01:07OWL TV
01:08Visits the oldest Indian Pueblo in North America with Cayenne
01:11To learn something about Pueblo Indian culture and traditions in New Mexico
01:15Do you like living here at the Pueblo?
01:21Yeah, I love it, it's great
01:23Summer you go down the river and swim
01:25Catch fish
01:27Or go horseback riding up those stones
01:31Do you learn a lot from your elders?
01:33Yeah, a lot
01:34I learn to hunt and survive in the mountains
01:38And the girls
01:39And the girls
01:40Learn how to bake bread
01:42You know that
01:43That's the way we learn
01:44From our mothers
01:46And grandparents
01:47That's what you're doing with your grandchildren?
01:48Uh-huh
01:49That's what I want them to learn
01:51While we're young
01:52While we're young now
01:53Okay
01:54So that way we can carry on by tradition
01:57Well my kids, my daughters know how to bake
02:00What type of wood do you use?
02:02Oh cedar
02:04That's the only wood that we use for baking and for the oven
02:09And you said it turns white inside when it's ready
02:12Uh-huh
02:13Yeah, when it's ready
02:15Well you have to clean it out
02:18What we're doing is plastering the house right now
02:22Getting ready for the winter months
02:25Did you learn to do this as a child?
02:27Oh yes
02:28My father used to mix it like this
02:31Mix it like this
02:32I used to watch him all the time
02:33And let me do it
02:34It looks so fun
02:35It looks like fun
02:36So
02:37You want to try it?
02:39Sure
02:40What is adobe?
02:42What is adobe?
02:43Well it's just a mixture of sand, clay, and straw
02:48The adobes are dried out in the sun
02:51For one thing
02:52But they have the similar mixture as the plaster does
02:56Only thing there's more straw on it to protect it
02:58And you do this once a year?
03:01Once a year
03:02Once a year
03:03You do that
03:04Oh
03:05How long does it stay hot after you clean it all out?
03:19Until the beds are about done
03:22Doesn't putting the water in it cool it down a little bit?
03:26No?
03:27No
03:28I'll put this paper in there so see how hot it is
03:34If it burns, it's too hot
03:36Uh huh
03:37So I have to cool it off a little bit
03:40Do your parents use that method?
03:42Uh huh
03:43Is it too hot?
03:45Oh
03:46This is right
03:47Do you plaster to protect the original adobes?
03:52Oh yes
03:53Because once the adobes get wet
03:55They really soak in
03:58And they'll just turn into dirt
04:01And mud all over again
04:03How long has it been used?
04:06Long
04:07All those buildings up there are almost over a thousand years old
04:12And they last, don't they?
04:13They last
04:14They place all the bread in at once?
04:15It all bakes at once?
04:16Yeah, just once
04:17But if they're left out over
04:32You have to build another fire to put it in
04:35Uh huh
04:36Again
04:43What do you do once it's all cooked?
04:46That's quite a lot of bread
04:48Uh huh
04:49Do you eat it?
04:50All of it?
04:51Are you going to do the whole room?
04:53Do you want to try this?
04:54Yeah, I'll try it
04:55Do you want to try it?
04:56Try it
05:01All you have to do is repair them
05:03Make sure that you plaster them every year
05:05And they'll last
05:07Outlive us
05:10If you could put a little more
05:12Okay
05:14More than that?
05:15Yeah
05:16You want to do more than that?
05:17Yeah, that's
05:19A little more up there
05:20It might be making your job harder for you instead of easier
05:24So you think you can do that?
05:27A little bit
05:31They smell so good
05:32Is it heavy?
05:33Yes
05:34A lot of bread
05:35There, now you can help yourself
05:48Go ahead
05:49Where's the other ladies?
05:50Where's the other ladies?
05:51Ladies go first
05:52There are ladies on the
05:57There's some
05:58There's some
05:59Put it all in
06:00There's some
06:01Put it all in
06:02there's a good how long have you been making pots oh no I think it's 20 years
06:27how did you learn to do it by my grandma she used to make all these kind of bowls you know
06:33not like me you know like those but she used to make big ones like these ones and would she
06:41use them in our house oh yes we do this deal used them for cooking and for special using you know
06:49we still use them do you enjoy doing this oh yes can I try someone go on try a little bit oh it
07:06feels so neat yeah it feels good when you touch it it's smooth and soft mother earth
07:14that's what it is it's not it's not any kind of clay it's a mother earth how long did it take you to
07:24learn how to do this so well it takes patience to learn if you're not patient in doing this you
07:34you can't do anything
08:04do you find it easy or difficult to keep the traditions of the tribe going if the families
08:16are for the tradition then the kids will you know eventually just grow into it some people are on
08:23the counter jobs they go away to bigger cities and then they lose contact the traditional ways
08:31so I think it's very important that we do keep our traditions going
08:37both the duck-billed platypus and the ordinary frog have this thing about temperature the
09:04platypus won't go swimming unless the water is warmer than 10 degrees Celsius and the frog just
09:10won't consider eating anything unless it's 10 degrees Celsius outside however platypus don't really care
09:20what temperature it is when they're hungry owl TV visits a farm in New Mexico where Rochelle gets a
09:28hands-on lesson on cow milking from Seth Brown so this is the bucket that we put the milk in
09:35milk her right into this
09:37put down a little stool next to her make sure she has plenty of hay to eat
09:47and then you brush her off brush off any little sticks or pieces of grass or anything that she's been lying on
09:58why do you do that that's so that nothing falls in the bucket no little pieces of grass or anything that
10:05might be on her stomach then you kind of punch her a little bit like this and that that's that is the
10:17same thing that the calf does and it stimulates the milk to fall down and makes it possible to milk her
10:25you can feel that starting to get more milk in there already
10:28um this cow is at the end of her lactation cycle she's just about to have a new calf
10:47so she only has about two quarts she's probably had three of them how many she could have you'll
11:06probably just have one they usually just have one calf at a time there's not enough room in there for
11:12two of them would you like to try milking the cow okay okay put the bucket there okay now kind of rubber
11:24yeah she gets used to you
11:27feels weird
11:32how do you get the milk out of it
11:37okay grab like this up at the top of her teeth and and squeeze like that you kind of punch up like
11:46that a little bit and then you grab up here and squeeze the top so the milk can't go back up in
11:51to her udder it stays in here and then you and then you squeeze the bottom of the teeth like that
11:58oh make make sure that this is is uh make sure your top two fingers um squeeze the top off and hold it
12:10squeezed and then um yeah hold it right about there and then squeeze with your bottom fingers it takes a
12:19while from there punch up a little bit okay let's see maybe you should try this one this one has more milk in it
12:34there
12:49punch up on and then squeeze another thing you can do is you can punch up on it like that and
13:00then just kind of pull down squeeze with your fingers and pull down like that
13:04oh and see how that works first
13:10yeah there you go
13:19it doesn't hurt to use both hands when you first started anyway anyway you can get the milk out this
13:30line
13:30does it hurt the cow no she likes it she likes the way it feels she thinks it's her calf calf nursing on her
13:42she's she's almost dried up now so um the back tooth have very little milk left in them when when she
13:58has her calf her udder will get huge and she'll have several gallons in there
14:06you tail gunners minarski brofie get some sleep we have a mission in exactly six hours

16:21this is sophie mite reporting on the great leaf rolling weevil adventure
16:29this is sophie mite reporting on the great leaf rolling weevil adventure
16:41one day while mark nicki and i were out bird watching
16:44get lost nicki we stumbled across an amazing sight
16:51is it a bird it wasn't a bird but the nest of the leaf rolling weevil
16:57a leaf rolling what they're beetles nicki you find them on hazel bushes during the summer
17:02that's when they roll their leaves watch what normally takes 20 minutes for the weevil to roll
17:08we got to see in seconds thanks to the special motion speed up feature on my new binoculars
17:14after the female weevil rolls the leaf once she bites a hole in it to plant her egg
17:20once the egg is laid she then begins to roll the leaf she makes sure to roll the leaf tightly tucking
17:26in the edges as she goes she continues to roll and tuck roll and tuck all the way to the top
17:32after the leaf is completely rolled up she finishes it off with a magical twist and voila
17:38the leaf roll is in a vertical position with the leftover flap over the leaf like an umbrella so it
17:44doesn't get wet neat it's quite a feed of strength when you think about it the weave was only five centimeters
17:49long that would be like you or me trying to roll a huge sheet of metal all by ourselves
17:55hmm i'd like to get a closer look at how she does that so would i let's shrink you always get to
18:02see that so say it let's shrink great now how are we gonna get up there jump
18:21hey it actually works that leaf roll looks a lot bigger from up here i'm going to investigate look
18:29sophie there's the weevil about to roll its leaf as mark and i look closer we could see the weevil in
18:35action mark took out his watch to see if it really takes her 20 minutes to roll the leaf would you
18:41believe it it does look mark she's starting to cut the stem that makes the leaf easier to fold see how
18:47she weakens it by biting the veins she'll do that until it's soft and workable then came the hard part
18:53folding the leaf that requires a lot of muscle power on the part of the weevil mark said he was
18:59getting tired just looking at her no wonder she has a strength of 10 then suddenly mark and i noticed
19:05something strange crawling down the leaf what do you think it is i'll give you three guesses hey guys
19:13look at me i'm in the leaf whoa he's in the leaf yeah i can see that i'm beginning to feel like a
19:23cabbage roll i suppose we should help him yeah but let's let him suffer a little bit first
19:29this leaf is beginning to pick up right he really sounds like he's suffering amazing this must be the
19:39whore she lays her egg i just hope nikki's careful check out those hooks on that weevil's feet well she
19:46needs them in order to grab onto that heavy leaf i just hope she doesn't use them to grab onto nikki
19:52ow i'm starting to be squashed in here yep i think it's time to intervene this isn't funny anymore
20:01where are your friends when you need them don't worry nikki i might rescue you just then the weevil
20:08decided it was time to lay an egg mark got so nervous he nearly fell off the branch watch out nikki
20:14the weevil's about to drop her egg so that's what it was wow look at that egg it looks just like a
20:24jelly bean had my favorite color too orange when the weevil wasn't looking nikki was able to sneak
20:32up to the hole come on nikki the weevil's about to roll her leaf again i noticed i'm coming
20:45hi guys you got out of there in the nick of time come on let's get out of here we can slide down
20:51do i have to where's your sense of adventure at home well let's go home and get it
20:57oh you guys are no fun at all let's get big good
21:13i guess that leaf roll really protects those weevil's oh boy i was sweating there it's called
21:28beer not only that when the egg hatches the leaf roll provides food for the hungry larva
21:32that's why they call it the egg roll get it get it this is sophie might saying may all your adventures
21:41end in good fortune wow
21:53a new family moved into the hoop club today only they weren't exactly human we called them soft
22:09people they are life-sized puppets that sometimes seem almost alive take just old nylons and something
22:18that your um your mother or your sister don't wear anymore so they don't get angry you just stuff
22:25them you stuff two pairs you can even take toilet paper or just um kleenexes and stuff them with that
22:31you don't have to have no particular have to have cotton or anything like that but it would be good if
22:36you did what is it we're stuck two pairs and you can make the arms shorter or longer
22:48that is so good oh well yeah maybe if you cut right here yeah okay and you took out some stuff i think the
23:00most difficult part was the sewing because i kept on picking myself
23:20we came here because now we're gonna have new decorations for the clubhouse and stuff i know
23:25because we've had our same decorations for a while yeah yeah we can make them like put in a tree so
23:31people said that we're making them put them in the elevator or in the trees yeah yeah you guys i have
23:35to ask you something does this look okay is the head so really good except you can see this really
23:42darkly yeah like really hard so maybe what you want to do is cut that part off yeah is it going to be a
23:47a girl or a girl or a little apple okay so like this cute i think a little bit higher higher guys i got
23:59some hair all right you can put yarn strings of yarn or wool and just put them down stitch them down like
24:10looking down that's nice i took the tops of spoons and then i took a piece of felt and i glued it into
24:21the middle of the spoon so it looked like a pupil now you can put the hair on no you should cut it
24:30i don't think some of the hair hey guys look i've got some fabric fabric after we finished stuffing them
24:40we um found some old clothes and we put it on the soft people we have a system in ties and hats and jeans and stuff
24:51i think the most difficult part was the putting on the clothes because it it kept slipping off your body
25:09there was also jewelry and and weeks we didn't just put the jewelry where it's supposed to go
25:14like we did all sorts of stuff like made belts with jewelry and um with bracelets sometimes you know
25:21we can make earrings and a whole bunch of stuff like that
25:27i thought like i put on makeup on my doll and i thought that was
25:30quite fun it has a bite mark
25:37back slicked i have to make the slips it doesn't look good without them
25:45if you have a lot if you have a big space in your house and like you don't have very much to fill
25:52these would be great decorations for your house they're really pretty things to put in
25:56they're also very nice presents like instead of giving a doll that costs fifty dollars you could make
26:01one of these things make one of these things make three of them
26:12it's
26:24okay
26:34New day, it's a brand new start
26:56New world, we have a brand new heart
27:04There's so much to see and do
27:09For me and all my friends
27:10There's just no way to hold it back
27:12Let me tell you when that feeling comes
27:16Over me, it's my natural energy
27:21I can't sit still, got to go, go, go
27:25Take my word for it, you will know
27:29When that feeling comes over you
27:33Right all the time
27:35That's your cue
27:36Let it lift your heart
27:38Move your feet
27:40Dance that beat
27:42Got to move
27:43Dance that beat
27:45Dance that beat
