00:00Spin the message.
00:01Hal shouldn't hint at fiscal restraint and go all in for big ticket stars.
00:06Translation, spin the bag, run up the check, mess up some commas.
00:10But guess what?
00:11Unfortunately, Hal Steinbrenner doesn't think so.
00:14Yeah, look, if there's a correlation between spending the most money and winning a championship,
00:18I still think it's a weak correlation.
00:19You know, sample size of data, not very big.
00:22You know, there was nothing low about my payroll and the Mets payroll,
00:25and, you know, look where we ended up.
00:27Is it likely you won't go down?
00:28You'll probably stay the same or go up then?
00:31I think, you know, would it be ideal if I went down?
00:34Of course.
00:35But does that mean that's going to happen?
00:36Of course not.
00:37Again, we want to field a team we know can win a championship
00:40or we believe can win a championship.
00:41We don't know anything in that regards as far as the future.
00:45But, yeah, so it just hasn't changed, John,
00:48which is why, you know, payrolls have gone up probably every year.
00:52It doesn't mean they won't go slightly down one year and then up the year after that.
00:55I mean, it all depends on what's out there and what the possibilities are.
00:59Man, forget the data and the sample size.
01:02Is it still World Series or bust in the Bronx or not if he's not committing to running up the checkbook this offseason again?
01:09You guys get on Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone all the time,
01:12but how are they supposed to do their jobs to the Yankees' standard if ownership is trying to pinch pennies like the movie Moneyball?
01:19The biggest spending team in baseball just won back-to-back World Series and they beat you guys in one of them.
01:26Yeah, Steve Cohen took a swing at it and the Mets didn't make it to the postseason with their payroll,
01:31but at least his fan base knows that Uncle Stevie is willing to go all the way in to try and bring a chip to flushing.
01:38But here's the difference, and there's no disrespect to the Mets.
01:41Ain't nobody looking at them.
01:43They'll respect them globally like that team up in the Bronx.
01:47You guys got to go read this article.
01:49No one's trying to hear about a $100 million stadium payment that you got to pay the city every February 1st
01:55and all those other expenses.
01:57I don't complain about beer prices, so don't cry about the labor pain.
02:01Just show me the baby.
02:03You got to pay the cost to be the boss.
