Shohreh Aghdashloo chats with THR at 'The Penguin' premiere in New York and she shares the story of when she first saw Colin Farrell in full prosthetics. Plus, she reacts to the show being compared to 'The Sopranos.'
Transcript
00:00When you play Nadia Maroney, can you explain her relationship to Penguin?
00:04Well, she was hoping that she's not going to have any relationship with the Penguin.
00:10But when her husband, who is a mob, goes to the prison,
00:14she needs to get in and act on behalf of her husband.
00:17And starts working with this creature, I should say.
00:25And I just loved working with Colin on this.
00:28Well, he fully transforms into this character.
00:32What was your first thought when he first walked out on set in full prosthetics, in full costume?
00:37Because he also stayed in that character throughout set, I heard.
00:41Well, to be honest with you, I didn't meet him on the set.
00:44I went for a fitting.
00:46And then I'm in the middle of the hallway.
00:49I see this man, huge man, limping, coming toward me.
00:53And he says, hi.
00:55And he leaves.
00:56And I told my assistant, I said, who is that?
01:00And she goes, that's Colin.
01:02And I'm like, nah.
01:05Nah.
01:06Unbelievable.
01:08But to tell you the truth, it's not just the makeup and the prosthetic.
01:12He is an underskin actor.
01:15He doesn't act it out.
01:17He lives it.
01:18It's beautiful.
01:20The combination of both is amazing.
01:23It was definitely beautiful to see as well.
01:26And I know there's a lot of supervillain stories out there.
01:29But what makes the Penguin story so special and important to tell?
01:33Believe it or not, after all these decades, we still don't know who the Penguin is.
01:40Never paid any attention, thought of attention.
01:44We have heard many versions, like his parents destroy him in a river.
01:48But his parents left him on the side of the road, but never paid attention.
01:55When they came to me with the idea, I said, I love the idea.
01:59Because I, for one, would love to know who this Penguin is.
02:02And his portrayal in this series is very human-like.
02:09And I love the journey.
02:11How, under what kind of circumstances, a human being turns into a creature.
02:19Well, some people have been likening this story to The Sopranos.
02:23So, what do you kind of make of those comparisons that have been thrown out there recently?
02:27They have all the rights to do that because mob stories are mob stories.
02:31But each and every one of them have their own ingredients.
02:35Like Shakespeare's plays.
02:37Each and every one of them have their own ingredients.
02:42They are, yes, they're mobs.
02:44But just like Penguin, where are they coming from?
02:47Who are they?
02:48What kind of background?
02:50What happened?
02:52And how do you think the events of this story sets things up for the Batman sequel?
02:57It would just be perfect.
03:02It would be a great kind of platform for now Batman to come up.
03:09And now we have enough information about both.
03:15And then we can watch it.
03:17And then we can see there's a lot of things that have actually tried to do, but Grandpa's little thing a bit.
03:18It would just be true.
03:35No, no, no.
03:36That's a bit too, yeah.
03:36Go to Facebook.
03:38Over here.
03:39If you're like I don't know what I have.
03:42I hope you've helped it.
03:44I don't know what happens.
