00:00Olivia Wilde is putting an airline on blast for censoring a same-sex love scene in her
00:04latest film, Booksmart. The actress took to Twitter to criticize Delta Airlines after
00:09seeing a censored version of the film on the flight that specifically takes out a
00:13lesbian sex scene and any references to female sexuality. Booksmart is Wilde's
00:17directorial debut and chronicles the lives of two graduating high school girls, played
00:21by Beanie Feldstein and Caitlin Dever, who decide to change their nerdy ways and live it up.
00:25At one point in the film, Dever's character has sex with another girl at a party.
00:29I finally had the chance to watch an edited version of Booksmart on a flight to see exactly
00:33what had been censored. Turns out some airlines work with a third-party company that edits
00:38the movie based on what they deem inappropriate, which in our case is female sexuality?
00:43Outside of the sex scene, other eliminations from the third-party company included the words
00:47vagina, genitals and part of a stop-motion scene featuring naked dolls when Feldstein
00:52and Dever's characters hallucinate after accidentally taking drugs. Although the actress
00:56noted curse words were not censored.
00:58What message is this sending to viewers and especially to women? That their bodies are
01:02obscene? That their sexuality is shameful? I urge every airline, especially those who pride
01:07themselves on inclusivity, to stop working with this third-party company and trust the
01:12parental advisory warning to allow viewers to opt out if they choose.
01:15Other showing censored versions of Booksmart include at the Hot Airways and Emirates Airlines.
01:19Both are based in the Middle East where Hollywood movies can face heavy censorship to abide to
01:23stricter cultures. For more on this story head to THR.com and until next time for The Hollywood
