00:00What I'm announcing today is that unions and employers have been coming together this week
00:05to tackle an issue which has been really quite difficult through the process of the workers' rights bill.
00:10We have announced as part of our manifesto that we would have day one rights
00:13and many of those rights remain in place.
00:16So sick pay and paternity leave, for example, will remain after the bill goes through Parliament as day one rights.
00:22But employers said that they had difficulty with having day one rights
00:26for access to tribunals for unfair dismissal.
00:30And this has been something which has been part of a very heated debate
00:33and a very passionate debate by the employers.
00:36What's happened this week is that employers and unions have come together
00:39and it's been a difficult process.
00:42But here in this office for the Department for Business and Trade,
00:46they have diligently and they have persistently come together to go through all of the issues
00:50and come to a compromise.
00:51And it is a total credit to both sides of this discussion and this debate
00:57that they have come to a compromise where, after six months,
01:02tribunal rights will kick in for unfair dismissal.
01:06So that is coming down from two years to six months,
01:10which is a big concession for employers in this country.
01:12And it is moving from day one to six months, which is a big concession for the unions.
01:18This is a really important sign of how this government seeks to move forward,
01:23bringing people together, bringing unions and bringing employees together
01:28with employers so that we can have a way forward.
01:31Let's go.
