00:00Police officer, Gator, stop!
00:02Driver's making off.
00:04Derbyshire traffic cops.
00:05Pull over in here now!
00:07Might be game on for something here.
00:09It's just gone. Go, go, go, go.
00:12Patrol some of the country's most dangerous roads.
00:15Speed is 4-0. The vehicle's all over the road.
00:19Driving head-on.
00:20He's up the kerb.
00:21Into danger.
00:22Just have warning markers for firearms.
00:25Vehicle's gone.
00:26Get out of the car!
00:28Wow, good.
00:29Designed to look like a mobile phone.
00:31Don't pull away, fella.
00:33With rising crime rates.
00:36Officers are under pressure.
00:38Stop! Get out of here!
00:40Go, Guna!
00:41Come out here now!
00:42You're under arrest.
00:45Police!
00:46With lives on the line.
00:47We're going to need at least three or four ambulances.
00:51Is it fuel?
00:52Right, move away from this car now!
00:54The stakes are high.
00:56It isn't looking good at the minute.
00:57But the traffic cops.
00:59You've flown 128.
01:0011 minutes past two in the afternoon.
01:02You're under arrest.
01:03Conspicional theft of motor vehicles.
01:05Get out of here.
01:06Do not run.
01:07Swap the officer!
01:09A major province!
01:10Right.
01:15Coming up.
01:16Oi!
01:17We're not going with you!
01:18Spit it, yeah!
01:19Come on!
01:19Stop spitting!
01:20Drunk.
01:21This person driving along.
01:22No lights on.
01:23Hands out the window.
01:25Dangerous.
01:26Pull over!
01:27And disorderly.
01:28Get out the car now!
01:30Officers tackle drivers under the influence.
01:33It actually looked like that, did it?
01:37And out of control.
01:39What's happening?
01:40Oh, slap your window's car!
01:41No, you weren't slamming.
01:42It's all.
01:43I'm going to find out how people you are.
01:45And where you live.
01:46Don't make sense.
01:46Do you have any units that can start making their way to the town centre?
02:03Do you have any units that can start making their way, please?
02:05I've had a report of a car versus motorbike.
02:07I believe we do have one casualty.
02:08Suspect vehicles left seen.
02:11Vehicle details at this time are unknown.
02:12But if we've got any units that can start travelling.
02:15Yeah, 2-4.
02:16Traffic cop Rich Morris is responding to a crash involving a suspected drink driver.
02:23It's just been sighted by a member of the public.
02:26It's crashed into him and it's run a red light.
02:32Why is it hurting?
02:34Elbow and my wrist.
02:35Elbow and your wrist, OK.
02:37In Derby city centre, local officers find the biker involved in the crash.
02:42Did you see what happened?
02:43So I was stopping and I could see in my mirror.
02:46I saw like he was not going to stop.
02:48Because he hit me in the back and it like wobbled me.
02:50And I was kind of just like veered to the side.
02:53Right.
02:53And I just couldn't keep the balance on it.
02:55OK.
02:55The rider alleges a black Peugeot drove into the back of his motorbike whilst he was stopped at a red light.
03:02The witness's photo of the car gives police a number plate.
03:13He was really drunk on it.
03:15Did you speak to him?
03:16Yeah.
03:16Yeah.
03:17As soon as I rang the police, he backed off and got his car.
03:19He's not stopping.
03:20He argued.
03:21Any decent person would stop and be helping at the scene of a collision.
03:26And if somebody's just driving off, then why are they trying to hide?
03:30One of us could give you a lift to hospital.
03:32That would be amazing.
03:32Do you want to come and get in my colleague's car?
03:34With the biker on his way to get medical care, Rich and other units begin a search for the black Peugeot.
03:54A car in the wrong hands is a dangerous weapon.
03:57This guy's a potential drink driver.
03:59He's left the scene of a collision.
04:00Because what I don't want isn't being involved in any more incidents.
04:05I mean, it's possibly going back to the home address.
04:09Yeah, 2-4.
04:11The Peugeot has hit police cameras close to its registered address.
04:15Is he going to go home?
04:16Probably.
04:17Whether he's actually got there.
04:24An 8-10-1-0.
04:25Dad.
04:27It's back at the hay chain.
04:30Yeah, it's parked up unattended.
04:35Other officers arrive for backup.
04:41That's the vehicle there.
04:43As a police officer, we never give good news out.
04:45You know, we're not telling anybody they won the lottery.
04:47And that in itself can send people up like a bottle of pop.
04:50But then you add alcohol into that factor as well.
04:52And they do become a nuisance, become aggressive and unpredictable.
04:58Standby.
04:58It's about half a dozen houses in.
05:08Just rang the doorbell now.
05:12That black Peugeot outside, who's that car?
05:15OK, is he in?
05:20Can I come in that way?
05:21The woman says the car's her partner's and that he's inside the address.
05:27Right, where is he in bed?
05:28Has he said anything about being involved in an accident?
05:30Just to clarify, how long has he been in?
05:35Right, is he had anything to drink since he's come out?
05:39No alcohol.
05:41Is there any alcohol in the address?
05:44No empty bottles?
05:45As more officers arrive, the woman says there is no alcohol in the house.
05:52Hello, is the police?
05:54Rich finds a man asleep in bed.
05:57OK, your car's suspected of being involved in an accident tonight.
06:03OK, what's going on?
06:04He's been involved in a collision with this motorbike.
06:10He's stated, oh, I've had a drink since I've come home.
06:12If you've had alcohol in this house, where's the alcohol?
06:16Where is it?
06:17Where's the empty bottle then?
06:18It's in the bin?
06:19What bin?
06:20OK, at the moment, you're under arrest on suspicion of drink driving, OK?
06:25So I can breathalise you and establish if you are over the limit, OK?
06:30Get up.
06:32I'm not bothered breathalising him.
06:34I can smell intoxicants, his eyes are glazed,
06:36so I want to just get in to custody as soon as possible.
06:40Come on, you're a mess.
06:41Get up.
06:41You should be driving while you're drunk, should you?
06:43I have handcuffed him for my safety and trying to get him out of bed.
06:48Come on.
06:48Let's go, fella.
06:49Come on.
06:50Get up.
06:52Get up.
06:52You're coming for me.
06:53Get up.
06:54Right.
06:54Get up now.
06:56Last chance to get up before I drag you out of that bed.
06:58Get up.
06:59Let me out.
07:01What's wrong with you?
07:02You're not listening to me.
07:03No, but I'm listening to you.
07:06Get up then.
07:07He's not complying with what I'm asking, so I'm a bit more thoughtful,
07:10tell him I want him to get out of bed, and that's when things change.
07:16Put it to this door.
07:17Shut up.
07:18No.
07:18Good going.
07:19Well, where are you sharp?
07:20Don't tell me sharp.
07:21Chill out.
07:22No, you shut up.
07:23Calm down, pal.
07:24Calm down.
07:25That's the normal habit.
07:26Calm down.
07:26Don't tell me sharp.
07:27Calm down.
07:28Shut up.
07:29You shut up.
07:30Calm down.
07:30You sharp.
07:31Calm down.
07:31Don't tell me sharp.
07:32Where's your ground?
07:33Hello.
07:34You what?
07:35All right?
07:35Stop.
07:36You.
07:37He just escalates then.
07:39Very unpredictable.
07:40Hold on.
07:41Hold on.
07:42I'm not going to hold down.
07:43Oi.
07:44We're not having you spitting.
07:46It's dirty.
07:47Stop spitting.
07:50We're not having anybody spitting at us.
07:52It's disgusting.
07:53That's an assault.
07:54We're not allowing that to happen.
07:56We will use preemptive force.
07:58Come on, walk with me.
07:59Be nice, man.
08:00Come on.
08:04Don't abuse me, yeah?
08:06You need to stand up.
08:07I'm on zero.
08:09The smell has become increasingly violent.
08:12Yeah, it's good.
08:12It's good.
08:13Yeah, it's good.
08:13Don't abuse me, man.
08:17Don't abuse me.
08:18While officers take the suspect to custody,
08:23Rich looks for evidence.
08:27He's taken a proper dislike to me at this point,
08:29so I thought, you know what?
08:30I'll stay back.
08:31I'll search the bin and see if there are any alcohol containers in there.
08:38Yeah, there's no empty alcohol containers.
08:43I've looked through the bins, and there's absolutely nothing.
08:47Right, this is subject vehicle.
08:49Rich turns his attention to the suspect's car.
08:54You can see, I don't know how he's managed to get home, to be honest.
08:56It clearly, is it a curb there?
08:59You can see that, which is there.
09:00It's tinted the rim.
09:02That has now caused a puncture on this.
09:04He's also, he's got scuffs on here,
09:07as a result of the collision with the motorbike.
09:09We can take paint samples from that.
09:16Inside the car, Rich finds more evidence.
09:19There is some empty vodka bottles.
09:24It's just a bit of a mess, isn't it?
09:27There comes a time where you've got to take responsibility for your actions.
09:30He's chose to go out and get drunk in his car tonight.
09:32We haven't made him do that, but he's angry with me.
09:35He should be angry with himself, really, not with me.
09:37Coming up...
09:39Oh, slap me, I wouldn't stop.
09:40No, you won't slap me at all.
09:42In custody, some shocking threats.
09:45I'm going to find out who you are and where you live, OK?
09:50My vehicle fell in stock.
09:52And the cops spot a car...
09:54No life, so I'm...
09:55Hands out the window.
09:57...putting lives at risk.
09:59Pull over, that way.
10:01She's got the message.
10:07Why is it hurting?
10:18Elbow and my wrist.
10:19Elbow and your wrist.
10:20Did you see what happened?
10:21He's too much drinking.
10:23In the city centre, a suspected hit-and-run crash has left a motorbike rider needing hospital treatment.
10:30Let's give a little bit of a hand, please.
10:32Traffic cop Rich Morris and other officers have tracked down a drunk man, believed to be the driver, at a nearby address.
10:41Oi, we're not having you spitting, yeah?
10:44It's dirty.
10:45Stop spitting.
10:46With assaults on emergency workers on the rise, three-quarters of the UK's police officers have been hurt while dealing with people under the influence.
11:01What?
11:11Come on, whoa, not steady on her feet. I'll give you a hand.
11:14How about that?
11:15All right.
11:15Let's go straight ahead.
11:17All right.
11:18Yes, mate.
11:18You got it?
11:19At police custody, Rich books the man in before breathalising him.
11:25Sarge, how are you?
11:27Good, thank you.
11:27I'm living the dream.
11:28The circumstances of the arrest are, there's information that this chap here was driving around earlier in his vehicle, potentially drunk.
11:36He's been involved in a road traffic collision in Derby, where it's collided with a motorbike, carried on driving, where he's then run a red traffic light, nearly caused another accident.
11:46So, we've then attended the home address, where the vehicle's parked outside, and he's, we've woke him up, where he's then said he's had a drink.
11:55So, he's been arrested, so he's been arrested on, let me finish when he's been arrested for being, let me finish when he's been arrested for being, let me finish when he's been arrested for being on, through a drink.
12:06It's rude to interrupt.
12:06No, but rude, aren't you?
12:08No, but don't shush me.
12:10Well, it's rude to interrupt.
12:10No, you took me to shah when you arrested me.
12:13Yes, I did.
12:13I want to, I want to counteract that, yeah?
12:16This isn't the time for it.
12:18Well, there's got to be some time for it.
12:21Yeah, when you get into it.
12:22Dealing with drunks or people that have had alcohol, you can see it escalating, you look at the body language, you look at how the gesture, and you just know what's coming next.
12:33You know, lads, don't tell me shush, and don't tell me shush up.
12:38Why do you tell me shush up?
12:40Answer it.
12:42Go on.
12:433-1.
12:45Get back over there.
12:47Don't push me.
12:48Don't push me.
12:50Oh, man, cough.
12:51Oh, man, cough.
12:52Relax.
12:53No.
12:54Oh, man, cough, bro.
12:56How would I affect him?
12:57If he's not able to handle people, I'm out of.
13:01The prompt and effective investigation defense to put him on the intoxilizer machine to establish whether the level of alcohol in his breath is above the prescribed limit.
13:11Custody officers have come out and they've kind of surrounded him a bit because he's become unpredictable again and potentially violent.
13:18But you, mate, you're not worthy of dealing in public.
13:22I'll tell you that now.
13:24Yeah, look at me in my eyes.
13:26You're not worthy of it.
13:27I'll slap you out with his cup.
13:29No, you won't slap me out with his cup.
13:31No, you won't slap me out.
13:32No, you won't slap me out.
13:33Who the f*** are you?
13:35Tell him to shut up.
13:36Wake up.
13:37Bro, I'm going to find out who you are and where you live.
13:41Don't make threats.
13:42The cops are going behind you.
13:43That's all right.
13:44No problem.
13:45No problem.
13:46No, put my locker up.
13:47Put my locker up.
13:48It's all right.
13:49You can just talk to yourself.
13:50He's just like this at me all the time and...
13:52Tell him to go away.
13:53Tell him to go...
13:54Tell him to go...
13:55Tell...
13:56You've been very...
13:57Bro, tell him to go away.
13:59Tell that mate to go away.
14:01Tell that guy to go away.
14:02Tell that guy to go away.
14:04Tell that guy to go away before I'm saying any questions.
14:07He needs to go.
14:08Yeah, just because you wear a police uniform, does that really mean you're subjected to
14:13that?
14:14I don't think so.
14:15I'm British, yeah?
14:16British.
14:17You understand me?
14:18You understand?
14:19I'm British.
14:20Don't.
14:21No.
14:22I will do all of us.
14:23Get your f*** hands off me.
14:25I'm British.
14:26Stop being a pig.
14:27No.
14:28Stop tensing up.
14:29I will tensing up.
14:30I will tensing up.
14:31I will tensing up.
14:32I will tensing up.
14:33I will tensing up.
14:34Stop tensing up.
14:35Why?
14:36Relax yourself.
14:37I will relax myself when you relax yourself.
14:39Still got the handcuffs on, but even in handcuffs somebody can be unpredictable and violent,
14:44and he was.
14:45Do you agree to provide two specimens of press for analysis?
14:48No, I don't.
14:49No, I don't.
14:50I warn you again that for you to provide...
14:52I warn you as well.
14:53Let me finish.
14:55Let me finish.
14:57I warn you again that for you to provide either of these specimens will render you liable
15:02to prosecution.
15:03Do you now agree to provide two specimens of press for analysis?
15:05I'm not providing any specimens.
15:08Are there any medical or other reasons why you cannot or should not provide two specimens
15:12of breath?
15:13No, I don't.
15:14I'm not a doctor.
15:15Unless you've got a nurse or anyone who can provide that information and let me know.
15:20But I can't say that in the sun.
15:21Or is that too hard to grasp?
15:27That's it.
15:28That's it.
15:29Fail to provide.
15:30That was the opportunity.
15:31Follow us this way, please.
15:32Don't smile.
15:33Don't smile at me.
15:34Just come this way.
15:35Because you know you never know when I'm going to be able to help you.
15:36You never know.
15:37Come on this way.
15:38Yeah.
15:39You'll be, you'll be, you'll be, you'll be.
15:40No, you know.
15:41No.
15:42No.
15:43We can't force somebody to give us a breath sample.
15:57We can request it.
15:58We can't force it.
16:00He's going to need an interview because he's not being seen driving.
16:08Yeah.
16:09But he ain't going to be fit till morning anyway, is he?
16:11And I'm certainly not interviewing him anyway.
16:16It's a straight up offence and a failure to provide a sample of breath.
16:19There's somebody who can pick that up in the morning, interview him, and they've got
16:22enough evidence and information there to look at charging him with leaving the scene
16:27of an accident and failing to provide a sample of breath.
16:30Hello.
16:31Where was you while I was getting abused?
16:33Behind you.
16:34Oh, was you?
16:35Yeah.
16:36When I first started this job, the abuse that you sometimes get, it was difficult to handle.
16:40When you put the uniform on, people expect you to be Superman or whatever.
16:44It's like, but we're not.
16:45We're just normal people at the end of the day.
16:47However, it does bounce off you a bit more.
16:54Please, could somebody let me out?
17:19Less than 10% of UK license holders are under 25 years old.
17:24But they account for a quarter of drink-dried casualties.
17:29And it's up to traffic cops like Matt Cork to catch them before they become another statistic.
17:42I can only hazard a guess that the reason that people drink drive is they genuinely believe
17:47that they're never going to get caught.
17:49Why should they sort out taxis, sort out alternative travel plans to somebody thinking,
17:54well, you know, I've had two pints and I think I'll be all right.
17:58The hard and fast rule is if you're driving, don't bother drinking. Simple as.
18:03As Matt patrols Chesterfield town centre, a car catches his attention.
18:10Got this person driving along.
18:13No lights on.
18:15Hands out the window.
18:19The car overtakes on a blind bend.
18:21Matt signals to the driver to pull over.
18:28Hey, target 28.
18:30But they don't respond.
18:31We've got a vehicle failing stop in Chesterfield town at the moment.
18:41Whereabouts, Corky way, Chesterfield?
18:44Steakhouse, stand by.
18:47With concerns the driver is trying to make off, traffic cop Craig Dawes races to assist.
18:53Corky, we're above you if it's coming on your off-site to Galleon.
19:04Pull over.
19:06That way.
19:08Stand by.
19:09Make contact with the driver.
19:12Corky, you're below downhill.
19:15Up hill.
19:17Female driver.
19:18She's got the message.
19:27We're about to say now, Corky.
19:29Must part.
19:35Hello.
19:38I take it you didn't realise lights and sirens meant to stop?
19:41No, I did. I was trying to find a light to say to me.
19:43Right, OK.
19:44The reason I've stopped you, one, got no lights on.
19:48Yeah.
19:49That'd help.
19:50Two.
19:51What was that overtake all about on that taxi?
19:55Silliness, wasn't it?
19:56Yeah.
19:57With passengers hanging out the window as well.
20:00So, do you want to jump out?
20:01I'm going to do some checks with you.
20:02Alright.
20:04Craig arrives as backup.
20:08Grand.
20:09I take it's your car, is it?
20:10Yes.
20:11Lovely.
20:13The driver is just 18 years old.
20:17Jump in there for me.
20:18And I can just give you a VRM.
20:21Yes, yes.
20:22Inside her car, are two male friends.
20:26Receive or eat?
20:28How are you doing?
20:29I'm all right, are you?
20:30No.
20:31Good, good, good.
20:32Where have you been tonight then?
20:33What's made us not stop, or?
20:34I'm not driving.
20:35I know you're not.
20:36I know you're not driving.
20:37Right.
20:38Have you had a drink tonight?
20:39I have, yeah.
20:40Okay.
20:41Due to the manner you're driving, I'm going to make a requirement of you to provide me with
20:44a sample of breath for analysis, okay?
20:46I have to warn you.
20:47If it's fair to do so, it may render your label to prosecution, alright?
20:50Are you happy to give me a sample of breath?
20:52Yeah.
20:53Lovely.
20:54Okey-doke.
20:55Deep breath in.
20:56Yeah.
20:57Blow through it.
20:59When it comes to drink, you'll often get those little signs, before they've even provided
21:03a sample, that they're going to be over.
21:05When they go, oh no, I'm sure I'll be fine.
21:08I've only had two pints, I've only had two pints.
21:12And you're already looking at them, you can smell the beer on them.
21:16Super.
21:17The way that their eyelids are sort of almost starting to droop, you know that they're going
21:21to blow over straight away.
21:22And a lot of the times, with the people that blow high numbers, you just kind of think,
21:26what on earth were you thinking when you turned the keys in that ignition?
21:30Legal limit's 35, okay.
21:32You're blowing 77.
21:35So you're more than double?
21:37Yep.
21:38You're more than double limit.
21:39Alright.
21:40So at 22.59, you're under arrest on suspicion of drink driving.
21:47Coming up...
21:48We're going to be going out to the police station now.
21:50The young female driver...
21:52Can I bring my mum up?
21:53...faces up to her potentially life-changing decision.
21:57She's looking at a driving disqualification, which will have a real impact on the start
22:01of her life.
22:02Have you had anything to drink tonight?
22:04I've had about four cans of dollars.
22:07And another suspected drink driver...
22:09Get out the car now!
22:11...causing trouble.
22:12It didn't have to be like that, did it?
22:15I've got a vehicle failing stop.
22:33In Chesterfield.
22:34No lights on.
22:35Hands out the window.
22:36Pull over.
22:37That way.
22:38She's got the message.
22:40Traffic cop Matt Cork has pulled over an 18-year-old driver.
22:45Jump in there for me.
22:47You're blown 77.
22:49So you're more than double?
22:50Yep.
22:51You're more than double limit.
22:52Alright.
22:53So at 22.59, you're under arrest on suspicion of drink driving.
22:58So we're going to be going down to the police station now.
23:01Can I have a moment?
23:03When we get down there, you can have somebody informed that you've been arrested.
23:06Do you need a purse or anything like that out of your car?
23:08Yeah.
23:09All the medical stuff.
23:10Okay.
23:11Yep.
23:12We will sort that out.
23:13Right.
23:14My colleague's going to park it up somewhere where it's not going to impede these buses.
23:16Your passengers will be walking.
23:18So...
23:19Can I speak to him at least?
23:21No.
23:22Not at the moment because you're under arrest.
23:24Alright.
23:25Um.
23:26Chuck is your key's duck.
23:27All we need is car key.
23:31What's going to happen tomorrow?
23:33Tomorrow, you'll be charged with drink driving.
23:35You'll end up going to court and they're going to take your driving licence off you.
23:39Alright.
23:40But we'll get to that when we come to it.
23:42Still going to get an evidential sample from you.
23:44Alright.
23:45We'll see what that comes back as.
23:46You're going to have to make your own way.
23:51She's been arrested.
23:52Alright.
23:53We'll just go now.
23:54Yeah.
23:55You're not wanted or anything.
23:56So...
23:57Mates aren't too bothered.
24:01They're probably thinking how they're going to go.
24:03They're not going to be bothered.
24:04They're getting a free lift home, aren't they?
24:06Fortunately, she's not nipping home now.
24:08She's nipping off to custody.
24:09Probably going to lose her licence.
24:10Maybe a job.
24:11You know, the joys of drink driving.
24:17The minimum punishment for a first time drink driving offence is a 12 month ban.
24:22And a fine of up to £5,000.
24:29Some drivers face six months in prison.
24:31And all will have a criminal record.
24:36Dealing with the amount of drink drives that we do.
24:38The way that people behave.
24:39Every now and again, you'll get somebody who still doesn't think they've done anything wrong.
24:43And to be honest, it's infuriating.
24:45Or you'll get somebody who's then going to burst into tears.
24:48And, you know, it's the worst issue in life.
24:50And that's the point.
24:51It dawns on them.
24:54If you've got any questions along the way, ask them.
24:57Would I get the opportunity to ring either my mum or dad?
24:59Because I have got work in the morning.
25:01So I need to let them know.
25:02Initially, your right is to have them informed.
25:05So it would be a member of the custody team letting them know that you're with us.
25:09But you're safe and well.
25:11I've no doubt that if it's quiet enough and they're not run off their feet,
25:15there's no reason they shouldn't be able to sort you out with a phone call afterwards.
25:19Alright?
25:20So you can speak to them yourself.
25:21Call me.
25:22Arrested on suspicion of driving whatsoever prescribed low alcohol after being stopped driving a vehicle with no lights on.
25:39She's provided a sample of 77.
25:41OK, I'm satisfied the arrest is a law fault.
25:44So I'm going to authorize your detention, alright?
25:46Would you like anybody to notify you?
25:48My mum.
25:49My mum?
25:50OK.
25:51Right.
25:52We're going to follow this gentleman here.
25:53Follow me, please.
25:55The young driver is taken for an evidential breath test.
26:03Keep going.
26:04Keep going.
26:05Keep going.
26:06Keep going.
26:07Keep going.
26:08Keep going.
26:09Keep going.
26:10Stop.
26:11Lovely.
26:12That young lass has found herself on the wrong side of it tonight by a bit of a silly, irresponsible decision.
26:17She'll be well aware of the effects of alcohol.
26:19And I dare say, as thought, I'll risk it.
26:22The limits will affect you differently depending on what you've had to drink, what you've had to eat that day, generally how you're feeling yourself.
26:30What you have provided is 67 and 68, so you're way over the legal limit, OK?
26:37Based on that, you'll need to be with us about four hours before you can go.
26:43So it's just coming up for midnight, so it'll be about 4 a.m. before we can release you.
26:48To ensure drink drivers don't get behind the wheel again while under the influence.
26:55Police keep them in custody until their alcohol levels are back within normal range.
27:01She's now going to be looking at ultimately a driving disqualification, which will have a real impact on the start of her life and potentially her career options going forward.
27:1167 and 68.
27:14In order?
27:15Yeah, in order.
27:18As much as she's classed as an adult, she's 18, she's found herself in a position where she wants a mum, almost a bit of a deer in the headlights.
27:26The driving disqualification, they're getting arrested, they end up in a prison circle overnight, probably isn't going to compare to the disappointment that the parents are going to show when they realise that their 18-year-old's been arrested for drink driving.
27:39In the UK, most serious collisions involving drink drivers happen at night.
27:50For the police, it's vital to get those under the influence off the road.
27:54Go ahead.
27:55Just doing an area search.
27:56Tending the Langley Mill area.
27:5724, thank you.
27:58We're in a residential area.
27:59It's a very busy Saturday night.
28:00PC Chris Wells-Jackson is on the lookout for drink drivers.
28:03Cool.
28:04A car with a faulty headlight grabs his attention.
28:05Sometimes you just get a feeling, if you're behind a particular vehicle.
28:06It's a car with a faulty headlight.
28:07It's a car with a faulty headlight grabs his attention.
28:12Sometimes you just get a feeling, if you're behind a particular vehicle and you look at the driver and their demeanour goes to show that they probably shouldn't be driving.
28:27They get quite nervous, they're doing things that a normal person wouldn't necessarily do.
28:46An ACF4 code 2, please.
28:53Yeah, pretty tough.
28:55Certain Audi.
28:57Audi A3, S5 and black.
29:01For insurance, no thoughts.
29:04Received.
29:05I've got it stopped.
29:06Do you want to come and join me?
29:11Yeah mate, I know where you are.
29:13Unsure of how the driver might react, Chris radios PC Andy Swift nearby.
29:19I'll go and join him until we know it's alright.
29:23Hello.
29:24I've only stopped you because your lights are out on your back and you've got a light out on the front.
29:29Yeah, no problem.
29:30Have you had anything to drink tonight?
29:32I have, yeah.
29:33I've had about four cans of Stella's.
29:35Have you?
29:36Yeah.
29:37Just stop smoking that for me then because you're going to have to be breathalysed, aren't you?
29:39Yeah, yeah, yeah.
29:40Alright, just chuck that on your passenger seat for me.
29:42The ethanol in some vapes can affect the accuracy of a breathalyser test.
29:47When did you have your last drink?
29:49About ten minutes ago.
29:50I'm not going to arrest you yet because I need to breathalyser you and see if you're going to.
29:53Yeah, yeah, yeah.
29:54However, I'm going to detain you because I believe that you may be unfit to drive through what you've told me.
29:57Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
29:59Are you well known to us?
30:00A little bit.
30:01A little bit.
30:02Is this your vehicle then?
30:03No, it's my cousin's.
30:04This is your cousin's.
30:05Does he know you've taken it?
30:06No.
30:07No, so you've talked to it as well then.
30:09Yeah, yeah.
30:10My colleague's going to come join me in a minute.
30:12I'll get him to bring your breathalysers over and we'll go from there.
30:14Alright.
30:15Just keep that down because I need to breathalyser you.
30:17Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
30:18But that interferes with it, doesn't it?
30:20I don't know, does it?
30:21Come on, I'm playing ball with you.
30:23Hey.
30:24For somebody that's intoxicated, they can become very unpredictable.
30:27Where all they're thinking about is themselves and how they're going to get themselves sorted,
30:31then it can become very difficult and dangerous for us.
30:33Alright, my colleague's here now, so.
30:35Right, because you've told me that you've had four stellas,
30:38I'm going to require you to provide me a sample of breath for analysis, okay?
30:40Are you happy to provide me a sample of breath for analysis?
30:42Wonderful.
30:43So you had your last can of stellar about ten minutes ago, you think?
30:46Well, we'll wait another five, six minutes then before we do this.
30:49Five, six minutes?
30:50Five, six minutes?
30:51Because I have to wait 20 minutes?
30:52No, because that interferes with this, doesn't it?
30:54So, it's on the roof of the car here.
30:56The driver still won't give up his vape,
30:59so the cops may not get an accurate alcohol reading from him.
31:03Get out of the car now.
31:05Do you want gassing?
31:07Get out of the car now!
31:09It didn't have to be like that, did it?
31:13It's gassing.
31:18Right, right.
31:19Give me your arm then now!
31:20Give me your arm now!
31:21You were being compliant, now you're playing up.
31:27Right.
31:28Are we sorted?
31:29Are you going to behave yourself?
31:31Do you want to sit on your arse, or do you want to stay on your front?
31:33Because you're in a puddle at the moment.
31:36If you want to be silly, this is what happens, isn't it?
31:39Alright?
31:40I've been right with you up till then.
31:41And all that over, all that over of eight.
31:43Put you against this wall.
31:44Sit up.
31:45Put him back against the wall.
31:47Sit up.
31:48Yeah.
31:49There were no need for it, was there?
31:51Forget the van, I think.
31:53And how are you taking your chair for?
31:55Good.
31:56Loosen them a little bit.
31:58I'm going to get two fingers there.
31:59Two fingers there.
32:00This lad's been a little bit silly, and we've had to drag him out his car and take him to the floor.
32:04Would you just ask Amber Valley if they've got a van spare, because he may cause us some issues shortly.
32:09And he's a bit wet, because he's been in a puddle.
32:11Yes, yes, I believe they're aware.
32:13He's compliant at the minute, but we've obviously had a few little issues with him.
32:17Plenty of thoughts.
32:18Drink driving's a very selfish act, but unfortunately a lot of people decide now that they think they can get away with it,
32:24and they are making that decision knowingly, and it's putting everybody else at risk.
32:28It's frustrating for us, because we know that we've got to put ourselves at risk sometimes
32:32to make sure we take those people off the road, and that could be putting ourselves at risk
32:37actually getting hold of that person, getting them out of the vehicle.
32:40It's a dangerous game that we play sometimes, but we still have to do our job.
32:45Right, so because you've been driving a motor vehicle, and you've told me that you've had a drink,
32:49so therefore I've had the suspicion, I've already given you the requirements you've said you're going to provide,
32:54so if you can, Curt and I start to see your lips around the tube, let's all tell you to stop.
32:59Stop, thank you.
33:0678.
33:07So that's double, and a little bit more.
33:10OK.
33:11He's blown 78 at three minutes past one, so he's under arrest for that,
33:17and he's also said that he's swapped the vehicle from his cousin, so he's under arrest for that as well.
33:22As well as being more than double the alcohol limit, and admitting to taking the car without consent,
33:28the man doesn't have a current driver's licence, and he's not insured to drive this car.
33:34A few empty cans in the car, which I'm assuming he's drank whilst he's been in it,
33:39because he said he's been living in it for the last few days, so.
33:41And very accurate to what he said, it's four cans of Stella.
33:46And he's vape.
33:48More officers arrive to help.
33:51Right, come and turn the face, it's warm.
33:54He was calm to start off with, and then for some bizarre reason, just because he couldn't have hold of his vape,
33:59because I needed to do the breath test with him, he kicked off.
34:01So, of course, we ended up dragging him out of the car, which we didn't want to do.
34:04And then we've had a bit of a roll round with him, but he's just a bit unpredictable and went up and down,
34:08so we'll get him off in the back of the van, and we'll get his car seized.
34:13Coming up.
34:26Caught at more than twice the limit.
34:32Just stand up here, stop being silly.
34:35This driver's intent on causing trouble.
34:38Just stand here, no, don't walk off.
34:40Listen, you can't just walk off, you've got to listen to what I'm saying.
34:59Hello.
35:00You alright?
35:01In East Derbyshire, PC Chris Wells Jackson pulled over a driver who needed breathalysing.
35:07Have you had anything to drink tonight?
35:09I have, yeah.
35:10I've had about four cans of strawberries.
35:13But really wanted to vape.
35:16Get out the car now!
35:20It didn't have to be like that, did it?
35:22It's not going to be like that.
35:23Both of them, you want to go.
35:24In the next meter, you need to come tighter than the right foot, perhaps, to the left.
35:30Once we get in there they'll be coming off as long as you replying.
35:33Well, once we get in there, they'll be coming off as long as you comply, innit?
35:48Stop banging your head!
35:53Stop banging your head!
35:56We'll sort it when we get inside.
35:58It's too tight, look!
35:59From what I've been told, they've been sorted.
36:02You put two fingers in like that.
36:05Go on.
36:07That's two fingers.
36:09Never.
36:10A hundred percent, that is two fingers in that.
36:13But I can get two fingers in it, and I've hardly got the thinnest fingers in the world.
36:16I've got a bit of weak about me, so...
36:19Well, so have I, I've got chunky fingers and I can get them in.
36:27Stop banging your head.
36:32What are you trying to achieve, exactly?
36:45What are you trying to achieve?
36:47I want my raw hand cup loosened to the same as my left one.
36:51But while ever you're banging your head and showing some sort of aggression, we're not going to loosen your cuffs, are we?
36:57You're banging your head against the cage. It's not exactly normal, is it?
37:02Are we going to be good?
37:05Good lad, come on.
37:06I've got you, I've got you.
37:08I've been waiting for you and I will be all the way through.
37:11Careful.
37:13Up to that door.
37:15To charge his suspect with drink driving, Chris needs to test him on the evidential machine, while his alcohol levels are still high.
37:25If I take them off, are we going to behave?
37:26Yeah.
37:27Yeah.
37:28Have I not quite operated?
37:29Well, we...
37:30You thought what?
37:31Have I not quite operated?
37:32Mostly.
37:33We just had a bit of a disagreement at the roadside, didn't we?
37:36The devices that we use at the roadside are a rough indicator of the amount of alcohol that's in your system.
37:41And the machine now and in custody is a much more accurate and evidential machine.
37:45There's always that question of, are they going to be under when we get to the custody suite?
37:49Because every moment, you're dropping that alcohol out of your system.
37:52I've witnessed driving on the road.
37:54He got a couple of lights out of the vehicle, so I've stopped it.
37:57He's admitted to have been drinking four cans of Stella prior to driving.
38:01And also that he'd swapped the vehicle from his cousin.
38:06So we've got to make those inquiries, however at the moment he's been arrested.
38:09What we're going to do, we're going to do an evidential breath test, then you're going to get better down a bit.
38:12Can you get some clothes?
38:13Yeah, they'll sort you out, yeah.
38:14We'll get you some dry ones.
38:16Yeah.
38:17Okay, so I require you to provide me two specimens of breath for analysis by means of an approved device.
38:22Yeah, no problem.
38:23I've got to do this first and then I'll sort you the dry clothes.
38:26Listen, listen, listen.
38:27I'm not going to do anything in the...
38:29Well, if that's a failure to provide, then that's a failure to provide.
38:32I'm not, I'm not doing it.
38:34Just stand up here.
38:35Stop being silly.
38:36You need to go answer these questions.
38:37Listen.
38:38Come and stand at the desk.
38:41Just answer the questions and then we can get on with it and I can get you some dry clothes, can't I?
38:46There's always something in the back of your mind when you're in that scenario.
38:49And your experience tells you that you need to be on edge constantly because you never know who you're dealing with.
38:55Are you going to come and do the breath test now?
38:57Just stand up.
38:58No.
38:59Don't walk off.
39:00Listen.
39:01You can't just walk off.
39:02You've got to listen to what I'm saying.
39:03Keep my head in.
39:04Listen.
39:05Right.
39:06If you're going to carry on, you're going to get stripped in in the cell.
39:08All right.
39:09No.
39:10Stop.
39:11Stop.
39:12Stop tensing up.
39:13You are tensing up.
39:14You're tensing up now.
39:15Are you going to come and do the breath test?
39:16Yes.
39:17Right.
39:18Yes.
39:19Yes.
39:20Remaining professional, remaining calm and making sure that you deal with people in the right manner is absolutely imperative to make sure that we get everything right.
39:29Have a seat.
39:30Just take a couple of deep breaths.
39:31We'll chill out and then we'll be all right, won't we?
39:33When I tell you to do so, relax, take a deep breath, place the mouthpiece in your mouth and make a good seal around it with your lips.
39:40Then blow steadily and evenly until I tell you to stop.
39:43Once this is done, so it'll take about five minutes.
39:46I'll get you dry clothes.
39:47We'll get you some snap.
39:48We'll get you a drink.
39:49Then you can get your head down for a bit.
39:51Deep breath.
39:52And go.
39:53Keep going.
39:54Keep going.
39:55Keep going.
39:56Keep going.
39:57Keep going.
39:58Keep going.
39:59Keep going.
40:00Keep going.
40:01Perfect.
40:02Well done.
40:03It's a 69 or 70.
40:04They're your results.
40:05OK?
40:06So that's twice the limit.
40:07A good few hours with your head down.
40:09You'll be interviewed in the morning about the TWAC.
40:11And then you're going to be charged with the drink driving element.
40:13Would you like me to come get you some dry clothes?
40:15Yeah.
40:16I will do that.
40:17This chap's been very up and down.
40:18He's continued to be quite difficult in custody.
40:21But eventually he's been happy to provide two samples of breath in the evidential machine.
40:26And he's blown a lower evidential reading of 69, which is twice the legal limit.
40:31So he'll have to be interviewed in the morning about the TWAC element, if we can actually establish that's happened.
40:36He jumped out that he's been living in that car for the last couple of days drinking.
40:39And I'm sure he's probably been driving around absolutely hammered as he was tonight.
40:43We'll see what we get in the morning.
40:45But realistically, he's getting charged.
40:46He's going to get disqualified.
40:47So it's a good result.
40:48After four hours in a cell, Matt Cork's 18-year-old drink driver is sober enough to be charged.
41:07You don't have to say anything, but it may harm your defence if you don't have to mention now something which you'll lay to a line in court.
41:13Anything you do say may be given in evidence, OK?
41:15I'm going to give you a bail.
41:16You need to go to Chesterfield Magistrates Court and answer your bail.
41:20OK?
41:21I do have to tell you if you fail to attend and answer that bail, there'll be a warrant out for your arrest.
41:26Matt will drive the young woman home.
41:28OK.
41:29That's fine.
41:30You're free to go then.
41:31Do you want to pop your jump on now?
41:33It does drop a bit fresh out there.
41:35Cheers, Sarge.
41:36All right.
41:37Take care.
41:46Last year, Derbyshire police prosecuted more than 1,200 drink drivers and attended over 70 collisions where alcohol was involved.
41:56At no point has ever crossed my mind to think, having had a few pints, I'll, you know, forget the taxi, forget the five-minute walk, I'll just take my car, I'll risk it.
42:05The freedom that you get being able to drive, it's not a given right, it's a privilege at the end of the day.
42:10So why am I going to put my driving licence in jeopardy by taking that risk of getting behind the wheel after I've had a few drinks?
42:18I'm a driver on a road, my partner's a driver on a road.
42:24We drive around with our kids in the car, as friends in the car.
42:27And it could be us that's been hit by a drink driver.
42:30And it does scare the life out of me.
42:33Realistically, if you're going to have a drink, just don't drive.
42:36And if you plan on driving, don't have a drink.
42:39A lot of fatalities and serious injuries do come from drink and drug drivers becoming more prevalent again.
42:45It's very frustrating for us because if you need a lift somewhere, you can either ring somebody to come and get you or you can get a taxi or you can get a bus or you can walk.
42:52It just shows a blatant disregard for other people.
42:55If you're a drink driver, you've got to be lucky every time.
42:58We just need to be lucky once.
43:00In this episode,
43:07the suspected drink driver who left the scene of a collision with a motorbike.
43:11I take pictures as well.
43:13He is too much drinking.
43:15Was convicted for failing to provide.
43:17No, we're not going to be helped.
43:20You never know.
43:22He was disqualified from driving for three years and given a six-month community order to complete rehabilitation and alcohol treatment.
43:31Got the vehicle failing to stop.
43:34Hands out the window.
43:35No lights on.
43:37The 18-year-old driver who was under the influence.
43:40Pull over.
43:42That way.
43:43She's got the message.
43:45Was sentenced to a 17-month disqualification, reduced by 17 weeks if she completes a drink driver safety course.
43:54Arrested on suspicion of driving whatsoever prescribed low alcohol after being stopped driving a vehicle with no lights on.
44:00She's provided a sample of 77.
44:03She was also fined and ordered to pay court costs.
44:07Have you had anything to drink tonight?
44:10I have, yeah.
44:11I've had about four cans of dollars.
44:13And the driver who was pulled over with faulty lights and wanted to vape.
44:17I didn't have to man handle you, did I?
44:21Wasn't charged with taking the car without consent.
44:24But is due to appear in court for drink driving and driving without a license and no insurance.
44:31If found guilty, he could be facing a driving ban and prison time.
