00:00This is the expulsion resolution that Congressman Greg Stubbe says he'll introduce against Congresswoman Sheila Chirfilis-McCormick if she doesn't resign.
00:09Federal prosecutors charge McCormick with stealing $5 million in FEMA disaster relief funds.
00:14Democrats say she's innocent until proven guilty.
00:17McCormick says she's looking forward to her day in court.
00:20Well, it's an unjust indictment, and it seems like his intimidation tactics have been pervasive.
00:24Many Republicans want her out of office now.
00:27So what's it take to expel a member, and when could she be removed?
00:32To expel McCormick, a two-thirds majority, or about 287 members, would have to vote in favor of the resolution.
00:39Since the House balance of power is 219 Republicans to 213 Democrats, it would have to be a bipartisan vote.
00:46Republicans aren't going to drop this.
00:48They'll hold Democrats' feet to the fire until they convince enough of them to hit the two-thirds majority needed to expel a member.
00:55Why?
00:55George Santos is a liar.
00:58George Santos.
00:59George Santos.
01:00Yeah, George Santos.
01:01He was accused and ultimately convicted of being a...
01:04Perpetrator of a massive fraud on his constituents and the American people.
01:10An avowed fraudster, a serial liar.
01:13Santos pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.
01:17He stole money from his campaign, lied about his campaign's fundraising, and frankly, a lot more.
01:22His seven-year prison sentence was commuted by President Trump.
01:26It's also worth noting he was removed from office about nine months before he pled guilty.
01:31Democrats were relentless in calling for him to be expelled.
01:34They publicly pressured Republicans to vote to expel him because they didn't have enough votes to do it alone.
01:40They needed about 74 Republicans to join them, and they got 105.
01:45To expel Congresswoman Chirphilis McCormick, Republicans need approximately 68 Democrats to hit a two-thirds majority.
01:53So, who were the likely targets?
01:55Well, McCormick's fellow Democrats in Florida, of course.
01:58When George Santos was expelled, New York Republicans were just as loud as Democrats in calling for his ouster because they didn't want him to hurt their party statewide.
02:06So, Republicans will likely apply pressure to Congressman Jared Muskowitz, Maxwell Alejandro Frost, and Darren Soto, to name a few.
02:14But remember, things take time in Congress.
02:16The original expulsion resolution against George Santos was filed in May 2023.
02:21It went to the Ethics Committee for an investigation, and he wasn't ousted until December.
02:26So, even if Republicans push hard on this, there's a good chance the final vote won't be until 2026.
