A major insurance fraud attempt was uncovered at Brajghat in Garhmukteshwar, Hapur, after municipal staff found two men performing last rites of a dummy instead of a real body. The suspects, Delhi-based cloth traders Kamal Somani and Ashish Khurana, had brought a mannequin wrapped in a sheet and claimed it was their servant’s body.

Officials grew suspicious and checked the bundle, revealing the dummy. An i20 car used by the accused was seized, and two more dummies were recovered, making a total of three. Two accomplices managed to escape.

Police said the traders had allegedly taken a ₹50-lakh insurance policy in their servant’s name and planned to cremate the dummy, obtain a receipt, forge a death certificate, and claim the insurance amount. The accused have been arrested, and further investigation is underway.
