In the first concrete sign that Broadway is preparing to take a major financial beating, remaining seats to all of the producer's shows will sell at the flat rate of $50 from Thursday through the end of March.
Transcript
00:00Coronavirus concerns have hit Broadway.
00:03Remaining seats for five of the hottest tickets on Broadway
00:05are going for a fraction of their normal price,
00:08selling for just $50 a piece at all performances
00:11through March 29th.
00:12Producer Scott Rudin announced the extraordinary measure
00:15of establishing the deep discount flat rate
00:17for all five of his shows today,
00:20all of which have been playing to sold-out houses
00:22or close to it.
00:23The shows include the long-running smash
00:25The Book of Mormon, blockbuster drama
00:27To Kill a Mockingbird, and the recently opened
00:29revival of West Side Story,
00:31which has been pulling capacity crowds.
00:34Also covered are two plays currently in previews
00:36and off to a strong start at the box office.
00:38Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf,
00:39starring Laurie Metcalf and Rupert Everett,
00:41and the Lehman Trilogy, directed by Sam Mendes.
00:44Standard top prices for those shows are around $200,
00:48which is the norm for Broadway,
00:49with premium tickets going for considerably higher.
00:52Rudin exclusively told The Hollywood Reporter,
00:54my partners and I want the buildings full,
00:56even and especially during this crisis.
00:58And this is the way to ensure it.
01:00I don't want the actors looking into a sea of red velvet.
01:02Nobody wants that.
01:04I want no Deadwood in these buildings.
01:06And my colleagues and I want to give people the chance
01:08to see these shows when they otherwise
01:09might not be able to afford tickets,
01:11or to even get tickets.
01:13The move is a direct response to the uncertainties
01:15gripping the entertainment sector
01:17as the coronavirus situation continues to unfold,
01:20and the number of ticket cancellations starts to climb.
