Martin Scorsese is praising Netflix for backing his latest film,
00:12
The Irishman, calling it a costly experiment.
00:14
The film, which spans decades, uses de-aging visual effects
00:17
and makeup to make stars Robert De Niro and Al Pacino,

The highly anticipated three-and-a-half-hour organized crime epic
00:30
finally made its debut at the New York Film Festival on Friday,
00:33
followed by a press conference with Scorsese and stars De Niro,
00:36
Pacino and Joe Pesci, along with producers.
00:38
During the conference, Scorsese credited Netflix for finally

00:46
The director said of the streaming giant,
00:48
We couldn't get the backing that was key for years.
00:51
Ultimately, it was Ted Sarandos.
00:52
Lucasfilm's Industrial Light & Magic had come up with a solution
00:55
for the de-aging process that wouldn't interfere with Bob and Al

talking to each other with helmets or tennis balls.
01:01
It's a costly experiment.
01:02
Ted and everyone at Netflix said they'd go with it,
01:04
backed the film, financed it, and were creatively attuned to us.
