A rare eruption of Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi volcano, dormant for 10,000 years, has disrupted flight operations across northern India. Ash plumes carried by wind reached Rajasthan, Haryana, and may soon impact Delhi, prompting cancellations by Akasa Air, Indigo, and KLM. The DGCA issued safety directives for airlines and airports, warning of engine risks and reduced air quality. Authorities continue monitoring the volcanic ash via satellites and weather alerts, as the plume threatens both aviation safety and hazardous air pollution in the region.

00:00Flight operations across northern India were impacted on Monday because of an environmental
00:28event that occurred thousands of kilometers away in Ethiopia.
00:38Sounds unbelievable, right?
00:40But this is exactly what happened as Ethiopia's Haley Gaby volcano erupted on Sunday for the
00:47first time in over 10,000 years, sending thick plumes of smoke and ash miles into the sky.
00:58With the winds blowing eastward, the ash and smoke cloud is stretching across the Red Sea
01:04towards Yemen and Oman and is already reaching the northern and western frontiers of India.
01:12An advisory was earlier issued to deal with possible disruptions due to the ash plume,
01:18and the impact could be seen as several flights were cancelled on Monday when the smoke cloud
01:23reached parts of Rajasthan and even Haryana.
01:27Acasa Air, Indigo and KLM are among the airlines that cancelled some of their flights due to
01:34the volcanic ash problem.
01:38The Directorate General of Civil Aviation, or the DGCA, has instructed airlines to avoid
01:45ash-affected areas and adjust flight planning, routing and fuel considerations based on the
01:51latest advisories.
01:54Airlines have also been asked to immediately report any suspected ash encounter, including
02:01engine performance anomalies or cabin smoke or odor.
02:07If volcanic ash affects airport operations, then the operator must immediately inspect runways,
02:13taxiways and aprons, the DGCA said.
02:18Operators have been asked to continuously monitor the situation related to the volcanic ash cloud
02:24and stay updated through satellite imagery and meteorological data.
02:29According to the weather forecast, these plumes of smoke are likely to move over Delhi over the
02:34next few hours and could further plummet the already hazardous air quality in Delhi and its neighbouring areas.
