00:00Who needs Fashion Week when we have music videos? Fashion and music have always gone hand-in-hand.
00:05Singers and musicians like Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Lizzo, Harry Styles, and Miley Cyrus
00:11are all one part musical entertainer, one part fashion model. These stars push the boundaries
00:16of fashion on red carpets as well as in their own videos, often creating visual stories with music,
00:22art, and fashion. Music videos are useful for designers and brands because they're accessible
00:27to anyone. Not everyone can sit front row next to Ms. Wintour, but we can all watch Beyoncé rock
00:33Giavinci in her music videos. With many runway shows and fashion events on hold in 2020,
00:38designers and brands had to find new and exciting ways to show their art to the world.
00:42What better way to showcase the newest fashions than in music videos created by A-list musicians
00:48and singers? More and more, we can see high fashion and luxury designs appearing in music videos.
00:54In fact, videos have practically become a substitute for fashion shows altogether.
00:58Music videos are a method for musicians to bring their songs to life, but they can also function
01:03as a platform for trendsetting, collaborative marketing, and showing off the newest high
01:08fashion collections. Even as runway shows were few and far between, new and daring trends still
01:14trickled into our everyday lives. Wondering how animal print suddenly became a thing?
01:19Just thank Beyoncé and Cardi B. How about the increase in sales for bucket hats? Yep,
01:24that's all thanks to BTS's Dynamite video. Although music videos have a long history of being the
01:30biggest platform for new trends, recently, high fashion has used the medium for more than just
01:35making the singers look good. It's now become a main source of marketing and advertising.
01:40Singers are seeing the benefit of collaborating with big brands, especially after losing the revenue of
01:45live concerts and stadium shows. We all miss live music, but a well-directed and filmed music video
01:51is, well, the next best thing. Music videos are a great way for singers to bring their fans and viewers
01:57into the inspiration and vibe behind their music. They can work with the visuals of a video to create
02:03another layer to their art, playing with fashion to paint a full picture of the song's meaning.
02:08Stars like Selena Gomez and Beyoncé use fashion and art in their videos to represent their cultural
02:14heritage and background. Ever since music videos first gained popularity in the 80s through MTV,
02:20everlasting pop star Madonna has been changing the landscape of fashion trends through her fun videos.
02:26Some of her first videos helped to catapult the grunge-chic look into everyday style. Her style
02:32perfectly articulated the fun, girly looks of the era. Songs like A Prayer and Material Girl showcased
02:38the decade's coolest looks and helped launch the young singer into fashion's elite. She channeled the
02:43iconic Marilyn Monroe with bright red lips and platinum blonde hair. Her cone-shaped top by designer
02:49Jean-Paul Gauthier became synonymous with the 80s. The lingerie style dresses worn by the singer in her
02:55videos became iconic in their own right and started an entire trend reaching well into the 90s and even
03:02influencing recent looks. For the 28-year-old singer's recent Spanish language song and music video,
03:08De Una Vez, there's a lot being said besides the beautiful lyrics about healing from heartbreak.
03:14Selena uses the dreamy visuals of the scenes to draw us into an exaggerated aesthetic of her Latin culture.
03:20In the video, Selena wears a gorgeous floral dress with puffed sleeves by high fashion design house Rodarte.
03:27The silk dress, which retails at a luxury price of $2,645 USD, is covered in a delicate daisy pattern and
03:36appropriately tells the story of Selena's musical message. The dress's design is an homage to the
03:42famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. One of the video's directors, Tanya Verduzco, told Vogue,
03:48We wanted to have these connections, to create this look, and to play with the amazing flowers the way Frida did.
03:53But making it modern and cool for right now, the flowers on the dress, hair, and within the video
03:59all connect with this idea of renewal. For the experienced pop star, the song, the design of the video,
04:05and the floral dress represent a new exploration of Latin music and cultural heritage. Also, how gorgeous does
04:12the rare beauty creator look? The glowing Milagro heart worn by Gomez is a Mexican cultural symbol
04:18representing healing. The singer also added that the presence of floral designs in the video plays
04:24into the theme of renewal and growth. Everyone knows that Beyonce is fashion. Her style and wardrobe
04:31can rival any top model or designer, and fashion brands know that the fastest way to the top is to be
04:37worn by Queen Bey herself. Her recent album, Black is King, showcased some of the world's top designers
04:43and stunning collections. The visual album featured several videos, each decked out with incredible
04:49fashion. The video for Already shows Beyonce wearing an amazing Burberry cow print corset,
04:55custom designed by Ricardo Tisi. Another look, the crescent print bodysuit, is by Marnie Serre.
05:01The album was an extension of her work on Disney's The Lion King and followed the theme of an
05:06empowered African aesthetic. The star's stylist, Zarina Akers, helped to create the visual masterpiece
05:13by working with top designers and incorporating colorful and queen-worthy pieces. The album features
05:19an endless array of designers, using the videos to showcase their works. Beyonce, along with other
05:25fashion leaders and models like Lupita Nyong'o, Naomi Campbell, and Owingade Chul, all rock the high
05:31fashion looks. In Mood for Life, a leopard print dream by Valentino takes up the screen. For Water,
05:37the pink tulle of Molly Goddard's design almost steals the show. Even Blue Ivy makes an appearance
05:43in an Erdem Moraglio blue floral design. The singer and mother told Vogue that she hopes her album helps
05:49inspire people through the beauty and fashion of her culture. I only hope that from watching,
05:54you leave feeling inspired to continue building a legacy that impacts the world in an immeasurable way.
06:00Beyonce's previous visual album, Lemonade, made just as big a stir. Or even more, the innovative
06:06medium launched the entire album's worth of videos at the same time as the tracks, a new way of
06:12releasing music that fans fell head over heels for. The video for Formation features looks by Gucci,
06:18Givenchy, Fendi, Rosie Asoulin, and Alessandra Rich. How can you not love everything this star does?
06:26Fairly new to the scene, Lizzo is not one to let fashion trends pass her by. An advocate for self
06:32love and body positivity, the star often chooses to rock bold and fun pieces while on stage and in
06:38her music videos. Lizzo started off 2020 by attending the Grammys in a gown fit for any A-list pop star,
06:45a full-length Versace number adorned in thousands of Swarovski crystals. Throughout the year, however,
06:51the star found her own voice through her fashion and began to push the boundaries. Her video for the
06:56hit Truth Hurts was a defining moment for the star. She tells the world that she is enough by going as
07:02far as using wedding fashion and marrying herself. Lizzo and her music video fashion sense definitely
07:09put the sing in single. For the Billboard Music Awards, Lizzo wore a custom gown by Christian Soriano,
07:15which promoted her views on voting. The tight black gown featured the words VOTE in bold,
07:20bright white letters. And let's not forget the incredible fashion and designs that made themselves
07:25known through the star's Instagram page throughout the year. We're talking American flag jumpsuits and
07:31height-defying hairstyles. If his Vogue cover didn't convince the world of his ability to completely slay the
07:37latest fashion trends, the video for Watermelon Sugar should be proof enough. The catchy and snappy
07:43hit was more than just a feel-good song of the summer. Who needs fashion show runways when we
07:48can just check out what Harry Styles wore recently? The video showed off the star's impeccable sense
07:53of style with an orange crochet top and a few different designs by his go-to designer Gucci,
07:59paired with California-worthy vintage sunnies. After the video dropped, Hawaiian shirts became one of the
08:04most searched-for trends online. The singer's yellow floral shirt, which became the unofficial shirt of
08:10the summer, is by Bode New York, a slow-made and female-founded brand that uses vintage and antique
08:16textiles to create new and daring pieces. Now that's how you start a trend, Styles. After a public
08:23split from Liam Hemsworth, Miley Cyrus did what Miley Cyrus does, released some insanely cool music,
08:29complete with avant-garde music videos. Her self-directed video for the catchy hit Midnight Sky was what her fans
08:36wanted and needed, an edgy take on her former pop days. As for her looks, the star paired her new
08:42hairstyle and bold red lips with fashions that channeled female rock stars like Stevie Nicks and
08:48Joan Jett. The video featured pieces by top designers such as Chanel, Saint Laurent, Gucci, and Richard Quinn.
08:54We may even like this look more than her ethereal love song and video Malibu, which featured outfits
09:00by Gian Battista Valli and Palomo Spain. Miley's new vibrant look is on another level, a trend all on
09:07its own with more glitter and sequins than even Dolly would dare wear. The star's unique and forward
09:12thinking style has come a long way from her Disney days and even from her Wrecking Ball era. The Bailey
09:18sisters are more than just the talented protégés of Beyoncé. Khloe and Holly have become two of the top
09:24go-to models for the biggest designers. When walking the red carpets or performing in their videos,
09:30these singers can usually be seen in incredible high fashion outfits, often with a unique spin
09:35on twinning fits. Thanks to their many recent hits, the sisters have taken on the role as the new faces
09:41of Fendi's Me and My Peekaboo project. The singers told Vogue, Since we can remember, we have always been
09:47huge fans of the Fendi brand. They also shared that fashion is what helps inspire their music and videos.
09:53Fashion holds a huge place in our everyday life. It allows us to express ourselves and even a
09:58particular song to help shine it in a new light. We love the way fashion helps us complete the story
10:04we're trying to tell in appearances, performances and music videos. Who did better with statement
10:09dressing this year than Ciara? For the singer's new music video for the single Rooted, culture and world
10:15issues come front and center through her fashion choices. The star's outfits underline the important
10:20political and cultural messages of the song. The singer's leather jacket and casual outfits
10:25reference her support of current human rights movements. The fact that she filmed the video
10:29while pregnant with her third child also transforms her looks into a statement on the incredible power
10:35of womanhood. Yep, Ciara actually gave birth a few days after filming the video. The singer told W of
10:41her powerful message, So it's the time of the unknown, and we're making the best of it,
10:46trying to find as many positives as we can in the midst of the storm.
10:50When Taylor Swift released her first quarantine album, yes, this girl wrote, recorded, and filmed
10:56two albums in a year, she single-handedly started a new trend, totally making cottagecore and goth folk
11:02a thing. A work-from-home friendly trend we can all get behind. The music video for the single
11:08Cardigan had a unique moody aesthetic that inspired the trend. Okay, it's not like Taylor invented
11:14cardigans, but that summer the trend started popping up everywhere. Even David Beckham and
11:19Harry Styles were rocking their own version of the granny wear. Taylor's Peter Pan-esque dreamy
11:24vintage dress from the video was also in line with the year's trend of nightwear as daywear.
11:30T-Swift even offered fans her own branded cardigan as merch to go along with the music video's
11:35popularity. The entirety of Lady Gaga's chromatica was a tribute to fashion, art, and surrealism. The
11:41unique pop star actually created a whole universe and world for her new album. The track 9-1-1 was
11:48especially interesting as it became a sort of extraterrestrial fashion show. Leave it to Gaga
11:53to dream up chromatica even in a world of monotone fashion. The video, which is really a mini film
11:59directed by Tarsem Singh, is a nod to arthouse pictures and fashion with endless references to
12:04Gaga's artistic inspiration. Gaga's team of stylists ignored the latest runway looks and instead sought out
12:11custom pieces by designers such as Central Saint Martins alum, Johannes Warnke, Dead Lotus Couture,
12:17and Garo Sparrow. From her asymmetrical ombre dress and cape to the floral alien catsuit,
12:23Gaga donned a wide range of looks that helped pull together her strange universe for chromatica.
12:28Straight from fashion week were also a black lace dress by Alexander McQueen and a sheer look by Diego
12:34Montoya. Nicola Formicetti, a designer who works closely with Gaga, told The Guardian,
12:40With a music video, there's a narrative in place which gives the fashion a life. It is much more
12:45effective and interesting to showcase the fashion through a story to me, almost like watching a short
12:50film rather than watching a catwalk. Back in 2009, Gaga wowed her cult following with the video for
12:56paparazzi, which featured incredible visuals and designs by Alexander Tassau, Thierry Mugler,
13:03and metallic heels, or sculptural works of art, from John Galliano's spring collection of that year.
13:09This Gen Z star has created her own style and popularized a new look for her young audience.
13:15Billie Eilish shows the world that you don't have to wear heels and dresses to be feminine and look
13:20gorgeous in music videos. For her signature look, she's often styled by Samantha Burkhardt,
13:25who helps her put together her on-camera outfits featuring big-name designers like Gucci, Burberry,
13:31and Chanel. Eilish's style is unique because she cares more about adding visual depth to her
13:36incredible music through fashion, with exciting patterns and fabrics. The young singer's pantsuit
13:42style and baggy pants look is a dream for designers who want to dive into their imaginations
13:47and think a little more outside the box. Billie is a great example of how fashion and music videos
13:53and pop stars have evolved over the years, learning to not only show off the latest trends but start
13:59new ones. Music videos are the new runway. In 2020, circumstances meant a lack of fashion runway shows
14:06and red carpets. Basically, the best way to see the newest fashions was through music videos.
14:11Even if we were pretty much only wearing loungewear at home for most of the year, it's still super fun to
14:17watch and marvel at the trends and gorgeous luxury designs. To comply with social distancing rules,
14:22many designers chose to move their shows outside recently. Some designers, however, have decided to
14:28completely give up on the live runway format. Philip Lim, for example, has already discarded show events.
14:34Gucci has also announced recently that they've decided to go seasonless, using influencer, celebrity,
14:40and social media marketing rather than runway shows to show off their collections. But the best way,
14:45recently, to show off fashion has been through music videos. Since the year 2020 mostly took
14:51place from home, music videos became a great alternative to live runway shows for fashion
14:56designers and brands to showcase their collections. But music videos also became a platform much more
15:02accessible to the average audience. It's not just anyone who can sit in the front row, aside Zendaya and
15:08Anna Wintour. Most of us don't exactly get the chance to discuss the latest fashions while shoulder
15:13to shoulder with Faye and Jay. But just about everyone has access to the internet, you know,
15:18where the music videos live. So why shouldn't designers take advantage of a platform that we
15:23all have access to? Is it even possible to think of music without thinking about fashion and vice versa?
15:29Singers and performers have become experts at creating visual stories using fashion, and designers and
15:35brands have caught on to the influential power of popular music videos. No matter the reason, fans
15:40and viewers will always be able to admire the newest styles and trends and a few out-of-the-box ensembles
15:46while enjoying their favorite tunes. What's the greatest music video outfit of all time? Do you think
15:54pop stars will fully replace runway models? Let us know what you think in the comments and subscribe to
