What The Secret Service Used To Call Sasha Obama
Transcript
00:00Kids around the country can only imagine what it's like being the president's child while
00:04living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
00:06For a kid, the West Wing is a dream.
00:08Yet for former President Barack Obama's daughters, Malia and Sasha, it was just home.
00:12In an interview with People back in 2008, the Obamas revealed that the girls — 10
00:16and 7 at the time — just got one dollar per week in allowance, and only after finishing
00:20their chores.
00:21Former First Lady Michelle Obama revealed,
00:23"...they have to clean up their half of the third floor where they play.
00:26They have a closet of toys they have to clean up.
00:28They have to practice their piano every day."
00:30When it came to growing up in the White House, Malia and Sasha Obama managed relatively normal
00:34lives away from the public eye, yet life came with an added twist.
00:37The biggest change from being normal kids in Chicago to being the president's daughters
00:41in Washington, D.C. was the presence of armed guards 24-7.
00:44When it came time for the Obamas' eldest daughter, Malia, to learn to drive, Michelle Obama admitted
00:49in an interview with Rachael Ray that it wasn't she or the president who taught their teen
00:52at the time.
00:53It was the Secret Service.
00:54She said,
00:55"...the Secret Service taught her, actually, because they wouldn't let me in the car with
00:58her.
00:59She always has security around."
01:00The former First Lady went on to reveal that Malia did eventually get some alone time in
01:04the car, but the Secret Service wasn't far behind.
01:07Driving for Malia, I think, gives her a sense of normalcy, like the rest of her friends are
01:10doing, and my kids have got to learn how to live in the world like normal kids.
01:14The relationship between Sasha and Malia Obama got a bit trickier as the girls entered
01:18their teen years.
01:19In an appearance on The Late Late Show, former President Barack Obama admitted he didn't see a future
01:23in politics or public service for his two daughters, as they were both tired of the Secret Service.
01:28Obama joked to James Corden,
01:29"...they still have PTSD from guys talking into their wrist microphones and glasses as
01:35they're trying to go to a music concert."
01:37The former president then went on to say,
01:39"...them as teenagers having Secret Service guys follow them when they were going out
01:42on dates I think probably has shut down their interest in public service."
01:46Malia has already steered away from politics, sparking interest in the film industry and
01:50attending Harvard University.
01:51Obama predicted of his daughters,
01:52"...I think they are probably going to find other ways to serve rather than run for office
01:59themselves, but you never know."
02:01Having the Secret Service hovering over the Obama girls as they grew up in the White House
02:04wasn't all bad.
02:05The armed guards had a sweet nickname for each member of the family, with Sasha's perhaps
02:09being the sweetest.
02:10The Secret Service opted to call Sasha Rosebud, while her sister Malia was given the codename
02:14Radiance.
02:15In keeping with the R theme, Michelle was known as Renaissance, while the president was Renegade.
02:19The tradition of a Secret Service codename for the first family in the White House began
02:22in the early 1900s.
02:24And while the nickname process originally began as a safety measure, it has since become an opportunity
02:28for the first family to choose a name with meaning.
02:31Looking back at past presidential families, each nickname within one first family must begin
02:35with the same first letter, such as R in the Obama's case, and they are picked out from
02:38an approved list from the White House Communications Agency.
02:41Former President Donald Trump opted to pay homage to his years as a New York real estate
02:44tycoon, choosing the codename Mogul, while former First Lady Melania Trump went with Muse,
02:49a fitting name for a former model.
02:51The Bush family, on the other hand, went with the letter T, with President George W. Bush going
02:55with Trailblazer, former First Lady Laura Bush choosing Tempo, and their daughters going
02:59with Turquoise and Twinkle.
