01:24For this challenge, we want you to transport us to the year 2125.
01:37Welcome to your avant-garde challenge.
01:46I haven't had experience creating avant-garde.
01:48My aesthetic is a little bit more elegant and timeless.
01:52My interpretation of avant-garde is weird-shaped, over-the-top design.
01:57But to other people, it could be like, oh, what the hell is that?
02:01But I'm hoping I don't get the, what the hell is that?
02:03Because I've been getting, what the hell is that?
02:05Take a look at these cutting edge materials that were created right here at TMU's design and technology lab.
02:12Transparaprint, camo foil, UV foam, and gritted cotton.
02:17This week, you'll be working with them.
02:22The fabrics look amazing, but I've never actually worked with them, so I'm a bit skeptical.
02:29But you won't be century hopping solo.
02:33This week, you're working in...

02:48For this challenge, each team must incorporate two of these printed materials into their designs.

04:23forward I'm more comfortable with the lanes team they're easy to work with I'm
04:29hoping I don't bring them down I'm happy with my team six might be too many cooks
04:34in the kitchen Leland you get first pick of material I'm gonna have to go UV foam
04:39we can do a lot with it create some really cool shapes we're gonna go with
04:44a camo foil I love a thermoplastic so I'm in that means team for you get gritted
04:50cotton each one of you must incorporate both of your team's materials and as a
04:57team the collection must be cohesive got it this is a two-day challenge I'm so
05:03excited to see what the future holds get sketchy all righty let's do it ladies
05:10first pick up models okay no drama just flip them over I feel really confident
05:16with my team avant-garde is one of my favorite things to do but it's a little
05:20scary relying on other people two people are going home this week okay are we
05:24happy with this yeah this is already futuristic the transparent print is even
05:30stiffer than I thought it would be I'm not a fan but the UV foam brings an extra
05:35fun layer playing with light like a royal electric blue but how do you try this
05:42into that and I feel like almost water and earth a hundred percent blue to
05:47represent water brownish transparent print as a birth so the story that we've
05:53come up with is that in a hundred years our resources are finite it's the search
05:58for water and earth it's like a love letter to like the element yeah first
06:03thing I will say I think we should stick with that color palette yes I know that
06:08the grid cotton will be really easy to work with but the foil camouflage might be a
06:11bit tricky it gets very crinkly no matter what you do with it realistically in a
06:16hundred years we could be in a very dystopian military-like world our
06:21inspiration is futuristic dystopianism very bold shoulders very clean lines and
06:27structure I'm seeing this as like a protective fabric like an arbor I want
06:32to make thigh-high boots high-waisted shorts and a jacket with a dramatic
06:37collar I'm envisioning that she's a warrior perfect yeah we're not sure what the
06:44weather is like in the future so I'm thinking about neoprene body suits and
06:49then I wanted to use the UV foam as the parts that would come down they would be
06:54doing the casket yeah I'm so happy with my team we have Charles Leland Foster and
07:01Maya these guys are deadly so little feather the specific reason that I
07:06want to do a part of our team is I think that you'll really kind of come alive
07:09when we have a material that isn't a sewing thing you can create some great
07:13shapes you can do some gluing no you don't just do arts and crafts I don't
07:20want nothing falling off on the runway okay guys dimes up let's go shopping
07:26hey time travelers hey the brief said avant-garde and you guys have to use both of
07:37your materials in each design and keep cohesion top of mine got it yep each of
07:43you have $600 to spend and 30 minutes to shop get going so our colors were going
07:56for bronze black nudes our team's color palette is very earthy browns with
08:01transparent textures what do you think about this for the coat yes I'm creating
08:05a voluminous coat that has transparent material draw attention to the UV foam I
08:10really love that that pink is too pink the pink is way too pink yeah our group is
08:16going with colors from the camo foil because everyone is going for colors I'll
08:21just go for black and incorporate this I'm very comfortable in designing an avant-garde
08:26so I'm making a structured military type blazer with that this is my challenge
08:32I've got this how's it going good picking up the pinks in our collection this fabric
08:38is very elegant what's gonna make it feel futuristic the structure I'm going for a
08:43line skirt with a pointy asymmetrical top it's spaceship couture all right make sure
08:50it's futuristic yeah I need super stress and silver I don't like this challenge I don't do
08:58avant-garde cuts you know and silhouettes but I am making a square shoulder chainmail body armor with
09:07silver fabric so it's protecting my model because it's the end of the world apparently this is amazing
09:15designers you have less than 10 minutes it's not that if you lean into the green in the right way
09:20you think the yellow goes with all this yeah time's up I will see you all back at the workroom
09:27team challenge let's do this team forward let's do it here's our materials oh I can't wait to play with
09:40this whoa this is incredible these materials are ugly I don't I don't like them it's not going to be easy to keep it smooth yeah I'm going to try to keep it as straight as possible I'm so excited me too I've worked with unconventional materials like this gosh I think like when I was in grade 7 at my father's appliance store for some reason a fabric
10:10that spoke to me and now I've become known for my oversized boxy jacket so this jacket has to
10:17be perfect because I would love to be perfect because I would love to finally get that win this week I love this coat
10:24okay you guys what do you think of this structure wow yeah this could be a very costuming cosplay ish challenge and that's my wheelhouse so I'm making a pointed shoulder bustier with a matching sleeve that I'm going to turn into a glove but the real selling point is these giant wide leg pants almost like a gliding Queen Amidala moment this is going to just be like one side of the pant leg and they're going to be really wide
10:52I finally got this whole thing pleated I'm feeling good about my design I'm the only one who hasn't been on the bottom or the top a lot of the work I do is one of a kind pieces so maybe this will be enough to get the judges to notice me I'm going to work faster if I'm going to get things done tonight
11:13so I know this isn't quite an avant-garde look my look is definitely giving futuristic I am making a mosaic corset dress super cool especially with all the metallic details I just have to make sure it looks expensive and not just a craft project

11:44I don't know that this spiral is going to work in the neoprene
11:47could work but you might need to just shorten this area to actually create more of a circular shape

12:53we want to figure out where we can use this in your look okay

25:19I feel amazing I was shooting for something really big and dramatic
25:35and oh my god
25:38I did it
25:39I'm really proud of my outfit this week
25:43my favorite thing about my outfit is that it gives that futuristic feeling that avant-garde look without being a costume
25:48I want to show the judges a bit more of my style and the way I like to create shapes
26:05I love the cut out in the back and the pants are the best thing I've done in this competition
26:17oh this week I feel I really did step up to the plate
26:22I am so proud of my look
26:26I finally get to show the judges the more conceptual side to my designs

26:39this is the best thing I've ever made

26:49this jacket is exactly how I wanted it to look

27:03but I wanted it to feel heavy at the same time

27:23everybody had a really cool concept
27:26they followed through with it
27:27and I think all five of these people are all in the same universe

27:41the skirt is just it's everything
27:43and you can really see all the detail and mosaic work I put into the corset
27:49I probably could have pushed myself a little bit more
27:52however it's definitely giving future so I think I'm alright

28:14it is bold, edgy, unique

28:21to me this is avant-garde
28:26it is bold and out of this world
28:30I wanted to show the judges what I offer to this competition

28:46it's not perfect but it shows my aesthetic
28:50I really love this pants
28:52at least the chainmail bodysuit is perfectly fitted
29:02I'm really proud of this look
29:04I think the pointed skirt and the open vest in the front is perfect
29:08and this fun little cap is just the perfect way to tie it all together
29:11I'm not happy with myself
29:21it's not my best work
29:23the front looks good
29:25it's giving me that avant-garde look that I want
29:29but the back isn't finished
29:34it's yet another thing that I'm not happy with hitting the runway

29:41I am actually really proud of my team
29:47each of us really put so much work into the looks
29:50yes there were some unfinished things with Nemo's dress
29:54but when the seconds count down there's not much you can do

31:04there were a few highlights
31:06we're gonna take a look at some of the top looks from this team

31:12you look so shocked there
31:13I wouldn't consider myself an avant-garde designer
31:16walk us through this avant-garde look
31:18cause your mom looks great
31:20we reference a hundred years ago even today
31:22so I felt that in a hundred years from now
31:24there are things that would still look back upon
31:26tailoring would be one of them
31:28our concept was about the scarcity of resources
31:31and I always find when something is scarce
31:33it's a luxury
31:35so man has this obsession with nature and earth
31:39as you are explaining your design
31:40I'm falling more in love with it
31:43the way the folds flow
31:44it's like really beautiful
31:46really divine
31:47I love the juxtaposition
31:49the structure of the top
31:51and then the fluidity of the bottom
31:53it looks like it fits your model perfectly
31:56you really got it to mold on the body
31:59it was for a different model

32:02but he was a no-show

32:13I specifically wanted to play with angles
32:15shapes and I wanted to do something
32:17that was really non-gendered
32:19I love this silhouette
32:20let's start with the shoulders
32:21shoulders are amazing
32:23there's just kind of a beautiful connection
32:25and symmetry with the lines here
32:27the pleats on the pants are so well executed
32:30it transported me
32:32I immediately started thinking about
32:33what character would this be in a movie
32:34but sometimes I think maybe
32:36is it too costumey
32:38it'll be interesting to see
32:40what comes down the runway from you
32:41in the next few weeks

34:19I am a fan of a stretchy tight catsuit but a glittery fabric I just didn't think was aesthetically pleasing

36:45if you look at someone like leland we've seen this consistent level of craftsmanship i love the cut out of the transparent print it kind of felt like fire i believe that we have a very talented designer here this outfit is absolutely incredible but it did feel a bit
36:54costumey and that is not where we really want to be going with leland i do think this challenge does require a bit of costume what about foster i mean his mom didn't show up when he's under pressure he can actually do better i thought foster did an amazing job
