Zack Snyder and his wife Deborah Synder tell THR on the red carpet what made Sofia Boutella the perfect Kora for 'Rebel Moon.'
Transcript
00:00You were telling us how you had this idea for Rebel Moon back when you were at Art
00:03Center.
00:04How does it feel to now finally be premiering this movie?
00:08It feels amazing.
00:09Look, it was a super long shoot because we did the two movies together.
00:14So I mean, the one thing is that on a normal premiere like this, you're like, oh my gosh,
00:19this is amazing.
00:20Now go rest.
00:21But I got to go to work tomorrow because I got to finish two.
00:26So that part is a little bit difficult from a physical standpoint, but the adrenaline
00:33and the excitement is really, I'm actually excited to go to work because I really want
00:38everybody to see a movie too.
00:39So that's really fun.
00:41For you, what has it been like seeing this project evolve over the years and become what
00:46it is now?
00:47Well, it was so many things over the years.
00:49It was a video game.
00:50It was a TV show.
00:52It was a movie.
00:53Then it was nothing for a while.
00:57It almost was Star Wars.
00:58And then it became this.
01:01And it's been amazing to do something wholly original, especially after working over a decade,
01:06you know, in the DC universe for so long.
01:09To be able to have the freedom to create these new characters and new worlds to introduce an
01:13audience to, I think has been most exciting.
01:17When you create a new world and build a world out like this, where do you start?
01:21Well, we start with story, of course.
01:24But then the next thing that happens is we have to go back and do the work of the mythological
01:30world building, which sort of determines the sort of mindset of the different people.
01:38So, like, when we did, like, we did the mother world entire mythological backstory so that
01:43we would understand their worldview when they come to Veldt.
01:46So, yeah, it's a lot of, a lot of stuff you don't even frankly see in the movie, but work
01:51we had to do to make it make sense.
01:52But I think that's what the fans love because it's all the Easter eggs.
01:55And it's the, we developed, like, four different languages for the film.
01:59So, seeing, like, oh, what is that writing or what is behind this corner?
02:03Like, it just makes it feel real, the world.
02:07What are you most excited for your fans to see in this movie?
02:10I think one of the things I'm super excited for them to see is just this, this crazy character
02:16of Korra that we created who's just, Sofia does an amazing job and just going on that
02:23journey with her and seeing what she's capable of and even just emotionally what she could
02:27come back from, the kind of, like, you know, she's on this cathartic journey and I hopefully,
02:33you know, we're on it with her and see her grow, you know, it's really, it's really cool.
02:39How did you know that Sofia would make the perfect Korra?
02:44You know, I wanted her from the beginning, but then when she was, when she was doing
02:50the casting, we did a casting session with her, a little audition, and she, well, frankly,
02:58when she did the scene, it was unbelievable, it was exactly what I'd wanted.
03:03And then when we did the fight choreography as just a test, she was so natural and so
03:09quick.
03:10I was just like, okay, this, this is going to be fun.
03:13Yeah, it was important to believe that she was actually this badass warrior.
03:19So she had to sell that and also sell the drama and that's a really hard thing to do.
03:24And she did all of her stunts except one where we had to throw her off the side of
03:29a scaffolding and we didn't think that was safe, but everything else she did all herself
03:33and that's so unique.
03:34So you're not covering someone's, you know, face because it's a stunt person and you don't
03:39want to recognize them.
03:40So I think that, in that way, she really sells it that much more.
03:44And Zach, I heard you have a photography book coming out when we shot.
03:48Yes.
03:49A portrait book.
03:50I shot of, I shot portraits of everyone, every cast member, like all the time.
03:55We built this like little sort of natural light photo studio on the stage and on location.
04:01And I would just take them and they were covered with blood or whatever.
04:03I go, okay, quick, run in here and shoot them.
04:06And it's just a really sort of beautiful document of the work that we did.
04:11When you shot your Hollywood Reporter cover, we saw a lot of those photos in your office.
04:15So excited to see more of your photography be available for people to purchase.
04:19Yeah, it's exciting.
04:20I mean, you know, it's been kind of this private love of mine, but, you know, just being able
04:25to shoot this cast was really something I had to show everybody.
