00:00We have faith that someone, somehow, somewhere, can help us locate our father.
00:06Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're taking a look at 10 mysteries that have baffled humans since the year 1900 that will likely never be solved.
00:14A camera shows the submarine disappearing under the water's surface.
00:19Quarter feet!
00:21The world's greatest card trick.
00:23David Berglas was a mentalist and magician who gained notoriety in the 1950s, particularly for his iconic trick known as the Berglas effect.
00:31This particular card effect is a version of a classic plot in magic called Any Card at Any Number.
00:37For this deceptively simple feat, Berglas would produce a seemingly ordinary deck and ask a spectator to name any playing card.
00:45Another person would then pick a random number from 1 to 52.
00:48By the time the cards were dealt one by one, the specified card would be found at the specified position.
00:54It's a trick that stumped and astounded other magicians for years.
00:57Which made him a legend amongst magicians and a career that spanned over six decades.
01:03However, Berglas maintained that it was unteachable, and he took the secret to his grave in 2023.
01:09This covert technique is now widely considered the holy grail of card magic.
01:14Tesla's missing papers.
01:15It's just amazing from a history standpoint, Tesla helped create the foundation of our electrical grid.
01:23History buffs may know about the rivalry between Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison in the nascent days of electrical power.
01:29But did you know that after his death in 1943, some of Tesla's research mysteriously disappeared?
01:35Tesla was allegedly working on particle beam weapons that, if successful, could have altered the outcome of World War II.
01:41The day after his death, his nephew, the Yugoslavian ambassador to the U.S., discovered that his notebook and many crucial documents were missing.
01:50As the FBI didn't trust Tesla's nephew with his sensitive research, they later confiscated all of the scientists' items.
01:56The U.S. government sat on Tesla's entire estate for 10 years.
02:01Although some of Tesla's work was returned to his family years later, a significant portion of it has never been found.
02:08Havana Syndrome
02:08It is a mysterious illness that's affected U.S. diplomats worldwide, attacking the nervous system, and in some cases, forcing people into early retirement.
02:18Since 2016, U.S. diplomats and intelligence officers from postings around the world, starting with Cuba, have reported mysterious symptoms.
02:26This combination of dizziness, headaches, and cognitive issues has since been dubbed Havana Syndrome.
02:31Soon after, diplomats and other government workers stationed around the world began experiencing similar unexplained symptoms.
02:38The true cause remains elusive.
02:40Some experts suggest mass psychogenic illness, where stress and fear manifest as physical symptoms.
02:46Others propose environmental factors like exposure to pesticides or malfunctioning surveillance equipment.
02:51A 2022 report by the director of National Intelligence offered mixed findings.
02:56It found that pulsed electromagnetic energy and ultrasound were plausible causes for some cases, while psychogenic factors could explain others.
03:04Despite extensive investigations, no definitive cause has been identified.
03:08New technology is helping us more quickly and thoroughly evaluate a variety of potential causes of these incidents, and we've distributed across posts so that we can respond rapidly to new reports.
03:19Letters of last resort
03:20This is the stuff that spy movies are made of.
03:23Belonging to the United Kingdom, the letters of last resort are exclusively written by the newly appointed prime minister.
03:30Four different letters are penned, which are then given to four submarines, equipped with destructive Trident missiles.
03:36Within the letters are instructions telling the commanding officers what to do in the event of a nuclear strike on Britain.
03:42No one but the prime minister knows the exact contents of the letters, as they're kept sealed until nuclear war breaks out.
03:49In the event that nuclear war doesn't break out, which thankfully it hasn't, the letters are destroyed upon the inauguration of a new PM.
03:57The origins of HIV-AIDS.
04:00Some nurses feared this unknown, unnamed disease so much they wouldn't even go near someone with AIDS.
04:06The fear was pervasive.
04:07While HIV is largely linked to the 1980s, it remains a global public health issue.
04:13In 2020 alone, it was estimated that nearly 40 million people were living with the disease.
04:1870% live in sub-Saharan Africa, but antiretroviral drugs offer hope.
04:25New infections are down by over a third.
04:28Mother-to-child transmission has more than halved, and globally there's been a 35% decrease in deaths.
04:34But regardless of its prevalence and very public history, there is still a lot about the retrovirus we don't know.
04:40Even those of us who were in it from day one were shocked by the enormity of the problem.
04:48For example, humanity is still mostly unsure of where it came from.
04:52The leading theory is that African hunters in the early 20th century killed and ate chimpanzees infected with SIV.
04:59The S standing for simian, which then mutated into HIV in the human body.
05:05However, this information is typically populated with words like probably and likely,
05:10indicating that the origins of HIV are not definitively known, even to this day.
05:16Metro 2
05:16You may have heard about the British shadow cabinet, but have you heard of a Russian shadow subway?
05:22Rumors have swirled for almost a century about Metro 2,
05:25a secret subway running parallel to the Moscow metro, codenamed D6 by the KGB.
05:31This clandestine network was allegedly built during the rule of Joseph Stalin.
05:35It lacks public entrances, but could be used as a shelter in the event of an aerial assault on Moscow.
05:40In times of crisis, while panicked civilians crowd onto the public metro,
05:44government officials could easily escape the city using the trains in Metro 2,
05:48which are supposedly battery-powered.
05:50Despite widespread speculation, the Russian government has never acknowledged the system's existence,
05:56nor officially released any details of its function.
06:00What happened to Jimmy Hoffa?
06:01And jubilant Jimmy Hoffa sweeps in as new president of the Teamsters.
06:05Jimmy Hoffa's disappearance is the mafia mystery that just won't die.
06:10On July 30th, 1975, the former Teamsters boss vanished from a Detroit parking lot.
06:15Was he meeting with mobsters?
06:17Did he live happily ever after?
06:19Definitely not.
06:19Tracking Hoffa's downfall takes you through a web of corruption, betrayal, and in the end, murder.
06:25Hoffa was officially declared dead in 1982, but no body was ever found.
06:30Over the years, rumors of his fate have circulated.
06:34Some claimed he was buried in one of a series of strange locations.
06:37Others say he was dissolved in acid or encased in cement.
06:40The FBI has conducted countless searches, including one as recently as 2022.
06:46So the FBI dug in the wrong place?
06:47They dug in the wrong place.
06:50They dug in the wrong place.
06:51Hoffa remains missing.
06:53With his mob ties and countless enemies, it's likely we'll never know the full truth.
06:58The USA's missile submarines.
07:00There's something about submarines and secrecy.
07:03The United States owns various missile submarines that are guided by nuclear power,
07:08including the USS Ohio, Michigan, Florida, and Georgia.
07:11Still very secret, well-guarded.
07:15It's dark, and it's massive.
07:18It's as long as the Washington Monument is high.
07:22Nearly the length of two football fields.
07:24The sail, as it's called, stretches high into the air.
07:27These are known as SSGNs.
07:29The missiles on board these subs have the potential to cause great destruction.
07:33But their whereabouts and activities are generally unknown.
07:38Unlike a surfer ship that someone can see or a satellite they don't know we're here.
07:45However, they literally surface from time to time.
07:47For example, Michigan appeared in South Korea in 2017,
07:51and Florida took part in Operation Odyssey Dawn in Libya.
07:54During the Cold War, the USS Florida prowled the oceans,
07:58equipped with Trident nuclear missiles,
08:01ready to carry out an attack at a moment's notice.
08:04On June 28, 2010, a rare event occurred,
08:07which saw three of four surfacing at once in response to Chinese missile tests.
08:12These four subs have been SSGNs since the 2000s,
08:15but most of their actions and locations have remained a secret.
08:19We won't go any further,
08:20but you're literally standing 10 to 20 feet from an operational nuclear reactor right now.
08:26Area 51
08:26Take my word for it.
08:28There's no Area 51.
08:29There's no recovered spaceship.
08:32Oh, excuse me, Mr. President.
08:35That's not entirely accurate.
08:39When it comes to highly classified areas,
08:42it doesn't get more famous than Area 51.
08:45Found in the Nevada desert,
08:46Area 51 is a top-secret military facility
08:49with ties to cutting-edge technology.
08:52The military base 80 miles from Las Vegas
08:54has become infamous for conspiracy theories about little green men.
08:58They certainly appear to still be covering up
09:00what exactly goes on at Area 51.
09:03The place is so secretive
09:05that it wasn't officially unveiled by the CIA until 2013,
09:09even though it was very obvious that something was in the desert.
09:13Area 51 is officially known as a military training facility
09:16and supposedly a testing ground for both experimental aircraft and high-tech weaponry.
09:21The Area 51 designation is said to come from Atomic Energy Commission designation maps.
09:27In the 1930s, it was a wildlife reservation under the Department of the Interior,
09:32but the War Department then took it over in 1942 during World War II.
09:37Owing to its secretive nature,
09:39both trespassing and flying over the site are grossly prohibited
09:43and dangerously enforced.
09:45Naturally, this has given rise to a swath of conspiracy theories.
09:50Are aliens inside Area 51?
09:52Perhaps we'll never know.
09:54But because of all this secrecy,
09:56many made up their own minds a long time ago about Area 51,
10:00and that's why it may never lose its extraterrestrial excitement.

10:21Bohemian Grove
10:22Bohemian Grove is a compound sitting on a massive 2,700-acre slice of California redwood country.
10:28It's a gentleman's club of sorts,
10:30catering to the conservative elites of American society.
10:33Its membership includes almost every Republican president since Calvin Coolidge,
10:37other politicians,
10:39as well as some of the wealthiest business leaders in modern history.
10:42For over 150 years,
10:44elites have flocked to Bohemian Grove on semi-secret retreats,
10:48which typically take place in mid-July every year,
10:51for about two weeks.
10:52Few know what they do there,
10:54though rumors of their Bacchanalia-esque revelries abound.
10:57What we do know is that there is a reasonable likelihood
11:00that many of the world's historical events may have been shaped
11:03within the confines of the Bohemian Grove.
