Zoe Saldaña talks to The Hollywood Reporter at the 'Emilia Pérez' carpet and opens up about the biggest challenges of her role. Plus, she reveals how she hopes to get more complex roles involving singing, acting and dancing.

00:00This is such a beautiful film, and I feel like it asks so much of you as an actress, a dancer, a singer.

00:04What was most challenging for you?

00:07Not getting in my own way.

00:10And sort of just being in Rita's skin and understanding her journey.

00:15You know, it takes discipline to not sort of like judge a character as you're approaching it and you're putting it together.

00:21You kind of go, well, I wouldn't do what she did.

00:24And it's like, well, there's no, it's not a she, it's an I, it's a me.

00:27And I, where am I?

00:29I'm, I'm, I'm desperate right now.

00:31I need a way out.

00:32I, I'm overworked.

00:34I'm burnt out.

00:34I'm, you know, I'm talking about as Rita and I needed to be sort of like in that headspace.

00:39And once you're in there, then all of a sudden, this whole story takes a brand new life.

00:45You know, Emilia Perez is Emilia.

00:47Jesse's Jesse.

00:48You know, Epifania is Epifania.

00:51And so it became a wonderful, wonderful experience.

00:55Did you ever think a role like this would come along for you as an actress?

00:58I wanted it.

00:59I wished it.

01:01I always thought like, I'm going to have to make it for myself.

01:03And when is that going to, you know, when am I going to be able to do that?

01:07Juggling all the things that I'm juggling.

01:10You know, it just, it just proves that the power of manifestation means that, that unconsciously

01:14you wake up every day with a purpose and, and you make it happen because the universe

01:19is listening.

01:20This is something that is all encompassing of, of all the art forms that I, that I love,

01:25you know, and, and, and I'm just happy that I'm finally getting to share more of, of what

01:31I, I can do.

01:32And, and I will be doing by the grace of God.
