00:00In the early hours of September the 21st, 2016, in Dearborn, Michigan, a rage-filled father unleashed a nightmare on his unsuspecting family.
00:13He made his wife watch while he shot and killed her two teenage children. I can't imagine anything more cruel.
00:22I'm yelling to him, like, no, you know, no, my baby. I was begging him not to shoot her, because once he shot her in the back, you know, she was bleeding from her mouth, and I knew she wasn't going to make it.
00:37The killer was 49-year-old Gregory Green, and his reign of terror was far from over.
00:45He carried the two other girls out to the garage, placed them in the car, tucked them in, shut the door, and turned the car on.
00:55And they ultimately succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning.
01:00It was probably the most horrific crime that I've ever seen or dealt with during my career.
01:06But astonishingly, this wasn't the first time Gregory Green had killed his family.
01:11Back in 1991, he killed his first wife, and not only her, but also the unborn child, his child, that she was carrying.
01:21The man who killed his family twice would forever come to be known as one of the world's most evil killers.
01:41In 2017, 50-year-old Gregory Green was ordered to spend the rest of his natural life in prison
02:00for the murders of his two stepchildren, 19-year-old Chadney and 17-year-old Kara,
02:07and his two biological daughters, 5-year-old Koi and Kayleigh, who was just four.
02:15His final act of power over Faith Green, Gregory Green, allowed her to live
02:22and forced her to witness the murder of her children.
02:28And that gave him the power in his mind to manipulate her
02:32and make her live with these horrific memories for the rest of her life.
02:39I don't understand the mentality, but it seemed like torture to me.
02:43There was no trial.
02:47For the second time in his life, Gregory Green pled guilty to the murder of his family.
02:57This case is a perfect example that shows how incredibly dangerous
03:02coercively controlling people can become.
03:05Those children were totally dispensable,
03:09irrespective of whether they were stepchildren or biological children.
03:13I have got to make this woman pay.
03:16You lot can pay with your lives so that I can restore my ego.
03:21How evil is that?
03:28This killer's story begins in Michigan on October 12th, 1966.
03:35Gregory Green was born in Dearborn, on the outskirts of Detroit.
03:44In fact, he spent his entire life in Dearborn.
03:49We don't know a great deal about Green's upbringing,
03:52but we do know that it was a loving household,
03:54brought up with his mother and father and siblings,
03:57and I think he described it later in life as a comfortable upbringing.
04:00Green's second wife, Faith, remembers him talking about his childhood.
04:07He said that, like, in high school, he always had nice things.
04:10There were times, like, if he didn't want to go to school, he didn't have to.
04:13By his early 20s, Green had married his first wife, Tonya,
04:18and joined a church community on the outskirts of Detroit,
04:22led by Faith's father, Pastor Fred Harris.
04:25As a little girl, I loved going to church.
04:32My dad became a pastor when I was about 11.
04:36It was at church where Faith first met the man
04:39who would turn out to be her future husband.
04:43I was 14 years old.
04:45At that time, he was probably about 24, 25.
04:48He had no clue that I had a crush on him.
04:51I thought that he was cute, things like that.
04:54I used to just say hi to him, sometimes after church, sit next to him.
05:01He was there for a while, then he wasn't there anymore.
05:05In 1991, unbeknownst to 14-year-old Faith,
05:10Gregory Green had been sent to prison for killing his wife, Tonya.
05:14On the 14th of July, Green attacked Tonya.
05:20And at that point, she was six months pregnant with Green's child.
05:25He attacked her brutally, ferociously,
05:28stabbing her in the face, chest, neck, back,
05:31killing not only Tonya, but also the unborn child.
05:38Certainly one of the factors that triggered Green's behaviour
05:41was the fact that she was planning to divorce him.
05:44I don't think Green wanted anybody else to have Tonya.
05:48If he couldn't have her, no-one else was going to have her.
05:52Gregory Green calmly dialed 911 to report what he'd done
05:57and waited for the police to arrive and arrest him.
06:00It's really interesting when looking at the emotional state
06:07of people who kill somebody close to them,
06:10like a wife or a child.
06:13The first emotion they feel afterwards is relief.
06:17Not remorse, not shame, not guilt, not terror.
06:21Relief.
06:22So they can, in that moment, behave quite rationally,
06:29but overlay that with the fact
06:32that they have felt completely justified
06:35in killing their wife for trying to leave them.
06:40Gregory Green pled no contest
06:43to the crime of second-degree murder.
06:45He was sentenced to a minimum of 15 years
06:47and a maximum of 25 years
06:49in the Michigan Department of Corrections.
06:53While Green was serving his sentence
06:55for the murder of Tonya,
06:57the woman who was to become his second wife
07:00was going about an ordinary life.
07:02In fact, she got married and she had two children.
07:06I met Karen Chaney's dad in the 10th grade
07:09and immediately I just fell for him.
07:13And then once I graduated from high school,
07:17that's when we really started dating
07:18and then I got pregnant with my son when I was 19.
07:23He was, I shouldn't say like my little buddy,
07:25but he was like me.
07:26He was a night owl.
07:27Even when I carried him, he was up at night.
07:29That's just how I was.
07:30So he was just a quiet child
07:33and we did a lot together.
07:36He was very smart and artistic
07:37till he started drawing when he was really little.
07:41Another child followed quickly.
07:43When her son, Chadney, was almost two years old,
07:47Faith gave birth to a daughter, Kara.
07:51Kara was always the type of child
07:54where whatever the brother did,
07:56she wanted to be able to do it too.
07:57When he was learning to tie his shoes,
08:00she was like, I can do it too.
08:02She always wanted to boss him.
08:03So I always had to tell her, like,
08:05Kara, you know, stop bossing your brother around.
08:08He just wanted to play his games and things like that.
08:11But as they got older, the relationship got better.
08:22Meanwhile, Gregory Green had been serving time in prison
08:25for the murder of his first wife.
08:27Most of his adult life had been spent behind bars.
08:31But in 2005,
08:33a push to give him a second chance gained momentum.
08:37Green, as was typical of him,
08:41maintained an absolutely calm presence in prison.
08:45But he was refused parole four times
08:48because he showed no empathy
08:51and no remorse whatever
08:53for killing Tonya and his unborn child.
08:56After that first murder,
08:58Gregory Green was a walking threat
09:01to any woman that he was going to get into a relationship with,
09:06especially if that woman challenges him
09:09or attempts to leave him.
09:13Green had been in prison
09:14for a considerable period of time
09:16when Pastor Fred Harris,
09:17who was a well-known figure in Detroit,
09:20began a campaign to get him released.
09:24Harris told the parole board
09:25that Green would be supported
09:27by the local community
09:29and welcomed back into the church.
09:31What he didn't do,
09:33and that's so significant later,
09:34he didn't warn his daughter Faith
09:36exactly what Green had done
09:38and why he'd been in prison.
09:41In 2008,
09:43after 16 years behind bars,
09:46Gregory Green was granted parole
09:48at the age of 41.
09:50He had a chance to start over,
09:52but his insatiable lust for murder
09:55could not be controlled
09:57and eventually he would kill again.
10:11In 2008,
10:13Gregory Green had just been released from prison
10:16after spending 16 years behind bars
10:19for the murder of his first wife
10:21and their unborn child.
10:24When Faith,
10:25who was single again,
10:26ran into him at church,
10:28old feelings resurfaced.
10:33At first,
10:33he didn't even know who I was
10:35until I told him.
10:36Then he was like,
10:37oh, okay, you know,
10:38he didn't even have a clue
10:39that I had, like,
10:41this crush on him.
10:42And a few times,
10:43like, after church,
10:44I would talk to him
10:45and then eventually
10:46we exchanged numbers.
10:48One day,
10:49we went out to dinner,
10:50just talk.
10:52The kids seemed like they liked him
10:53and we just eventually started dating.
10:58Tragically,
10:59Faith wasn't aware
11:00of Green's crime
11:02when he was released.
11:04Her father didn't tell her
11:05and I'm absolutely sure
11:06in my own mind
11:07that Green didn't tell her either.
11:08As far as she was concerned,
11:11with the help of her father,
11:12Green was being rehabilitated.
11:15I probably should have asked more questions.
11:18I did know
11:19that he had went to prison.
11:22We were told
11:23there was some type of altercation,
11:25but it was self-defense.
11:27Any allegations made against him,
11:29he's going to deny,
11:30he's going to minimize,
11:32he's going to make it look like
11:33he was the victim.
11:34This is something
11:35that is so common.
11:36They call it DARVO.
11:38Deny,
11:39attack,
11:39reverse victim
11:40and offend.
11:41Now that is straight
11:42from the coercive control playbook.
11:46He moved in with me
11:47for a little bit,
11:49but I was just feeling like
11:50something wasn't right.
11:52I don't know
11:52if it was just too soon.
11:54I ended up breaking it off
11:55with him for a while.
11:57I didn't talk to him
11:58for a little bit
11:59and then we started talking back
12:00and then that's how
12:01I got pregnant with Coy.
12:02Like we weren't even
12:03in a relationship
12:04or anything like that.
12:07A couple months
12:08after I had Coy,
12:09that's when we
12:10ended up getting married.
12:14In 2011,
12:16Green and his new wife
12:17moved into their first house together.
12:21The city of Dearborn Heights
12:22is pretty much
12:23a bedroom community.
12:25Borders the city of Detroit
12:26on the east side of the city.
12:28Nice place to live.
12:29Pretty safe.
12:31It's a good community.
12:31Very eclectic.
12:32Very diverse.
12:34It didn't take long
12:36for Faith to realize
12:38that Green perhaps
12:39wasn't quite as angelic
12:41as she might have thought.
12:43And quite quickly,
12:45she became unsettled.
12:48I didn't really know
12:50what was going on
12:51with him on the inside.
12:53He just would shut down.
12:55That's when I started
12:56to see the attitude
12:57and things like that.
13:01Coercive control
13:02is a pattern of behavior
13:04designed to trap someone
13:07in a relationship.
13:08And that will be
13:09the motivation
13:10of the controlling person.
13:12So they will do
13:13all sorts of things
13:14within that relationship,
13:16what we call tactics,
13:17to make sure
13:18that person stays
13:20where they are,
13:21stays compliant,
13:22never leaves.
13:23everything was just
13:27coy, coy, coy.
13:28He would tell me things
13:29like,
13:30if I leave the house,
13:31I got to take her with me.
13:32He didn't really want
13:33to give me a break.
13:35There was only one time
13:37during that first year
13:39where I was able to
13:40go out with one of my friends
13:42and then he was calling me.
13:43I'm like,
13:44it only had been literally
13:45probably like an hour,
13:46hour and a half
13:47and I was getting ready
13:48to be back on my way home.
13:50Green was incredibly
13:53controlling of Faith.
13:55He tried to isolate her
13:57from forms of support
13:58and influence.
13:59He would have used
14:01psychological tactics
14:03where he would demean her
14:06and question her
14:07so that she was constantly
14:09trying to meet
14:11his expectations
14:12and his rules.
14:13He will be presenting
14:14that as very normal.
14:15That's the way of things.
14:17You've got your role.
14:19I've got mine.
14:20You get on with yours
14:21and as long as you do it properly,
14:23I'll leave you alone.
14:25Like many women
14:27in that situation,
14:29Faith stayed with Green
14:30for the sake of her daughter.
14:33Coy was funny.
14:34She thought she knew it all.
14:36She loved wearing dresses.
14:37Loved wearing dresses.
14:38That was her thing.
14:40Almost two years
14:41after Coy was born,
14:43Green and Faith
14:44had a second daughter,
14:45Kayleigh.
14:46Somehow Green
14:49didn't take
14:50to the second daughter
14:51as much as he'd taken
14:52to the first.
14:55When she came,
14:57he didn't want anything
14:58to do with her.
14:59I don't know
15:00if it was because
15:01you didn't want
15:01another child.
15:02I couldn't even take that
15:03if that's what it was,
15:05you know.
15:05I mean,
15:06I don't have to like it,
15:07but make it make sense.
15:10It got to the point
15:11where it was really tense
15:13in a house.
15:17The home
15:18was a well-kept home,
15:20nice area
15:20by all accounts,
15:22you know,
15:22just a good family
15:23living in a quiet suburb,
15:25raising their kids.
15:26So,
15:27kind of goes to the heart
15:28of what we deal with
15:30in policing every day.
15:32You never know
15:33what's going on
15:33behind closed doors.
15:36Despite Green's
15:37apparent indifference
15:38to his second daughter,
15:40Kaylee was adored
15:41by Faith.
15:43Kaylee,
15:44Kaylee was,
15:46she was a little
15:46rambunctious.
15:47She was glued to my head.
15:49She was observant.
15:51She sat back
15:52and watched.
15:53When her dad
15:54was mean to her,
15:54I used to say,
15:55let's pray.
15:57And then she would
15:58tell me,
15:58mommy,
15:58let's pray.
16:00There was a couple
16:01of times he flinched
16:02at her and she would
16:02stand up to him.
16:03No, baby,
16:04you should have to do that,
16:05you know.
16:05One night,
16:11I was sitting down
16:11on the couch
16:12and he's yelling,
16:13hollering,
16:14just saying demeaning
16:14things to me,
16:15calling me names,
16:16but he's holding coy.
16:19So,
16:20I'm like,
16:20can you please
16:21just put her down?
16:24So,
16:24finally,
16:25I got him
16:25to put her down.
16:28Then he starts yelling,
16:29he starts kicking
16:30the couch.
16:32Kaylee's on this end,
16:33and I'm like,
16:34please stop
16:34kicking the couch.
16:37That was my point there,
16:39I was just like,
16:39I have to leave.
16:42Faith attempted
16:43to get a personal
16:44protection order
16:45against her husband.
16:47I tried to go
16:48to the Dearborn Heights
16:49Police Department
16:50to file a PPO.
16:52I filled out
16:54the paperwork,
16:54they came back
16:55less than five minutes
16:56and told me
16:56it's not enough
16:58information.
17:00People don't go
17:01and get protective
17:01orders for nothing.
17:02They don't apply
17:04for them
17:04for nothing.
17:06But for some reason,
17:07probably a lack
17:08of evidence,
17:09I would have thought,
17:09that protective order
17:10was not granted.
17:13Domestic violence
17:14is one of those crimes
17:15that are unpoliceable,
17:16and that's one of the
17:17things that the police
17:18hate.
17:20We want to protect
17:20the public,
17:21we want to do
17:21what's out there,
17:22but the law,
17:23everybody thinks
17:24it's black and white,
17:25it's really not.
17:26I decided to go
17:27back to work,
17:28and I said,
17:29I'm just going
17:29to make a plan
17:31and leave
17:31on the last day
17:32of school,
17:32and that's
17:32what I did.
17:35After Faith
17:36left her husband,
17:37they lived apart
17:38for a couple
17:39of years.
17:41I did file
17:42for a divorce,
17:43and we were
17:46at one of our,
17:48I guess,
17:49divorce proceedings,
17:50and then I felt
17:53like we needed
17:53to talk.
17:54I didn't think
17:55like we were
17:55going to talk
17:56to get back together,
17:57but that's
17:58what ended
17:58up happening.
18:00So I said,
18:00well,
18:00this time,
18:01we really need
18:02to talk about
18:03things in detail,
18:04and I felt like
18:05that's what we
18:05were really doing.
18:07I felt like
18:07he was making
18:08an effort.
18:10This is a
18:11controlling
18:11and manipulative
18:12person,
18:13so they will use
18:15any tactic
18:15they think of
18:16that is going
18:17to work
18:17for them
18:18to get
18:18what they
18:19want.
18:21Faith
18:21would probably
18:22have believed
18:23him that
18:24he was genuine,
18:26that he was
18:26going to change.
18:27They never do.
18:29In 2014,
18:31Green and
18:32Faith reunited,
18:33and eventually
18:34she moved
18:34back into
18:35the family
18:36home with
18:37her four
18:37children.
18:38It would
18:39prove to be
18:39a fatal
18:40mistake.
18:42It was okay
18:43for a few
18:44months.
18:45We wanted
18:45the girls
18:46and everybody
18:46to have a
18:47good Christmas,
18:47so we got
18:48this huge
18:49Christmas tree
18:49that went up
18:50to the ceiling,
18:51bring all
18:51the toys,
18:52and everything
18:52in the house.
18:54We were
18:54talking about
18:54renewing our
18:55vows,
18:56but things
18:57were just
18:58slowly dwindling.
19:00I was just
19:00like,
19:01oh,
19:01this is not
19:02going to work.
19:04Green would
19:05never have
19:06been able
19:06to sustain
19:07this character
19:09that he was
19:09playing.
19:11Once he got
19:12what he wanted,
19:13gone,
19:13forget it.
19:14This is not
19:14who he is.
19:16Who he is
19:17is a manipulative,
19:18abusive controller.
19:20As time
19:21went on,
19:22he was
19:23getting worse.
19:24So this
19:24time,
19:25I'm dead
19:25set.
19:26I'm like,
19:26I can't
19:27change my
19:28mind.
19:28I can't
19:29continue to
19:30put my
19:30children through
19:31this.
19:32In
19:33August
19:332016,
19:35Faith filed
19:35for divorce
19:36for a second
19:37time.
19:40Statistically,
19:41the period
19:41of separation
19:42or the threat
19:43of separation
19:44in a relationship
19:45where there's
19:46intimate partner
19:46violence is
19:47the most
19:48dangerous time
19:49for a victim.
19:51And the
19:51reason for that
19:52is because it's
19:53not about
19:53violence,
19:54it's about
19:54power and
19:55control.
19:56So when
19:57the abuser
19:58in the
19:58relationship
19:59feels that
20:00they're losing
20:01that power
20:02and control,
20:03their behavior
20:05ramps up
20:06and can
20:07become much,
20:09much more
20:09violent.
20:10Next, I
20:11know,
20:11he's mad.
20:12He was just
20:13really upset,
20:14cursing,
20:14just real
20:15belligerent,
20:15and then
20:16eventually
20:16he left
20:17and went
20:17to work.
20:18And I
20:19thought I
20:19was going
20:20to be
20:20all right
20:20because the
20:21most Greg
20:22ever did
20:23was just
20:23yell,
20:24holler,
20:24maybe be
20:25in my
20:25face.
20:27I just
20:27continue to
20:28go on
20:28about my
20:28day as
20:29usual.
20:32It was
20:33at that
20:33point Gregory
20:35Green felt
20:36he ultimately
20:36lost control
20:37of the
20:38situation.
20:39And she
20:39was going
20:39to take
20:40his home,
20:40she was
20:41going to
20:41take his
20:42children,
20:43and he
20:44was not
20:45going to
20:45permit that
20:46to happen.
20:48It would
20:48be less
20:49than a
20:50month after
20:50he was
20:51served his
20:51divorce papers
20:52that Gregory
20:53Green finally
20:54snapped.
20:56What followed
20:56was a night
20:57of absolute
20:58horror that
20:59would change
21:00Faith's
21:00life forever.
21:02By September
21:132016,
21:15Faith Green
21:15had served
21:16her husband
21:17with divorce
21:17papers for
21:18the second
21:19time.
21:20Gregory
21:21Green knew
21:21his marriage
21:23was over.
21:25On the
21:2520th of
21:26September
21:262016,
21:28Green
21:28unleashed a
21:29nightmare on
21:29his unsuspecting
21:30family.
21:32It started
21:34off as a
21:34normal day.
21:36It spiraled
21:37into Faith
21:38Green and
21:39Gregory Green
21:40having an
21:41argument over
21:42text messages
21:43about the
21:45state of
21:45their marriage
21:46and the
21:47fact that
21:48she had
21:48filed for
21:48divorce.
21:50By the
21:51time Faith
21:52Green returned
21:53to the
21:54house that
21:54day, Gregory
21:56Green had
21:57become consumed
21:59by anger.
22:02I go to
22:03sleep and I
22:04remember him
22:04coming into
22:04the girls'
22:05room because
22:05I was
22:05sleeping in
22:06their room
22:06and he was
22:07like coming
22:08to the
22:08living room.
22:09It seemed
22:10serious so I
22:11got up, I
22:12go into the
22:12living room and
22:13I see my son
22:14in there and
22:14I'm thinking
22:15in my head
22:15like he woke
22:16my son up so
22:17I can tell
22:17he was
22:18asleep.
22:20Greg takes
22:20out these
22:21big zip
22:22ties.
22:24I've never
22:24seen zip
22:26ties that
22:26big in my
22:27life ever.
22:28I didn't even
22:28know they
22:29made them
22:29that big.
22:30So he's
22:30like I want
22:31you to tie
22:31your mother
22:32up with
22:32this so
22:33Chad is
22:33like Greg
22:34wait.
22:35Then he
22:35pulls the
22:36gun out.
22:38So I was
22:39like Chad
22:40just do
22:42what he
22:42says.
22:43So he
22:44made my
22:44son zip
22:44tie me and
22:45then that's
22:46when he
22:46proceeded to
22:47zip tie
22:47my son.
22:50I was
22:51froze.
22:52I couldn't
22:52do anything.
22:53care came
22:56to the
22:57living room
22:57looking like
22:58he's tripping
22:59like what
22:59is wrong
22:59with him
23:00like you
23:00know he
23:01lost his
23:01mind.
23:02She has
23:03no clue
23:04what just
23:05happened.
23:06But he
23:06ends up
23:07zip tying
23:08her and
23:08then he
23:09says he
23:10wants us
23:10to go to
23:11the basement.
23:13We just
23:14look at
23:14each other.
23:15The thoughts
23:16were so
23:17loud like
23:17go to
23:18the basement.
23:20We just
23:20look at
23:21each other
23:21and then
23:22we go
23:23down to
23:23the basement
23:24and then
23:24he made
23:24us lay
23:25down on
23:26the floor
23:26duct tape
23:28our mouths
23:29duct tape
23:31around our
23:32arms behind
23:33our back
23:34ankles and
23:35then he
23:36like extra
23:37duct taped
23:37me a lot.
23:40I was
23:41thinking that
23:41he was just
23:42going to take
23:43the girls and
23:43leave.
23:44That's what I
23:44was thinking.
23:45I never
23:45thought he
23:46was going
23:47to do
23:47anything more
23:47than that.
23:48I thought
23:48he was
23:48really just
23:49trying to
23:51really scare
23:52me.
23:54Gregory
23:54Green had
23:55a mindset
23:56where above
23:58everything else
23:59he was
24:00entitled to
24:02things.
24:03He was
24:03superior.
24:05He was
24:06better.
24:07And if you
24:07didn't give
24:08him what he
24:09was entitled
24:10to he would
24:11respond really
24:13really badly
24:14almost like
24:15a petulant
24:16toddler.
24:17But a
24:18petulant
24:18toddler is
24:19nowhere near
24:20as dangerous
24:21as a fully
24:22grown violent
24:23man with
24:24access to
24:25weapons.
24:27He sits
24:28down on
24:28the counter
24:29in the
24:30basement and
24:31he says that
24:32I'm going to
24:33suffer for what
24:33I did to him
24:34and his
24:34girls and
24:35he doesn't
24:35want his
24:36girls raised
24:37by anybody
24:37in my
24:37family.
24:39I just
24:40felt so
24:40bad because
24:41I couldn't
24:42help us.
24:43What was I
24:43going to do?
24:44Green spent
24:45the next hour
24:46going in and
24:47out of the
24:48basement.
24:48when he
24:49returned for
24:50the final
24:50time he
24:51turned his
24:52gun on
24:5317-year-old
24:54Kara.
24:55He shot
24:56her in
24:57the back
24:57twice and
25:01she just
25:01looked at
25:02me.
25:04I'm yelling
25:05to him like
25:06no, no,
25:07no, my
25:07baby.
25:09I was
25:09begging him
25:10not to
25:10shoot her
25:11because once
25:12he shot her
25:12in the back
25:13she was
25:14bleeding from
25:15her mouth and
25:16I knew she
25:17wasn't going
25:17to make it.
25:20He next
25:21turned the
25:22gun on
25:22Chadney.
25:24He shot
25:25Chadney twice
25:26in the back
25:26and once
25:27in the head.
25:31I remember
25:32him saying
25:32ouch and
25:32he rolled
25:33over and
25:35he never
25:35moved again.
25:38Then he
25:38aimed a gun
25:39at me and
25:39I remember
25:40just trying
25:40to brace
25:41myself because
25:42I didn't
25:42know where
25:43he was
25:43going to
25:43shoot me.
25:44I just
25:44remember
25:44hearing gun
25:45shots.
25:46I remember
25:47that burning
25:48feeling and
25:49then he
25:50grabbed my
25:51face.
25:53So I
25:54remember that
25:54and then him
25:55cutting me
25:56from the side.
25:59I didn't feel
26:00it but I could
26:00just feel the
26:01warmth of the
26:01blood and I
26:02see blood
26:02squirting.
26:06He spared
26:07Faith's life
26:08because he
26:09wanted her to
26:10suffer and
26:11live through
26:11it and live
26:12with it.
26:14It is an
26:14unimaginable
26:15burden for
26:17anyone to
26:17bear.
26:18Can you
26:18imagine any
26:19mother watching
26:20the death of
26:21her children
26:21in front of
26:23her by a
26:24man she's
26:24married and
26:25thought she
26:25could trust?
26:29It's
26:30fascinating from
26:31a law
26:32enforcement
26:33psychological
26:34standpoint to
26:36try to
26:36understand what
26:37Mr. Green
26:38actually was
26:39thinking that
26:40caused him to
26:41go to those
26:42lengths.
26:43What was it
26:43that you
26:44thought by
26:45sitting your
26:46wife down
26:47killing her
26:49children in
26:49front of her
26:50you were going
26:51to accomplish?
26:53That was the
26:54question that
26:54reigned in my
26:55mind for a
26:55long time
26:56after.
26:58In an
26:59eerie echo
27:00of the night
27:0125 years
27:02earlier when
27:03he'd murdered
27:03his first
27:04wife, Green
27:05then called
27:06the police and
27:07confessed to
27:08his crime.
27:10I heard him
27:11walk up the
27:11stairs and
27:12said,
27:13hi, my
27:13name is
27:13Gregory Green
27:14and that's
27:15all that I
27:16could hear.
27:17Then I heard
27:17the door
27:17close.
27:22I was
27:23called
27:23woken up
27:24by the
27:25sergeant
27:25that was
27:26working
27:26on the
27:28road patrol
27:29and was
27:29apprised of
27:30the situation
27:30at that
27:31time.
27:33You
27:34almost want
27:35to think
27:35that this
27:36isn't real.
27:37Am I
27:37dreaming?
27:37The
27:39officers
27:39responded to
27:40the scene
27:40from the
27:41911 call.
27:43Mr. Green
27:44was sitting
27:44on the
27:44porch.
27:45He was
27:46taken into
27:46custody
27:47without
27:47incident
27:47by the
27:49first
27:49responding
27:50officers
27:50and that's
27:51when the
27:52officers then
27:52had the
27:53horrific task
27:54of going
27:55into the
27:55home and
27:56finding the
27:56crime scene.
27:57I remember
27:59just laying
27:59in there
28:00then there
28:01was a
28:01knock at
28:02the door
28:02and it
28:02was the
28:03police.
28:06Faye's
28:06children were
28:07shot to
28:07death in
28:08front of
28:08her.
28:10She had
28:10suffered a
28:11cutting wound
28:12from like
28:13the top of
28:14her forehead
28:15area all
28:16the way down
28:17to her
28:18cheek and
28:20she was also
28:20shot in the
28:21foot.
28:22I don't
28:24understand the
28:24mentality but
28:26it seemed like
28:27torture to
28:27me.
28:29Obviously our
28:29primary concern
28:30in that
28:31situation being
28:32there was no
28:32further danger
28:34to the
28:34community.
28:35We still
28:36have a
28:37victim that's
28:37alive making
28:38sure that
28:39Faye was
28:39taken care of
28:40and sought
28:41medical aid
28:42that was
28:42needed.
28:44On this
28:45side here
28:46they had to
28:47stitch on the
28:47inside first
28:48and then
28:49stitch the
28:50outside and
28:51if he
28:51would have
28:52cut me an
28:52inch further
28:53I would
28:53have
28:53actually
28:54bled to
28:54death.
28:56They said
28:56that my
28:56foot should
28:57have been
28:57shattered
28:57like a lot
28:59of pieces
28:59but luckily
29:00the bullet
29:00curved and
29:01went out
29:01the bottom.
29:03Faye had
29:04survived her
29:05husband's
29:06attack but
29:08her nightmare
29:09wasn't over.
29:11Even more
29:12horrifying news
29:13was still to
29:15come.
29:21on September
29:2521st, 2016
29:27Gregory Green
29:29had forced
29:29his wife to
29:30watch as
29:31he shot and
29:32killed her
29:33two teenage
29:34children.
29:35But as
29:36Faye was
29:36about to
29:37find out
29:37they weren't
29:38the only
29:39murders he'd
29:40committed
29:41that night.
29:43What became
29:44apparent was
29:45what Green
29:46was doing
29:46when he left
29:47his wife and
29:48two elder
29:49children tied
29:50up in the
29:50basement.
29:53He had
29:54already
29:55prepared the
29:57car in the
29:58garage of
29:58the home
29:59meaning he
30:01had fastened
30:02a piece of
30:03PVC pipe on
30:04the tailpipe
30:05of the vehicle
30:06ran a hose
30:07into the
30:08window of
30:08the car.
30:10He went
30:10into the
30:10house,
30:11lifted the
30:12two girls
30:12one by one
30:13out of their
30:14beds, they
30:14were asleep.
30:16One of the
30:17children briefly
30:17woke up but
30:18her daddy
30:20was holding
30:21her so she
30:21fell back
30:22asleep.
30:23He carried
30:23the two
30:24girls out
30:24to the
30:25car, placed
30:26them in
30:27the car,
30:27tucked them
30:28in, shut
30:29the door and
30:29turned the
30:30car on.
30:35This was
30:36just
30:37incomprehensible
30:38to me.
30:39during this
30:44whole process
30:45Gregory
30:46Green would
30:47leave Koi
30:48and Kaylee
30:48in the
30:49car and
30:50then he
30:50would go
30:51into the
30:51basement to
30:52check on
30:52Kara and
30:53Chadney and
30:54Faith to
30:55make sure
30:56they were
30:56still down
30:57there.
30:57He didn't
30:58tell them
30:58at that
30:58time what
30:59was happening
31:00upstairs.
31:01After a
31:02period of
31:02time, Gregory
31:03Green went
31:04back out to
31:04the garage.
31:05He checked
31:05on the two
31:06youngest girls.
31:07They appeared
31:08to be
31:08lifeless.
31:09He turned
31:10the car
31:10off and
31:12then he
31:12carried them
31:13one by
31:13one back
31:14into the
31:14house and
31:15tucked them
31:16in bed
31:16together.
31:17Soon after
31:18being rushed
31:19to hospital,
31:21Faith learned
31:21the true
31:22extent of
31:22what her
31:23husband had
31:23done to
31:24Koi and
31:25Kaylee.
31:26One of the
31:27doctors told
31:28me that they
31:29had passed
31:29but I remember
31:30the police
31:31saying that
31:32the little
31:32one is
31:33fighting.
31:34I didn't
31:34know what
31:35was going
31:35on but
31:36Kaylee was
31:37the last
31:37to go.
31:39So they
31:40willed me
31:41to one
31:42room and
31:43I saw
31:43Koi.
31:44She was
31:45gone.
31:45She was
31:45just so
31:46cold.
31:48And then
31:48they willed
31:48me to
31:49another
31:49room and
31:50Kaylee,
31:50she was
31:51still warm.
31:57There was
31:57a lot of
31:58the officers
31:58on scene
31:59that were
32:00just not
32:00believing
32:01this.
32:01You know,
32:02you can't
32:02believe that
32:02this happened
32:03but you
32:03put your
32:04feelings aside
32:05and you
32:06have a
32:06job to
32:06do and
32:07the crime
32:07scene to
32:07process and
32:08investigation to
32:09conduct and
32:10you move
32:10forward.
32:14Now in
32:15custody,
32:16Gregory Green
32:17was questioned
32:17by police.
32:19During the
32:20course of his
32:21several hour
32:22statement, he
32:23spoke about the
32:25details of the
32:26crime and his
32:29reasons for
32:30doing this.
32:31he repeatedly
32:32referenced the
32:33fact that
32:33Faith Green
32:34had filed for
32:34divorce.
32:36He repeatedly
32:36referenced the
32:37fact that she
32:38was going to
32:38take his
32:39house and he
32:40was going to
32:40have to pay
32:41child support
32:42and he would
32:43have nothing
32:43and he would
32:44starve and he
32:45wouldn't have
32:46his girls.
32:47He repeatedly
32:49indicated during
32:50the course of his
32:51statement that he
32:52had no choice.
32:53He had to do
32:54this.
32:56The lack of
32:57emotion, the
32:58lack of
32:59conscience, the
33:01matter-of-factness
33:02in which Gregory
33:03Green detailed to
33:05the detectives what
33:06he had done to
33:07these children.
33:09What I found most
33:11troublesome about
33:12Mr. Green was
33:14there was a
33:15statement that
33:15alluded to the
33:16fact that he
33:17felt his
33:18children were
33:19better off in
33:20heaven with
33:21God than being
33:23raised by her.
33:24That was his
33:25logic behind
33:27taking the
33:28lives of his
33:28children.
33:30In this
33:31incident, Gregory
33:32Green had every
33:33opportunity to
33:34also murder
33:35Faith Green and
33:36he intentionally
33:37did not do
33:38that.
33:39The detectives
33:40asked him,
33:41why didn't you
33:42kill her?
33:43And his
33:44words were,
33:45death would
33:46have been too
33:46good for her.
33:48I wanted her
33:49to live with
33:49what she made
33:50me do.
33:50It's the
33:53ultimate act of
33:54power and
33:55control.
33:56Gregory Green
33:57knew at the
33:57time he did
33:58these things he
33:59was going to
34:00spend the rest of
34:00his life in
34:01prison and he
34:01was resigned to
34:02that fact.
34:03But he wanted
34:04Faith Green to
34:06suffer forever.
34:08And allowing her
34:09to live was his
34:10way of guaranteeing
34:12in his mind that
34:13he could control
34:13her and make her
34:14suffer forever.
34:15That's the
34:18sonification of
34:19evil and shows
34:22us exactly what
34:24his motivations
34:25were.
34:26His motivation
34:27was to punish
34:28Faith for having
34:29the audacity to
34:32leave him.
34:36In the days
34:37following the
34:38murders, the
34:39story hit the
34:40press.
34:41It was only then
34:42that Faith learned
34:43the awful truth
34:44about her
34:45husband's first
34:46wife.
34:47I was on my
34:48dad's phone and
34:49that was like the
34:50first thing that
34:50popped up.
34:52She was about
34:53six, seven months
34:54pregnant and he
34:55stabbed her to
34:56death.
35:00And I was just
35:01thinking like, oh
35:02my God, I'm just
35:03crying like, because
35:04I never knew, I'm
35:06just bawling my
35:07eyes out.
35:08I'm just sick to
35:08my stomach.
35:10Faith found it
35:11hard to come to
35:12terms with the
35:13parole board's
35:14previous decision
35:15to release
35:16Green.
35:17He actually
35:18shouldn't have
35:19ever been let
35:20out.
35:20He was never
35:21rehabilitated.
35:22He just told them
35:23what they wanted to
35:25hear because he
35:25has a demeanor
35:26where people like
35:27him, they
35:28gravitate toward
35:29him, and he
35:30used that to his
35:31advantage.
35:33Faith's whole
35:34life had been
35:35destroyed in one
35:36night by the
35:37husband who
35:38claimed to love
35:39her.
35:40But there was
35:40still one piece
35:41of news she
35:42was yet to
35:43hear that
35:44would once
35:45again rock
35:46her to the
35:47core.
35:48One of the
35:49terrible ironies
35:50of this case
35:51is that Faith
35:52was in hospital
35:53recovering from
35:55the torture
35:55from Green
35:56when she heard
35:57it was her
35:58own father
35:58who'd helped
35:59him get out
36:00of jail.
36:01Imagine the
36:02shock that
36:03must have
36:03been to the
36:04young woman.
36:05I found
36:06out just
36:06like everyone
36:08else did
36:08that.
36:09My father
36:09had wrote
36:10letters for
36:12my ex-husband
36:13to help
36:14him get
36:15out of
36:15prison.
36:16For a long
36:17time I
36:18didn't want
36:18anything to
36:18do with
36:19my father.
36:21I probably
36:21pushed my
36:22family away
36:23at some
36:23point too
36:24and vice
36:24versa because
36:25they weren't
36:26understanding
36:26what I was
36:27going through.
36:28I mean, I
36:28didn't understand
36:29what I was
36:29going through.
36:30How do you
36:31really put
36:32your head
36:32around losing
36:33four children?
36:35I was on a
36:36lot of
36:36medication.
36:36I was
36:37spiraling out
36:37of control,
36:38you know.
36:44Gregory
36:45Green was
36:46charged with
36:46a litany
36:47of felonies
36:48for the
36:49Dearborn
36:49Heights
36:49massacre,
36:50including
36:51four counts
36:52of first
36:53degree murder.
36:57It was a
36:58very strong
36:58case because
37:00it almost
37:01came down
37:02to a point
37:02where once
37:04we did
37:04our protocol
37:05and procedures
37:06with Mr.
37:07Green confessing
37:08to committing
37:09the homicides,
37:10having the
37:11victims,
37:11having a live
37:12witness that
37:12witnessed
37:13everything,
37:15there's really
37:15not much
37:16to argue.
37:20What the
37:21investigation
37:21showed was
37:22that approximately
37:23a week prior
37:24to the murders,
37:25he had gone
37:26to a local
37:26hardware store
37:27here in
37:28Michigan.
37:28He had
37:29purchased
37:30the PVC
37:31pipe that
37:32he used
37:32on the
37:33car,
37:34the plastic
37:34tubing he
37:35used on
37:35the car,
37:36the zip
37:36ties,
37:38and duct
37:38tape.
37:41During his
37:41interrogation,
37:42Gregory Green
37:43admitted that
37:44he knew he
37:44was going
37:45to do
37:45something.
37:46He just
37:47didn't know
37:47when he
37:48was going
37:48to do
37:48it.
37:49I think
37:52it would
37:52be a
37:53difficult
37:53argument
37:53for any
37:54defense
37:54attorney
37:55to make,
37:56regardless
37:56of whether
37:57he had
37:57bought it
37:57days earlier.
37:58The mere
37:59fact that
37:59his children
38:00died from
38:00carbon monoxide
38:01poisoning
38:02shows
38:03premeditation.
38:06Ultimately,
38:07a plea
38:07offer was
38:08extended by
38:10the prosecutor's
38:11office to
38:12Gregory Green,
38:13whereby he
38:14would plead
38:14guilty to
38:15four counts
38:16of second-degree
38:17murder,
38:18one count
38:18of torture,
38:19one count
38:20of assault
38:21with intent
38:21to do
38:22great bodily
38:22harm,
38:23and one
38:24count of
38:24felony
38:24firearm.
38:26The plea
38:27offer in
38:27this case
38:28took into
38:28account the
38:30objectives
38:30of Faith
38:32Green,
38:33primarily
38:33that Gregory
38:35Green spend
38:36the rest
38:36of his
38:36natural life
38:37in prison.
38:38This plea
38:39offer also
38:40took into
38:41account the
38:43trauma that
38:44a trial
38:44would cause
38:45to Faith
38:46Green in
38:47having to
38:47relive
38:48and testify
38:49about
38:50witnessing
38:51the murders
38:51of her
38:52children.
38:54On March
38:55the 1st,
38:562017,
38:57approximately
38:58six months
38:59after he'd
39:00murdered his
39:01two daughters
39:01and his
39:02two stepchildren,
39:04Gregory Green
39:04was back in
39:05court for
39:06his sentencing
39:07hearing.
39:08To her
39:12immense credit,
39:14Faith turned
39:15up at
39:16Green's
39:17sentencing
39:17and indeed
39:19called him
39:21out in
39:21front of
39:22the jury
39:22and the
39:23judge.
39:24She said,
39:25you're a
39:25conman,
39:26you're a
39:26monster,
39:27and you're
39:28the devil
39:28in disguise.
39:29She was
39:32very brave
39:33and very
39:34strong,
39:35and she
39:36was there
39:37speaking for
39:38her children.
39:40I wanted
39:40to be
39:41face-to-face
39:42with him
39:42if it
39:43were my
39:43choice.
39:44That's why
39:45I kept
39:46looking at
39:46him,
39:46even though
39:47it was
39:47the back
39:47of his
39:48head,
39:48because to
39:49let him
39:49know how
39:50I felt
39:51so he
39:51could see
39:52my eyes,
39:53feel my
39:53pain.
39:53I don't
39:56recall Mr.
39:57Green ever
39:58looking at
39:58Faith Green
39:59and making
39:59eye contact
40:00with her.
40:01I recall
40:02him sitting
40:02and just
40:03looking
40:03straight forward
40:04as she
40:04delivered her
40:05remarks,
40:06with no
40:07emotion on
40:07his face.
40:10Mr.
40:10Green was
40:10ready to go
40:11back to
40:11prison.
40:12He was
40:12like,
40:13I did
40:13it.
40:14I turned
40:14myself in,
40:15can we
40:15just go
40:16now?
40:17He felt
40:18he was
40:18mission
40:19accomplished.
40:20It was
40:20like I
40:20killed my
40:21kids,
40:21I did
40:22what I
40:22did,
40:22put me
40:22in jail.
40:23Just
40:23unfathomable.
40:26There was
40:27no remorse,
40:28no shame,
40:28no guilt,
40:29and he
40:30kept talking
40:31about how
40:31God would
40:31look after
40:32him.
40:32So he
40:33still got
40:33that massive
40:34ego there
40:36that I'm
40:37special and
40:38I will be
40:39forgiven and
40:39God is
40:40going to
40:41look after
40:41me.
40:41I mean,
40:42the extent
40:42of that
40:43man's ego
40:44is absolutely
40:45staggering.
40:47For Faith,
40:48I don't know
40:49how she
40:50sat through
40:51those court
40:51hearings,
40:52looking at
40:53that person
40:54that just
40:54took her
40:55children.
40:57I was
40:58awed by
40:59her ability
41:00to stand
41:01up and
41:02face her
41:03abuser,
41:04face the
41:04man who
41:05had done
41:05this to
41:06her,
41:06and never
41:07once
41:07waver.
41:08From the
41:09moment I
41:10met her,
41:10I knew
41:11she was
41:11a very
41:12strong
41:12woman.
41:13She was
41:14committed
41:15to finding
41:17justice for
41:17her children
41:18from day
41:19one.
41:19I just
41:22had to
41:22let him
41:23know,
41:24I wasn't
41:24scared of
41:25you,
41:25and you
41:26did these
41:27things to
41:27hurt me,
41:29because I
41:29wouldn't stay
41:30in your box,
41:31because you
41:32wanted to
41:33control me,
41:34and I
41:34wouldn't give
41:35in to him.
41:37And I'm
41:37still not
41:38giving in to
41:38him, even
41:39though my
41:39children aren't
41:39here, but I
41:40still continue
41:41to fight for
41:42them.
41:42Gregory
41:48Green was
41:48sentenced to
41:49serve 45
41:50to 100
41:51years in
41:52prison, plus
41:53an additional
41:54two-year term
41:55for the
41:56firearms
41:56charge.
41:59I think it
41:59was a judge
42:00who said,
42:01a father is
42:01there to
42:02protect his
42:02children, and
42:03a husband is
42:04there to
42:04protect his
42:05wife.
42:06Green did
42:06neither.
42:08He was 50
42:09years old at
42:10the time, so
42:11when we did
42:12the math, I
42:13as a
42:13prosecutor
42:14understood he
42:15would not be
42:16eligible for
42:17parole until
42:18he was 97
42:19years old, and
42:20that would be
42:21the first time

42:41effect on
42:42her will
42:43never go
42:43away.
