00:00As general elections are underway in St. Vincent and the Granadians, we go live to Kingston's with our special envoy Belen de los Santos, who will tell us more of this significant date. Hello, Belen, tell us about it.
00:22Hello, Ana. Exactly as you were saying, we are starting this general elections here in St. Vincent and the Granadians. Polls have been open since 7 a.m. It's 8.40 a.m. local time right now.
00:39And as you can see right behind me, the people are already in line. They are exercising their right to vote. Let's recall we are at the St. George East constituency at this moment.
00:52We are talking about general elections in St. Vincent that are underway to elect 15 of the representatives of the Assembly, the one camera of the Parliament.
01:06Those 15 representatives, one pair each of those constituencies that make up St. Vincent and the Granadians, those will elect the Prime Minister.
01:17So whoever wins the most constituencies out of the 15, those will be the one to elect, of course, the Prime Minister.
01:26Both parties that are participating in this election are the Inconvent, the ruling government of the ULP, the Unity Labour Party of Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves at this moment that is looking to revalidate and also for the opposition, the New Democratic Party, the NDP.
01:48And as we were saying, this is constituency by constituency, vote by vote.
01:55In this case, we are in St. George East.
01:58One of the things to keep in mind is that in this case, in St. George East, the candidate for the representative at the Assembly is Camilo Gonsalves,
02:09the current Minister of Finance and Economic Planning here in St. Vincent and the Granadians and also the son of Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves,
02:16one of the most prominent figures of the ULP and people are coming here.
02:23We've been looking at the numbers.
02:25Let's recall that St. Vincent and the Granadians has a 110,000 population nation one over 100, close to 101,000 are registered to vote.
02:37And one curious thing is that for a country where the vote is non-mandatory, it tends to have very high participation numbers.
02:45People are expecting around a 70 percent in this case.
02:50And because people know that every vote count, we are looking at constituencies that have been defined by 100 votes,
02:57by less than 100 votes, by one vote was one of the options of last election.
03:04So we'll be following close this process.
03:07It will continue.
03:09Polls will be open until 5 p.m.
03:12But of course, if the lines continue, they will continue to be open and we'll be covering the whole day.
03:17So, Ana, you stay tuned because we'll have more information.
