Transcript
00:00It looks like Apple is teaming up with Paramount for Martin Scorsese's high-priced period thriller
00:04Killers of the Flower Moon.
00:06The period crime drama, which has Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro attached to Star,
00:11also comes with a hefty price.
00:13With Apple and final talks with Paramount to partner and produce,
00:15the project carries a price tag of more than $150 million.
00:20This comes after months of the project's backers looking for a way to mitigate the cost of the
00:23feature, which kept escalating.
00:25Based on David Grant's book of the same name, Killers of the Flower Moon follows a
00:29chilling FBI investigation in 1920s Oklahoma when the Osage Nation discovered oil under their land
00:35and the Native Americans found themselves being murdered one by one.
00:38Now, high cost for the project has been nothing new.
00:41Imperative Entertainment picked up the movie rights to the book in 2016 for $5 million.
00:46But when Scorsese and DiCaprio stepped in in 2018, the cost was inevitably going to be higher,
00:51which somewhat makes sense.
00:53DiCaprio would likely earn around a $20 million payday for the project,
00:56and Scorsese also earns in that range.
00:59And according to sources, De Niro would receive a payday in the $15 million range.
01:03Now, the involvement of these three alone puts the above-the-line budget at $55 million.
01:09When Paramount picked up the project in June of 2019, sources say the studio was intent on making
01:14it with a price tag in the $150 million range.
01:17But then the budget ballooned to $225 million.
01:20According to sources, Netflix was prepared to take it on for $215 million,
01:25with MGM also considering the project.
01:27But in the end, Apple finally jumped in.
01:29The final numbers on the deal were not yet revealed.
01:32However, it's said that Apple will take the point as the creative studio
01:35and shoulder the cost for the project, while Paramount will distribute.
