President Donald Trump confirmed on Thursday that one of the two West Virginia National Guard members shot near the White House has died of injuries sustained in the attack. The shooting, which Washington officials described as a targeted assault, took place near 17th and I streets as the soldiers were conducting high-visibility patrols. The suspect, identified by the Department of Homeland Security as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who entered the United States in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome, remains hospitalized after being shot by responding National Guard personnel.

00:00Before we begin, I want to express the anguish and the horror of our entire nation at the
00:05terrorist attack yesterday in our nation's capital, in which a savage monster gunned
00:11down two service members and the West Virginia National Guard, who were deployed as part
00:18of the D.C. task force, which has done such an incredible job.
00:22I mean, until yesterday, we literally had no incidents for many months.
00:26It was the safest place imaginable, and this is a different kind of crime.
00:31This is a really bad crime.
00:33Millions of Americans are praying for those heroes and their families, and I must unfortunately
00:39tell you that just seconds before I went on, right now, I heard that Sarah Beckstrom of
00:47West Virginia, one of the guardsmen that we're talking about, highly respected, young, magnificent
00:55person, started service in June of 2023, outstanding in every way.
01:01She's just passed away.
01:03She's no longer with us.
01:05She's looking down at us right now.
01:08Her parents are with her.
01:10It's just happened.
01:12She was savagely attacked.
01:14She's dead.
01:15She's not with us.
01:17Incredible person.
01:18Outstanding in every single way, in every department.
01:22That's horrible.
01:25As you know, the other young man is fighting for his life.
01:29He's in very bad shape.
01:30He's fighting for his life, and hopefully we'll get better news with respect to him.
01:36And the monster that did this is also in serious condition.
01:45But we won't even talk about him.
01:47As you may know, DHS has confirmed that the suspect is an Afghan national, flown here
01:53by the previous administration, who was such a bad administration.
02:00And I have a picture of a plane.
02:04This is what it looked like when they came in.
02:06It was total bedlam.
02:07Do you remember that period of time?
02:09Total bedlam.
02:11People crammed onto the plane.
02:13And the toughest, meanest, most capable physically got on the plane.
02:19Not the people that we were looking for or that they wanted to bring in.
02:23Here's a picture for you.
02:24Just take a look at that plane standing on top of each other and sitting on top of each
02:29other.
02:30This is what we had under the Biden administration.
02:33That whole thing should have never, ever happened.
02:35They should have left from a different base.
02:37They should have left from Bagram, as you know, and it would have been a much different
02:43story.
02:45But they didn't do that.
02:47And this was a, this was just a rout, just a terrible situation.
02:51I don't know.
02:56I'm sorry.
02:58I can't remember.
03:00I'm sorry, I can be.
03:04I'm sorry.
03:05I can't remember.
03:09I can't remember.
