Tensions between the United States and Venezuela escalated sharply after Donald Trump claimed during a Thanksgiving address that the U.S. military would soon begin land operations to target alleged Venezuelan drug traffickers, praising American forces and asserting that sea-based smuggling had already been reduced by 85%. His remarks followed a significant U.S. military buildup in the region—including an aircraft carrier group, stealth jets, and thousands of troops—and more than 20 U.S. strikes on vessels since September, strikes that reportedly killed dozens of people, many identified as fishermen rather than traffickers.
