00:00Hi!
00:02Hi!
00:04Hi!
00:06Hi!
00:08Hi!
00:10Hi!
00:12Hi!
00:24Hi!
00:26Sit, sit, sit on down!
00:28Sit on down!
00:30I gotta say, you guys, normally Cam
00:32got the most going on with his fit,
00:34but I think you might be outnumbered today.
00:36I'm son of the day. This a light day.
00:38You look like you just walked out of sinners or something.
00:40No, no, no, no. See, you tried it.
00:42That's right, what? All right?
00:44See, I just tried to
00:46emulate me making
00:48a message with my outfit. You know what I'm saying?
00:50I get it out the mud.
00:52Huh?
00:54Listen, I had to get it out the mud today,
00:56but we gonna have fun today.
00:58We sure are.
01:00We gonna have fun, so make sure you sit back,
01:02relax, and turn up.
01:04That's right.
01:06Listen, in all of the excitement
01:08of this beautiful crowd, I forgot to say,
01:10welcome to 106 in Sports,
01:12where we, yes,
01:14where we are counting down the top five moments
01:16in sports that matter to the culture.
01:18I am Ashley Nicole Moss.
01:20And I am Cam Newton.
01:22Outside of the beautiful crowd that we have tonight,
01:24we also have a packed show as well
01:26because tennis royalty Taylor Townsend
01:28is in the building.
01:30Oh, yeah.
01:31Yeah.
01:32And to solve, you know,
01:34my dog, playing part of the one
01:36and only, DeMarcus Boogie Cousins is here as well.
01:39Yes.
01:40And also, you guys have the same nickname, Boogie.
01:43Boogie.
01:44Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:45Boogie, Boogie, Boogie.
01:46It's gonna be going down a day.
01:48So please act accordingly, Ashley.
01:50You're already on strike one.
01:51All right?
01:52I have no problem getting strike two and three.
01:54Listen, plus a lot more.
01:56But before we get started with the countdown...
01:58That's right, too.
01:59Just up there.
02:00You're trying to make dogs on national TV, huh?
02:04But before we get started with the countdown,
02:07here are some of our favorite highlights from this week.
02:10This past weekend, FAMU in Alabama A&M gave us a tight one.
02:14FAM pulled out a 26-23 win behind a big day from R.J. Johnson.
02:20The third, he threw for 290.
02:24Now, dang, you couldn't get one more yard to get the 300?
02:27Oh, block?
02:28Ah!
02:29But he made it up with three touchdowns.
02:31The girls in the box also gave us a straight-up banger on Sunday
02:35and Josh Allen did what Josh Allen does best
02:38and that is put on an absolute show,
02:40breaking another one of Cam Newton's records.
02:44No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
02:48It's okay.
02:49It is okay.
02:50And I'm not gonna be the one that's gonna hate.
02:53I'm gonna be the one to congratulate.
02:56You love that.
02:57After weeks of waiting and questions and nonstop controversy,
03:03Shadour Sanders finally got his first real taste of the NFL.
03:07We know you had some strong feelings about what you saw,
03:11what you didn't see, the position that the Browns are not putting Shadour in.
03:16Do you want to give us a little bit of a sprinkling on your thought process?
03:20You can say all the right things in front of these cameras.
03:23Mm-hmm.
03:24But I don't listen to those things if you're showing me different.
03:28Kevin Stefanski for me has shown time and time again
03:31that he does not want Shadour Sanders to succeed.
03:35And it's evident when reports has it that the offensive line,
03:40that was the first time that he got reps with them in a live game?
03:45Hold on.
03:46When you look at what Shadour Sanders brings to the NFL platform,
03:51you look at what Shadour Sanders brings to the Cleveland Browns.
03:54It's evident that he is extremely talented,
03:58but it still is needed when you need reps, when you need help.
04:02And I don't think he's getting that, not adequately.
04:05So then you start to say, Kevin Stefanski says publicly,
04:08well, Dylan Gabriel is still our guy.
04:12Mm-hmm.
04:13He's still having even clear concussion protocol.
04:16This is true.
04:17Don't tell me what you think I want to hear.
04:20Or like my daughter say, don't tell me what you thought I wanted to hear.
04:23No.
04:24Huh?
04:25Tell me.
04:26Like, show me.
04:27I'm from Missouri by way of Atlanta, Georgia.
04:28Wakanda.
04:29Huh?
04:30I go about what you show.
04:31Then you start to say, well, he didn't get no reps with the first team.
04:34Well, then let me, let me, let me, let me, let me, let me.
04:37Let me, let me, let me, let me.
04:38Let me bring it back even more.
04:40I'm trying to take you somewhere now.
04:41I'm, I'm, I'm on the ride.
04:42I'm on the ride.
04:43I'm on the ride.
04:44The insufficiency that Shadur is being dealt versus what Dylan Gabriel.
04:47He said he don't get no reps with the first team because Dylan Gabriel need all the reps,
04:50right?
04:51Mm-hmm.
04:52Well, you just had Joe Flacco early in the season, right?
04:53Right.
04:54Did Dylan Gabriel get any reps as a second team?
04:56He did.
04:57As a second team quarterback.
05:00Oh.
05:01He got first team reps when Joe Flacco was the quote unquote starter.
05:04So don't tell me you don't give a backup opportunity when you.
05:09Okay.
05:10A backup opportunity when the situations was different.
05:12Let the church say amen.
05:14Amen.
05:15Stop me when I, when I, when I tell a lie.
05:18I will say though points were made absolutely, but we cannot negate the fact that although
05:24it wasn't the most ideal situation, his dad, Deion Sanders was extremely emotional seeing
05:29his son get his NFL star.
05:31And he said that he cried when he watched it.
05:33So although it wasn't ideal, it did mean a lot to Deion to see his son out there living
05:39his dream.
05:40That's a positive in the situation, no?
05:42If I'm Deion Sanders, I see a situation where like, yes, is he playing?
05:47Yes.
05:48But not like in these situations because whether it's management, whether it's a head coach,
05:54I don't give a doggone what it is.
05:56Somebody ain't looking out for my son the way somebody else looking out for somebody else's
06:01son.
06:02Let the church say amen.
06:03Amen.
06:04Cool.
06:05All right.
06:06Well, look, uh, bars were dropped.
06:08And if you could believe it, that's not even our countdown story.
06:11We are now going to get into the countdown.
06:13So are you guys ready?
06:14Yeah.
06:15All right.
06:16Okay.
06:17Here we go.
06:18Today's number five stories about love and basketball.
06:20Clay Thompson is clapping back at people who have something to say about his relationship
06:25with Megan Thee Stallion.
06:28Yes.
06:29Clay Thompson shut down former NBA players Jason Williams and Patrick Beverly after they claimed
06:35his relationship with Meg Thee Stallion was hurting his game.
06:40Clay called their comments, quote, disgusting and disturbing.
06:43And he's making it very clear that Meg isn't the problem.
06:47The way people talk about women is.
06:50Yes.
06:51I know that's right.
06:53It wasn't just what was said, but how it was said.
06:56Jason Williams said this on his Instagram, quote, it only takes one P-U-S, other letters,
07:03to drag a battleship across the desert.
07:06That's how powerful it is.
07:08Clay then responded on his Instagram saying, referring to my girlfriend as a, is so disgusting
07:13and disturbing, especially from someone who played in the NBA.
07:17How would y'all feel if I referred to your wives in such a way?
07:20He added Pat Bev and said, do better, fellas.
07:23Very disappointed.
07:25First of all, so obviously this story just isn't about celebrity dating.
07:32It's about disrespect.
07:33And I know, and Cam, you probably will remember this reference.
07:37It seems as though that women are given the brunt of when an athlete is not doing well.
07:44It's an easy target.
07:45Oh, it's because his girl.
07:46It's because his wife.
07:47You remember the Jessica Simpson curse when Tony Romo was dating her on the Dallas Cowboys.
07:52Every bad game Tony Romo had, it was Jessica Simpson's fault.
07:57Every bad game Klay Thompson had, it's Meg Thee Stallion's fault.
08:01Let me make this very clear for people who may not be as engulfed in the NBA as I am.
08:07Um, Klay Thompson has had two major injuries, not one, but two.
08:12Klay Thompson's also over the age of 30, which is young in everyday life.
08:17But in basketball years, it's kind of old and he's getting up there and he's getting older every season.
08:21Okay.
08:22So Jesus himself couldn't make Klay Thompson play better than he's playing.
08:26So it's real low hanging fruit to say that his relationship with Meg is a distraction and it's this and it's that.
08:32Last time I checked, Pat Bev was playing overseas.
08:34He's not even in the NBA.
08:36So Pat Bev might want to pull out of this one and mind his business.
08:40I'm just saying.
08:41Yeah, you can't say that.
08:44Just saying.
08:45I can.
08:46And I did.
08:47What was said, was it wrong?
08:51This is what I think.
08:53At no way, shape, form, am I condoning calling a woman out of their name?
08:58Mm-hmm.
08:59At no shape, form.
09:00Absolutely.
09:01Am I agreeing to call a woman out of their name?
09:03Okay.
09:04See, man, you got to understand.
09:06You got to make your point very clear.
09:08There's a but here.
09:10At no way, shape, form.
09:12I ran to the first time.
09:13Am I telling that calling a woman outside of her name is okay?
09:18But what's the but here?
09:19But he ain't doing nothing but doing bro talk.
09:23But you bro talking on a public platform.
09:25Which is cool.
09:26The only issue that I have, you don't refer to her or her goods as any type of explicit.
09:34The message is skewed because at no shape, form.
09:38I heard you.
09:39But bros still talk about bros.
09:44How you do it and it to be clear as okay, that's accepted.
09:49That's not accepted.
09:50I felt like they got too comfortable.
09:52Yeah.
09:53And why would their team give a sign off to say, okay, we're going to let that fly.
09:58No, no, no.
09:59Put it out on Twitter.
10:00Put it out on Instagram.
10:01Put it out on YouTube.
10:02Uh-huh.
10:03No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
10:04You got too comfortable there, bro.
10:05But let me ask you a question.
10:06To think that that will stop the debate of when dudes talk about dudes or certain situations
10:13in sports?
10:14No, that's not.
10:15I'm not saying it.
10:16If this were a regular shmegular person, but dude, you played in the NBA.
10:20Yeah.
10:21You should know better than that.
10:22Like, let me ask you a question.
10:23Let's shift it to the NFL.
10:25Okay.
10:26Is it Sierra's fault Russell Wilson was benched?
10:29No.
10:30Is it Sierra's fault Russell Wilson isn't the Russell Wilson we saw in Seattle?
10:33Is it her fault that he wasn't what he was in Pittsburgh now?
10:38Is it her fault that he isn't what he is now in New York and he's not playing?
10:43You know what I'm saying?
10:44So, like, it's low-hanging fruit to blame the wife, to blame the girlfriend, to blame
10:50the significant other, the partner.
10:52It's just low-hanging fruit.
10:53You know dang well it is not Meg's fault that Klay's not playing well.
10:58The man got an Achilles and an ACL injury.
11:01He's over 30 years old.
11:02It's hard out here when you get older in sports.
11:05You know?
11:06Your game's just not the same.
11:08Blaming Meg is whack.
11:10No, it's not you know, but you know.
11:14I hear you.
11:15I hear your point.
11:16Bros is gonna talk regardless.
11:20And just like women have their conversations, dudes gonna have their conversations too.
11:26Listen, that's my point.
11:27Two things can be true.
11:29Well, we wanna know what you think is true.
11:32So for you at home, let us know what you think.
11:35Is Meg affecting Klay's game or is that just foul play?
11:39Join the conversation using the hashtag 106inSports.
11:42Don't go anywhere because still on the show tonight we have your favorite tennis player.
11:47It is Atlanta's very own Taylor Townsend is in the building.
11:51And the always outspoken DeMarcus Briggie Cousins is here as well.
11:54Don't move.
11:554106inSports on the way.
11:57To see news up next in the world of sports, go to BET.com for our next up series presented by Jeep Grand Cherokee.
12:15Welcome back everybody to 106inSports where culture meets the game.
12:20Who's ready for our first gift?
12:22Look, one of the most inspiring athletes in the world of sports on and off the court.
12:28ATL, make some noise for your very own Taylor Townsend!
12:33You can keep your hands shut!
12:50Taylor, how you doing?
12:51Sweetie-wow!
12:52How you doing?
12:53How you doing?
12:54How you doing?
12:55How you doing?
12:56How you doing?
12:57How you doing?
12:58How you doing?
12:59Jason Paul?
13:00I'm doing good!
13:01You're welcome.
13:02I just appreciate, get right into it, man.
13:06I think what you've been able to display
13:08as a strong black woman
13:11has been something that us as black people
13:17can smile and say thank you for the representation.
13:21Absolutely.
13:21I appreciate that.
13:23I know you want to talk about this,
13:26but we saw that front and center at the U.S. Open.
13:29Yeah.
13:29And it wasn't, I don't even want to say her name.
13:33The quote was, no class, no education.
13:38And it was one of the things that the world saw.
13:41Yeah.
13:42As if to say she was trying to check you,
13:44but, oh, you big bang.
13:48That's honestly what I thought.
13:49I was like, oh, you're mad for real.
13:52But I honestly have been,
13:54I grew up being told, let your racket talk.
13:57And that's what I said.
13:59It's not the first time that this has happened.
14:02Not the second, not the third.
14:04With her specifically or just in general?
14:05With her specifically, even with other players.
14:07But honestly, like, she picked the right one.
14:09It wasn't even just black people or black women.
14:12It was like Americans, too,
14:14because there was that thing she said about America
14:16and everyone was like, wait, hold on now.
14:17Yeah, like, what?
14:18Slow down now.
14:18When you hear these words come out of black person now,
14:22all right, now.
14:23Yeah.
14:24It could go any way.
14:26It was a gunfire, like, on so many different levels.
14:28And I think that was the crazy thing about it.
14:30And I think that's the beautiful thing about tennis, too,
14:32is like when you have a game that intertwines America
14:35with all these different countries,
14:37it's like America really rallies behind their own
14:39in moments like that.
14:40And I thought that was dope to see.
14:41I love hearing you talk about life after motherhood
14:44and that adjustment and, you know,
14:47falling in love with your body again
14:49and how honest you've been
14:50because that's something that Naomi Osaka
14:51has been very honest about.
14:53And she's, you know, been honest about her struggles
14:55with postpartum and how that's affected her game.
14:57You two were on a boat recently.
14:59The video went vile of you guys doing the Nicki Minaj challenge,
15:02which we love to see.
15:03But I want you to kind of talk to me about that friendship,
15:06that relationship,
15:07but also how important it is to kind of knock down that barrier,
15:11like there's enough space for all of us
15:12and we all can kind of help each other in that space
15:16because only us as black women in spaces
15:19where there's not that many of us
15:20can understand each other's struggle.
15:22Yeah.
15:22I mean, it's funny that, you know,
15:24you say that because the invite was so random.
15:29Like we had spoken to each other maybe once or twice.
15:33Really?
15:33Before this trip.
15:35Wow.
15:35Yeah.
15:36And, you know, one of the times we had a very like
15:39an intimate moment in the locker room in Cincinnati
15:42after she had just come off the court.
15:44And I just went up to her and hugged her
15:45and I was like, you're going to be all right.
15:47Literally, that's all I said.
15:49She was crying.
15:50She, you know, I could tell that she wasn't happy.
15:51I was like, girl, you're going to be fine.
15:53That's literally like what I said.
15:55And so she invited me to the vacation
15:58and I was just like, at first, it was the same.
16:00Weird, like, I don't know you like that.
16:01Yes, it was the same thing.
16:03Right, right, right.
16:04Real?
16:04Like, I was, yeah, like, what we got going on here,
16:07you know, because it was so random
16:09and that also has like never happened.
16:12But when I went and like literally told her,
16:15I was like, I'm telling you,
16:17we're going to be in the same places
16:19and I'm going to come watch you play.
16:20She said, yeah, me too.
16:21It's not often that you see two people
16:24in the same draws of the same tournament,
16:27different places in the event,
16:29going and supporting each other.
16:30And I was like, I really feel like
16:31this is an opportunity for us to like...
16:34Shake the room a little bit.
16:35Yeah, and like be front and center,
16:37but it's not an act.
16:38It's so authentic and genuinely,
16:40like, I want to support you
16:41and you want to support me.
16:43Well, Taylor's not going anywhere
16:45because we're still counting down
16:46our top five moments.
16:48I hope everybody is ready for number four.
16:50Okay.
16:51Yeah.
16:52It is all about a new documentary
16:54that has been going viral on social media.
16:57Now, even if you don't know
16:58who this player is,
16:59now I do being a New Yorker
17:01because he was king in New York.
17:03The headline is very startling.
17:05All over social media,
17:06the clip and headline to the doc says
17:09from $20 million NBA career
17:11to moving back into the projects.
17:13And it's about Sebastian Telford.
17:15Athletes, at some point you stop playing
17:17and the money looks a lot different.
17:20And there are some people
17:22who make that adjustment
17:23and they make that adjustment seamlessly
17:25and they're kind of prepared for it
17:27for life after football,
17:28after tennis, after basketball.
17:29And then there are people
17:30who struggle with life after that.
17:33What is your standpoint on this
17:35or your take on this rather?
17:36You know, I can speak on my experience.
17:39I haven't had an endorsement.
17:42I just got a racket deal
17:43for the first time in eight years.
17:45I'm self-funding my clothing line
17:48to sponsor myself.
17:50I started that in May
17:53and I have, for the last eight years,
17:58nine years, I've bought my own clothes,
18:01shoes.
18:02You know, I am just now getting in a position
18:05where deals are coming in.
18:07And with tennis,
18:09if you don't have that backing
18:12or those sponsorships or whatever,
18:14you're literally living off of your prize money.
18:16So what you make...
18:18You have to win.
18:19What you make.
18:20And if you're not, you're in the red.
18:23And so my output was very,
18:27is very, very heavy
18:29because a lot of,
18:31all of my expenses come out of my pocket.
18:33Cam, you made that transition.
18:36Yep.
18:36Taylor talked about thinking about
18:38that transition way before the time
18:40is ready to come.
18:41I wonder, though,
18:42when did you have the conversation
18:44with yourself, with your team
18:45that I got to really start thinking
18:47about life after football
18:49and how did you prepare yourself
18:50to be in a lucrative position
18:52after you stopped playing in the NFL?
18:54I just want to educate people
18:56to how a situation like this happens.
18:59Okay.
19:00Because people find out
19:02or they see $20 million.
19:04How you got $20 million
19:06and you back in the project?
19:08Not all on the bank
19:09when you get that 20 M's.
19:11Sometimes it may.
19:12Sometimes it is.
19:13But the old T-word
19:15that us people need to understand,
19:19taxes.
19:20That's number one.
19:21And number two,
19:22if your output
19:24is way more than your input,
19:27your output will be the reason
19:30why you go broke.
19:32All right, Taylor,
19:33we want to play a little game
19:35that we call,
19:35and I need the crowd's help
19:37and repeat after me,
19:38it's called start,
19:39start,
19:40bitch,
19:40bitch,
19:41trade,
19:42trade.
19:43And we're going to walk over
19:44to the fan zone
19:45to do that.
19:46All right.
19:47Let's go.
19:50Okay, okay, hello.
19:54Look, okay, so this is how the game works.
19:56We're going to give you three names
19:58and you're going to start one,
19:59bench one,
20:00or trade one.
20:01Round one,
20:03these are our options.
20:05Four doubles,
20:05but new school.
20:06We got Coco Gauff.
20:07Okay.
20:08We got Naomi Osaka.
20:10Okay.
20:10And we have Sloane Steven.
20:11That's tough.
20:12I'm going to start Coco.
20:14Okay.
20:14She's still playing doubles right now.
20:16I think I would bench Sloane.
20:19I've played with Sloane before.
20:20We've done well together.
20:23Yeah.
20:24And I love Naomi.
20:25I'm sorry,
20:26but I got to try to say
20:27y'all just was on vacation together.
20:29A good boat partner
20:31doesn't make a good double partner.
20:32Yes, because I've actually
20:33asked her to play
20:33and she's like,
20:34yeah, no.
20:36Our last category,
20:38Cam,
20:38you're going to like this one.
20:39Who do you call for a clapback?
20:41We have Atlanta's very own
20:42NeNe Leakes.
20:43Queens' very own 50 Cent.
20:46And we got the boogie down
20:47Bronx' very own Cardi B.
20:50Okay.
20:51For a clapback?
20:52For a clapback.
20:53You got a clapback
20:54out of Troll,
20:55a hater.
20:56Okay.
20:56Everyone could have used them
20:58at the U.S. Open
20:59to give you some backup.
21:00Hot take?
21:00I'm taking 50 Cent.
21:0150 Cent.
21:02Yeah, 50 Cent.
21:03Not even.
21:03I'm starting.
21:04He's a professional troll.
21:06Okay.
21:07And also,
21:08he's a businessman,
21:09so he understands
21:10when it's too much.
21:11Like, okay,
21:12I can go there.
21:12Yeah.
21:13But then he knows
21:13kind of like
21:14how to pull it back sometimes.
21:15I've never seen that.
21:17I know.
21:18I ain't never seen 50 Cent.
21:19The shots might hit.
21:20The shots hit.
21:21No.
21:22All of them hit.
21:24Okay, okay.
21:25He over here
21:25trying to sledgehammer
21:27with an egg
21:27every time.
21:28Well, that's who I want
21:29on my team.
21:30So, um,
21:31I'm gonna bitch Cardi.
21:33Okay.
21:34And I'm gonna trade Nene.
21:35Okay.
21:36Yeah.
21:36Ooh, okay.
21:37That's what I think.
21:38Well, Taylor,
21:39look, before we let you go,
21:40anything that you have
21:41coming up
21:42that we should keep
21:42our eyes and ears open for?
21:44What's in the works?
21:45Give us a little sneak peek.
21:47Um,
21:47in the near future,
21:49I'm just excited
21:50to spend some time
21:50with my son.
21:51I mean,
21:51I was gone for seven weeks.
21:53And so, like,
21:54just being able to be home
21:55and be settled
21:56before having to pack up
21:57and be in the suitcase.
21:58But my first tournament,
21:59I'm starting down in Melbourne
22:01for the Australian Open.
22:02And down under.
22:03Yeah, down under.
22:06Miss Townsend,
22:07thank you.
22:08Yes.
22:09Please keep going.
22:10For sure.
22:10Because it's not,
22:11it's not a lot of us
22:12that's out there
22:13that can really resonate.
22:15Yeah.
22:15And the fact that you
22:16stayed true
22:17and are staying true
22:18to yourself,
22:20chef's kiss.
22:20Thank you, darling.
22:21Atlanta, make some noise
22:23for you very own.
22:27The 4106 in sports
22:30is on the way.
22:31Make sure you do not move
22:33because Demarcus Boogie Cousins
22:35is in the building
22:36and you do not want to miss
22:37this conversation.
22:44Oh.
22:51Welcome back, everybody,
22:53to 106 in sports
22:56where culture meets the game.
22:57Pam had to leave the couch
23:00to go over there
23:01to show that side of the room
23:02some love.
23:03That was all love,
23:04but this isn't
23:05because our number three topic
23:07on today's countdown
23:08is all about Texas A&M
23:10versus South Carolina.
23:11They had a moment
23:12that took over the weekend
23:14when a Texas State trooper
23:16was caught on video
23:17bumping into South Carolina
23:19players in the tunnel,
23:21then stepping toward them
23:23like they wanted
23:24or he wanted the smoke.
23:26Now, the clip went
23:27instantly viral
23:29and had everybody talking,
23:31including LeBron,
23:32who called for his job.
23:34LeBron James reposted the clip
23:36and said that the troopers
23:37should be suspended immediately,
23:39calling the whole thing
23:39quote, corny
23:40and questioning
23:41why an officer
23:42would escalate a moment
23:44with college kids
23:45to begin with.
23:46Stephen A. Smith
23:46also tweeted
23:47that the incident
23:48was quote,
23:48unacceptable
23:49and that the officer
23:50also needed to
23:52be held accountable
23:54and that the optics
23:55of the arms trooper
23:57confronting players
23:58are a very bad look
24:00for everyone involved.
24:02Cam, I will say this.
24:04He is also very lucky
24:07that those kids
24:08were raised correctly
24:09and didn't retaliate.
24:12Because if someone pushes you,
24:14your first instinct
24:14is to kind of defend yourself
24:16and push back.
24:16Those kids took the higher route
24:18and walked away.
24:18This is what we've seen
24:20in Rest in Peace 2,
24:22the likes of the George Floyds
24:24of the world.
24:25Right.
24:25Rest in Peace
24:26to the individuals
24:27that were senselessly killed
24:30because the police brutality
24:32that they had the authority
24:34to do so,
24:34they took it too far.
24:36When you have individuals
24:37like Colin Kaepernick
24:38taking a knee
24:39not to be rebellious,
24:40it's to bring light
24:42to an issue
24:43that is still evident
24:45in this country.
24:46Amen.
24:47So you can't tell me
24:48in College Station,
24:50Texas,
24:51that that specific officer
24:54thinks that
24:56African-Americans
24:57are in favor?
24:57No, there's definitely
24:58an ulterior
24:58underlining issue
25:00with him for sure
25:01because nobody reacts
25:02like that
25:03just unprovoked
25:05or unless that's already
25:06in their spirit.
25:06I absolutely agree
25:07with that for sure.
25:08That's all I'm saying.
25:09It's like
25:10racism
25:15is still evident.
25:17But let's highlight
25:18individuals
25:19that are bad individuals.
25:20That officer
25:21is a bad individual.
25:23Absolutely.
25:23And he should not
25:24have a job
25:25because if he's a deputy,
25:27if he's a sheriff,
25:28if he's a person
25:30of high regard,
25:31now everybody
25:32up under him
25:32is being taught
25:34by a bad individual.
25:37And that's the issue.
25:39That's the key.
25:39So, for that,
25:43it's extremely frustrating
25:44that here we are
25:45in 2025,
25:46so much has been sacrificed,
25:48even dating back
25:49to I have a dream.
25:51We're still living
25:53in a moment
25:53where bad individuals
25:55exist.
25:57And we need to
25:57control, alt,
25:59delete
25:59these bad individuals
26:01from having an opportunity
26:04to impact.
26:04Absolutely.
26:05Look, when we come back,
26:07DeMarcus Cousins is here,
26:08so don't move
26:09because more
26:10106 in Sports
26:11is coming up.
26:23Hello, everybody,
26:26and welcome back
26:27to 106 in Sports
26:28where culture meets the game.
26:29We are so excited
26:31about our next guest.
26:32Let me make sure
26:32I get all these accolades
26:33correct, all right?
26:34Four-time All-Star,
26:36Olympic gold medalist,
26:37and walking double-double.
26:40Absolutely.
26:41106, make some noise
26:42for my dog,
26:43DeMarcus Cousins.
26:53You good?
26:55How are you?
26:56How are you?
26:57How are you?
26:58There you go.
26:59Let's do it.
27:00Boogie meet Boogie?
27:01You dig what I'm saying?
27:02Feel me?
27:04For people who don't know,
27:05how did you get
27:05the nickname Boogie?
27:06Walk us through that.
27:07Cam won't tell me
27:07the origin of his nickname.
27:09You never asked.
27:09I did ask.
27:10Say less.
27:11I'll give it to you
27:11after you give it to me.
27:12What's the origin of yours?
27:13I got the name Boogie
27:14my freshman year,
27:16well, my only year
27:16at Kentucky.
27:17Okay.
27:18I had a coach
27:19by the name of
27:19Raj Strickland,
27:20NBA legend.
27:21When we would describe
27:22basketball players,
27:22we were like,
27:23you know,
27:23do they got certain
27:24like Boogie
27:24in their game
27:25or something like that.
27:26So I was one of those guys
27:28he considered
27:28that had a lot of Boogie
27:29in his game.
27:29Then the name
27:31ended up sticking.
27:32Is that how you
27:32got your nickname?
27:33No, no.
27:34I had to give myself
27:34an alter ego.
27:35Because one thing
27:37about it, bro,
27:38DeMarcus can't
27:39play basketball
27:40and be effective.
27:41That's fine.
27:42You have to give yourself
27:43a license to be,
27:44okay,
27:45this is the person
27:46that's the bad guy.
27:47This is the guy
27:48that is from Atlanta.
27:50Huh?
27:51And I gave myself
27:52grace to say,
27:53okay,
27:53Cam is one person,
27:55Boogie is the other person
27:57that I'm going
27:57to give that person
27:59and that grace
27:59to really be
28:01the showstopper.
28:01Did you feel
28:01that way
28:02when you were playing
28:02that DeMarcus
28:03was one person
28:04and Boogie
28:05was a completely
28:06different person?
28:07Absolutely.
28:07Okay.
28:08You know,
28:08that's kind of
28:09part of my issue.
28:10For the most part
28:11when the average person
28:13is watching you
28:13play or perform
28:14or do your art,
28:16they only see you
28:17in that form.
28:18So they start
28:19to believe
28:20that's exactly
28:20who you are
28:21as a person.
28:22And I'll be the first
28:23to admit
28:24when I'm on the floor,
28:24I'm an animal.
28:25I'm ready
28:26to rip your head off.
28:27I'm going to do
28:27whatever it takes
28:28to win the game.
28:29But once the clock
28:32hits zero
28:32and I'm off the court,
28:33I'm a totally
28:34different person.
28:34There's no difference
28:35than Beyonce
28:36when she on stage
28:37and she refers
28:38to herself
28:38as Sasha Fierce.
28:40You know what I'm saying?
28:41It's all the same thing.
28:42And when it comes
28:44to people trying
28:45to figure out
28:46who you are
28:46as a person,
28:47like I said,
28:47that can cause
28:49some sort of an issue
28:50if the person
28:51doesn't understand
28:52who you are
28:52off the floor.
28:53I had to find out
28:54the hard way.
28:55A couple years ago,
28:56we was in a creator league.
28:58So I was like,
28:59who are I going to be there?
29:00They started listing down
29:01and listing people
29:02and this person,
29:02that person.
29:03I'm like,
29:04Boogie Cousins?
29:05I'll bet.
29:06Right?
29:07But before my team
29:08played this team,
29:09he had just got finished
29:10serving another team.
29:12It was like,
29:13yo,
29:13he damn near scored
29:14all the points.
29:15But who would be?
29:17I said,
29:17he'll never do that on me.
29:18On mama now.
29:21And what'd he do?
29:22Score all the points
29:23on me.
29:24On mama.
29:25And I say,
29:25hold on,
29:26hold on,
29:26hold on,
29:26hold on,
29:26hold on,
29:27hold on,
29:27hold on.
29:28I knew the type
29:29of way that I needed
29:30to play him
29:30was not going to be
29:31safe for that situation.
29:33I wasn't trying
29:33to be physical
29:34as much,
29:35but I wasn't trying
29:36to get embarrassed either.
29:38Which leads me
29:38to this point.
29:40A couple weeks ago,
29:41we had an individual
29:42by the name of
29:43Brittany Griner.
29:45And I asked her
29:46that same question.
29:47Could she beat
29:49Boogie Cousins
29:50in one-on-one?
29:52I definitely,
29:53I went on the record
29:54and said that I would
29:55beat DeMarcus Cousins
29:56in a game
29:57with a referee.
29:58Yes.
29:59I'm the one
29:59that's going to
30:00ask the question.
30:02Could she beat you
30:03in one-on-one?
30:05Hell no.
30:06But,
30:07but what would be,
30:08what would be...
30:09Short and sweet,
30:11hell no.
30:12But is there
30:13a world where
30:14you see
30:14a woman
30:16beating a man
30:18in basketball?
30:19Absolutely.
30:19And it's...
30:20But it's just not her
30:21with you?
30:21No, I'm different.
30:23Oh, okay.
30:24I'm separate.
30:25When you think
30:25about the game
30:25of basketball,
30:26it's thought about
30:27in different ways.
30:28You know,
30:28it could be thought
30:29about in the aspect
30:30of one-on-one,
30:31two-on-two,
30:32three-on-three,
30:33five-on-five,
30:33whatever the case may be.
30:35It's some people
30:35that are brilliant
30:36in the game
30:37of five-on-five
30:38and also atrocious
30:40in one-on-one
30:40at the same time.
30:41You know what I'm saying?
30:42So when you think
30:43about it like that
30:43and you break
30:44the game down
30:45like that,
30:45absolutely,
30:46I think a woman
30:47could win.
30:48Absolutely.
30:48You actually forgot
30:49to tell the full part
30:51of the story
30:51when you played
30:52Demarcus in
30:53the Creator League.
30:54He dropped you
30:54and you dropped
30:55your hat.
30:56I dropped you
30:57for sure.
30:58So, hold on,
30:58matter of fact,
30:59give me your
31:00explanation of
31:01what you mean
31:01by dropping.
31:02You hit the floor
31:03and your hat
31:03followed.
31:04No.
31:06That sound like
31:07a drop to me.
31:07No, no, no, no, no, no.
31:09Who takes a charge
31:10at the three-point line?
31:10Listen, who takes
31:13a charge in general?
31:13I was trying
31:14to get the ball
31:15back, brother.
31:17And I was losing
31:18all type of options.
31:19So I said,
31:19let me just take a charge.
31:20You are admitting
31:21you dropped
31:22and hit the floor.
31:24Well, listen.
31:25Okay.
31:26But how I got there
31:27was different.
31:28A drop was a drop.
31:30But speaking of drop,
31:30we're going to keep
31:31it moving
31:31with our countdown
31:32because in at number two,
31:34it is all about
31:35somebody who was dropped
31:37from the Dallas Mavericks.
31:38Sheesh.
31:39We're talking about
31:40Nico Harrison,
31:40the Dallas Mavericks
31:41recently fired the GM
31:42after a disastrous run
31:44of players' trades
31:45and injuries
31:46that left the team
31:47spiraling.
31:49Most notably,
31:50the trading of
31:51Luka Doncic
31:51to the Lakers
31:52for Anthony Davis.
31:54A lot of us
31:55were just taken aback
31:56that you would trade
31:56away a player
31:57of Luka's magnitude,
31:59especially when
32:00the Dallas Mavericks
32:00were just fresh off
32:01of the Western Conference
32:02Finals.
32:03So it had a lot
32:04of people wondering
32:05if there were
32:06underlining issues
32:08between Nico
32:09and Luka,
32:10because if you remember,
32:11everything that could
32:12possibly defame
32:13a player's reputation,
32:15his work ethic,
32:16seemed to just be coming
32:17out of the woodwork
32:19once that trade happened
32:20as a way to justify it.
32:22A lot of people
32:23were calling for Nico's job
32:24back then.
32:25He made it seem,
32:25you remember,
32:26he went on this entire
32:27media tour.
32:28The team got better.
32:29This was a better decision.
32:30And the Mavs
32:31aren't doing that well.
32:32So what do you make
32:33of this entire situation?
32:34When it's a move
32:35this big,
32:36it's no way
32:37it doesn't come
32:37from the higher-ups.
32:39Obviously,
32:40Nico is the GM
32:41of the Mavericks,
32:42well, it was the GM,
32:44but everybody has somebody
32:45that they have to answer to.
32:46But the issue also is
32:48there were injuries
32:49that took place.
32:50Kyrie Irving,
32:51right, for example.
32:52Anthony Davis.
32:53Now, if you add in
32:55if those things went right,
32:57would he still have a job?
32:58I do think on paper,
33:01you know,
33:01when you look at the roster
33:02after the trade,
33:02it looked good.
33:03You know,
33:04was it a championship team?
33:06That's, you know,
33:06that's still in the air.
33:07But that's the only part
33:09I don't like about
33:09the firing of Nico
33:10is he didn't really
33:11get an opportunity
33:12for his plan
33:13to, you know,
33:14come to work.
33:15So if you were
33:15going to fire him,
33:16the firing should have
33:17happened after Luka,
33:18not after the trade
33:19where he doesn't get to see
33:21if the trade works or not.
33:23Like, you're already in it.
33:24You might as well stick it.
33:25You might as well
33:25see what happens.
33:26Okay.
33:26As a person who
33:28was the face of a franchise,
33:30a lottery pick,
33:31a person that really
33:33moved the needle
33:34for a franchise,
33:36when you see a situation
33:37like Ja Morant take place,
33:39explain what would be
33:40a message that you would have
33:41for a Ja?
33:43Well, one,
33:43I put my arm around him.
33:45You can tell
33:46he's in need
33:46of real veteran presence.
33:48But that's one of my issues
33:50with the league.
33:50You bring in these young talents
33:52from all types of backgrounds
33:54and the people
33:55that are bringing
33:55the talents in
33:56don't relate to these kids
33:58from these different backgrounds.
33:59So the moment
34:00it becomes uncomfortable
34:02for the person
34:03that brought them in,
34:04they automatically
34:05get a bad label.
34:06When in actuality,
34:07you just can't relate.
34:08Our foundation
34:09is different
34:09from those coming from,
34:11we're going to just
34:11label it a PWI.
34:12Yeah.
34:13Once that situation
34:14comes to a head,
34:15it's going to always
34:16be a difference.
34:17And I think that's
34:18what we're looking at now.
34:19Yeah.
34:20Well, we want to know
34:20what you all think,
34:21so make sure you're
34:22using the hashtag
34:23106 in sports.
34:25And coming up,
34:26the number one topic
34:27plus more
34:27from our very own
34:29DeMarcus Cousins.
34:30Make sure you don't move
34:31because more 106 in sports
34:33is coming up.
34:44Welcome back, everybody,
34:46to 106 in sports.
34:48We have reached
34:49the number one story
34:50in our countdown,
34:51but before we get
34:52into that,
34:53recently there was a story
34:54about LaMelo Ball
34:55and when he was going
34:56through the draft process,
34:57he had sat down
34:59with the Timberwolves
34:59and they asked him,
35:00hey, what do you want
35:01to do when you retire
35:03from the NBA?
35:04And he said,
35:05I want to be president
35:06of the United States.
35:08Right?
35:09Okay, listen,
35:10high aspirations,
35:11but they basically said
35:13that that was something
35:14they used to determine
35:16that he was not the player
35:17for their organization.
35:19They ended up drafting
35:20Anthony Edwards,
35:20which worked out phenomenal.
35:22Ant-Man, we love him,
35:23Atlanta's very own.
35:24But the question I really have
35:25for the both of you,
35:27is there too much emphasis
35:29on the ridiculous questions,
35:32the non-sports related questions
35:33when it comes to the draft process
35:35in determining whether or not
35:38a player is ready to either play
35:39or lead your organization?
35:41Boogie, I'll start with you.
35:42I think it's yes and no.
35:43You got to remember,
35:43this is a billion dollar business,
35:45so they're deciding on
35:46who they're willing
35:47to invest their money on.
35:48So they want to know
35:49everything about you
35:50from your favorite color
35:51to your favorite food
35:52to who your favorite
35:53elementary school teacher was.
35:54It does get a bit ridiculous
35:56sometimes in the interviews,
35:58and I've witnessed it firsthand,
36:00so I know.
36:01But at the same time,
36:02it also makes sense.
36:03It's no different
36:04than qualifying for another job.
36:06Your thoughts on that,
36:07obviously a little bit different
36:08from the NBA,
36:09but it's still a draft process,
36:10and we've seen stories
36:11come out about
36:11the ridiculous questions that...
36:13Jim Harbaugh,
36:14he was with the 49ers,
36:16and he asked me,
36:19jumped straight into it.
36:21We sat down, shook hands, cool.
36:23He said,
36:24hey, we drafted you,
36:24your daddy's going to be an issue?
36:26I said, what?
36:29What?
36:29He just came
36:31and flat out asked me
36:32that question.
36:33And now,
36:33given the climate of the question,
36:35I went through
36:35an NCAA investigation,
36:37allegedly,
36:38and came out unscathed.
36:42But the reality of that was
36:44they do that
36:46because they can,
36:47but I get why they do.
36:50They need to see
36:50if they're going to get an ROI.
36:52Well, for the people
36:53who don't understand
36:54what that is,
36:55they want to see
36:55if they're going to get
36:56a return on their investment.
36:58You both mentioned
36:58the money involved
36:59in professional sports,
37:01which leads us
37:01to the number one topic
37:02of the week,
37:03and that is
37:04all about Steph Curry.
37:06After 13 years,
37:08he is parting ways
37:09with Under Armour,
37:10and the Curry brand
37:12is going independent.
37:14When you see
37:14this type of situation happen
37:17with player representation,
37:19do you see more players
37:20getting involved
37:21with representing themselves
37:22from the apparel side?
37:24I think it is something
37:25that's happening.
37:26There's been a few guys
37:27that kind of come out
37:28on their own
37:29and try to create
37:30their own brand.
37:30I think the biggest right now
37:32would probably be
37:32somebody like Jalen Brown
37:33with his own brand
37:34in Boston.
37:35But I think it's a dope thing.
37:38you kind of compare
37:39to the music business.
37:40Demarcus,
37:41before we let you go,
37:42I know you're now
37:42in the media game,
37:44and you said
37:44you are loving it.
37:46How do you balance
37:47being an athlete
37:48and having to critique athletes?
37:51And is it ever
37:52uncomfortable for you
37:53because you are part
37:54of the brotherhood,
37:54you don't say certain things?
37:56Can I ask it?
37:57Go ahead, ask it.
37:58Have you ever got
37:59the he's bitter
38:01or he's hating
38:02from players?
38:03From a player?
38:05Never.
38:05It's coming.
38:06It probably is.
38:07I'm telling you.
38:07No, I believe it.
38:08And I've seen you
38:09also have to kind of
38:10go through that.
38:10I'm there.
38:11Like my man back
38:12there in the back
38:12was like,
38:13yo, bro,
38:13I'm Team Gilly over here.
38:15We Philadelphia Eagles fans.
38:16And I'm like, bro.
38:17I am a Jalen Hurst fan,
38:18by the way.
38:19Roll Tide.
38:19So I don't appreciate that.
38:21Oh.
38:22Nah, nah.
38:23I'm glad we went there.
38:24But what college
38:25did you go to, brother?
38:26I went to Kentucky.
38:27Where was I born?
38:28So he's set tripping those.
38:29You know what I'm saying?
38:31You got to pick a set
38:32at Burp,
38:32Auburn or Alabama.
38:33Yeah, brother.
38:34It's all right.
38:35We beat them too.
38:36You know what I'm saying?
38:36Y'all got one rinky dink.
38:37That's okay.
38:38Rinky dink,
38:38stinky dink is all matter.
38:40That thing's still
38:41blinky dink.
38:41Look,
38:42that's going to do it
38:43for us here at
38:44106 in Sports.
38:45Big thank you
38:46to our guests.
