00:00Europe must keep up the pressure on Russia, says the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
00:10EU migration policies are failing to protect migrant miners and are worsening the harm they face along routes from Sudan to Europe, according to the NGO Save the Children.
00:21Europe must keep the pressure on Russia. The tone used on Wednesday by the President of the European Commission was determined.
00:30Speaking before the European Parliament, Ursula von der Leyen emphasised that Moscow's objective has not changed since the start of the invasion of Ukraine.
00:39Russia's playbook has not changed. From the start, Russia has always believed that they can outlast Ukraine, Europe and all of its allies.
00:50And it is why every time there is serious progress towards negotiations that can bring about a real peace, the violence escalates.
01:02We have seen this before. This is a pattern. And the noises from the Kremlin in the last few days say a lot about its real intentions.
01:11Europe has been working for several days to rebalance the 28-point peace plan initially proposed by the United States without consulting its allies.
01:21But the European effort has confirmed one essential idea.
01:25One principle has been accepted. Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine. Nothing about Europe without Europe. Nothing about NATO without NATO.
01:37To provide financial support to Ukraine, Ursula von der Leyen reminded the House that she had proposed three options
01:43and made no secret of her preference for the reparation loan, which involves using frozen Russian assets valued at 210 billion euros in the EU.
01:53U.S. President Donald Trump says his plan to end the war in Ukraine has been fine-tuned to address concerns of both sides
02:05after U.S. mediators held talks with Russia and Ukraine.
02:09Trump says he believes a deal can be reached soon, noting that he'll be deploying his special envoy Steve Witkoff
02:15to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week.
02:18Trump, aboard Air Force One, also announced that he'll be dispatching U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll
02:26to hold further discussions with Ukrainian officials.
02:29We're having good talks. We started with Russia. We're having some talks with Russia.
02:36Ukraine is doing well. I think they're pretty happy about it. They'd like to see it end.
02:41And we won't know for a little while, but we're making progress.
02:44They're going to keep talking. They're talking to Russia now.
02:48Steve Witkoff is going over. Maybe with Jared, they're going to be meeting with President Putin, I believe, next week in Moscow.
02:56In its original form, Trump's plan heavily favored Russia, requiring Ukraine to cede a large amount of territory,
03:04which included the entirety of the eastern Donbass region, most of which is currently controlled by Russia.
03:10The terms of the proposal raised concern among many European leaders who reject the premise of Ukraine ceding land.
03:19On Tuesday, leaders of the Coalition of the Willing, including French President Emmanuel Macron,
03:25and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer held talks to discuss the new peace push.
03:30They emphasized their support for Trump's efforts, stressing that talks are going in a positive direction.
03:36Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated on Monday that large parts of Trump's plan is acceptable to Ukraine.
03:45He noted, however, that he'd like to meet with Trump as soon as convenient to iron out final details for a framework for peace.
03:53Thank you, thank you. That's really important.
03:57U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker has suggested that Germany should eventually take over the alliance's top military role,
04:04signaling a potential shift in American leadership.
04:07Whitaker said he looks forward to the day Germany says it's ready to take over the Supreme Allied Commander position, known as SAKUR.
04:15He acknowledged this is a long-term aspirational goal, but emphasized that Washington wants European military capabilities to equal those of the U.S.
04:25Traditionally, the SAKUR role has always been held by a U.S. general commanding both NATO forces and American troops in Europe.
04:33However, a German expert told Euronews that a European commander would no longer have authority over U.S. troops,
04:40complicating the dual-headed nature of the role.
04:43Whitaker's comment comes amid fears of a U.S. retreat from European security,
04:48highlighted by a proposed peace plan for Ukraine that is seen as yet another sign of Washington stepping back from its leadership role in NATO.
05:01EU migration policies are failing to protect children and are worsening the harm they face along routes from Sudan to Europe,
05:08according to a report published on Wednesday by the NGO Save the Children.
05:13The report forecast on routes between Sudan and Egypt, Libya and Greece, as well as on the Balkans routes.
05:19The organization reported that all minors interviewed in Libya experienced severe violence, sexual exploitation, extortion and long-term detention.
05:27In Greece, children reported that they were forced to sail boats in Libya to then being prosecuted as traffickers by Greek authorities.
05:34Similar situations were found in the Western Balkans, where one in five refugees and migrants hurt by the organization experienced violent illegal pushbacks by border police.
05:45The NGO said the EU's increase in border management and anti-smuggling support for third countries,
05:51whilst cutting humanitarian budgets increases these risks for children.
05:54Dozens of protesters filled Central Paris on Tuesday to condemn a surge in gender-based violence and pay tribute to victims.
06:07The demonstration came just hours before the government received a major new report calling for radical reform of how the justice system handles domestic abuse cases.
06:17The report recommends testing a new type of magistrate dedicated solely to intrafamilial violence cases.
06:23We continue to have women who are guilty, women who are asking for help,
06:34and who, despite that, are not protected, are not taken care of by means and by political will to eradicate these violences.
06:41In 2024, 107 women were killed by their partner or ex-partner nationwide, representing an 11% increase from the previous year.
06:52Recent government data shows that every day in France, more than three women are victims of femicide or attempted femicide.
06:58Women aged 70 and above represented 26% of victims and 9% increase in one week.
07:05Despite political commitments, many protesters say the situation for women in France is deteriorating.
07:11At least 13 people have been killed and 15 injured after a massive fire engulfed a high-rise residential building in Hong Kong.
07:26The blaze rapidly spread through bamboo scaffolding, leading to the evacuation of 700 residents in the northern district of Taipo.
07:36Police received multiple reports of people trapped inside the buildings.
07:42A member of the local district council told media that most of those trapped were believed to be elderly residents.
07:50As firefighters battled the inferno from ladder trucks, a 37-year-old crew member was killed.
07:57The housing complex consists of eight blocks containing almost 2,000 apartments, housing about 4,800 people, according to records.
08:08District officials have opened temporary shelters for displaced residents.
08:13At least 10 people were killed and six others are missing after torrential rains unleashed flash floods and triggered landslides in the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
08:29Police say rescue teams are struggling to reach the affected areas in six regencies north of the island after monsoon rains caused rivers to burst their banks.
08:38Authorities say they've recovered the bodies of at least five deceased victims and three others who were wounded in the worst-hit city of Sibolga.
08:48The disasters have collapsed thousands of homes and submerged entire areas.
08:56Ahead of the under-17 World Cup final between Austria and Portugal, I spoke with FIFA's chief of global football development, Arsene Wenger, about the tournament and what stood out to him.
09:08Thank you for speaking with us.
09:15Thank you, it's a pleasure.
09:17Well, with Portugal and Austria reaching the final of this year's under-17 World Cup, what are your overall impressions of the tournament and its impact on the future of football?
09:26Well, I would say overall this tournament was really successful.
09:31It was a joy to watch and personally I felt in paradise was to have the whole world together in such a short compartment and being capable to watch football all over the world was fantastic.
09:46Were you surprised by Austria reaching the final?
09:49I would say, first of all, the quality of their players and secondly, they looked a real team who knows what to do to deal with every situation in a very intelligent way.
10:05I did see them patient, intelligent, not making stupid fouls, using the moments of weakness of their opponent in a very efficient way.
10:17And they looked a real team, capable to deal with all kinds of difficulties that you can face during the game.
10:25What stands out to you about Johannes Moser's performance, the top goal scorer of the tournament?
10:29What potential do you see in him?
10:31I think he's a killer, you know.
10:34He's a guy who puts his energy, first of all, to help the team.
10:40He works on the flanks and so that demands physically a very top potential.
10:47And on top of that, he's somebody who's not scared to want the ball.
10:51And when he has an opportunity, he goes to the end of it.
10:55He plays with belief, with belief and with a desire to be efficient.
11:00And so he looks to me a very generous type.
11:05And that's why I believe he has a bright future.
11:09He's a top gold star of the tournament.
11:12I think we say gold, so that is a remarkable achievement.
11:17So with the pitches close to each other at Aspire Zone, what do you think of the vibes over there?
11:21I love it.
11:21I love it because for me it looked like a football festival, you know, where everybody's here, happy to be here.
11:29Every country thanked us for being here and for having the chance to watch their team as well, to watch other teams.
11:38It was as well a moment of exchange of world football.
11:42Thank you very much.
