00:00Before we get into the movie, though, we have to talk about music.
00:03So, obviously, you're an R&B legend, and another one is being honored tonight, Usher.
00:08So, what does that mean to the culture?
00:10It means everything.
00:12First of all, you know, there's been a few moments where you see somebody being honored
00:19or something significant happening for them, and then you can find yourself going,
00:24oh, that's great.
00:25But then when you see moments like this happen, it feels like it's long overdue.
00:30So, 30 years Usher's been at it.
00:34He's put it all on the line.
00:35He's kept us all entertained.
00:38He's my brother.
00:38I love him.
00:39I'm the biggest Usher fan, period.
00:42He's made a difference in my world.
00:44When I first got on after the Coke commercial, you know, he let me play opposite him in his
00:49My Way video, and we shot that here, downtown L.A.
00:53So, I couldn't be more proud of all that he is, all that he continues to do.
00:59And B, and how he has figured out a way to reinvent himself over all these years.
01:04And what's your favorite song by him?
01:06I got too many.
01:08You know, listen, I'm an A-side and a B-side Usher.
01:13You know what I'm saying?
01:13And so, man, My Way, what y'all know about a Super Mario?
01:23Come on, it's too many.
01:25It's too many.
01:26Too many.
01:27Confessions.
01:28Yes.
01:28Oh, God.
01:29Too many.
01:29Too many.
01:30So, tell me about you guys' upcoming movie and the relationship that you guys curated
01:37to be able to bring that forth on screen.
01:39Well, there's a film which everyone is saying this is the most important film that's historically
01:48based out of the West Coast.
01:50This is a historical moment that took place on the West.
01:54Just like N.W.A. and Compton, straight out of Compton, 1992, April 29th, when the Rodney
02:02King verdict came out and they let all those officers, white officers, off for damn near
02:08killing that man.
02:09I believe he may have died and came back to life.
02:12They was determined to snatch the soul out of that black man.
02:15And we did a movie called 1992 based on a heist that took place while the whole city
02:23was distracted from looting and rioting and burning down.
02:27And for me, it's a full circle moment because I was living in Watts.
02:31I was in the looting and rioting.
02:32And we got Snoop Dogg on board as a producer.
02:36And this is Chris who played my son in the 1992 movie.
02:40And it's got Ray Liotta, rest in peace, Scott Eastwood, directed by Ariel Broman.
02:47And it's dropping August 30th, Friday.
02:49And we're excited.
02:50Lionsgate is going all out for us.
02:53Absolutely.
02:53What have you learned working along the line with you?
02:56I learned to stay in it, you know.
02:59It's easy to get distracted.
03:01It's easy to think that things should happen faster than they are happening.
03:05And I learned to just be patient and have fun with the process and play a little, you know.
03:11Stretch yourself, work on your craft, stay on your grind.
03:14And it will all happen the way it's supposed to.
03:16And Taraji is hosting tonight.
03:18And you worked with her, of course, on Baby Boy.
03:21And I know you have to have seen the movie as well.
03:23So what does that mean to see a fellow actress, a creative, step into this space of hosting?
03:29I'll take this one first.
03:31Baby Boy is a classic.
03:33Let me tell you something.
03:33It's a classic.
03:35And it influenced the culture through and through.
03:38Again, they still play this movie about 120 times a day on BET.
03:43And so if you haven't seen Baby Boy, you missing out.
03:47Yeah.
03:49I think we got one in Baby Boy.
03:53But here's some perspective.
03:57Rest in peace to John Singleton who put me and Taraji on.
04:00John Singleton is responsible for so many significant black writers, directors, producers, actors, hair, makeup, wardrobe.
04:12Ruth Carter has won two Oscars.
04:14She was our stylist for Baby Boy.
04:16She was our stylist for Four Brothers.
04:19Also directed by John Singleton.
04:21Taraji, nothing about her career surprises me.
04:26She's always been a star since the moment we met and auditioned together.
04:29And just beyond blessed to just witness her grace, her magic, her being so fierce.
04:38I mean, this woman came from D.C. with $13 and her son.
04:43And her father of her child had just got killed.
04:47So for her to be here, she is literally the walking, breathing manifestation of determination
04:54and being overly ambitious and determined to win.
05:00So all of it makes me happy.
05:04Very honored to be here.
05:05Very happy to call her my sister.
05:071992 is coming.
05:09And rumor has it.
05:10Hollywood Reporter.
05:11Rumor has it.
05:14The trailer's about to drop.
05:16I can't tell y'all when.
05:18But it's like it feels very, very...
05:24Ray Liotta, we love you.
05:25Rest in peace.
05:26Love you, Ray.
05:26Thank you so much for your time.
05:27Nice to meet you, Ray.
