00:30EU migration policies are failing to protect migrant minors and are worsening the harm they face along routes from Sudan to Europe, according to the NGO Save the Children.
00:40At least 36 people have been killed and 279 are still missing after a massive fire engulfed a high-rise residential building in Hong Kong.
00:51The blaze rapidly spread through bamboo scaffolding, leading to the evacuation of 700 residents in the northern district of Taipo.
01:01Police received multiple reports of people trapped inside the buildings.
01:06A member of the local district council told media that most of those trapped were believed to be elderly residents.
01:13As firefighters battled the inferno from ladder trucks, a 37-year-old crew member was killed.
01:22The housing complex consists of eight blocks containing almost 2,000 apartments, housing about 4,800 people, according to records.
01:32District officials have opened temporary shelters for displaced residents.
01:37A Turkish-German family of four who died while on holiday in Istanbul were likely killed from phosphine gas from a pesticide.
01:50According to a preliminary autopsy report, it had been used to treat a bug infestation in their hotel and was found in various parts of the hotel room.
02:00The Bojek family went to hospital on the 12th of November with vomiting and nausea and were discharged after receiving treatment.
02:09But the next day, they fell ill again and their condition was treated as an emergency.
02:14The children, aged 6 and 3, died that day, while the mother died on November 14th and their father died on the 17th.
02:23Two other tourists also staying at the hotel were hospitalized and the hotel has been closed.
02:30Europe must keep the pressure on Russia.
02:36The tone used on Wednesday by the President of the European Commission was determined.
02:41Speaking before the European Parliament, Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that Moscow's objective has not changed since the start of the invasion of Ukraine.
02:50Russia has always believed that they can outlast Ukraine, Europe and all of its allies.
03:01And it is why every time there is serious progress towards negotiations that can bring about a real peace, the violence escalates.
03:13We have seen this before.
03:16This is a pattern.
03:18And the noises from the Kremlin in the last few days say a lot about its real intentions.
03:23Europe has been working for several days to rebalance the 28-point peace plan initially proposed by the United States without consulting its allies.
03:33But the European effort has confirmed one essential idea.
03:36One principle has been accepted.
03:40Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.
03:43Nothing about Europe without Europe.
03:46Nothing about NATO without NATO.
03:48To provide financial support to Ukraine, Ursula von der Leyen reminded the House that he had proposed three options
03:55and made no secret of her preference for the reparation loan, which involves using frozen Russian assets valued at 210 billion euros in the EU.
04:04U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker has suggested that Germany should eventually take over the alliance's top military role,
04:15signaling a potential shift in American leadership.
04:19Whitaker said he looks forward to the day Germany says it's ready to take over the supreme allied commander position, known as SAKUR.
04:26He acknowledged this is a long-term aspirational goal, but emphasized that Washington wants European military capabilities to equal those of the U.S.
04:37Traditionally, the SAKUR role has always been held by a U.S. general commanding both NATO forces and American troops in Europe.
04:44However, a German expert told Euronews that a European commander would no longer have authority over U.S. troops,
04:51complicating the dual-headed nature of the role.
04:54Whitaker's comment comes amid fears of a U.S. retreat from European security,
04:59highlighted by a proposed peace plan for Ukraine that is seen as yet another sign of Washington stepping back from its leadership role in NATO.
05:12EU migration policies are failing to protect children and are worsening the harm they face along routes from Sudan to Europe,
05:20according to a report published on Wednesday by the NGO Save the Children.
05:24The report forecast on routes between Sudan and Egypt, Libya and Greece, as well as on the Balkans routes.
05:30The organization reported that all minors interviewed in Libya experienced severe violence, sexual exploitation, extortion and long-term detention.
05:38In Greece, children reported that they were forced to sailboats in Libya to then being prosecuted as traffickers by Greek authorities.
05:45Similar situations were found in the Western Balkans, where one in five refugees and migrants hurt by the organization
05:52experienced violent illegal pushbacks by border police.
05:56The NGO said the EU's increase in border management and anti-smuggling support for third countries,
06:02while shutting humanitarian budgets increases these risks for children.
06:08France's top court has rejected former French President Nicolas Sarkozy's last appeal in the Bigmalian case,
06:24making a final ruling on his sentence for the illegal financing of his failed 2012 presidential campaign.
06:33But even though a six-month prison sentence has been confirmed,
06:36the former president is unlikely to go back to jail.
06:41Instead, it's more likely that he will serve this sentence under some sort of partial house arrest or with an electronic bracelet.
06:49And that will be up to the judge to decide in the coming weeks.
06:54But this ruling adds to Sarkozy's long list of legal battles.
06:58In September, he was found guilty of criminal conspiracy for allowing his campaign managers
07:03to seek illegal funding from the late Libyan dictator Gaddafi for his 2007 presidential campaign.
07:12This marked the first time in French modern history that a former head of state actually went to prison.
07:19But after three weeks, he was released and is now preparing to appeal this case next year.
07:28But this is not the first time that the top court has rejected Sarkozy's last appeal.
07:33In a separate case in December last year, the court made his conviction final for trying to bribe a judge in exchange for information.
07:41Subsequently, Sarkozy had to wear an electronic bracelet from February to May of this year.
07:49And for now, his legal battles show no signs of slowing down, keeping the former president firmly in the spotlight.
08:00Brazil's former president, Jair Bolsonaro, has begun a 27-year prison sentence for leading a coup attempt
08:06in a development that has stunned much of the country.
08:09A Supreme Court justice ruled on Tuesday that Bolsonaro's legal team has exhausted all appeals,
08:14ordering him to remain in custody after a preemptive arrest on Saturday.
08:19Bolsonaro's supporters and opponents gathered outside the federal police headquarters after the order was issued,
08:24with many calling for his release, while others celebrated his imprisonment.
08:29The former president had been under house arrest since August and was taken into custody last weekend
08:33after trying to tamper with his ankle monitor.
08:35He blamed the incident on hallucinations, a claim the judge dismissed.
08:41Bolsonaro is being held in a 12-square-meter room at federal police headquarters in Brasilia,
08:46with a bed, private bathroom, air conditioning, a TV and a desk, and no contact with other inmates.
08:52Bolsonaro and several allies were convicted for attempting to overthrow Brazil's democracy after 2022 election defeat.
08:59In a plot that included plans to kill then-president-elect Luis Inacio Lula de Silva,
09:05Vice President Geraldo Alcmin, and the presiding justice figures.
09:09Several senior allies, including army generals and former ministers,
09:13have also started serving sentences in military and civilian facilities,
09:17while a former intelligence chief remains at large in the United States.
09:20At least 10 people were killed and 6 others are missing after torrential rains unleashed flash floods
09:31and triggered landslides in the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
09:36Police say rescue teams are struggling to reach the affected areas in 6 regencies north of the island
09:42after monsoon rains caused rivers to burst their banks.
09:45Authorities say they've recovered the bodies of at least 5 deceased victims
09:50and 3 others who were wounded in the worst-hit city of Sibolga.
09:56The disasters have collapsed thousands of homes and submerged entire areas.
10:15of the system with a more healthy life system of their families,
10:18who put it in one small town, which is the most vulnerable.
10:20The standards are now elevated to the whole population of the world.
10:22The Pensacola is not a great place,
10:23such as the weather has been torn.
10:24But with a new level of inflation,
10:25a readily known storm of the island of the island of the island of the island of the island have been blown up.
10:27The AMOXX has been in a situation with a huge amount of my life in the ice to the bottom of the island of the island,
10:29the more the wall of the island of the island,
10:31the more but there will be a difficult time for the island of the island.
10:34The air is still on the back of the island of the island of the island of the island.
