00:00Singapore will continue to crack down on foreign religious preachers sowing discord and seeking
00:05to divide its pluralistic society, said Acting Minister in Charge of Muslim Affairs Faishal
00:11Ibrahim.
00:12During a recent fireside chat with Malaysian journalist, Faishal, also Singapore's Senior
00:17Minister of State for Home Affairs, said the Singaporean government carefully vets all
00:22religious speakers to ensure their preachings are not divisive.
00:26In 2017, the government barred renowned Islamic preacher Ismail Meng from Zimbabwe and Haslin
00:32Baharim, a Malaysian, from entering Singapore on grounds that their segregationist and divisive
00:37teachings were incompatible with the country's multiracial, multivilligious framework.
00:43Beyond monitoring preachers, Faishal said his ministry is working proactively with the youth
00:49to counter extremism at the grassroots level, including conducting mosque visits and holding
00:54sessions in schools.
00:56Faishal was also asked whether Muslim students and women in schools and uniformed services
01:01should be allowed to wear headscarves and he said engagement sessions with all stakeholders,
01:06including community leaders, will continue.
01:09The Singapore government currently has a no-headscarf policy for public schools and uniformed services,
01:15although nurses were granted an exemption in 2021 after several engagement sessions.
