Trevor McCarthy retired from his career as a jockey this spring, after struggling with his weight and mental health issues. He is now a Jockey Wellness Consultant for HISA, and he joined the Writers' Room hosts to discuss what that role entails. Gainesway Farm, the home of top sire McKinzie, among others, is the sponsor of the segment.
00:00Welcome in now to Gainesway Guest of the Weekend's retired jockey Trevor McCarthy, who was in the news the other day when Heise announced that he has become their jockey wellness consultant.
00:11What I've been working on is building resources for jockeys to have that improves wellness for them.
00:17So, so far we have built the on-rise or we have teamed up with on-rise program through the therapy and psychiatrist program that we have with them.
00:25Um, and we have tied in a nutritionist just recently, a couple of weeks ago to help with the jockeys as well.
00:32Trevor McCarthy, our guest of the week brought to you as always by Gainesway, the home of a new stallion in 2026.
00:38And that would be locked.
00:41Locked checks a lot of boxes as they like to say in the sport.
00:44First of all, he's a son of gun runner.
00:45He's a multiple grade one winner.
00:47He began his career at Saratoga career debut, ran a 96 buyer's speed figure, the fastest two-year-old maiden winner.
00:55Here at Saratoga, in 10 years, he won graded stakes races at two, three, and four.
01:01The Breeders Futurity at two, grade one.
01:03Cigar Mile at three, grade two.
01:06And then the San Anita Handicap, he romped earlier this year.
01:09And of course, that's a grade one.
01:11So Locked retires with earnings of over $1.9 million.
01:14One winner placed in 10 of 11 starts.
01:16And he stands at Gainesway Farm for an initial fee of $35,000.
01:21Gainesway, power, passion, performance.
01:25McKinsey in a dominant performance.
01:36Million two, million two, right there, a million, two hundred thousand.
01:39Baeza gets his moment in the sun in the Pennsylvania Derby.
01:42Chancer, McPatrick wins the champagne impressively.
01:47Spectacular display from Scottish Lassie, who's in front by 15 legs.
