Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin address the burning questions and backlashes to the blockbuster Netflix series that has everyone talking.
Transcript
00:00I've learned from them, but Carole Baskin keeps saying, I can't have these tigers.
00:04If he ever had an enemy in his life, it was Carole Baskin.
00:08Hey, all you cool cats and kittens, it's Carole at Big Cat Rescue.
00:11The Netflix docu-series, Tiger King, Murder, Mayhem, and Madness has taken over the internet
00:15with memes and viewers sharing their takes on the wild tale.
00:18The Hollywood Reporter spoke to directors Eric Good and Rebecca Chaiklin about the burning
00:22questions surrounding the series that has everyone talking.
00:25First, has the Tiger King himself, Joe Exotic, watched the show?
00:28Since he's currently serving 22 years in prison for ordering a hit on his nemesis,
00:33Florida Tiger Sanctuary owner, Carole Baskin, the directors say no, he hasn't.
00:38But according to Chaiklin, if the docu-series were made into a scripted movie or TV show,
00:42Joe would like Brad Pitt or David Spade to play him.
00:46She added, he doesn't refer to David Spade as David Spade, he refers to him as Joe Dirt.
00:50The directors also revealed that while it was hard to get some characters featured in the
00:54doc to open up, that wasn't true for either Joe or Carole.
00:57Good, who has a background in reptile conservation, said,
01:00Joe and Carole were easy access.
01:02Joe wanted any attention, all attention.
01:04He was an open book.
01:05And Carole obviously wanted to get her message out.
01:07She's a plain-out hypocrite.
01:09She literally does everything that I do.
01:11As for Carole Baskin, she claims the directors pitched the documentary to her as a black fish
01:16for the tiger world.
01:17But according to Chaiklin, I don't think we said it, I think she said it.
01:21And to be quite honest, our initial intention was to tell a story with these colorful characters
01:25that focused on the issues that we both cared a lot about.
01:28In a million years, who would have thought that the feud between Joe and Carole would
01:32escalate to the place that it did and take all these crazy twists and turns?
01:36This is my way of living, and nobody's gonna tell me any otherwise.
01:40Chaiklin also clarified that Carole is doing a lot of good work in terms of raising public
01:44awareness around how petting tiger cubs contributes to a sort of puppy mill of tigers.
01:48But the directors say they hope viewers walk away from the show with an understanding that
01:52big cats don't belong in captivity, and they belong in the wild.
01:55And if people want to protect them, they should focus their resources on protecting them in the
01:59wild.
