Madonna is set to direct the musical biopic based on her own life and career.

00:00Julia Garner has emerged as the frontrunner to play Madonna in the forthcoming biopic about the pop icon.

00:11While Garner is being eyed for the role, it's early in the process,

00:14so much so that it's currently unclear at what stage the deal-making is in.

00:18If a deal does make, Garner will have earned the opportunity to play the material girl

00:22after a many-months-long audition process,

00:25which included choreography, singing, and reading sessions with Madonna herself.

00:29Madonna is also directing the film.

00:37Other actresses that auditioned for the role of the Like a Prayer singer include Florence Pugh,

00:41Odessa Young, and Alexa DeMee, among a multitude of others.

00:48As for Garner, she recently starred in Netflix's Inventing Anna.

00:52The actresses won two Emmys for playing Ruth Langmore in the drama series Ozark.
