Kobe Bryant won as Oscar during the 90th Academy Awards for 'Dear Basketball,' the animated short film based on his retirement letter from the NBA.

00:02On Sunday night at the 90th Academy Awards, Kobe Bryant won an Oscar for Dear Basketball,

00:07the short film based on his retirement letter from the NBA.

00:10The retired Lakers superstar was nominated in Best Documentary Short alongside Glenn Keane.

00:14In his acceptance speech, Bryant had this to say of dreams coming true.

00:18I don't know if it's possible. I mean, as basketball players, we're really supposed to shut up and dribble.

00:21The former Lakers superstar's comment was a dig at Fox News personality Laura Ingraham.

00:25Bryant became a household name for his 20 years of dominant play on the court

00:29during which he won five NBA championships.

00:32While numerous pro athletes tweeted at Bryant congratulating him on his Oscar win,

00:36there were other users upset with his win, which comes in the middle of the Me Too movement.

00:40Bryant made headlines in July of that year when he was arrested in Colorado on charges of sexual assault.

00:46Bryant publicly admitted he and the accuser did have relations, but he claimed it was consensual.

00:51The criminal case was dropped after Bryant's accuser refused to testify,

00:55but a civil suit was settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.

00:59Part of the suit involved Bryant's apology, but he never admitted fault.
