00:00I just received a call a husband and wife are self-reporting that they harvested a spike elk
00:11when they were hunting cow elk so if you could kind of just start from beginning how you got to
00:17this point the officer that just checked your license told you that you couldn't fish here
00:22yeah you're sitting right there you've got a hazard right here a decline wins that could
00:29be your death right there we got people actively burning bushes out at swallow see anybody setting
00:35fire in here yeah because I'm responding to a fire that's reported in here I could swear I had a cow
00:45in my sights just tell us who set the fire man um Nevada a land of extremes from the strip to the
01:02summits it's wild country home to more than 900 species and a way of life worth protecting
01:10preserved for the people and the wildlife that call it home one team stands guard this is Nevada Wild
01:21this looks good good spot
01:44today we're gonna go underground and do an abandoned mine survey and survey for bats with me today is
01:52Michael West who is also a wildlife diversity field biologist out of our Tonopah office and also Tracy
01:58Kipke is assisting and Tracy's a habitat biologist out of the Las Vegas office this is our white nose
02:06syndrome disease sampling kit it contains sample vials these are the cotton swabs that we use to
02:14gently rub the muzzle of the bats as well as the forearms these samples will be frozen and then sent off
02:20for analysis here in just a few minutes we're gonna be on quite a bit of snow it's gonna get kind of muddy
02:25and slimy real quick but with the track club no trouble getting over everything awesome all right you
02:31guys about ready helmets coveralls sampling kit coffee coffee we're good let's find some bats and get this
02:41done the mine we're gonna go in today is an abandoned gold mine it was in operation from the late 1800s to
02:52the early 1900s abandoned mines are extremely dangerous there's hazards associated with sheer
02:58drop-offs sometimes what looks like solid ground that you're walking on might not be and you can
03:03fall through you can fall down shafts sometimes shafts have water people have drowned in them if
03:08you're not a trained professional with a mission of reason to be in that mine then you have no business
03:13being in that mine today I'm patrolling lake mead national recreation area we're doing standard boating
03:38patrol I'm gonna check fishermen I'm gonna check boats check for safety equipment and compliance for
03:43licenses and limits arena 3-4-10 hatchery we got a bunk that needs assistance over by Sand Island
03:52I'm responding to a vessel in distress right now near Sand Island deal with the high wind levels that we're
04:01having right now it's essential that we get to them fast this high wind definitely can turn on simple
04:06vessel in distress and doing emergency situations
04:18hi is it Johnny yes Johnny this is game warden Zachary Blackwood Nevada Department of Wildlife are you off to
04:25you are right yeah right to you right to your right I'm right here looking at your okay all right
04:29everything good over there yeah we're good okay all right I will head over and tell you in okay all right
04:36thank you thank you turns out just to be mechanical issues everybody's in good health I'm gonna be
04:47towing them back into Las Vegas boat harbor or Boulder Harbor grab two life jackets work them on for me
04:54we'll do a uh a long haul up to the dock okay you're welcome sir
05:08I'm gonna go take a look real quick okay fingers crossed we get some white nose samples
05:24excellent white nose syndrome is a fungal disease that affects bats it's called white nose syndrome
05:33because the fungus will attach itself to the muzzle area of the bat and gives it a fuzzy appearance thus
05:39the name white nose all right let's go get this one taken care of so bats spend the fall months leading up
05:46to hibernation eating as much as possible and they build up their fat reserves because when they go to
05:51hibernate they suppress their metabolism to the point that they're barely breathing and they go
05:55into a deep sleep and they can do this by living off of the fat reserves that they just stored so when bats
06:03become affected by the white nose syndrome by the fungus that fungus attaches to the bats and it's an irritant and
06:08it causes the bats to wake up from hibernation and when they wake up in the middle of the winter when there's no food for them
06:14their metabolism increases they start to very rapidly use that fat reserve and they will literally starve
06:21to death before springtime comes
06:23this is it there's nothing yeah although maybe let me check how it cracks me that's what crepices though
06:33this situation could have been much worse luckily the boat seems structurally okay after assessing this
06:51vessel it looks like the engine's just not working for some reason move that around that for me please
06:56thank you move it around that thank you
07:03what's up fish we have people actually burning bushes out at swallow okay i can head out okay if you can just
07:16do the initial assessment i'll i'll head him out there and we can okay okay swallow you said yeah
07:22swallow bay we got a report of some individuals setting fire to bushes out there and try to get
07:29those fires put out you can show me responding to swallow bay for the report of individuals setting
07:37fire to bushes wildfire here in nevada is huge it destroys habitat for wildlife all the time we get
07:44these huge fires up in the reno tahoe area that just wipe out forests and people that play with fire
07:50fire they're dangerous people they need to be dealt with
07:55so park rangers informing me that there's an individual who's possibly setting fires out an area called
08:09swallow bay so we're going to spawned out there and see what information we can obtain and if there are some active fires being set we're going to deal with those and try to put them out
08:19see anybody setting fire in here yeah because i'm responding to a fire that's reported in here
08:32this group of boats was reported that there are people that there are kids setting fire out here
08:38yeah well i ain't seeing any fires now
08:43who's burning stuff out here i don't know there was uh when we got here there was burning stuff going down on this area
08:51on the in on the right here on this area
08:55it smells funny when was that uh shoot it's been over an hour ago an hour ago yeah what would the boat look like
09:04um it smells funny in the water
09:08okay i just want to make sure it's out doesn't spread i mean that's
09:16it doesn't surprise me that i'm getting uh some pushback from individuals on the beach
09:23uh not everybody likes law enforcement individuals that have been drinking like to avoid us
09:29for obvious reasons but i understand why they're a little hesitant to speak to me
09:34410 3410
09:35okay
09:36there is an active burn scene that's been extinguished i don't know if you guys want to come out and look at it
09:43but there is no threat of it spreading at all
09:46yeah i'll tell you we'll see if we can locate something involved
09:50i believe the reporting party is still in the area we're going to contact them see what information
09:57we can get out of them and hopefully we can find the person uh who's responsible and deal with them
10:03hello how you doing good
10:08did you report these guys i did
10:11okay they're lighting fires yeah yeah i know they did who did you see which kids it was he's sneaky so he took a picture
10:19awesome
10:21he's got a future and something not sure what to do right
10:24it was two guys it looked like they had like a little can or something
10:28hey will you text me those yeah okay yeah they weren't happy to see me so i'm gonna wait for the park service show before we go back over there they just called okay
10:36did any of them get in the boat just to
10:44go to the left of that bush
10:50the far right boat
10:52okay
10:54well they they they they they did not want me there they're pretty intoxicated over there so
11:03it's probably not wise for me to go by myself
11:05i just i just don't the way brush fire go yeah
11:09this is on fire how stupid is that right right right all right guys thank you
11:13yeah
11:18yeah i got eyes on him i'm gonna back out from the rp
11:22and then open water
11:25after speaking to the reporting party they had some photos
11:28they said the individuals that are responsible are still on scene
11:32nps is arriving now
11:34maybe we can get somebody to uh confess to it really want to hold somebody accountable and
11:39keep them from uh really destroying out of that this lake
11:46okay this is it like this is as far back as it goes
11:53all right i think that will do it
11:59no bats today tracy it's all right so we uh get geared up and head to the next site
12:06yeah
12:07this first mine we didn't actually find any bats in the mine which isn't a problem
12:10not every mine is suitable habitat for bats which is why we survey and evaluate all of
12:16these mines because not everyone is suitable bat habitat
12:38looks like some of the upper portal has sloughed in over the winter
12:42not going in that way
12:45well last time i was here none of this material was under this wooden collar
12:50but from everything i've read about it it's about 350 feet back
12:56that's a good size
12:57yeah um but i've had no descriptions of lateral workings or anything
13:02we can get in out of that
13:04can you drop down in there yeah yeah that's no problem cool
13:09let's gear up get our packs ready i'm gonna fire up the uh
13:12gas meter this is what we carry with us at all times that continually monitors the air quality
13:19underground regarding oxygen levels hydrogen sulfide carbon monoxide lets us know if there's
13:25any concerns
13:26i'll wait until you holler at me
13:28sounds good
13:29and i can lower stuff down if you guys need me to
13:32sounds good
13:33all right i'll see you guys in 90 minutes
13:4190 minutes or less
13:43good luck i hope you find a bunch of bats
13:45me too
13:46all right michael i'm gonna slide down and then i'll let you know when i'm clear
13:50all good
13:55all right i'm gonna come on down
13:57off the bat i'm noticing there's really good night-roofed evidence yeah it's what i just saw
14:04all that yeah here's a wing right here so the the bats will hunt insects moths mostly
14:24they don't eat the wings they just eat the body they just want the the main meaty part
14:29they'll come in after they've captured a bunch and they'll pluck the wings off and then proceed
14:34to eat and then go back out for some more feeding this would be a typical place for a bat to be roosting
14:42open a little crevice and crack some things
14:45okay we've got a hazard right here
14:56the decline winds
14:58it's essentially a shaft within the mine
15:01if you're not in here with the proper lighting
15:03or if you just come around this corner clumsily
15:06that could be your death right there
15:08people that don't know what they're doing should not be in mines
15:16be careful of this don't touch this
15:19it's a stall
15:20how amazing the stuff you find in these old mines
15:23as they mined out this stove they put this in here to support the overburden
15:28and you can already see how
15:30it's eroding away
15:31it just takes somebody tapping that
15:34this could come down see how fractured it is
15:37also big hole false bottom right here
15:41in addition to all of these rotten timbers
15:45you see the boards at the top
15:47they're actually slightly buckled
15:49that's from the pressure of the overburden
15:51just takes one movement for stuff to come down
15:54we're not going any farther
15:56there's no reason for us to go farther
15:58based on this hazard i see
16:01this is where we're terminating the survey
16:03we'll quietly head back out
16:05and we're done
16:19this is where we're terminating the survey
16:21we'll quietly head back out
16:23and we're done
16:24we're done
16:25we're done
16:26we're done
16:27there we go
16:28we didn't take any samples
16:29because we didn't find any bats
16:30all right
16:31michael is going to navigate us to our next spot
16:36this is all a big mining complex
16:41it's just a matter of
16:42knowing the weather to go straight
16:43we're back
16:48to couple more switchbacks
16:49okay
16:55all right
16:56we're here
16:57found it
16:58looks like the spot
16:58this is a totally sketchy shaft
17:00it's surrounded by vegetation
17:02and if this wasn't fenced off
17:04somebody could easily just be hiking through here
17:06and fall into that
17:07national park service has arrived
17:08trying to see if we can get somebody to admit to setting the fire
17:09and we're going to get somebody to admit to setting the fire
17:10all right
17:11all right
17:13we're here
17:14found it
17:15looks like the spot
17:16this is a totally sketchy shaft
17:18it's surrounded by vegetation
17:20and if this wasn't fenced off
17:22somebody could easily just be hiking through here
17:24and fall into that
17:30national park service has arrived
17:32trying to see if we can get somebody to admit to setting the fire
17:35so national park service along with nevada department of wildlife
17:39we work together out here at lake mead
17:41and they will back me up
17:43so there's some adults in here setting fire to the bushes
17:47you can see that there was an active burn going on
17:50but it's pretty much gone out
17:52her son has some photos that he took with his phone
17:56they're not great quality
17:58but it looked like adults he said
18:00oh yeah
18:00this is the bush that they were lighting on fire
18:02so this boat right here
18:04yeah
18:05we pulled up here
18:06and the guy on this boat
18:08was mouthy from the beginning
18:10okay
18:11he might be one of them
18:12one of them that was doing it
18:13he said they were using like a blowtorch type thing
18:17yeah
18:17yeah something like that
18:19but there's also a big burn on this side
18:22so i think there's multiple burning spots
18:24well we got several things on the federal side of things
18:26that we can cite for all those things
18:27i think it's going to be hard to get anybody to admit it
18:31and they were kind of far away to really see who
18:34sure
18:35who did it
18:35but
18:36for us
18:36we got to make sure waltzer
18:38you know wildfire side of things
18:39yeah
18:39out in cold
18:40so we don't get anybody out here
18:41okay
18:42let's go take a look at it
18:43we got enough hands on now
18:44okay
18:45you can tell the enemy
18:46can you handle it
18:47okay
18:48right around the corner here
18:53first boat to the right
18:54yeah this first vessel on the right-hand side
19:03i believe the individual might be part of this
19:23you like this lake right
19:25yeah
19:25we all love this lake
19:26yeah
19:27why would we let people set fire to
19:29i don't
19:30i'm not i'm not questioning you but
19:32people love this body of water
19:34i didn't light any fire
19:35no i'm not i'm not saying you did
19:36i'm not saying you did
19:37but i know the person that did
19:39did not leave this area
19:40they are still here
19:42okay
19:43well it wasn't us
19:44give us some information
19:45who did it
19:46i'm not sure
19:47i know i know you don't want to tattle on anybody but
19:49well i mean like you know
19:50they're just they're destroying your lake
19:52yeah well i
19:53i don't know
19:54i don't agree with that at all
19:56and and that over there
19:57because i know i know that one was set
19:59when that boat was sitting right next to it
20:01well i didn't do it
20:03some of the people over there
20:04i mean i don't know exactly who did it
20:06hearing
20:07you know who did that
20:09light lit fire
20:11what about the one next to your boat
20:13the one you were on i'm saying the boat you were on
20:17there's a fire sat right next to it
20:21i don't believe there's a fire in it
20:27right there
20:28that's not near my boat my boat's right here bro
20:31i'm just asking you
20:32this boat was right here as that was actively lit
20:35i have a photograph of it
20:38yeah i think it was smoldering when we pulled up
20:40just tell us who set the fire man
20:44um
20:51tell us who set the fire i didn't say you just tell us who set the fire
20:58and uh there was a couple fires a gator
21:01couple fires here
21:03okay
21:04so is it us
21:05this is your lake man you love this lake right
21:06why would you want somebody doing that
21:08wouldn't you want that person to be held accountable
21:10for burning tumbleweeds
21:13okay you obvious you obviously don't care
21:16i don't care i mean that's here obviously not
21:19we pick up trash i got a dumpster full of trash that we picked up trash
21:24so yeah we pick up trash
21:25and you care about this though
21:27you care about somebody lighting a fire
21:29messing with the ring when we showed up
21:31so it might have been an hour ago four hours ago i don't know
21:35we went to gator there was a smoldering fire
21:38there was a fire here
21:40we didn't think it was out of control
21:42let me start
21:43i don't know
21:44what do you want me to do about it
21:46pee on it and make it go out
21:48i don't want you to do anything
21:49well seriously
21:50this is the report that we received
21:52so we're going to respond to where we were called to
21:55understood
21:56but i don't see a problem here right now
21:58we're going to put it up on the beach
21:59if there was an issue here
22:01if it was seriously out of control
22:03we pulled
22:04okay you know what we don't need to speak anymore
22:25it just really surprises me that nobody wants to give us the information we need to hold somebody accountable
22:32yeah i know
22:34see you guys
22:35later
22:36dealing with the individual that gave me a hard time when we first arrived
22:39that guy was obviously intoxicated
22:42this guy did not care one bit that there was a smoldering fire in the desert
22:49in the dry weather next to his boat
22:51that is not somebody that likes to conserve wildlife or habitat
22:55should we knock this one out
23:07nope
23:08all right let's get her done
23:09tracy for time
23:10we'll say one hour
23:11okay
23:12let me know if you need something christy
23:19all clear michael
23:25okay
23:26got
23:27got
23:28this one's a tight fit
23:30sometimes i hate being tall
23:33got a few scattered moth wings are definitely night roosting it here
23:39do you have a coffee
23:49yeah
23:50townsend's
23:51let's keep our voices down he's definitely hibernating
23:55so that's one
23:56that's one
24:01two more
24:02one two
24:07it's a great cluster right there
24:11we're gonna get into this room
24:12and there's gonna be a whole bunch of clusters just like that
24:16definitely quiet voices
24:26two
24:28one
24:32two
24:33three
24:36five
24:40nine
24:41two
24:42one
24:43three
24:44four
24:45two
24:47four
24:48four
24:49five
24:50two
24:51four
24:53five
24:55six
24:56So this species of bat is Townsend's big-eared bat.
25:02Right now, these bats are hibernating.
25:04This one has its ears rolled tightly up.
25:07That one has one ear up and one ear down.
25:10That's the way that they micromanage their thermal regulation.
25:14281. Good numbers.
25:16Yeah.
25:17Good numbers.
25:18Well, most of them are the same.
25:21All right, let's get set up for White Nose.
25:24So I'm gonna stay here and record data
25:26and I'm gonna send you out with the swabs and vials
25:28and then you come back and we'll keep doing that
25:30until we fill it up.
25:44Just roll it across the nose and roll it up and down the forearm.
25:47Okay?
25:48Yeah.
25:49Yeah.
25:54There's a swab, a little bit of preservative here.
26:02There we go.
26:04The survey that we're doing today, we're actually taking long,
26:08looks like long Q-tips and we're swabbing these bats very gently
26:12around the muzzle area and on the wings.
26:14Then we send these samples into the National Wildlife Health Lab
26:17and they'll analyze them.
26:21Today we counted 281 Townsend's big-eared bats.
26:25And if the numbers drastically decrease,
26:27that might be an indication that there's a problem.
26:29I'm very pleased with the result of today's count.
26:32It was a really good count.
26:34This is one of the handful of species that the fungus has been found on,
26:40but has not caused the bat to become symptomatic.
26:43And that's key, that's really important.
26:44Like, why do Townsends tolerate it?
26:47And it doesn't become symptomatic, but it does become symptomatic on other species.
26:51It's going to help us better understand the disease and how to control it.
26:58I think I can reach these.
27:00Yeah, I can reach these, too.
27:02I can get that one on top first.
27:06I like the ink of my hand.
27:09I'm not bouncing too bad.
27:12I just don't want to touch them too hard.
27:15I'm trying to roll that down off the nose.
27:20You're starting to be disturbed.
27:22I was kind of running out of stuff I could reach in there.
27:27So we collected ten samples today, which was a really good effort.
27:32You ready to head out?
27:34Yeah.
27:50Tracy, we're coming out.
27:52All right.
27:53That was a very successful line survey.
27:58Managed to get some white-nose syndrome samples collected.
28:03Awesome.
28:04Several hundred Townsends big-eared bats.
28:07Yeah, that was worth it.
28:09We'll get them sent off to the health lab and hopefully they come back negative.
28:13Good bat.
28:16The work that we did today is giving us really good trend information as to whether or not
28:20the numbers of bats are increasing or decreasing from year to year to try to stay ahead of white-nose.
28:25It has not been detected in Nevada yet.
28:27We're bracing for the possibility that it could happen, but the work that we're doing now will make us very prepared and very ready if that day happens.
28:34And fingers crossed it won't happen on my watch.
28:39So open right now in Nevada, in Lincoln County, is our cow elk hunts.
29:07These hunts, you can only harvest a female cow elk without antlers.
29:13I just received a call.
29:15A husband and wife are self-reporting that they harvested a spike elk when they were hunting cow elk.
29:22So I'll be headed out there to determine what's going on.
29:26What we're really looking at for is levels of negligence.
29:30What were they doing to accidentally harvest this spike elk on a cow tag?
29:35A lot of times these spikes can be pretty short.
29:37This can be a pretty serious offense depending on levels of negligence.
29:41But ultimately, that's a misdemeanor with anywhere between $100 and $500 fine.
29:55Female elk don't have antlers, and the males will have antlers.
29:58But when they're really young, those antlers can be really short.
30:02And unless you're really careful, you can make the mistake of not seeing those antlers,
30:07and you can accidentally shoot a spike when you were meaning to shoot a cow elk.
30:11How are you guys doing?
30:13All right.
30:15Had better days?
30:16Yeah.
30:17Had better days?
30:18Yeah.
30:19So if you could kind of just start from the beginning, how you got to this point.
30:34So if you could kind of just start from the beginning, how you got to this point.
30:38So we've been getting up early, like 3.30, to come down and see if they're on the field.
30:43And we've been watching these elk for like 10 days.
30:45Kind of patterning them?
30:46Yeah.
30:47There's probably at least 30.
30:49And this one here was back there probably about 40, 50 yards.
30:54Uh-huh.
30:55Was it light yet?
30:56It was probably about 6, 6.30.
30:59So just kind of getting light?
31:02Yeah.
31:03Yeah.
31:04I could swear I had a cow in my sights.
31:06And I shot once, and we tracked this one to here, and she found it.
31:11Oh, darn.
31:13I said, I'm going to report.
31:14I didn't know if I had signal here, so I said, I'm going to go down to the road.
31:17I'm going to call.
31:18It just made me sad.
31:19Yeah, no.
31:20That's not...
31:21Absolutely.
31:22No one wants this to happen.
31:24I mean, there was a bit of negligence.
31:26You know, you should have looked a little better, made sure you knew what you were shooting
31:29at, but it happens.
31:30Yeah.
31:31My job is to now determine level of negligence.
31:33So if you're shooting at 600 yards at a herd of running elk, that's different than your
31:38guys' situation.
31:39To be looking at the head, I did not see the twine.
31:43Yeah.
31:44But I also didn't see the one spike sticking up.
31:47Yeah.
31:48And this spike was probably hidden behind its face.
31:51Yeah.
31:52There was a little bit of negligence there on their part.
31:54They should have taken a little more time.
31:55But mostly, usually these guys aren't criminals.
31:58They made a mistake.
31:59And we got to look at it in that light.
32:01Well, what we do in this situation, and this is mandated by our department.
32:05If it's a self-report and a low level of negligence, then what we do is have you guys
32:10pay for the processing of that animal so we can now donate it to local charities.
32:15Because your tag is for a cow elk.
32:18I can't even give this to you and say, because you don't have a right to this animal.
32:23You've already processed it.
32:25I really appreciate that.
32:26I don't have to get bloody at all.
32:28You've already done that for me.
32:30What we care a lot about is this meat.
32:32The actual citation for taking wrong sex is between $50 and $500 based on levels of negligence.
32:38So what I'm going to do is go the absolute lowest I possibly can with a $50 negligent fee.
32:42Okay.
32:43On that citation, plus $350 for processing the animal.
32:47And then there's some court costs.
32:48So you're going to look at somewhere around a $500 ticket for this.
32:52Okay.
32:53And it's a six demerit citation.
32:55If it happens again in the next three years, if you get 12 demerits, then you could have your hunting and fishing privileges or vote.
33:02I don't think this will happen again.
33:03Oh, no.
33:04So you can keep hunting.
33:05Your tag's not done.
33:06Yeah.
33:07Oh, okay.
33:08You still have the right to your cow elk.
33:10Okay.
33:11So you're going to get this citation.
33:12You're going to help me get this back to the truck.
33:14We'll get it to the butcher.
33:15And then you guys will be able to keep hunting and finish getting your animal.
33:23So I see an individual out.
33:37He's actively fishing.
33:39Looks like he might be in a closed area.
33:4103, when you picked up 12, there was a guy standing right next to the no fishing sign.
33:46Did you guys check any of these people?
33:48It was about an hour ago.
33:50There was a guy just adjacent to it.
33:52Possibly.
33:53I'm glad I can't be that sure.
33:59Was he fishing at the time that you contacted him?
34:01A guy with white hair and a black sweatshirt?
34:03Affirmative.
34:04I don't believe I checked yet.
34:08Did we tell him to move or...?
34:14Affirmative.
34:1710-4.
34:18Chris is telling me that he's contacted this individual.
34:21He did give him a verbal warning.
34:23And he did explain to him why it's close to fishing.
34:25The individual doesn't seem to be understanding.
34:28Probably see off my shoulder, there's a guy fishing next to a sign right here that actually says no fishing.
34:33No.
34:34We'll go make contact with him.
34:36Wind's blowing kind of hard right now.
34:38So I'm actually going to dock over here at the long tram, get us out of the wind.
34:42Sir.
34:43Stay game warden.
34:44Stay game warden.
34:45I need to check your fishing license.
34:46Did you see the sign right here that says no fishing?
34:47And he told, he said, he told me that he told you to move.
35:03The officer that just checked your license told you that you couldn't fish here.
35:26Come here.
35:27Somewhere.
35:28Yes.
35:29And you're sitting right there.
35:30From here.
35:31I know.
35:32But the officer told you you couldn't fish here.
35:33And you remain.
35:34Love you, sir.
35:35You don't give me much of an option at this point.
35:50He gave you a warning to not fish here, to move.
36:03You understand a lot more than you like to lead on, OK?
36:07I understand.
36:08He had you look at the sign.
36:10Yes.
36:11He told you to move.
36:12Yes.
36:13OK?
36:14Yes.
36:15If I catch you out here doing this again, you will receive a citation.
36:17Understood?
36:18I'll do this again.
36:19See that sign right there?
36:20Yes, I see that.
36:21Yeah, literally right there.
36:22OK?
36:23That sign is in line with the tires.
36:24Yeah.
36:25Over there.
36:26That sign is in line with the tires.
36:27It has an arrow pointing.
36:28No fishing this way.
36:29OK.
36:30Which would be this area.
36:31So next time you are coming, other side like the people is fishing.
36:33The regulation reads, inside flat wake buoys.
36:36One, two, three.
36:38We are inside the flat wake buoys.
36:40OK?
36:41Yeah.
36:42That's it.
36:43OK.
36:44I'm not going to write your citation.
36:45This is your one and only warning.
36:46OK?
36:47Thank you very much.
36:48Appreciate it.
36:49Appreciate the cooperation.
36:51So the outcome of this contact is going to be there's a little bit of a language barrier.
36:56The individual stated that he didn't quite understand where the boundary of the marina
37:01was.
37:02I told him if I saw him out here again fishing in the marina that he received a citation.
37:06Just a verbal warning is going to suffice.
37:21So you're going to get this citation.
37:22You're going to help me get this back to the truck.
37:24We'll get it to the butcher.
37:25And then you guys will be able to keep hunting and finish getting your animal.
37:31I've got game bags.
37:33We'll put them in there.
37:34Oh, OK.
37:35I'm going to take a couple photographs and we'll remove the head.
37:38We have a large stable elk population in the state of Nevada.
37:42We're very proud of our elk population.
37:44People come from all over the world to hunt trophy bull elk here.
37:47It's an important resource and it's very sustainable.
37:51Our elk herds are growing every year.
37:53We have to give out cow tags to be able to knock back the population to where they're
37:58not above carrying capacity of the resources that are here.
38:02The people who don't self-report and then we find this animal out here wasted.
38:07One, it sucks because that we weren't able to donate that meat.
38:10Right.
38:11But then they're looking at really significant finds, possibility of gross misdemeanors.
38:15Oh, yeah.
38:16You know, and then I have to spend a lot of time trying to track down who did it.
38:20Oh, right.
38:21You know, and it's just, it makes it a lot harder.
38:23You brought her, somebody shot a moose and left him.
38:26I mean, it's just horrible.
38:28Yeah.
38:29They're going to pay to have the animal processed and they're going to receive a citation that
38:34would amount to about what it would be for a traffic ticket.
38:38So these individuals got ahead of it.
38:41They self-reported.
38:42I'm going to be able to donate this meat.
38:44So a bad situation got turned into a positive.
38:47All right, Paul, here's your tag back.
38:50I'm citing you for taking a spike elk with a cow elk tag.
38:54All right.
38:55I gave you the lowest possible bail that I can give you.
38:57That's $50.
38:58I just need your signature at the bottom.
39:00It's not an admission of guilt.
39:01Just a promise to take care of it.
39:03Again, I really appreciate you guys self-reporting and taking care of it the way you did.
39:08Well, at least you didn't get dirty, right?
39:10I didn't have to get dirty at all.
39:12It's awesome.
39:13I don't even have to go home and change or my wife's getting mad at me.
39:16It's a good day.
39:17Thank you so much.
39:18You're welcome.
39:19It's been very, very nice.
39:20Yep.
39:21So this is the community of Alamo and the butcher shop.
39:33It's right in behind this trailer back here.
39:36They'll process it into burger and steaks and different usable products.
39:50And then they'll call me when it's finished.
39:52I'll come down and pick it up and then we'll donate it to the local food bank.
39:57A lot of your roasts and really good steaks come out of this hind quarter.
40:02I mean, these are 50 pounds a piece probably on a small elk.
40:06This dog's always here.
40:08He's always looking for scraps.
40:09Like, I'm going to give him some.
40:11It's the hunter's responsibility when they harvest this animal to take care of this meat.
40:17Make sure none of it gets spoiled and goes to waste.
40:20So hanging it actually helps some of the tissues and stuff to break down and it'll make it more tender.
40:26In Nevada, the edible portions are all four quarters and the back straps.
40:32And that's what a lot of people in Nevada do.
40:33Some states require you to take the rib meat.
40:35Some require you to take the rib and the neck meat.
40:41Hey.
40:44My hands smell good?
40:46So this seizure tag will give the ability for the meat shop to possess this animal while they're cutting it up
40:53and then to be returned to me.
40:55We got the meat hanging.
41:05They're going to process it.
41:07Then we'll get it donated to the local community.
41:10And we'll be done.
41:13An unfortunate situation, but, you know, this is a good ending to it.
41:18It's a good ending to it.
41:19It's a good ending to it.
41:20It's a good ending to it all.
41:21It's a good ending.
41:22I'm happy to know.
41:23I'm happy to know it's a good evening.
