00:00thank you for modeling for us grandma Vicki was always a huge ball of light
00:13everybody was welcome with open arms Ryan was just a funny cute kid but as he grew
00:28older that's when trouble started Vicki's fear was pretty intense but her love for
00:37Ryan was also mom for your own safety get him out of that house lifetime worth of
00:46hate and anger just brutality and savagery
01:10oh I know what's in there
01:1655 year old Vicki Burks is enjoying the festive season with her family I sit at my parents house
01:23when my mom's handing out presents Ryan is playing a game in the background sitting next to my mom when
01:32things like this would happen like Christmas time stuff he kept to himself for the most part
01:37Christmas was probably the most exciting time for Vicki
01:42grandma really did love Brian so anytime the whole family was together she was as happy as could be
01:52Vicki is born in Bradenton Florida in 1953 but when she is young the family moved to Ohio where she
02:05meets Martin Burks I think he went to come to high school and our first date was actually a Swedish
02:12day dance me and Vicki got married on July 17 1971 I was 19 and Vicki was 18 years old it was a great day
02:23Mike was born on November 26 1971 definitely exciting you know brand new start new house new family
02:38Jason was born in March 1976 and seemed good at the time
02:46I believe she would always be like that I wasn't the one that solved the problems she did
02:58it probably started around 1985 and it just developed from that point forward
03:06we got divorced after that she was seeing this young guy and she ended up marrying him
03:15it wasn't very long it took for Vicki to realize that things just weren't quite the way she had hoped
03:23they would be now she's six months pregnant she called me one day and made the comment that she just
03:31wasn't very happy and I said tell me what you want to do I'll see what I can do to help you out
03:37and we made arrangements for her to come back to Springfield Vicki came back in 1986 in December
03:47mom mom you're on camera camera we were just kind of happy to have my mom back and our parents back
03:55together but when she moved back she was already pregnant with my younger brother Ryan was born on
04:03May 1st 1987 I was excited I was happy that it was happening I was 11 years old when Ryan was born I was
04:15really looking forward to being an older brother dad took him and raised him as his own it's May 1988 the
04:26family celebrate Ryan's first birthday Ryan sitting on my mom's lap so they're just unwrapping presents
04:34can you get the hang of it yeah Vicki loved her sons tremendously she really did oh Vicki was quite
04:49protective of him because she felt like she was the only one that he had I told Vicki that he's just
04:59like the other two boys there'll be no difference he called me dad all the time because you know I was
05:06there from day one this is when we got remarried in Kentucky I was excited it was back together we were
05:20happy and now I got three kids we moved into the house on middle urbana in that house in my eyes was my
05:36last home the Berks family gathered to celebrate Jason's high school graduation
05:48check check check all my family was there my friends my band at the time was there
05:55it's time to wake up the neighborhood my mom's in a good mood she's excited her baby graduated
06:01oh she was bubbly any music you get her going
06:07one of my friends come over that was trying to introduce me to somebody that person would end up
06:15being my first wife mama Burks down there with her two sons bring her down the alley and nearly three
06:23years later in January 1997 20 year old Jason ties the knot Vicki was definitely excited about Jason
06:31getting married it was a big deal
06:33Ryan didn't want his brother to get married he didn't want him being with this girl you know
06:44she's invading my area
06:46actually of the day of the wedding he behaved but he was only nine see he wasn't really acting up
06:55a lot there but as he grew older that's when trouble started
07:02my first child Christina was born on March 29th 1999
07:15because my mom never had a daughter of her own this was her chance to raise a girl
07:23say hi papa
07:25what happened this one
07:29grandma's helped me open my presents
07:31all of the gifts grandma absolutely spoiling us
07:35Christina
07:37hi Christina
07:39here's Ryan
07:41Ryan was 11 years old when Christina was born
07:45being an uncle was one of the few things he actually cared about
07:50I always thought of Ryan as like my big brother
07:53my nickname for him was literally Uncle Bubba because I couldn't say brother
08:00and I followed him around everywhere like a lost puppy anytime I was over at my grandparents
08:07in a way it was me and Uncle Bubba against the world
08:15play it right
08:19Ryan wasn't super popular he had some friends
08:24once he started hanging out with the wrong crowd
08:27getting a negative reaction for him was his form of entertainment
08:32if he could make you angry
08:38he would laugh
08:40when Ryan is 14 years old
08:48he has his first run-in with the police
08:50when I got home from work
08:52I got a phone call from the sheriff's department
08:55and they were holding Ryan
08:58the deputy sheriff explains to us
09:02that these boys were in the press box
09:05at the football field
09:06at Kenton Ridge
09:08they had gotten onto the loudspeaker
09:12and were shouting profanities
09:15for the whole neighborhood to hear
09:17he had to apologize to the school
09:20for what he had done
09:22he got a small fine
09:24and he had to do community work
09:28it didn't seem to faze Ryan
09:31didn't care at all
09:33it was quite apparent
09:35how much different he was
09:37from the other two boys
09:39I mean it was like night and day
09:41and it just kept getting worse
09:43there's two paths you can go along
09:47the right way of doing something
09:49and the completely wrong way
09:52he would always choose the wrong path
09:54every single time
09:57Mike needs a Santa Claus outfit on
10:08he looks like Santa Claus
10:09sitting there handing out gifts
10:10so this is Christmas of 2001
10:13that's my brother Mike there
10:17there's my mom
10:18my dad's filming
10:19Christmas for Ryan
10:35as he got older
10:36he didn't partake as much
10:39he would look at his gifts
10:41and open them
10:42and then he would be gone
10:43Ryan spent probably six seven hours a day
10:52playing video games
10:53it kept him from getting in trouble
10:56more than anything
10:57in 2002 Ryan was charged with disorderly conduct
11:05from yelling out death threats out of a car
11:08that was new
11:09he never did that before
11:11Ryan has to pay a fine
11:14and attend counseling
11:15I could see
11:17that this was just going to keep getting worse
11:20we were at the point then
11:24we just didn't know what to do
11:26Stephanie
11:28hi
11:29hi
11:31my second child Stephanie
11:33was born on January 26, 2003
11:36hanging out with me and my sister
11:40really helped my grandma
11:42take a step back
11:43from living with Ryan
11:46and the other one goes with the other one
11:48we were her highlighter
11:50of life's innocence
11:53in a way
11:54I see baby girl
11:56I see
11:56Mike is playing Santa Claus
11:59he needs his outfit on
12:00thank you Mikey
12:02there's another one of those
12:05that's saying Christina
12:06that's a giant one
12:08that doesn't have a pop
12:10I think that we probably thought
12:16that he'll grow up
12:17he'll mature
12:17and he'll settle down
12:19but that never really happened
12:22it only progressed
12:24worse and worse
12:25yeah Ryan took it off
12:27when he's mad
12:28he's always
12:29in January 2004
12:31the court places
12:3316 year old Ryan
12:34on probation indefinitely
12:35for drug abuse
12:37the way I saw Ryan
12:39growing up
12:40and all of his violent outbursts
12:43that was just Ryan being Ryan
12:45I had this idealized
12:48version of my uncle
12:51that was Uncle Bubba
12:52and that was the good person
12:54that I knew
12:55but Ryan was the monster
12:58that everybody else knew
12:59they were two different people
13:01but the same entity
13:03in 2004 Ryan decided to take
13:10Vicky's car out
13:11which he wasn't allowed to
13:13when he got home
13:16after that incident
13:17Vicky was gonna
13:19call the cops
13:20and report a stolen car
13:21and he said
13:25if you call the cops
13:26I'm gonna hurt you
13:28we're constantly
13:31trying to figure out
13:31what to do
13:32how do we deal with it
13:34the court charges Ryan
13:37with menacing
13:37and violating his probation
13:39they place him
13:41in juvenile detention
13:42for a minimum
13:43of six months
13:44the last time
13:45he went to juvenile
13:46he was turning 18
13:48at that time
13:49the judge straight up
13:51told him
13:52he said
13:52if you don't
13:53straighten your act up
13:54you won't be going
13:56to juvenile now
13:57you'll be going
13:58to the jail
13:58Vicky still was his mother
14:02and I kept telling her
14:04let him figure this out
14:05and she couldn't do it
14:08she couldn't
14:09stop taking care of it
14:10I wasn't scared of Ryan
14:14I felt off by his energy
14:18hey we're here today
14:20I'm gonna introduce you
14:22to a movie
14:23so this is Ryan filming
14:26now across the street
14:27they had just built
14:28some new houses
14:29for a senior community
14:31we'll tell you a story
14:33during this movie
14:35see over there
14:38that's where the old
14:40people live
14:41and Ryan got in trouble
14:42a few times there too
14:44because they called
14:44the police on him
14:45man these
14:47they don't like me that much
14:49I was hoping that
14:51you know
14:51once Ryan matured
14:53things would get better
14:55and they only got worse
14:57in May 2006
15:01Ryan hits another car
15:03and speeds off
15:04he is charged with
15:05one count
15:06of hit and run
15:07we get a call
15:08from the sheriff's department
15:09to come pick him up
15:10which I did
15:12he come back
15:14and he was just
15:16mad as a horn
15:18at everybody
15:19I told him to leave the house
15:22go find some place to stay
15:23but you're not living here
15:24I was chasing him out of the house
15:27and he started just going
15:29in the kitchen
15:30and that's where Vicky
15:31was standing
15:31Ryan ended up pushing
15:33my mom down
15:34and she fell on her arm
15:37broke her arm
15:38in four places
15:38and from there
15:40he went into the front room
15:42where Mike was standing
15:43he pushed him down
15:45and kicked him in the face
15:46police were called
15:48and then he was arrested
15:50Ryan was charged
15:52with domestic violence
15:53they served him
15:56180 days
15:57but they reduced that
15:59to 90
16:00Ryan never showed
16:02any remorse over that
16:03none
16:04he was still angry
16:06because he got
16:0790 days in jail
16:09every time I'd kick him out
16:11she would let him
16:12back in the house
16:13and I kept telling her
16:15not to do that
16:16she just couldn't do it
16:19where is he going to go
16:20what's he going to do
16:22as bad as Ryan treated
16:25my mom
16:25my mom still loved him
16:27my mom still protected him
16:29I'm like mom
16:31something bad is going to happen
16:33get him out of that house
16:35Mike passed away
16:49in December of 2007
16:52he was driving to work
16:55one day
16:56had a massive heart attack
16:58and died instantly
16:59probably the worst day of my life
17:04Mike, see ya
17:07root the bingos on to the victory
17:09Mike was kind of the glue
17:11to kind of help
17:12keep them all together
17:14Ryan is back in jail
17:20on drug-related charges
17:21but attends the funeral
17:23with a deputy sheriff
17:24so when Ryan
17:25came to the funeral
17:26he was shackled
17:28by his ankles
17:29and by his wrists
17:30Ryan's crying his eyes out
17:34and I was kind of in shock
17:35because that's the first time
17:36I really saw Ryan
17:37show that kind of emotion
17:39and I remember going up to him
17:43I gave him a hug
17:44and I'm like
17:44Ryan
17:45we gotta stick together
17:46Christina
17:55these two are above us
17:57if you want to give them to him
17:58it's Christmas 2008
18:00and Ryan's at home again
18:01with his family
18:02if you look
18:03he's not interested in anything
18:05that's going on in this point
18:06I didn't want him to come back home
18:09I really didn't
18:102009
18:14I was driving Ryan
18:16and a friend
18:17to his party
18:18we got in an argument
18:20because I didn't want
18:21his friend in my truck
18:22I was mad
18:25I said
18:25I am not taking that kid anywhere
18:26I don't want him around you
18:28Ryan was smoking a cigarette
18:31and he put it out
18:32on my cheek
18:33so then I filed charges
18:37I was the only one
18:39that wasn't scared
18:40because I knew I could handle it
18:42but Vicky was the only one
18:45I was concerned about
18:46I didn't know Ryan
18:49was capable of such violence
18:51I'm like mom
18:54keep him out of that house
18:56he is going to kill you
18:58but her reaction was
19:01I don't know what to do
19:03he's my son
19:03I can't let him live
19:05on the streets
19:05one occasion
19:08when we got home
19:09the truck was missing
19:11so I drove around
19:13never found it
19:14come home
19:15and there's the truck
19:15so I walked in the house
19:19and I told him
19:20I said
19:21you're not to take that truck
19:22I did report it stolen
19:24because he shouldn't
19:26have been driving
19:27when the police showed up
19:30at the house
19:30they grabbed him
19:32and hauled him away
19:33the police arrest Ryan
19:35because of an outstanding
19:36warrant for domestic violence
19:38from his attack
19:39against Martin
19:40he was given
19:42nine months in prison
19:43when Ryan was locked up
19:48my parents
19:49were stress free
19:50but whenever Ryan
19:53would come back
19:54you could cut detention
19:56with a knife
19:57when he came out of prison
20:00he was definitely worse
20:01he was nasty
20:02I had to put a lock
20:06on my bedroom door
20:07to keep him
20:08out
20:09we never knew
20:11at any time
20:13what he was going to do
20:14or when
20:15or to who
20:16we were so desperate
20:19we were trying to figure out
20:20how
20:20we could get him
20:22in a situation
20:23like a halfway house
20:24just getting away from us
20:27Vicki was so upset
20:30that she wrote a letter
20:31to the judge
20:31I'll read it for you
20:33Honorable Judge
20:35Ryan Dillon is our son
20:37and he threatens us daily
20:39he says if he goes back
20:42to jail
20:43when he comes back
20:44he will kill us
20:45or burn the house down
20:47we feel our safety
20:50is a concern
20:51we didn't get a whole lot
20:54of response from it
20:55you know
20:56because he's an adult
20:57they were just trying
21:00anything
21:01they needed help
21:03and they didn't know
21:03what to do
21:04so I was trying
21:08to get my parents
21:09to move to Florida
21:10my dad thought
21:12he could just buy
21:13a duplex
21:14and have Ryan
21:16live in one side
21:17and then they could live
21:19in their separate house
21:20they came down here
21:23to visit me
21:24just to see
21:25if they liked it
21:26Ryan was
21:27acting great
21:29he was very relaxed
21:30we thought
21:31okay this might work
21:33when we got back home
21:36from that vacation
21:37things were normal
21:38for a short period of time
21:40but then
21:41everything started
21:43coming back again
21:44and it was
21:46progressively getting worse
21:48Vicki's fear
21:51was pretty intense
21:53but her love for Ryan
21:56was also
21:57she just wanted
21:59what was best for him
22:00and to protect him
22:02she was his mom
22:03he just couldn't stand her
22:08it was so obvious
22:09you could see it
22:11May 8th of 2012
22:17I had come home
22:19from work
22:20and I noticed
22:22the pickup was missing
22:23if Ryan got in an accident
22:28we could get sued
22:29and lose everything
22:30just because of him
22:32when he got home
22:34Vicki was very upset
22:36the main concern
22:38with Ryan was
22:40we had no idea
22:41what to expect
22:43he was relentless
22:46he would not let up
22:47on arguing with his mom
22:49the argument
22:50continued
22:51until
22:521 o'clock
22:53in the morning
22:54the worst part
22:56was him standing
22:56at the door
22:58beating on it
22:59and screaming
22:59at both of us
23:00he shouted
23:02he might as well
23:03kill us both
23:04and just take everything
23:05when I get up
23:10I would give her a kiss
23:11before I went down
23:12and got cleaned up
23:12and went to work
23:13after putting the lock
23:17on the door
23:17I would lock it
23:19when I walked out
23:19just to make sure
23:21she was okay
23:22I knew Ryan was awake
23:24because I could hear him
23:25in his room
23:25I went to work
23:28every day I'd come home
23:30at lunchtime
23:31when I got home
23:34Ryan was standing
23:35in the kitchen
23:37that was not Ryan
23:39he would normally
23:39be asleep
23:40Ryan said to me
23:43I wish he hadn't
23:44told mom about the truck
23:46I asked Ryan
23:49I said hey
23:49where's your mom
23:50and his response
23:52she went shopping
23:53with her sister
23:54that was Vicki's
23:55day off
23:56so I didn't think
23:58anything about it
23:59after I went back
24:02to work
24:02and finished out
24:03my ship
24:03I come back home
24:05and the truck
24:07was gone again
24:08I'm looking around
24:12Vicki's nowhere
24:14to be found
24:15I called her sister
24:19and she informed me
24:22that she hadn't
24:22been with Vicki
24:23now I'm a little nervous
24:26so I just kept
24:28calling everybody
24:29no sign of Vicki
24:31anywhere
24:32911
24:35911
24:36uh yes
24:37um
24:37I think I need to
24:39report a missing person
24:40911
24:52911
24:53what's going on there
24:54we have a son
24:55leaving with us
24:56and you have records
24:57on him
24:57I'm sure
24:57Ryan Dillon
24:58we have a pickup truck
25:00that's also missing
25:01and my wife's car's here
25:04she's not
25:05as far as I can tell
25:07she's been missing
25:08since at least
25:09six footers
25:09when
25:10uh
25:12the deputies arrived
25:14on the scene
25:14they met with
25:15uh
25:16Martin Burks
25:17I responded
25:19to meet with
25:19the uniform
25:21sergeant
25:21and deputy
25:22that was on scene
25:23investigators
25:25take Martin
25:25to the sheriff's office
25:27to be questioned
25:27I immediately called
25:29Clark County
25:30prosecutor
25:30Andy Wilson
25:31he found some
25:33smudges of blood
25:34and said
25:35hey Andy
25:35something's not right
25:36at this scene
25:37with my experience
25:39and gut instinct
25:40it appeared
25:40that we might have
25:41had homicide
25:42on hand
25:42I request
25:47that special agent
25:48Brian White
25:49respond to process
25:50the scene
25:51a lot of the blood
25:53stains that we saw
25:54were
25:55airborne at one point
25:57meaning
25:59they could have been
26:00discarded from
26:01some sort of weapon
26:02you could see
26:05kind of the movement
26:06of where that blood
26:07had been flung
26:08and it was right above
26:10where that chair was
26:11and on the floor
26:13were a couple
26:15of divots
26:16he's like
26:19I think
26:19whatever happened
26:21happened
26:21right here
26:22the way the blood
26:25was disturbed
26:26something had been
26:27dragged through it
26:29everything flows
26:30from the kitchen
26:31to the back porch
26:32and there's a doorway
26:33there
26:34items were piled
26:37on top of it
26:38to make it look like
26:39it's never been used
26:40however those items
26:42also had blood
26:43stains on them
26:43and Brian said
26:45I bet our bodies
26:46down there
26:46it was an entrance
26:53into a cellar
26:54we could immediately
26:57see blood stains
26:58leading down
26:59from the steps
26:59and at the bottom
27:02of those steps
27:03we find
27:04a body
27:05Martin Bergz
27:13gave us information
27:14that she had a tattoo
27:15on her ankle
27:16when we saw the body
27:19we was able to see
27:20the tattoo
27:20we were able to identify
27:23the body
27:24as Vicki Bergz
27:25the trauma
27:28to her body
27:28was probably
27:29one of the worst
27:29I've seen
27:30it looked to us
27:32that there was
27:33some sort of
27:33a blunt object
27:34that was used
27:35to beat her
27:36we found
27:39in the laundry room
27:41there were clothes
27:42that tested positive
27:44for blood
27:44then we knew
27:45we did have a clean up
27:47type situation
27:48everyone that was on scene
27:52or had contact
27:53with Vicki Bergz
27:54were considered
27:55a possible suspect
27:56it was important
27:58for us to interview
27:59Martin
27:59so you don't have
28:01anything to do
28:02with Vicki's disappearance
28:03how can you prove that
28:05because I was a worker
28:07she disappeared
28:08the whole time
28:09I clocked in at
28:10probably about
28:126
28:12I'm guessing
28:136.38
28:14and I clocked out
28:15exactly at 3.15
28:17but I didn't come home
28:19and lunch
28:19so was Ryan home
28:22at 11.30
28:24what was his demeanor
28:27calmer than he was
28:29the night before
28:29quite a bit
28:30so when Marty was
28:32interviewed by
28:33the sheriff's detectives
28:34he gave a pretty good
28:35timeline of what
28:36he had done
28:37the morning
28:38that Vicki went missing
28:39he made the comment
28:41at lunch time today
28:42he wished I hadn't
28:44told him all
28:44about the truck being gone
28:45I just kind of
28:46blew him off
28:47because I didn't want
28:48to get an argument
28:49with him on my lunch break
28:50I was able to
28:51obtain statements
28:52from his employers
28:53of his schedule
28:54for that day
28:55verifying that
28:56he was at work
28:57at around
29:0010.30
29:01that evening
29:02our advocate
29:03and the detectives
29:04went in that
29:05interrogation room
29:06and told Marty
29:07that his wife was dead
29:08I was shocked
29:15I was upset
29:17I was mad
29:19first words
29:21out of my mouth
29:22is
29:22Ryan did this
29:25he made comments
29:26like
29:26it's one of these days
29:28one of these days
29:29you people aren't
29:29going to wake up
29:30or something like that
29:32you know
29:32one of these days
29:33I will get even
29:34I wanted them
29:36to catch him so bad
29:37and I didn't care
29:39what they did
29:40or how they did it
29:42based on the information
29:46that we received
29:47Ryan Dillon
29:48was our prime suspect
29:50when a suspect
29:53flees from a murder
29:55somebody who's got
29:56a criminal history
29:58you're worried about
29:59the safety of anybody
30:00who comes across him
30:01at that point
30:02it's a race against time
30:04to get him into custody
30:05before he can do
30:06something else
30:07we had put a
30:09be on the lookout
30:09for the Dodge Dakota
30:11pickup truck
30:12and checked
30:13to see if anybody
30:15may have ran
30:15the license plate
30:16we had found
30:18that a deputy
30:19from all glace county
30:20around 70-80 miles
30:22north of Springfield
30:23had stopped
30:24the pickup truck
30:25for a traffic violation
30:26at 2.29 p.m.
30:29the deputy found
30:30that it was
30:30Ryan Dillon
30:31that was driving
30:32the truck
30:32he issued him
30:34a written warning
30:35and let him go
30:38about his way
30:38I get a call
30:47and it's my dad
30:49he said
30:52Jay
30:52I've got bad news
30:54your mom's dead
30:56and it wasn't an accident
30:58I said
30:59oh my god
31:01Ryan killed mom
31:03and he's like
31:04yes
31:04all I can think of
31:06is
31:07my brother's
31:08on the loose
31:08where's my kids
31:09my mom sat me down
31:12on the couch
31:12grabbed my hand
31:13and she said
31:14Ryan killed grandma
31:16I remember
31:18just screaming
31:19what
31:21and I just
31:23remember
31:24feeling like
31:25my entire world
31:26had been shattered
31:27she loved him
31:29with everything
31:30in her heart
31:31and soul
31:31and that didn't
31:33matter a lick
31:34to him
31:34I
31:37don't remember
31:38when
31:40I started crying
31:42until
31:44after I processed
31:45that
31:46the noise
31:47I was hearing
31:47was me
31:49screaming
31:50and crying
31:51into my mom's chest
31:52on May 10th
31:552012
31:56the medical examiner
31:58carries out
31:58Vicki Burks' autopsy
32:00the coroner
32:01described her manner
32:02of death
32:03as blunt force
32:04trauma to the head
32:05both of Vicki's
32:07pinkies were
32:08broken
32:09on both her hands
32:10and appeared to me
32:12as in a manner
32:12like she was trying
32:13to protect herself
32:14we asked
32:17Martin Burks
32:18if he would
32:19look around
32:19the residence
32:20and see if
32:20anything was missing
32:21that would resemble
32:22a blunt instrument
32:23and he later reported
32:25that an aluminum
32:27baseball bat
32:27that was kept
32:28in the mudroom
32:29was missing
32:30I received a call
32:35at the Delavan
32:36Police Department
32:37had located
32:38the truck
32:39the Delavan police
32:43officer found
32:44Ryan Dilling
32:45walking down the road
32:46he lies about
32:49having the keys
32:51to the truck
32:51he lies about
32:52being involved
32:53in the truck
32:53he initially
32:54gives them
32:55a fake name
32:57after Ryan
32:59was arrested
33:00we sent
33:02a team of
33:02detectives
33:03investigators
33:03up to Wisconsin
33:04to conduct
33:05an interview
33:06what's going
33:07on with this
33:07truck
33:07this guy
33:14is just
33:15fabricating
33:16and making
33:17up these
33:17bizarre stories
33:18detective
33:20Bronfield
33:20came into
33:21the interview
33:21later on
33:22we're here
33:23investigating
33:23the theft
33:24of the
33:25motor vehicle
33:25and we're
33:27also
33:27here to
33:29conduct
33:30an investigation
33:31on the death
33:32of your mother
33:33you know
33:34she was murdered
33:35what we really
33:44want is we
33:45want him
33:45to make a
33:46confession
33:46on May 14th
33:56of 2012
33:57Ryan was
33:59formally charged
34:00with Vicki's
34:01homicide
34:01Ryan requests
34:03to speak to
34:03a detective
34:04from Wisconsin
34:05called Shannon
34:06Illingworth
34:06she had developed
34:08a little bit
34:08of a rapport
34:09with Ryan
34:10like I said
34:11whatever's happened
34:12has already happened
34:12there's nothing
34:13we can do about it
34:14all we can do
34:15is move forward
34:15I just don't want
34:17to get blamed
34:18for something
34:18that I didn't do
34:20detective Illingworth
34:21interviews Ryan
34:22on May 15th
34:24hoping to get
34:24a confession
34:25I could see
34:26in your eyes
34:27you're turning
34:28about something
34:29right now Ryan
34:30but if they're not
34:31going to tell you
34:32the truth
34:32then the next
34:33best thing
34:34is to give us
34:35easily disprovable
34:36lies
34:37single or married
34:38widowed
34:39you were widowed
34:41you were married
34:42she died
34:43or just disappeared
34:46he gave us
34:48lie after lie
34:49after lie
34:50that we
34:50we very easily
34:52could disprove
34:53you realize
34:54you never even
34:55asked me
34:55how she did
34:56there was none
35:07of it
35:07because he
35:07was the one
35:08who did it
35:08and he knew
35:08exactly
35:09what had happened
35:10on May 18th
35:14detective Illingworth
35:15interviews Ryan
35:16again
35:16after looking
35:17into some
35:18of his
35:18previous claims
35:19there's two
35:20people in the
35:21house
35:21between 7 and
35:2211 on the day
35:23I wasn't there
35:25that day
35:25we know
35:27that he's not
35:28telling the truth
35:29during that
35:30interview
35:30why does nobody
35:31have a marriage
35:32certificate for you
35:33and what happened
35:34to her
35:35where is she
35:36she's
35:36vanished
35:37with my kids
35:38you have a
35:39kid too
35:40there was no
35:42record of him
35:42ever being married
35:43he said that he
35:44had a child
35:44no record at all
35:46it just wasn't
35:46true
35:47at some point
36:02he starts to
36:02maybe try to
36:03deflect towards
36:04Marty a little
36:05bit
36:05the deep-seated
36:07anger
36:07and the issues
36:08that he had
36:09with his mom
36:10and with Marty
36:12he also
36:17really ran
36:18down his mom
36:18a lot
36:19she's a terrible
36:19person
36:20lots of people
36:21don't like her
36:22again deflecting
36:23attention away
36:25from him
36:25trying to put it
36:26on an outside
36:26person
36:27Ryan was
36:29extradited
36:30back to Ohio
36:31on July 17
36:322012
36:33the trial
36:36was in
36:36February 2014
36:38and he pled
36:38not guilty
36:39Ryan has
36:40maintained
36:40his innocence
36:41regarding us
36:42and I don't
36:42believe that
36:43has changed
36:43to today
36:44in my opinion
36:46this is what
36:47happened
36:47on the morning
36:48of May 9
36:482012
36:49so
36:52Marty leaves
36:53for work
36:54Vicky's still
36:54in bed
36:54she comes down
36:56that morning
36:57and is sitting
36:58at that kitchen
36:59table
36:59Ryan comes
37:01down
37:01he sees
37:02Vicky
37:03sitting there
37:04he hits her
37:06across the head
37:07I think
37:10that she was
37:10knocked out
37:11of this chair
37:12she was probably
37:14on the ground
37:15he's throwing
37:17this blood
37:17up on the ceiling
37:18he's throwing
37:18this blood
37:19on the curtains
37:20he beats her
37:22until she stops
37:23moving
37:23dragging that body
37:26he throws her
37:27down in the cellar
37:28he spends
37:29the next couple
37:30hours before
37:31Marty gets home
37:31for lunch
37:32cleaning that area
37:34at some point
37:37Marty gets home
37:38eats a sandwich
37:39real quick
37:39talks to Ryan
37:40real quick
37:40goes out
37:41so we think
37:43shortly after
37:44Marty leaves
37:45for work
37:46is when
37:47Ryan hops
37:48in that truck
37:48and takes off
37:49part of me
37:54wanted to hate him
37:55for what he did
37:57to my mom
37:57and I remember
37:59seeing him
38:01and I kind
38:02of felt guilty
38:03that I almost
38:03had a little bit
38:04of sympathy
38:04for him
38:05the trial
38:08lasted five days
38:09the jury
38:10found him
38:11guilty
38:11of aggravated
38:13murder
38:13felony murder
38:15purposeful murder
38:16tampering with
38:17evidence
38:17and receiving
38:18stolen property
38:19I had to realize
38:22that
38:23Uncle Bubba
38:24really didn't exist
38:26and it was just
38:27Ryan the monster
38:28the defendant
38:32was sentenced
38:32to life in prison
38:33without parole
38:34after the trial
38:37there's the
38:38appellate process
38:39he actually was
38:41able to have
38:42the aggravated
38:43murder
38:44conviction
38:45overturned
38:46the court said
38:50that there was
38:51plenty of evidence
38:51that he had actually
38:52done the murder
38:53but there wasn't
38:54enough evidence
38:55of premeditation
38:56Ryan ultimately
38:59was sentenced
38:59to life in prison
39:01with the possibility
39:02of parole
39:02after 18 years
39:03the fact that he
39:06hasn't accepted
39:07responsibility
39:07for what he's done
39:08shows that he
39:10isn't reformed
39:11shows that
39:12he's not
39:13remorseful
39:14and if you can't
39:15be sorry
39:16or remorseful
39:17for killing
39:17your mom
39:18what kind of
39:20threat do you
39:20pose to society
39:21I have no
39:25emotional connection
39:26with Ryan at all
39:27other than
39:29anger
39:29and he's not
39:31my son anymore
39:32if he gets out
39:35it would be
39:36nothing for him
39:36to do the same
39:37thing again
39:37sitting here now
39:41I hate Ryan
39:43with every fiber
39:44of my being
39:45I'll never
39:47forgive Ryan
39:47for what he did
39:48isn't that cute
39:50yeah beautiful
39:51thank you for
39:53modeling for us
39:54when my grandma
39:56was still alive
39:57I was still
39:59going by
39:59Stephanie
40:00I actually
40:01came out
40:02as transgender
40:03and I wish
40:05my grandma
40:06was here
40:06to support
40:07me being
40:07trans
40:08she was always
40:10supportive
40:11always very loving
40:12I miss her
40:14a lot
40:14definitely
40:17miss her
40:18keep thinking
40:20what would it
40:21be like
40:21if she was
40:22still around
40:23the first event
40:32I had
40:33after grandma
40:33died
40:34was a dance
40:35recital
40:35and
40:38when I looked
40:39out into the
40:40audience
40:40I saw
40:41Steph
40:42I saw
40:43my dad
40:43I saw
40:44my stepmom
