After a short stay on the island prison, he is heading to the Wende Correctional Facility in Alden, New York.
Transcript
00:00Harvey Weinstein is leaving Rikers Island for a New York State Prison Facility.
00:05The disgraced Hollywood mogul, who was convicted of sexual assault in the first degree and
00:09rape in the third degree on February 24th and sentenced to 23 years in prison, is leaving
00:14the island prison for Downstate Correctional Facility in Fishkill, New York.
00:18The facility is considered a reception classification center where Weinstein will be evaluated
00:23to determine which long-term correctional facility is best suited for him.
00:27According to the General Guidelines for Prisoners, this means a facility that best meets, quote,
00:30"...his or her security, medical, mental health, and other needs."
00:35Weinstein, like all inmates, will receive a shower, a delousing treatment, a shave, and
00:39a haircut, as well as given orientation videos.
00:42Weinstein's prison consultant Craig Rothfeld spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, explaining
00:46that the fallen producer will spend between two and eight weeks at the Downstate facility
00:50before getting his long-term assignment.
00:52Arthur Idalla, Weinstein's New York-based lawyer, said on the day of his sentencing that the
00:56Fishkill Correctional Center nearby would be an ideal long-term facility for his client
01:01because it has a hospital.
01:03In addition to the Fishkill Correctional Center, another possible long-term home for Weinstein
01:07is the Sing Sing Prison, which the New York Post recently called, quote,
01:10"...the plaza hotel of prisons."
01:13Sing Sing Prison has been featured in multiple motion pictures, including Breakfast at Tiffany's
01:17and Analyze That, and would be a rather ironic move considering Weinstein's Hollywood background.
01:23Journal officials must also determine the location at which Weinstein could best be protected.
01:27Martin Horn, a former commissioner of the New York City Department of Corrections, says,
01:31"...some other prisoner might think, I'm going to make myself famous by assaulting Harvey Weinstein.
01:36He may be a target."
