00:00Mythical King Midas could turn anything into gold. A useful trick, isn't it?
00:07But in Ukraine, a new operation Midas is not a myth.
00:11It's a corruption scandal infuriating Ukrainians,
00:14coming as Russia launches unprecedented strikes on the energy system,
00:19leaving millions facing a dark winter.
00:22It's in that context that Ukraine's anti-corruption bureau, Nabu,
00:26has announced a massive takedown.
00:28Nabu reports that $100 million in funds was laundered.
00:32The money was allegedly collected by demanding 10-15% bribes
00:36from contractors at Energoatom, Ukraine's state nuclear company.
00:41It was a massive operation that took 15 months and 1,000 hours of audio recordings.
00:47But the story is not that simple.
00:49In Kyiv, even the watchdogs are being watched.
00:52In July, Ukraine's state security service, the SBU, launched raids on Nabu.
00:57suspecting Russian infiltration.
01:00Nabu claimed this was an attempt to eliminate its independence, sparking street protests.
01:06Days later, parliaments restored the watchdogs' independence.
01:10The European Commission says this bust proves the anti-graft bodies work.
01:14But with the watchdogs fighting each other, it leaves Brussels with one question.
