00:17You couldn't believe that it would happen here in South East Queensland.
00:24You kind of have a really awful feeling in the pit of your stomach.
00:29What's inside the toolbox?
00:32And there was a moment where the crane just brings up this toolbox.
00:39Just swinging in the air.
00:44It's one of the most horrific crimes that we've covered.
00:52To me, this is pure evil.
00:59This was a case that we thought was finished, but it wasn't.
01:05The murder convictions have been overturned on appeal.
01:07That police video, it's as chilling as it gets.
01:35In the pitch black, the dark of night, this dark secret that would shock not just hardened
01:46police officers from the highest levels, right through the community, it really was the stuff
01:52of nightmares.
01:52You've got the detective in the pink shirt, Nicole Tonks, and the man that is really leading
02:00the party, he has handcuffs on, Tarangi Thomas Tahiata.
02:04You have to think she would have had a sense of apprehension.
02:17Walking down a dark path.
02:19Tarangi Thomas Tahiata, he's just spilled his guts at the police station.
02:29So they head to Scrubby Creek, really an isolated, dark part of Logan, maybe 15 minutes from
02:43the city centre.
02:51This is an area notorious for dumping rubbish, dumping stolen cars.
02:56This time, however, it was bodies that were dumped, submerged in a toolbox 14 days ago.
03:15He's describing the final moments of the victims.
03:19Two friends, both parents with loving families, but sadly, just mixed up with drugs.
03:34The murder of Corey Breton and Ileana Toscaru will remain with me forever.
03:39Seeing some of the things that these people have done to Corey and Ileana, sometimes questions
03:55what is humanity?
03:58You just, why?
04:01It's definitely a story that stays with people, because it just is one of the most horrific
04:14crimes that we've covered.
04:20No one could believe that this would happen in Logan, South East Queensland.
04:31Queensland is known as the Sunshine State, and Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, in Australia,
04:39really, yeah, the beating heart of that state.
04:43Just 20 minutes south is Logan.
04:46Another 20 minutes south is the Gold Coast, which is heaven on earth.
04:52Brisbane and the Gold Coast could be on the other side of the planet.
04:56That is how different they are to Logan.
04:59It falls between the cracks.
05:07Good evening.
05:08A mother of seven is among six people charged with murder over the killing of a man and woman
05:13at Logan.
05:14The pair was bashed, tortured, shot and stuffed in a toolbox before being dumped in a dam.
05:21A macabre end to a savage crime.
05:24At a Kingston dam, a crane swings a tradie's toolbox from the water.
05:29It became a makeshift coffin.
05:33This will have a long lasting impact.
05:37A shattering impact on the lives of everyone involved.
05:41The police officers, the lawyers, the families.
05:44Anyone who listened to it, how could you not be impacted by the brutality of this case?
05:49They've had to use cranes and things to actually remove the box from where it was because it was sort of wedged in mud.
06:05A number of things have been placed on top of the rocks to try and hold it down.
06:12It took them quite a large amount of time to actually extract the box from there.
06:26We were sitting there in the newsroom.
06:28The helicopter went up and we could see pictures watching the screen.
06:32And the crane just brings up this toolbox just swinging in the air.
06:48So as these images were coming in, they were quite chilling and our first thoughts were, what's inside the toolbox?
06:54I'd never seen anything like it.
06:58The thought that there could be, and then there ended up being two people inside that toolbox in what was really a makeshift coffin.
07:07It was just horrifying.
07:12It's not something that happens every day where two people get tortured, bound and put into a large toolbox to ultimately be murdered.
07:24It's probably one of the most horrific cases I've ever had to deal with involving two people and over what later we found to be something such a trivial matter in which it was perceived to have occurred over.
07:45It's mind boggling.
07:46It all began in this nondescript unit in Logan called the TAV, where a group of drug sellers and users gathered to smoke ice on the afternoon of January 24th.
08:07It's a unit complex that's commonly referred to as the TAV, a place where they have all gone to hang out, party, drink and just socialise generally, including drug use.
08:25Hanging out at the TAV that day was Stowe Daniels, he's the 21 year old New Zealander, a big guy, intimidating guy. He was the boss.
08:37Also there was his trusted lieutenant, henchman, 22 year old Trent Thrapp.
08:44Also there, New Zealanders, Davey Tao, he's 21, and 24 year old Tarangi Thomas Tahiata, the man in that police video that led them obviously to Scrubby Creek.
08:55Others who came to the apartment were Waylon Walker, just 22, Webb Stellatu, 31, Tupuna Tupuna Mariri, Gattakuna Morietti, Leland Harrington, who actually lived at that apartment at the TAV, and Corey Breton, a 28 year old father of one.
09:19Plus mum of three, Yuliana Triscano.
09:24Corey and Yuliana were lured to the TAV, and sadly, by the end of the day, they would be dead.
09:37The level of cruelty in this case reflects, in my view, pure evil.
09:42I was horrified by the cruelty, the sadism, and the complete disregard for human life in relation to the murder of these two individuals.
09:55But I can't think of any case quite like this in my 47 years of practice.
10:01This must be one of the most horrific homicides I've not only witnessed through the media, but also read.
10:13I recall seeing when the toolbox was recovered from the creek and hoping that it would be empty.
10:30And unfortunately, it wasn't.
10:31It's just terrific to think that two young people, over nothing, were murdered.
10:52What we know about Corey is that he was a regular suburban guy.
11:03He loved sport.
11:04He loved his family.
11:05He owned his own house.
11:06He had a business.
11:08But he did slip into drug addiction.
11:12Methamphetamine.
11:13Ice.
11:14My name is Lara.
11:21Uliana is my sister-in-law and we call her Tabby.
11:25I introduced Uliana to Corey, because Corey was one of my friends as well.
11:30But, like, I didn't know the extent of what he was involved with.
11:33He owned his own house.
11:35He owned his business.
11:37He had a wife.
11:39He loved his daughter very much.
11:41Corey loved his little girl.
11:42He wasn't your typical drug user or drug addict.
11:46He was a high-functioning drug user, I suppose.
11:49But his morals never changed.
11:52Corey's morals never changed.
11:56Corey, up until about a year before his death,
12:00he was a successful young man with a pro-social attitude.
12:04He had acquired a home at a young age.
12:05He had a family.
12:08And then for some reason or other, he began using ice.
12:12And it's a very graphic example of how this drug can grab people.
12:16And he then slid into, it would seem, a world of addiction
12:20and a world of associating with undesirable people
12:23who were supplying the drug to him.
12:25It's a classic example of what ice can do to people.
12:29Those in the community who tut-tut about drug use,
12:33it can happen to anybody.
12:38Tabitha is Juliana's middle name.
12:40She's feisty, that's for sure.
12:43Whenever she's around, it lights up everyone's day.
12:47And she was a resilient person.
12:49To come from Romania, to move here, from that life,
12:54she made it work.
12:56She has three beautiful children,
12:58and even that didn't stop her from being with her brothers
13:01and her family, you know.
13:04I reported Juliana missing on her birthday
13:06because that was just become bizarre,
13:09like, for Juliana not to even come home for her birthday.
13:11Incredibly, this all started with one blurry photo
13:27of Stowe Daniels.
13:30It was at a convenience store that Corey frequented.
13:33So the store owner of that convenience store
13:37was actually an old-school friend of Corey's.
13:41He asked Corey where he sourced his drugs,
13:43to which Corey just simply replied,
13:46islanders.
13:50The store owner later texted Corey that photo,
13:54that grainy photo of Stowe Daniels,
13:56asking, is this him?
14:01And Corey replies, yeah, that's him.
14:05He's a big-timer.
14:07Not a person to be f***ed with, lol.
14:14Police identified Stowe Daniels
14:17to be the leader of the group.
14:22He seems to be the controller.
14:25And everybody looked up to him.
14:27Everybody took his orders.
14:29When he spoke, they came.
14:31When he called them, they came.
14:34Davy Toe was one of his lieutenants, so to speak,
14:38with Trent Throp being one of his other enforcers.
14:43Where all the others seemed to hang around
14:45because of drugs, basically.
14:48Corey made a fatal mistake.
14:56He showed the photo of Daniels
14:58that was on his phone to another man.
15:00That man was Leland Harrington,
15:02central to this investigation.
15:05Harrington then tells Daniels,
15:07and that is when Stowe Daniels
15:09goes absolutely ballistic.
15:11In his mind, he conjures up this fake reality
15:20that Corey is a rat,
15:22that he's actually working with police,
15:24and that could not have been further from the truth.
15:30When it comes to Juliana,
15:31I think this is one of the most tragic elements
15:33of this case,
15:34because she was just in the wrong place
15:37at the wrong time.
15:37She happened to be with Corey
15:41when he showed Harrington
15:43the photo of Stowe Daniels.
15:47So Daniels believes that Corey is this rat,
15:50is this police informer,
15:51so he instructs and probably bullies
15:55Leland Harrington into luring the two of them,
15:58that is Corey and Juliana,
16:00to the TAV.
16:03It was known for a place
16:05that these drug users would hang out.
16:08On face value,
16:09she really had no reason to be suspicious,
16:11because Corey was her friend,
16:12and it was a text coming from him.
16:14Or so she believed.
16:19Mr Harrington said he was called to get Corey there,
16:22to have a talk, have a chat.
16:24So Mr Bretton had no idea of what was to occur,
16:27no idea of what possible motive was behind this.
16:31Daniels is upset that his photograph's out there,
16:35and that's the reason why he summonses Juliana and Corey
16:41to that unit that day,
16:42and unfortunately, that's where their lives were lost.
16:50The paranoia, again, goes back to use of illicit drugs,
16:54specifically ice,
16:55they become paranoid.
16:59That's the only thing we can come back to.
17:03I mean, it's an old trope,
17:04never use your own product.
17:06So meth produces paranoia.
17:13It also is highs and lows and crashes.
17:15So your decision-making is impaired.
17:21Your paranoia is heightened,
17:28and when you've got multiple people on meth
17:31feeding ideas to each other,
17:35that paranoia will jump again.
17:37Thanks to one of the most exhaustive police investigations imaginable,
17:54we now know what happened inside that unit.
17:57We've got a really clear picture of what happens at the TAV.
18:00Evidence includes seized CCTV from in and around the apartments,
18:10and that includes from street cameras as well,
18:12picking up the comings and goings from the unit.
18:18Corey Bretons, he arrives in his Pajero,
18:22the Silver Mississippi Pajero.
18:24He drives into the unit complex through the main gate,
18:26and he has his arm out the window.
18:30Corey Breton, upon arriving, was beaten.
18:41Bound with zip ties.
18:45Stabbed in the leg, tortured.
18:51Repeatedly questioned by Mr. Daniels
18:54over the photo located on his phone.
19:00It was at that point that Ileana was contacted
19:03to come to the TAV.
19:09The CCTV shows Ileana coming in through that back gate
19:13and what she's last wearing.
19:15It is at that point, that's the last time she's seen alive.
19:17Upon her arrival, she wasn't subject to the same violence
19:37that Mr. Breton was, but she was bound.
19:39They were zip ties, zip ties were placed around their throats
19:46and tightened.
19:49Then they were held restrained on a couch
19:53in the unit complex.
19:55Now, she has no part in this.
20:00Let's be reminded of that.
20:02She's got no part in this.
20:05She's just an occasional person that Corey knows.
20:09However, she's lured to that unit,
20:11and they're beaten about.
20:13They were lured to a drug den.
20:21They were zip tied.
20:22They were tortured.
20:23They were begging for their lives.
20:27All while their tormentors were partying.
20:33From the autopsy report,
20:36Corey's arm was broken, fractured in a number of places.
20:38So he'd been severely beaten.
20:41A young mother,
20:43inevitably pleading for a life.
20:48Thinking about her young children and so.
20:52To me, this is pure evil.
20:57These people are psychopaths, clearly.
20:59No remorse, no empathy.
21:01Bad, not mad.
21:06People kept arriving at the unit.
21:07There were nine in the end,
21:09in this unit, in the TAV,
21:11plus the two victims.
21:12The hours were dragging on.
21:20There was drinking.
21:21People were taking ice.
21:24Daniels and his enforcers
21:26were doing the torturing.
21:29But the others were there.
21:32But they did nothing.
21:35There was a woman there, Marriati.
21:37And she was there to buy drugs.
21:42She knew the woman who was due to be murdered.
21:44Their children knew one another.
21:46She was a mother of seven children.
21:49And she finds ice in the bra of the woman
21:52who's going to be killed.
21:53They were friends.
21:57They looked after each other's children.
22:00And not only was she prepared to be part of this murderous plot,
22:06but in the days afterwards,
22:07she lied to Juliana's family,
22:11telling them that Juliana was fine.
22:13That level of deception is beyond most of us.
22:19So maybe in an act of bravado,
22:25maybe in an act of trying to petrify them,
22:29a big metal toolbox is brought upstairs
22:32and placed in front of them.
22:34You can't imagine what was going through
22:40Corey and Juliana's minds at that point.
22:47And they are forced into the box.
22:49Some time that afternoon,
23:00Juliana managed to free herself from the toolbox.
23:05And she was in the confines of the lounge room.
23:08This is such a critical moment.
23:12This is when Juliana escaped from the toolbox.
23:15She saw Leland Harrington.
23:17Now, remember, Leland's the one
23:18who first showed that photo to Stowe Daniels.
23:22So he saw her escape and she motioned to him.
23:26The shh, shh.
23:28Did he?
23:29No.
23:29He yelled out,
23:30she's escaping, she's escaping.
23:38They threatened her, assaulted her
23:42and placed her back in the toolbox.
23:47And Thrup then sat on that toolbox
23:50to prevent her from escaping again.
23:56So Mariette, she's sent by Stowe Daniels,
23:58the ringleader, to a hardware store
24:00to get some alcohol
24:03and also to get some cleaning products.
24:06So at this stage,
24:08now we are sort of seeing
24:09what the future holds.
24:13They tried to clean up blood
24:14and other items
24:15from inside the unit complex
24:17to try and hide what they'd been doing.
24:19And the torture of Corey Bretton,
24:21obviously, he'd been stabbed in the leg.
24:24There's blood.
24:26So they've had to clean up a lot of things.
24:29Once they've finished cleaning up
24:30all the blood and evidence,
24:32they've wiped everything down.
24:35Bleach, you know,
24:36it was all placed into
24:38plastic bags on top of them
24:39in the toolbox.
24:46There was a culture of fear
24:48within this group.
24:49Some of the people in the group
24:51felt that if they didn't go along with this,
24:53that they might be next.
24:54They were worried
24:55they could be in the toolbox next.
24:59Take Tapuna Tapuna Mariri, for example.
25:01He was ordered to assist
25:02in this torture, right?
25:03And his job was to make the Tav
25:06soundproof, really,
25:07to shut the doors,
25:09to shut the windows,
25:10ultimately to drown out
25:12the victim's anguished cries.
25:13Later on that afternoon,
25:21that toolbox was carried to a ute.
25:24So Stowe Daniels realises,
25:26all right,
25:27something needs to be done.
25:28So he gets the toolbox
25:30and loads it onto the back of a ute.
25:32Members of that group
25:34then disguised the noises
25:36coming from the inside of the toolbox
25:38because you could be hear
25:40the kicking and screaming.
25:43And you would imagine
25:44that it would have been
25:46loud screaming and loud kicking
25:48because you are kicking for your life.
25:51And so much so,
25:53and this is where the devious part
25:54of this investigation comes to,
25:56so the offenders
25:58turned music up
25:59loud
26:00to disguise the noise.
26:02Another young lady,
26:12a witness walking home from work,
26:14heard screaming and kicking,
26:17but wasn't aware
26:17where it was coming from.
26:22But later told investigators
26:24that it was possibly
26:25coming from a ute
26:27driving up the driveway
26:28out onto the roadway.
26:32So Stowe Daniels
26:42says,
26:43all right,
26:43everyone,
26:44let's get into six vehicles
26:45and that includes Corey's,
26:46the car that he actually
26:47drove to the unit in.
26:51One issue is
26:52he doesn't tell everyone
26:53where to go,
26:54right?
26:54So they all take off
26:55in different directions.
27:01Police are able to obtain
27:02images of Mr. Tahata's
27:05Green High Lakes utility
27:06with a large toolbox
27:08held down by a number of straps,
27:11heading southbound initially
27:12and then heading northbound back.
27:17So police,
27:18with the help of CCTV,
27:19were able to track the ute,
27:22which eventually led them
27:24to the destination,
27:25led them to Scrubby Creek.
27:26This is their last moments live.
27:33This is,
27:34a few doors CCTV shows
27:36the,
27:36this is the last
27:37vision we get
27:38of the green Toyota
27:40Highlocks
27:41with Ileana
27:42and Corey
27:44in the back
27:44in the toolbox.
27:45You have to wonder
27:50if they understood
27:51where it was going
27:53and I think a number
27:55of them did say
27:56they thought it was
27:56just a boot ride.
27:58I think that was
27:58the term they used.
28:01That the two of them,
28:03Corey and Ileana,
28:04were going to be put
28:04in the toolbox,
28:05taken for a drive
28:06and scared,
28:07you know,
28:08given the fright
28:08of their lives.
28:10Maybe they didn't
28:11fully understand
28:12where it was going.
28:14And it must have been
28:24absolutely terrifying
28:25for the two victims,
28:28concealed in a toolbox
28:29and all they could see
28:32is each other's feet.
28:33It would have been dark,
28:34it would have been hot,
28:36hard to breathe.
28:41And then knowing
28:43that they're on the back
28:44of a utility
28:46being driven
28:47to where they don't know
28:49what's going to happen
28:50to them.
28:57Well, Corey and Ileana
28:58in that toolbox
28:59and the captors
29:01who really hold
29:02their fate in their hands
29:03are driving,
29:04they've pulled down
29:05this bumpy road
29:07headed to this creek.
29:09Corey and Ileana
29:15are still begging,
29:16pleading for their lives.
29:18It must have just been
29:20awful for them.
29:26Tahiata at this point
29:27pulls out a gun
29:28and he fires a warning shot
29:29into the air
29:30hoping that this
29:31would silence them
29:32but they just screamed
29:34for their lives
29:35even more.
29:35They were being
29:42dragged out
29:43into the water
29:44in this toolbox
29:45all the while
29:46they were kicking,
29:47they were screaming
29:48for their lives,
29:49they were begging
29:49to be let out.
29:57So the toolbox
29:58hits the water
29:59but it doesn't sink.
30:00According to
30:06Torirana,
30:08Tahara,
30:09they were on top
30:10of the box
30:11hitting it with a hammer
30:13trying to get it to sink.
30:15At the time
30:16it's believed
30:17that they
30:18were still alive
30:20and pleading
30:21to be let go.
30:25They've
30:25sunk the toolbox.
30:30Trupps
30:32could hear
30:33the screaming
30:33and kicking
30:34and he says
30:35out loud
30:35time to die.
30:47Trupps
30:48clearly
30:48engaged
30:50in the process.
30:53He's
30:53crossed the
30:54Rubicon now
30:55comments like
30:56it's time to die
30:58we are the
30:58executioners.
31:00He's
31:02feeling
31:02empowered
31:03by what's
31:03going on
31:04maybe a little
31:06bit excited
31:06by what's
31:07about to
31:07happen.
31:12To try
31:13and understand
31:14what people
31:14were thinking
31:14at the time
31:15all I can
31:17describe
31:17is
31:18drugs
31:20illicit drugs
31:21specifically
31:22ice.
31:23not only
31:29does it
31:29warp
31:30people's
31:31minds
31:31it just
31:32changes
31:32people
31:34completely.
31:37My team
31:38seem to lose
31:39their
31:39sense of
31:40humanity.
31:43This is not
31:43something a
31:44normal human
31:44being does
31:45to people.
31:45there are
31:52often
31:52bizarre
31:53things that
31:54you hear
31:55about in
31:55cases like
31:56this and
31:57one of those
31:57instances was
31:58when Tahiata and
31:59Throp were
32:00there at
32:00Scrubby Creek
32:01putting the
32:03toolbox into
32:04the water.
32:05Tahiata was
32:05also in a
32:06conversation with
32:07his girlfriend
32:08about a
32:09McDonald's
32:10McFlurry
32:11and a
32:13couple of
32:13metres away
32:14from him
32:14he's just
32:16ensured
32:18two people
32:19will die.
32:23He's having
32:24a conversation
32:25with his
32:25girlfriend about
32:26Maccas and
32:28his alibi
32:29about going
32:30four-wheel
32:31driving somewhere
32:32yet not
32:33disclosing
32:33where he
32:34is.
32:37Now you'd
32:38have to
32:39think if
32:40you hear
32:40the screaming
32:41and kicking
32:41that they
32:42are still
32:42conscious
32:43obviously
32:43and yet
32:44being told
32:45time to
32:46die.
32:49To me
32:50it's
32:51barbaric
32:52inhumane
32:54and just
32:57a bad
32:58way to
32:59die.
33:03Those
33:03final moments
33:04of terror
33:05as that
33:06toolbox was
33:06sinking
33:06the water
33:07coming in
33:07investigators
33:08have said
33:08that they
33:10might have
33:10been alive
33:11for ten
33:11minutes
33:11ten minutes
33:22to face
33:25your death
33:26that's a long
33:28time
33:29that's a long
33:29time
33:30but you have
33:33to understand
33:34small-time drug
33:36dealers
33:36paranoia
33:37never sure
33:40who was
33:41your friend
33:41who was
33:41your enemy
