00:00When the screen suddenly went black, then came back on with a new unruly presence,
00:05a man wearing a Max Headroom mask.
00:09Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at the strangest and most unsettling mysteries
00:13throughout history. Whether it's an unsolved murder, disappearance, cryptic text, or something
00:17even more chilling, all of these remain unsolved today.
00:20At a loss, doctors dub the mysterious illness Havana Syndrome.
00:24It all began in 1971, when a woman claimed that a person's face appeared on her floor.
00:35Her family destroyed the image, thinking it would help.
00:44It returned shortly after, earning the attention of the authorities.
00:48Since then, the owners have claimed that more faces continue to pop up,
00:52and their home in Benmeth has become a tourist site.
00:55Those who visit are treated to a plethora of disfigured faces,
00:58subjecting them to the uncanny valley.
01:00Is this the work of ghosts, or merely a mass case of pareidolia?
01:04Several investigations have taken place, attempting to prove that they were created by hand.
01:09These strange faces remain an unexplained phenomenon,
01:12until we get more concrete proof.
01:15Others are convinced that they're proof of a decades-long paranormal event.
01:18You can travel there and see for yourself, if you dare.

01:23The Disappearance of Frederick Valentich
01:25What started as routine training ended in pure horror.
01:29Frederick Valentich was both an aspiring pilot and a believer in life beyond the stars.
01:33When 20-year-old pilot Frederick Valentich
01:36flies the straight in a Cessna 182L and encounters something in the sky.
01:43During a late flight to King Island in 1978,
01:46he alerted air control that there was another craft flying above him.
01:49He described it as large with several bright lights on it, and that it was following him.
01:54The last thing he said before contact was lost was that it wasn't a regular plane.
01:58A search was conducted afterward, but he was never found.
02:01Frederick Valentich has been missing now for 46 years, and yet we are still talking about him.
02:07There are plenty of believers who are adamant that Valentich was abducted that night,
02:11while those who work in the field assert that he simply became confused or staged the scene himself.
02:16Number 28. The Lead Masks Case
02:19There are some deaths that, while seemingly far-fetched, are still explainable.
02:24This was definitely not one of those cases.
02:27In 1966, the corpses of two men were found side by side.
02:31Manuel Pereira da Cruz and Miguel Joseviana matched in every aspect,
02:35from their fancy outfits and lead eye masks to the lack of any physical trauma.
02:40Near them was a set of cryptic instructions, but even that didn't help shed light on their predicament.
02:44To make things more confusing, an autopsy wasn't held for weeks,
02:48making it impossible to tell how they had passed.
02:50This has resulted in a series of unprovable assertions,
02:53ranging from foul play to an accidental overdose while searching for non-human life.
02:58Number 27. The Disappearance of the Sodder Children
03:01When a fire broke out on Christmas Eve, the victims had no idea just how much their lives would change.
03:07George and Jenny Sodder were able to escape with four of their nine children living with them,
03:11but the other five vanished. The parents asserted that foul play was at hand.
03:16They spent years searching, putting up billboards, and offering thousands of dollars for information.
03:20In 1967, an apparent photo of their son Louis was sent to them, but even that led to dead ends.
03:26George and Jenny passed decades ago, but their remaining relatives continue to look.
03:31Those most invested believe they were taken by the Sicilian mob,
03:34while others believe they sadly passed that fateful night in 1945.
03:39Number 26. The Flannan Isles Lighthouse
03:41When a ship sailed past the Flannan Isles in 1900 without a single light despite the poor weather,
03:47they knew something was wrong.
03:49A rescue team reached the island days later, shocked by their discovery.
03:52When he opened the door, Moore realized at once that something was terribly wrong.
03:57There was no sign of the three men manning the lighthouse,
04:00James Ducat, Thomas Marshall, and Donald MacArthur.
04:03But there was evidence indicating they had been there, most notably their unmade beds.
04:08None of the three men was able to be found.
04:10While many believed they had accidentally tumbled over the side of the cliff,
04:14others had alternate ideas.
04:15Everything from a sea monster to a band of vengeful ghosts was suggested.
04:19With no sign of them dead or alive since that fateful night,
04:22it may be a mystery that's never fully solved.
04:25Number 25. The Fate of Jimmy Hoffa
04:28As the leader of the Teamsters' labor union,
04:30he made powerful friends and even more powerful enemies.
04:34Jimmy Hoffa was kind of a force of nature.
04:36It's something that really kind of caught all of our imagination.
04:39He was such a large figure.
04:42Everybody knew about Jimmy Hoffa.
04:44After a brief stint in prison that led to Jimmy Hoffa losing his role,
04:47he attempted to regain it.
04:49On July 30th, 1975, he left for a meeting and never returned.
04:53A missing person report was filed and a six-figure reward was offered,
04:57but no one came forward.
04:59In 2004, it was alleged that Hoffa's former friend Frank Sheeran was behind it.
05:03Those claims, along with those stating his remains were buried beneath Giant Stadium,
05:08have been widely deemed false.
05:09We may never know the truth behind Hoffa's fate,
05:12but to this day, it remains one of the most unsettling mysteries in American history.
05:17I wish somehow we could find out what happened to Jimmy Hoffa.
05:21In 1948, reports of a strange man washed up near Somerton, South Australia,
05:28spread like wildfire.
05:30Since then, he has remained at the center of an ongoing mystery.
05:33And this is where he met his end?
05:35Right here.
05:36And to take your secrets with you.
05:38An autopsy was held, and while there was some damage done to the internal organs,
05:42there was no unnatural substance found inside him.
05:45His bag was later discovered, but the contents did not help identify him.
05:49Among the findings they'd come across,
05:51the most unsettling was an undecipherable code and a small sheet of paper,
05:55simply reading Temam Shud, or ended in Persian.
05:58In 2022, his identity was tentatively confirmed as Carl Webb.
06:03We managed to extract enough DNA from one of the summited man's hairs.
06:09And from that DNA, we were able to then find a distant cousin that is still alive.
06:15That cousin turned out to be on the paternal side of Charles Webb.
06:21Though we may know who he is, it's still unknown how he came to pass,
06:25and whether it was by his own hand or someone else's.
06:28Number 23.
06:29The Beast of Gévaudan
06:31What would you do if you were suddenly faced with a monster you'd never seen before?
06:35The citizens of Gévaudan learned firsthand when they became victims of animals they'd never seen before.
06:40Le Bête du Gévaudan, also known as the Beast of Gévaudan,
06:43was a mysterious wolf-like creature which mounted a murderous rampage
06:48over a three-year span within the 18th century.
06:52Described as being dark brown and striped with long tails,
06:55they were unlike anything observed there before.
06:57Though sources vary,
06:58it's believed that dozens of people met their grisly ends from 1764 to 1767.
07:04What species terrorized them is still debated.
07:07Though a wolf seems to be the most logical answer,
07:10its description causes that theory to fall flat.
07:12This has led others to speculate it was a hyena or even a lion.
07:16Among the many hypotheses that emerged was that the beast might be an African hyena.
07:22The hyena was this very mysterious creature
07:25that lots of naturalists and others wrote about in the 1750s and 60s.
07:30Its reported lack of fear around most humans,
07:33aggressive daytime attack, and sheer agility have also added to the debate.
07:38Number 22.
07:39The Disappearance of Flight 19
07:41In 1945, a crew of five American planes left Fort Lauderdale for training and were never seen again.
07:4727 U.S. Navy sailors lost their lives.
07:53They disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle.
07:55And there has still never been an adequate explanation for what happened to them.
08:00The night they disappeared,
08:01their planes were fueled and their lead pilot was in contact with air traffic control.
08:06He grew more confused the longer they remained airborne,
08:09before ceasing communication with one last message about how they would go down together.
08:13They eventually did,
08:14but neither the crafts nor the men inside were found.
08:17Many believe the pilot was merely confused after his compass stopped working.
08:21Taylor, who was the flight lead, was talking about the compass didn't look right.
08:25He started to get confused.
08:26Don't they know they have to get back?
08:28Taylor thought that they needed to fly to the northeast
08:31because he thought they were over the Florida Keys.
08:33Others are convinced that he and his crew fell victim to the Bermuda Triangle
08:36and that it had a hand in their eventual demise.
08:39The truth may be somewhere in the middle, but we may never know for sure.
08:44Number 21.
08:45The Dyatlov Pass Tragedy
08:46In January of 1959, a group of nine hikers left and never came back.
08:51It wasn't until February that they were found and the horror truly began.
08:55When rescuers arrive on scene at the Dyatlov Pass weeks after the incident,
08:59the first thing they discover is the group's empty tent and cold weather gear.
09:04Their tent was cut from the inside and their winter clothes were left behind in a hurry.
09:09At first, it was believed they had passed from hypothermia.
09:12It wasn't until a further investigation was conducted
09:15and three of them were found with skull or chest damage that the narrative began to shift.
09:19Things went from bad to worse when others were found without their tongue or eyes.
09:23The theories range from sudden natural events to stumbling into a military testing area.
09:28It remains one of the largest global mysteries of all time,
09:32with the answer remaining out of reach.
09:34Do you think that this case can ever truly be solved?
09:37I think if we can get real cooperation from the authorities, we may finally get answers.
09:43Number 20.
09:44Bimini Road
09:44Just off the coast of North Bimini Island in the Bahamas lies a half a mile underwater path
09:50made up of large rectangular limestone blocks.
09:52The Bimini Road has inspired fascination since the 1960s.
09:57Due to the unusual precision and regularity of the blocks,
10:00many have questioned its natural formation.
10:03One popular theory suggests that it could be a long-lost road to Atlantis.
10:07Conditions are near perfect.
10:09The team are able to examine what actually lies beneath this fascinating structure.
10:14It seems like there are two layers to some of the road.
10:18Further lending credence to this theory is the fact that about 30 years before it was discovered,
10:23American clairvoyant Edgar Cayce talked about a road to Atlantis being discovered near Bimini.
10:28Geologists argue that it is a naturally occurring formation,
10:32but there are still some in the scientific community who dispute that.
10:35As such, the true origin of the Bimini Road remains a captivating enigma.
10:40I don't think anybody can dive in Bimini and not believe that these are man-made artifacts.
10:45Number 19.
10:46The Jameson Family Deaths.
10:48In October 2009, Bobby Jameson, his wife Cheryl Lynn, and their daughter Madison
10:53disappeared from their hometown of Eufaula, Oklahoma under mysterious circumstances.
10:57But when relatives discovered they hadn't returned after four days, they started to panic.
11:03A few days later, authorities found their abandoned truck in a remote location,
11:07but no signs of the family.
11:09Discovered in the truck were the Jameson's malnourished dog,
11:12their phones and IDs, and a large amount of cash.
11:15Police also retrieved security footage from their home,
11:18showing the couple loading up their truck in an eerily silent and strange manner.
11:22It took them an extremely long time to load the truck.
11:26They made 30, 40 trips, it seemed like.
11:29Multiple theories have been put forward,
11:31including a faked death situation and a drug deal gone awry,
11:35but none has been substantiated.
11:37The family's remains were discovered four years later,
11:40but the true circumstances around their disappearance and death remain a mystery.
11:44I do think that they must have seen something they shouldn't have seen,
11:49because nothing else makes sense.
11:52Number 18.
11:54The Strange Disappearance of Paula Jean Weldon.
11:56Paula Jean Weldon, a sophomore at Bennington College in Vermont,
12:00disappeared on December 1st, 1946, while hiking on Vermont's Long Trail.
12:04She was reported missing by her roommate after failing to return to her room.
12:09Multiple people spotted her along the trail, including other hikers.
12:13Yet she seemingly vanished without a trace.
12:16An extensive search was launched afterwards,
12:18with her school even shutting down for days to allow staff and students to participate.
12:23The investigation into Weldon's disappearance was,
12:26however, hampered by the fact that there was no statewide police in Vermont at the time.
12:30Till today, no one knows what happened to Weldon,
12:33but the case led to the creation of the Vermont State Police the following year.
12:38Number 17.
12:39The Curious Case of Mary Reeser.
12:42Throughout history, there have been multiple reported cases of spontaneous human combustion,
12:47but perhaps none has gained more attention than that of Mary Reeser.
12:51On July 2nd, 1951, Reeser was discovered almost completely incinerated in her St. Petersburg, Florida apartment.
12:59All that was left of her were a couple of bone fragments and her left foot.
13:02Mysteriously, the rest of her apartment was largely undisturbed,
13:06with only a few nearby items affected by the heat.
13:09This inexplicable level of destruction puzzled investigators,
13:13leading to the rise of the theory of spontaneous human combustion.
13:17However, the FBI argued that the fire was ignited by a cigarette Reeser was smoking,
13:22with her body fat and nightgown acting as fuel for the fire.
13:26Number 16.
13:27The Mysterious Fate of the USS Cyclops.
13:30It's quite a strange occurrence for the largest ship in the U.S. Navy to just disappear without a trace.
13:35But that was indeed what happened during World War I when the USS Cyclops departed Brazil for Baltimore.
13:41One day out of port, she enters some of the deepest waters in the Bermuda Triangle area and simply disappears.
13:51The 542-foot-long collier, which was transporting tons of manganese ore,
13:56vanished alongside the 306 persons on board.
13:59It was initially believed that the vessel was sunk in an attack by the Germans,
14:04but they have maintained no knowledge or involvement in its fate.
14:07There was a Washington, D.C. newspaper that claimed that she had been taken over
14:13and had been turned into a pirate ship.
14:15Since then, one lingering theory is that the USS Cyclops must have fallen prey to the infamous Bermuda Triangle.
14:21More than a century later, the disappearance remains unsolved,
14:25eluding the mind of anyone who contemplates the fate of the USS Cyclops.
14:29So did the Triangle's turbulent seas produce a freak wave large enough to sink the Cyclops?
14:37Number 15. The Oakville Blobs
14:40In the summer of 1994, residents of the small town of Oakville, Washington,
14:44woke up to find tiny blobs that seemed to have rained down from the sky.
14:48No one was really concerned until they realized that it wasn't raining rain.
14:55It was raining tiny blobs of gelatinous goo.
14:58These translucent, gelatinous substances were described as being half the size of a grain of rice.
15:04As strange as they were, what made them particularly creepy were the bizarre effects they seemed to have on the town.
15:10Residents experienced flu-like symptoms and respiratory infections,
15:14and some animals were said to have died.
15:16I got sick, my wife got sick, my daughter, everybody that lived here got sick.
15:21Upon testing, the blobs were found to contain two species of bacteria,
15:25although both are usually known to be harmless.
15:29Multiple theories have since been suggested,
15:31but no definitive conclusion has been reached as to the origins of the Oakville Blobs.
15:35Maybe we were a biological experiment of some kind, a small one, maybe just get people a little bit sick.
15:41Number 14. The Pollock Sisters
15:43The idea of reincarnation has long been heavily debated,
15:47and some proponents tout this case as evidence for it.
15:50In May 1957, two sisters, Joanna and Jacqueline Pollock, lost their lives in a car accident.
15:57The following year, the parents welcomed twin girls Jillian and Jennifer,
16:01despite only one heartbeat being detected during the pregnancy.
16:04These twins shared many similarities with their deceased sisters,
16:08including birthmarks, preferences, and behaviors.
16:10They also seemed to recollect memories only their sisters knew,
16:15and developed a strange fear of cats.
16:18The girls were profiled by a professor of psychiatry as an example of reincarnation,
16:22but many have dismissed the case as a hoax,
16:25arguing that the family simply fed the past memories to the twins.
16:29Number 13. The Overton Bridge
16:31Located near Dumbarton in Scotland,
16:34the Overton Bridge was constructed in 1895.
16:36What makes this seemingly ordinary bridge so creepy
16:40is the inexplicable phenomenon of dogs leaping to their deaths from it.
16:48It's been reported that since the 1950s,
16:51about 600 dogs have jumped off this bridge,
16:54seemingly for no reason,
16:56with some of them suffering fatal injuries.
16:58Some local residents believe that the structure,
17:01and the Overton house that it leads to,
17:03are haunted by spirits who call out to the dogs.
17:05They're being, in a sense,
17:06lured to the edge of the bridge walls by this figure.
17:09Another possible explanation suggests
17:12that the canines are attracted to the smell of certain animals underneath the bridge.
17:16With no definitive cause found yet,
17:18we'll advise just keeping your dogs off this bridge.
17:22Could some overpowering smell at the bottom of the bridge be driving dogs to jump?
17:27Number 12. The Toynbee Tiles
17:29Located in several cities across North and South America,
17:33The Toynbee Tiles are a series of linoleum blocks
17:36embedded in the asphalt of seemingly random streets.
17:39It was this tile, like a floor tile or whatever,
17:43embedded in the asphalt in the crosswalk that bears this message on it.
17:48These enigmatic tiles contain cryptic messages that often refer to death,
17:52and have confounded people since they began popping up in the 1980s.
17:56They take their name from their usual inscription found on them,
17:59which is believed to be a reference to the British historian Arnold J. Toynbee.
18:03The Toynbee referenced is almost definitely the historian Arnold Toynbee.
18:09Who installed these tiles,
18:11how they were able to achieve that without detection,
18:13and what they actually mean still remain a mystery to this day.
18:18The peculiar nature of the tiles and their random placements have sparked numerous theories,
18:22some of which were addressed in a 2011 documentary film.
18:27I would walk over the tiles over and over and over and over again,
18:29so I would think about them every single day,
18:31and, you know, I would just constantly think, like,
18:34I wonder how long they've been there, I wonder what they mean.
18:36Number 11. The Circleville Letters
18:38Beginning in the late 1970s,
18:40an unknown individual reigned terror on the residents of Circleville, Ohio.
18:45This still unidentified figure began sending out threatening letters
18:48that exposed alleged secrets of the town's residents.
18:51The first target of the letters was the bus driver,
18:54a woman named Mary Gillespie,
18:56who was alleged to have had an affair with the local school superintendent.
19:00In addition to allegations of an affair,
19:02the letter carried an ominous threat.
19:05Gillespie's husband, Ron, was also targeted.
19:08In the following year, he died in a mysterious accident
19:10after receiving a call from someone believed to be the letter writer.
19:14Somewhere in between leaving the house and hitting that tree,
19:17his gun, had fired one shot.
19:20Ron's brother-in-law was eventually named as the writer
19:23and sent to prison for attempting to murder Gillespie.
19:26But the letters continued.
19:28To date, no one knows for sure who was behind the Circleville letters.
19:32Paul Freshour was finally granted parole after serving 10 years.
19:37To this day, he maintains his innocence,
19:39and he's sure that the real criminal is still at large.
19:43Number 10. The Severed Feet Mystery
19:45It'll probably not make headlines if one human foot washes up ashore.
19:50But when 21 feet, usually still wearing sneakers,
19:54are found on the shores of the same sea,
19:56it is sure to raise a few eyebrows.
19:59The first discovery was made in August 2007 in British Columbia, Canada,
20:03with some others found in multiple towns in the U.S. state of Washington.
20:06It's the 13th foot found in British Columbia since 2007.
20:10Some of the feet have since been linked to people
20:12who were either declared missing or had mental health issues.
20:15It's been posited that the occurrence of the severed limbs
20:18is due to a combination of body decomposition
20:20and the buoyancy of New Age sneakers.
20:23Regardless, questions still linger about why this seems to only occur in this particular sea.
20:29Without much to work with,
20:30DNA and the brand and manufacturing date of the shoes
20:34are the best clues investigators have in what is a growing mystery.
20:38Number 9. The Unexplained Phoenix Lights
20:41On March 13, 1997,
20:44thousands of people in Arizona and Nevada
20:46reported seeing a series of lights appear in the sky.
20:49They were white like stars when they were coming towards us.
20:52These lights were arranged in a V formation
20:54and spanned a vast area,
20:56silently moving across the cities.
20:58The phenomenon was observed for about three hours that night,
21:02with some people taking pictures and videos.
21:04The official explanation given by the authorities
21:07was that the lights belonged to military aircraft
21:09that were engaged in training exercises.
21:12But this was met with a lot of skepticism.
21:15I've seen them from the ground,
21:16I've seen them from the air,
21:18and these weren't flares.
21:20Even the then governor of Arizona,
21:23Fife Symington,
21:24who was a pilot himself,
21:25described the event as, quote,
21:27otherworldly.
21:28It remains one of the most notable
21:30and perplexing UFO events in modern history.
21:34Did the phoenix lights come from somewhere beyond the stars?
21:38Number 8.
21:39The Mysterious Sleeping Sickness
21:41Throughout history,
21:42there have been multiple pandemics
21:44that have brought the entire world to a standstill.
21:47One of the least known ones
21:48is the sleeping sickness pandemic
21:50of the early 20th century.
21:52Between 1915 and 1926,
21:55around the same time the influenza pandemic
21:57ravaged the world,
21:58a sleeping disease claimed the lives
22:00of more than 500,000 people.
22:02Known scientifically as Encephalitis Lethargica,
22:05this disease left sufferers
22:07in a statue-like condition,
22:08unable to speak or move their bodies.
22:11In fact,
22:12some patients who survived the pandemic
22:14reportedly never regained full control
22:16of their motor functions.
22:17Although the disease mysteriously disappeared
22:20in 1927,
22:21scientists remain puzzled
22:23over its origin and cause,
22:25as well as how it can be transmitted.
22:27Number 7.
22:28The Havana Syndrome
22:29Starting sometime in 2016,
22:32diplomatic personnel in Cuba
22:33began to experience
22:34a weird range of health problems
22:36such as memory loss,
22:37hearing loss,
22:38and nausea.
22:39Doctors said that diplomats' brain matter
22:41had actually changed.
22:43What started out as a mysterious nuisance
22:45became a suspected instrument of attack.
22:49Follow-up studies found
22:50that there was evidence of brain injuries.
22:53However, when questioned,
22:54the victims said that they'd heard
22:55a strange noise like a grating sound
22:57or marbles rolling on the floor,
22:59although others nearby did not hear this.
23:01A source says starting last December,
23:03the U.S. officials were exposed
23:05to a sonic device,
23:07which experts suggest
23:08could produce sound waves
23:10below and above human hearing,
23:12which could cause these symptoms.
23:14Quasi-unusual,
23:15but when recordings of the sound
23:17were captured,
23:18the closest thing researchers could find
23:19were Jamaican field crickets,
23:21which are harmless.
23:22The recording is just one
23:26of the many sounds taken in Cuba
23:28that led investigators
23:29to initially believe
23:30it was a sonic weapon.
23:32No cause has been found,
23:33and theories range
23:34from microwave weapons
23:35to pesticides.
23:36Who or what caused it?
23:38A mystery.
23:39The United States government
23:40is still not sure
23:42who or what is responsible
23:44for those health attacks.
23:45Number six,
23:46the ghost blimp.
23:48Picture it.
23:491942 off the coast of California.
23:51Two U.S. Navy pilots
23:53command the Navy's L-8 blimp
23:54in search of Japanese submarines
23:56in waters not so far
23:57from San Francisco.
23:58There were known
23:59to be Japanese submarines
24:00operating off the coast.
24:02There had been an attack
24:03on an oil refinery
24:05down near Santa Monica,
24:07Los Angeles.
24:09There was a great fear
24:11that there would be more attacks.
24:13They radio flight control
24:15about an oil slick on the water
24:16and are never heard from again.
24:19A few hours later,
24:20that very same L-8 blimp
24:21crashes into a cliff
24:22with no one on board.
24:24Everything in or about the craft
24:26was working normally,
24:27the throttles were idle
24:29and more eerily,
24:30the parachutes and lifeboat
24:31were still on board.
24:33To this day,
24:34no one knows what happened
24:35and the personnel involved
24:36were never found.
24:38Number five,
24:39the Ourang Medan.
24:40In 1947,
24:42American vessels picked up
24:43an SOS call
24:44from a Dutch vessel,
24:45the SS Ourang Medan.
24:46The message was a chilling one.
24:48SOS from Ourang Medan.
24:50We float.
24:51Probably whole of crew dead.
24:53I die.
24:55Finding the ship
24:56also meant finding corpses
24:57with gaping eyes and mouths.
24:59Soon after,
25:00while under tow,
25:00the ship caught fire
25:01and exploded.
25:02Stranger still,
25:13there are apparently
25:14no registration records
25:15for the ship,
25:16while the Coast Guard
25:17didn't report the story
25:18until the mid-50s.
25:19Theories tend to focus
25:20on government cover-ups
25:21due to possible
25:22chemical weapons on board.
25:24This story even served
25:25as the basis
25:25for the 2019 video game
25:27The Dark Pictures Anthology,
25:28The Man of Medan.
25:30Number four,
25:31the Tunguska event.
25:33On the morning
25:33of June 30th, 1908,
25:35a large explosion
25:36blasted the area
25:37near the Tunguska River
25:38in Russia,
25:39flattening some 80 million trees
25:41over some 800 square miles
25:43of forest.
25:44Millions of pine trees,
25:45larches, and birches
25:46are destroyed
25:47by the pressure wave
25:48and the fires.
25:51A shock wave circles the world,
25:53leaving its mark
25:54on seismographs everywhere.
25:56But no one can understand
25:58where it has come from.
25:59For years,
26:00scientists debated
26:01what could have caused
26:02such an explosion.
26:04Shockwaves rippled
26:05across Europe.
26:06The night sky
26:07was illuminated
26:09for weeks after
26:11and people were able
26:12to read their newspapers
26:13in the middle of the night
26:14from London to Asia.
26:16It's classified
26:17as the largest impact event
26:19ever recorded,
26:20but no impact crater
26:21was ever found.
26:22Instead,
26:23researchers found
26:24five miles of scorched trees
26:26directly in the center
26:27that were somehow
26:28still standing.
26:29In 2013, however,
26:31a team from
26:32the National Academy
26:33of Sciences of Ukraine
26:34analyzed rock samples
26:35from the site
26:36and concluded
26:36it was likely a meteor
26:38exploding in midair.
26:39Researchers studied
26:40microscopic fragments
26:41of decayed vegetation
26:42dating back
26:43to the time of the event
26:44and discovered
26:45mineral combinations
26:46perfectly consistent
26:47with other meteorite
26:48impact sites,
26:49like the 50,000-year-old
26:50meteor crater
26:50in Arizona.
26:51Number 3.
26:52The Bay of Jars
26:54Brazil's Guanabara Bay
26:55contains a lot of trash,
26:57but the trash
26:58that people cannot explain
26:59is the 200 or so
27:00Roman ceramic jars
27:01found submerged
27:02in an underwater field,
27:04an underwater field
27:05the size of
27:05three tennis courts.
27:07According to experts,
27:08these jars trace
27:09back to the 3rd century.
27:11However,
27:11European explorers
27:12didn't even reach
27:13Brazil until 1500,
27:15and the Romans themselves
27:16had little to no incentive
27:18to travel that far out.
27:19Thus,
27:19it's a complete mystery
27:20why their artifacts
27:21would be found there.
27:23Meanwhile,
27:23Brazil closed off
27:24the area in 1983,
27:26so it's unlikely
27:27an answer will ever
27:28be found.
27:29Number 2.
27:30The Voynich Manuscript
27:31If you haven't heard
27:32of this one,
27:33strap in.
27:34The Voynich Manuscript
27:35is a mysterious
27:36250-page book
27:38written in a
27:38completely unknown language
27:40and containing
27:41odd, otherworldly sketches.
27:43There are theories
27:44that the book
27:45might have been written
27:45in a kind of
27:46encoded Latin,
27:47or that an alien
27:50wrote it
27:50while being held
27:51captive in a monastery.
27:52or that Leonardo da Vinci
27:55wrote it as a child.
27:56Its origin
27:57is unable to be
27:58fully traced,
27:59so no one knows
28:00who created it,
28:01let alone why,
28:02but carbon dating
28:03puts it in the
28:03early 15th century.
28:05Cryptologists say
28:06the writing has all
28:06the characteristics
28:07of a real language,
28:09just one that
28:09no one's ever seen before.
28:11What makes it seem real
28:12is that in actual languages,
28:15letters and groups
28:15of letters
28:16appear with
28:17consistent frequencies,
28:18and the language
28:19in the Voynich manuscript
28:20has patterns
28:21you wouldn't find
28:22from a random
28:22letter generator.
28:24So far,
28:24no one has been able
28:25to decode the script
28:26it's written in,
28:27despite being worked on
28:28by professional
28:29code breakers
28:30from both World War I
28:31and World War II.
28:33What strange message
28:34lies inside this
28:35uncrackable book?
28:36The truth is,
28:37after decades
28:38of dedicated study
28:39to try and solve
28:40the mystery,
28:41this strange book
28:42seems likely to remain
28:43one of our most
28:44enduring historical codes
28:46to crack.

29:03Number 1.
29:04The Max Headroom Hijack
29:06In 1987,
29:08two television stations
29:09in Chicago
29:09were hijacked
29:10in perhaps the most
29:12surreal act of video piracy
29:13ever recorded.
29:15Take some pretty
29:15significant
29:16equipment,
29:18technical equipment
29:19and some knowledge
29:19of broadcast frequencies,
29:22microwave frequencies
29:22and a lot of power.
29:25Both instances
29:26featured an unidentified man
29:27dressed as obscure
29:28TV personality
29:29Max Headroom
29:30dancing to distorted audio.
29:32The second video,
29:33significantly longer,
29:34saw the man rambling
29:35incoherently
29:36in a distorted voice
29:37and being swatted
29:38on the behind
29:39by an off-screen accomplice.
29:40The segments lasted no more
29:57than a couple of minutes,
29:58but have gone down
29:59as among the most notorious
30:00incidents in television history.
30:03No one has ever identified
30:04who pulled it off
30:05or even why.
30:06We can only hope
30:07someone comes forward
30:08after all this time
30:09to put an end
30:10to this mystery.
30:11Do you know of any
30:22little-known creepy mysteries?
30:24Share them in the comments.
30:25The story is,
30:27it's sad,
30:28it's tragic,
30:29it's macabre,
30:30but there's something
30:31really mysterious about it.
30:34And the more you read,
30:35the weirder it gets.
