the most about that night was how nervous I was to play the American Music Awards,
01:10because it was my first time ever being a solo artist, and that was a big deal,
01:14and because Dick Clark, it was a big deal that I wanted them to turn the lights out,
01:18because I had my glow sticks, and it's like, you have to turn the lights out in order for them to work,
01:23and they're like, we can't do that.
01:24It's national television, so they waited.
01:26If you watched that, they waited until they went on to turn the lights off, so it was a big deal,
01:30and then you can't look in the front because you see all of these amazing people that were in the audience.
01:36You get nervous, and it's like, oh, my God.
01:38So that was scary enough, and then going to there, but I knew a lot, maybe half of the artists there at We Are the World,
01:46yeah, at the taping, recording, but it was a lot of fun, a lot of fun.
01:51The whole story of that night is just really unbelievable,
01:54and it's hard to imagine that we'd be able to get artists today together like that,
01:59after a show like the American Music Awards or the Grammys.
02:02It wouldn't happen, no, no.
02:04Everyone has too many, like, you've got like 10 people hanging out with you,
02:09and to be told, stay in the other room, just the artists, that's not going to happen, no.
02:14I know.
02:14That was an interesting detail that no publicists, no managers in the room, just the artists.
02:19Yeah, no, and it was so cool because there was no drama, really.
02:22I mean, there were some things that were happening, but we were all tired.
02:25You know, I had been up three days before I got there, and we were still out on the Purple Rain tour,
02:29so by 4 o'clock or so, I left.
02:32I was done, yeah.
02:34So many iconic artists are featured in the documentary and were on the song,
02:37but who are some new artists today that you've been loving their music?
02:42Oh, man.
02:44I'm not going to pick like one or two.
02:46Of course, I love Billie Eilish, but I'm not going to pick one or two
02:49because I'm really excited about the new music that's coming out and the change,
02:53and I love that, you know, people being created, and it's exciting, you know.
02:58We're not staying at the same place.
03:00Things are moving, so that's what I love about it.
03:03And you have a new song coming out.
03:05What can you tell me about it?
03:06Yeah, Gloria Estefan sang on it.
03:09It's a Celia Cruz song, a famous Celia Cruz song called Bemba Coloral,
03:13and it comes out February 23rd, and the album comes out April 5th.
03:18It's the first time I've ever done a Salsa record,
03:20so I'm really excited about it because I've never done that.
03:22I have Ruben Blades, Roberto Santarosa, Luis Enrique, Victor Manuel,
03:27Tony Succar, Mimi Succar, my dad, my mom.
03:29I have a lot of people, yeah.
03:31And you've done so many amazing collaborations over the years,
03:34but who's one artist that you haven't gotten the chance to collaborate with yet
03:37that you'd love to?
03:39Probably Bruno Mars.
03:40We've talked about it, yeah, and we're like, we've got to do something.
03:43So we're still talking about it.
03:44I don't know how long.
03:45I'm waiting on him now.
03:47It's the balls in his corner.
03:48I don't know how long.
