00:01U.S. President Donald Trump is insisting that Iran is begging to make a deal to end the war.
00:08The president, speaking at the start of a cabinet meeting on Thursday,
00:11said he wanted to set the record straight that he isn't the one pushing for a deal.
00:1626 days in, we're extremely, really a lot ahead of schedule.
00:23The Iranian regime is now admitting to itself that they have been decisively defeated.
00:29They're saying to people, this is a disaster.
00:33They know. That's why they're talking to us.
00:35They wouldn't talk otherwise.
00:37And they'll tell you, we're not negotiating.
00:39We will not negotiate.
00:41Of course they're negotiating.
00:42They've been obliterated.
00:43Who wouldn't negotiate?
00:45They are begging to make a deal.
00:48U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said there were strong signs Iran could be convinced to make a peace deal,
00:54even though Iranian officials have denied they are negotiating with the U.S. as the war continues in its fourth
01:00week.
01:01Trump also again criticized his NATO allies for not sending naval assets to secure the Strait of Hormuz.
01:09Nobody's a match for the United States, but they're not a match for the United States.
01:13It's small potatoes.
01:14That's why I'm so disappointed in NATO, because this was a test for NATO.
01:19This was a test.
01:20You can help us.
01:21You don't have to.
01:23If you don't have, you know, if you don't do that, we're going to remember.
01:26Just remember.
01:27Remember this in a number of months from now.
01:30Remember my statements.
01:31The U.S. has offered shifting objectives, including destroying Iran's missile and nuclear programs,
01:37ending Tehran's support for armed groups in the region, and pushing for the overthrow of Iran's theocracy.
01:43While the U.S.-Israeli campaign has hit Iran's military and government hard,
01:48killing top leaders and striking scores of targets,
01:51Iran continues to fire missiles, and there is no sign of an uprising against the government.
02:01The wars in Iran and Ukraine are very much interlinked by Russia,
02:05High Representative Kayakalas warned on Thursday as she headed into a G7 meeting of foreign affairs ministers
02:12in Abbey des Vaux de Cernay in France.
02:15She is calling on the United States to ramp up economic pressure on the Kremlin
02:19as it benefits from rising oil prices due to the conflict.
02:23We see that Russia is helping Iran with intelligence to target Americans, to kill Americans,
02:32and Russia is also supporting Iran now with the drones,
02:36so that they can attack neighboring countries and also U.S. military bases.
02:41So these wars are very much interlinked.
02:44So if America wants the war in the Middle East to stop Iran, to stop attacking them,
02:51they should also put the pressure on Russia so that they are not able to help them in this.
02:58Kayakalas stressed that Europe would join a coalition to secure the Strait of Hormuz,
03:04carrying one-fifth of the global oil production, only after the cessation of hostilities.
03:13Russia continues to wage its war in Ukraine,
03:16launching 153 drones in overnight attacks on the country
03:20as six regions face power cuts following strikes.
03:24Five people were injured on Thursday morning after a Russian attack on an apartment block in Dnipro,
03:30according to regional officials.
03:32Power outages are affecting six regions, including Odessa, Sumi, Chernihiv and Khakiv,
03:38following strikes on energy infrastructure.
03:41Ukraine's Minister of Energy reported.
03:44Ukraine's armed forces said that while 130 of the drones were intercepted,
03:4916 hit their targets and downed debris fell in five locations.
03:54Meanwhile, at least 20 people were injured on Wednesday,
03:58including seven in the Khakiv region.
04:00Ole, a Khakiv region resident, described the attack.
04:27The easing of U.S. sanctions on Russian oil earlier this month
04:31is further enabling Russia to finance its military campaign in Ukraine.
04:41European Council President António Kosta should exclude Hungary from sensitive discussions
04:46if Budapest fails to clarify alleged Russia leaks,
04:51former European Commission President José Manuel Barroso told Euronews.
04:55Hungary is sitting at the center of explosive allegations suggesting Hungarian foreign minister
05:02debriefed his Russian counterpart before and after private EU meetings.
05:06First of all, they should clarify if the clarification is not sufficient.
05:11I think in some matters, the present European Council can perfectly say,
05:17now we are going to meet without Hungary.
05:19From a legal point of view, the European Union can launch infringements
05:23if there is a violation of Article 4 of the Lisbon Treaty.
05:27But beyond the legal measures, I think it's even more effectively, politically,
05:31we can always show to a country that behaves like that,
05:35not respecting the basic principles of decency,
05:38that the countries can move on politically as well.
05:41The former Commission Chief said the clarifications so far provided by the Hungarian government
05:47are not really clarifications.
05:50The EU's Foreign Chief Kayakalas has demanded a full explanation
05:54and the European Commission has called for a clarification.
05:58Budapest denies it held conversations during meetings with Russia.
06:08Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un
06:13held talks in North Korea's capital on Thursday
06:15and signed a friendship and cooperation treaty.
06:19Lukashenko, who was in Pyongyang for the first time on a two-day official visit,
06:24hailed the document as fundamental
06:25and said that relations between the two countries are entering a new stage,
06:29according to his press service.
06:32It also quoted Kim expressing solidarity and full support for Belarus
06:37and speaking out against, quote,
06:39unlawful pressure on Belarus from the West.
06:42Belarus and North Korea are part of a push driven by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Putin
06:48to create what they call a multipolar world to challenge Western hegemony.
06:53They have both provided Moscow assistance in its Ukraine war,
06:57with Minsk serving as a launchpad for the invasion
07:00and Moscow stationing tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.
07:06A 42-year-old former French police officer suspected of murdering two women
07:12was arrested in Portugal.
07:14The victims were revealed by authorities as the suspect's current and ex-partners
07:19whose bodies were found in Serra de Noguera in the northeast of the country.
07:24The former cop, Cédric Prisant,
07:26had been wanted by French authorities for several days prior to his arrest in the Iberian nation.
07:32Officials say he was detained by Portuguese National Republican Guard forces during an inspection on a major highway,
07:39for forged documents and the illegal possession of a firearm.
07:43Prisant was also traveling with his two children,
07:46aged just 13 and 18 months,
07:49who were found safe and taken to foster care institutions.
07:53Following his detention,
07:55Portuguese officials were alerted of pending French warrants for his arrest
07:59over charges of kidnapping his current and former partners and the two children.
08:03Media outlets say it was Prisant's eldest son who had provided information
08:08on the burial site of the two women to Portuguese law enforcement.
08:12A delegation of the French gendarme is reportedly being deployed to Portugal
08:16to take custody of the suspect.
08:23As the prospect for de-escalation in the Iran war remains uncertain,
08:28oil prices are rising,
08:29with international benchmark for Brent trading above $106 a barrel on Thursday morning.
08:36Leading European indices opened with losses of between 0.4% and 0.8%,
08:42following a sell-off in Asian markets,
08:45amid conflicting statements from Iran and Washington
08:47over the progress of diplomatic efforts to end the war.
08:51U.S. President Donald Trump said a deal to end the Iran war is near,
08:55even after Tehran dismissed his 15-point ceasefire plan
08:59and with thousands of troops on the way to the Middle East,
09:02potentially for deployment in Iran.
09:04Iran, which has effectively closed the crucial Strait of Hormuz,
09:08sought to formalize its control over the waterway
09:11and impose fees on ships wishing to transit it.
09:14The Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf,
09:17is considered an international waterway open to all shipping.
09:21Imposing fees would end that
09:23and would likely be strongly opposed by the Gulf Arab states,
09:26the United States and others.
