00:00We are back, and it's the last of our heats here at base camp in Gormanstown, County Mead.
00:10Heat 3, bring it on!
00:17Over eight grueling weeks, our families will go head-to-head in a series of events designed to push them to their limits.
00:25From the tough terrain of an army training camp, through the sticky swamps of hell and back, and the deep icy waters of Drada Porte.
00:34It will all come down to these ramps in our grand final in spectacular Avondale in County Wicklow,
00:40where one family will rise to the top and grab that €15,000 cash prize and the title of Ireland's fittest family 2025.
00:55Tonight, it's the third heat of this year's competition.
01:02In the first heat, newbie coach, GAA star Michael Dara McCauley left Anna Geary for dust as he got both his families through.
01:11I'm absolutely buzzing.
01:11Leaving Anna with only one family going forward.
01:14However, you only need one twin.
01:17In heat 2, rugby star Andrew Trimble took on former Ireland teammate Donika O'Callaghan and came out on top.
01:24I'm delighted.
01:25You know, it's 2-0, Trimble O'Callaghan.
01:28Securing places for his two families, leaving Donika with just one.
01:33You can't afford a mistake, and I'm having too many at the moment.
01:36This week, it's the turn of four-time fittest family winner Davy Fitz,
01:41who will go head-to-head with Paralympic swimming champion Ellen Keane.
01:45Having retired from high-performance sport.
01:50Keane's looking good.
01:52Is she going to hold on for the victory?
01:54Yes, she does.
01:54Goal for Ireland!
01:57This is a great next step for me because I have all this knowledge.
02:00When we see her represent in Ireland, you know she always gives it her all.
02:04Well, she's going to need to bring her all now.
02:06Taking on Davy.
02:07And knowing how competitive she is, we're probably going to have a bit of head-to-head fire here, and that's good.
02:13I think we're a bit like chalk and cheese.
02:15I like to be cool, calm, and collected, and communicate well, whereas it appears Davy doesn't do that.
02:20He just likes to scream and shout and throw his toys out of the pram.
02:25She'll expect a lot of noise, and that's our thing.
02:27And I think that's where Davy will fall down.
02:29I don't really mind.
02:30Whatever Ellen thinks about me, that's fine.
02:32If I had any tip for Ellen, I would say, don't listen to a word, Davy says.
02:38Each coach has two families in tonight's competition.
02:41Davy has the Smits from Louth and the McDonners from Mayo.
02:46Ellen has the Stewards from Dublin and the Barnables from Tipperary.
02:55Davy, here we go again.
02:56Another series of Ireland for this family.
02:58Yeah, I can't wait.
02:59Season 13, we're off.
03:00Ready to go.
03:01Ready to rock.
03:02We've got some new coaches as well this year, and actually, has anybody seen Ellen?
03:06She's a bit.
03:07Like, we're nearly ready to go.
03:11I'll go with it.
03:12Nice to see you.
03:13Yeah.
03:14A bit late.
03:15I'm all right on time.
03:16Did you swim here?
03:17Of course I did.
03:18Hi.
03:19How did you guys get here?
03:20Welcome to Ireland's Fittance Family.
03:22You are so welcome to be here.
03:24We're delighted to have you joining the gang, even if you are putting the rest of us a shame.
03:27How are you feeling about today?
03:29Oh, I'm so excited.
03:30Ready to go.
03:31Yeah.
03:31This is great.
03:32You're here.
03:33But this is serious, because you've got some unbelievable families, and you have to coach
03:37them to greatness, up against Davy Fitz, who has won Ireland's Fittance Family four times.
03:43That's right.
03:44Well, Davy's been making TV shows.
03:45I've been winning medals, so I'm ready to go.
03:47I am already very excited to see how this all works, but go meet your families.
03:53Best of luck, and I'll see you at the first event, all right?
03:55Tonight, all families will compete in two events, Box to the Top and Hall or Nothing.
04:08Box to the Top will have two heats, both with one family from each coach going head-to-head.
04:13The losing family will be given a 20-second time penalty for the second event.
04:18The two families with the best adjusted times in Hall or Nothing will go straight through
04:22to the quarterfinals.
04:24The slowest families will battle it out in our army eliminator for the remaining place in
04:29the quarterfinals.
04:30First up, we have Davy and the Smiths from Louth.
04:35We constantly watch the show as a family.
04:37It's a big opportunity for us to go in here and show everyone what we're made of.
04:40If you're all a competitive, Prashan is out to win.
04:42He is the one that'll pull you along and give you the most motivation.
04:46I think Adam's the biggest sore loser.
04:48It doesn't like when someone gets the better of him.
04:50Throw a tantrum when something doesn't go his way.
04:52My ex-husband secret weapon.
04:54He is the one that'll probably be pulling me over walls and stuff like that.
04:57He was very encouraging.
04:58Our mom was a hell of a lot for us.
05:00I just want to get it started now.
05:01Let's get going.
05:03Next up, it's Ellen and the Stuarts from Dublin.
05:06So I was the one who entered the family.
05:08We've always watched the series, looked forward to it on a Sunday night, so I figured why not.
05:13Law is a very good organiser, a bit of a perfectionist.
05:16My motivation is to have a great family experience together.
05:20Owen is very sporty, very competitive and constantly looking for the next challenge.
05:24I grew up playing sport all the time, probably playing too many sports.
05:27Alicia is super duper competitive.
05:30She's fast and I'd say she'll be able to get up, like, the wall and the ramp.
05:34Liam is a natural sports man.
05:36He's very good at GA, hurling.
05:38He just enjoys it.
05:39Yeah, he'd definitely, like, go for it and put it all in.
05:41We won't give up.
05:42We'll do our best.
05:43We'll keep going.
05:44And we've got good team sport.
05:47Yay!
05:55Now, in our first head-to-head event, our families are going to have to get this box all the way to the top over there.
06:01With just a few sandbags thrown in.
06:03How hard can it actually be?
06:04Tonight, members of the Irish Defence Forces will demonstrate this test of strength, strategy and stamina.
06:11One person from each family starts the race standing on an army kit box in the sea.
06:15On the sound of the horn, they must jump off the box, pick it up and run with it to their remaining family members.
06:22With the family are four 15kg sandbags.
06:26Between them, they must carry the sandbags and the box through the rest of the course.
06:30Next, it's a 200m run broken up by crawl through two army camo nets.
06:35Once through them, it's a run up a hill and onto a platform.
06:38The sandbags have to be placed inside the box and the lid closed.
06:41When all the family members are on the platform, they go down a ladder and up a wall.
06:46Finally, it's a run up a steep bank.
06:48When all four family members are standing at the top of the bank, they win the race.
06:51The losing family will carry a 20-second time penalty into the next event.
07:05So I have the Smith family today.
07:06Cathy, definitely the driving force behind this family.
07:09Incredible lady.
07:10Fit and good shape.
07:12I feel very nervous but excited.
07:14It's a big challenge.
07:17The boys will, all three of them, will be well suited to it.
07:19Adam definitely will be great with the running end of things.
07:22I'm feeling good.
07:23A little bit nervous but I'm sure everyone's feeling like that.
07:26I don't think the course is that bad.
07:28We know what each other's weaknesses are and our strengths so we know what to help each other with.
07:32So with the Steuarts, the baby of the family is going to go first.
07:37So that's Liam.
07:38He seems really up for it and I think it's really nice that the youngest of the family is going.
07:42Yeah, I'm excited to be the one that starts it and I think we're going to get through first.
07:46I mean, I was thinking in my head, maybe I'll do it but then he said he would so I didn't argue.
07:51It's really exciting to take part with the family.
07:54The kids are used to competing, obviously, individually.
07:56But we've never really played on a team together and usually when we do it ends not.
08:02So, wow.
08:03Yeah, go ahead.
08:04Best of luck.
08:05And ready to go with their feet on solid ground are the Smith family.
08:08Mark, Mum, Cathy and Sean against Ellen's Stuarts.
08:13Elisha, Dad Owen and Blah.
08:16Starting the race in the cold Irish Sea are Adam Smith in purple and the youngest of the Stuarts, Liam.
08:21He's just 15.
08:22He's wearing dark blue.
08:23Three, two, one.
08:24Paul O'Donovan gets boxed to the top underway and there is the box.
08:29This is an army kit box and the two lads have got to run across Gormonstone Beach.
08:34Good man, good man.
08:35With that box and up to the rest of their family.
08:3919-year-old Adam Smith is out in front wearing purple.
08:42Get up.
08:42The terrain is difficult here.
08:45It's tricky.
08:46Liam Stewart isn't too far behind.
08:49So, that kit box is empty at the moment.
08:51Get it to your family.
08:52Come on.
08:52Get it to your family.
08:53Go, go, go, go, go.
08:53They've got the sandbags and there's the rest of the Smith family from County Loud.
08:57They didn't have that far to travel here today.
08:59Bring it on.
09:00A bit of a bigger journey for the Stewart family.
09:02There's Dad Owen out in front and he's got two of those sandbags.
09:05Got it.
09:06Come on, Cathy.
09:07Come on.
09:08You got some real stuff.
09:09Davey getting stuck in with the Smith family already.
09:11You're hearing him.
09:12Come on.
09:15Adam, stand up.
09:17Get in.
09:19So, now they're up to the camo net.
09:22And if anything goes here, as long as all four of them go through with the army kit box,
09:27they can help each other.
09:28Lift the net up.
09:29Bring down the trot.
09:30One, two, three.
09:31Alan Keane, one of Ireland's greatest ever Paralympic athletes.
09:35Keep your head down.
09:36Come on.
09:37Get in.
09:37Get in.
09:37So, they're nearly away from the first net.
09:40Stand up from the net.
09:41It's kind of a little disjointed at the moment, but that's to be expected.
09:44Come on.
09:44You're getting caught.
09:45Come on.
09:46Come on.
09:46Go, go, go.
09:47Both families would have been nervous before the starts of box to the top.
09:50Come on.
09:50Get under the net.
09:51Go, go, go.
09:51Just to get stuck into the competition.
09:53There's Cathy Smith.
09:54She's not carrying any sandbags at the moment.
09:57Probably won't until they get up to the platform.
09:59Come on, girls.
10:00You can't leave the lad behind.
10:01So, Owen and Liam Stewart have been left behind a little.
10:04The four members of the Smith family are all together.
10:07So, that gives them an advantage.
10:09So, remember, these sandbags have to go inside the army kit box.
10:12That's Glaw and Alicia Stewart.
10:14And the box is empty at the moment.
10:16It'll be full very shortly with the help of Liam.
10:18Get off the ladder.
10:19Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
10:20Get off the ladder.
10:20The backs have to go in.
10:21They close the lid.
10:22And then they can move on.
10:23Oh, wait, wait, wait.
10:24So, as you can see there, there is a slight advantage for the Smith family from County Lowes.
10:28Get up, lad.
10:29Kaki, get up.
10:30Kaki, get up.
10:30Kaki, get up.
10:30Kaki, get up to the top.
10:32And Ellen is trying to really push her Stewart family right at the death.
10:36But the Smiths have got one up to the top of that platform as they get away from the wall.
10:42The Stewart's starting to close now.
10:43But it's advantage, the Smiths family.
10:46And they've got three up there.
10:48And there is the fourth member of the Smiths family up.
10:50They are the winners of this event.
10:53The Stewart's will now carry a 20-second time penalty into this second event.
10:59I lost my shoes.
11:04My shoes came off.
11:06I got caught in the mud.
11:07I was like, ah!
11:09Good job, guys.
11:11Where did you get caught?
11:11In the mud.
11:14Oh, Jesus.
11:14Gareth, well done.
11:15I just want to have them.
11:18No, it didn't go to plan.
11:21It was very hard.
11:22And I'm wrecked.
11:24Ellen, didn't go your way in the first event with Stewart's.
11:27Not for lack of trying.
11:27Because you were pretty phenomenal.
11:30But what do you think you could have changed?
11:32I think you guys just got caught up in it.
11:35You didn't stick to the game plan of kind of sticking together.
11:37But that's okay.
11:38And I think you'll learn from this.
11:39And as long as you've learned from it, it's not a mistake.
11:42Yeah, yeah.
11:42You can't dwell on it.
11:43I think we're just going to go in with a clean slate and do our best again.
11:47Very proud of us all.
11:49We worked well for good pieces of it.
11:50But there's bits there that can be worked on.
11:52I feel great.
11:53Yeah, it went according to plan.
11:55Davey gave us a plan and we stuck to it.
11:57We won, which is important.
11:58It's only the first race.
11:59You never get carried away by the first one.
12:01But there is a few smaller tweaks we have to do.
12:04We could have gone harder at the very end.
12:05That's my honest opinion.
12:07So with Davey taking gold on the first race, will he manage to make it a clean sweep?
12:12Or will Ellen catch him on the final lap?
12:15Let's find out.
12:17There's no second chances here, okay?
12:19Davey's next family are some familiar faces.
12:22The McDonaghs from Mayo.
12:23This is our second attempt at this.
12:25We were in the show in 2020.
12:27How much longer can she last?
12:28No, it's over.
12:29We'll say we didn't have the finish we wanted.
12:31Leah is very strong and she's very, very determined.
12:35I don't want to jinx us this year because that didn't go too well for us last time.
12:38But I would be confident in us as a family.
12:41If you remember this year, Daniel, he's probably the fittest out of all of us.
12:45Our strength as a family would be, we're very good endurance and we will try hard.
12:48Pat's fitted to fiddle like.
12:50Age is a state of mind.
12:51If you keep yourself right and you stay fit, the ability is in pushing yourself.
12:56Matthew is just so naturally athletic.
12:58He's very, very strong.
13:00I'd hope this year that we do get a better shot at it.
13:02We're flying the flag for the West of Ireland, I suppose.
13:05We're the only family in it, so we'll give it a go.
13:07I feel like the McDonaghs are definitely going to go for a knockout this year.
13:10Ellen's second family are the Barnivals from Tipperary.
13:13So when I told my family we got onto the show, I kind of had to wean them onto it just so the shock wasn't too much.
13:21But I think we'll make a really good team.
13:22I think we have a lot of strengths individually.
13:25Jamie is probably, will probably have the most stamina, just doesn't stop.
13:29So I'm definitely the weakest link when it comes to Jamie.
13:33Well, we're all competitive in different ways, but nobody likes to lose.
13:37Well, Paddy doesn't mind.
13:38But Niamh, Niamh is very competitive.
13:41Like she has Ireland medals for badminton, she horse rides, she used to play camogie.
13:45Everything she does, she does it to her best of her ability.
13:47I think I'm probably the most competitive.
13:49Did Paddy say me?
13:54Hayley definitely is a team leader, captain.
13:56She's the owner of the family.
13:58She's just all around perfect for this kind of situation, to be honest.
14:02I think we can win it.
14:03I think we can win it.
14:05I'm not going to say we will win it, but anything can happen.
14:08So you have to fake it till you make it.
14:15So I have the McDonough's from Mia.
14:17I've had him before and unfortunately we went out in the first round.
14:21It was, that year was tough because you were gone after one event.
14:24At least today they have two or three events, no matter what the story is.
14:27We were on the show a few years ago.
14:29A bit of PTSD from being back here and everything.
14:32But no, I'm buzzing to get going.
14:34Today we get a second bite at the cherry, so to speak.
14:37So you don't want to be going into the next trial with any disadvantage.
14:40And a 20-second penalty is a lot.
14:42Big penalty, so you'd want to get this point under your belt, if you're not.
14:46Oh, we'd like to be winning it.
14:47We don't want to be doing a second or a third run, whatever it is, to redeem ourselves, you know?
14:51So the Barnabills are my other family.
14:56They seem like a really strong family.
14:58They're really tight-knit.
14:59The mum and the daughter work together and the dad and the son work together.
15:02So they'll be really good at communicating.
15:04We're used to taking part in events.
15:06You know, we're used to spending so much time together.
15:08We relax each other.
15:09We advise each other.
15:11And Hayley had us tormented to do it for years.
15:14The most competitive is Hayley.
15:16Most, definitely the most competitive person is Hayley.
15:18I'm pretty competitive.
15:19I did put us up for this.
15:20Anyone who knows me from sport, I'm pretty vocal.
15:24I think seeing the course makes me feel better, but it's tough.
15:28It looks very, very tough.
15:30Wet, groggy.
15:31I'm being put in the water first, so it's not really looking hopeful for me.
15:34So at their starting position, it's Davies, McDonagh's in orange, Dad, Pat, Leah and Daniel versus Ellen's, Barneville's, Hayley, Dad, Paddy and Mum, Neve.
15:44Starting the race out in the Irish Sea, Jamie Barneville and Matthew McDonagh.
15:49Three, two, one.
15:52Away we go.
15:55It's second time around for the McDonagh family in orange.
15:58Matthew McDonagh starting the race for his family.
16:02Jamie Barneville getting it underway for his family.
16:06They're from Tipperary wearing light blue.
16:08And there's a little bit of a lead for Jamie at the moment over Matthew McDonagh.
16:12They're back to the rest of their families, but it's tight now.
16:15And away we go.
16:17The army kit box, there's a couple of sandbags gone in there for the Barneville family.
16:21And also for the McDonaghs.
16:23And this is Leah McDonagh out in front, not carrying any sandbags.
16:28Matthew is behind her.
16:29He's got one.
16:30So this is a flying start by the McDonaghs.
16:33They're up to the camo net, the first of two.
16:37Closely followed by two of the Barneville family.
16:40And the lads at the back, Jamie and Paddy, have that army kit box.
16:48So Ellen's certainly more vocal in this race than she was in the first.
16:52Go, go, go.
16:53Come on.
16:54Remember, the family finishing second carry a 20-second time penalty into event two.
16:59And you've got a shot there of just how big the lead is.
17:01It's not cute, but it is a lead for the McDonagh family.
17:04The Smiths trying to close the gap.
17:06So Davey was the McDonagh's coach when they were on the program before.
17:13So he'll know them well.
17:16Their strengths.
17:18And here they come.
17:19The McDonaghs have a really good lead at the moment.
17:24So Davey's losing the voice already.
17:27Here come the Barnevilles, though.
17:29Not too far behind.
17:30They can close this gap.
17:32All the bags have to go into the box.
17:33They're in, lid closed, and the McDonaghs have been impressive here.
17:37And the Barnevilles are up against it, losing a little bit of time.
17:41The bags all go into the hitbox.
17:44And Leah McDonagh, we saw her up at the top.
17:47And she pushes on to the top of the hill.
17:50Get up, get up, get up, get up, get up, get up.
17:53So Davey pushing them and pushing them.
17:55And they are very nearly there.
17:57And the Barnevilles are in trouble, losing time at that wall.
18:02And this has been really good by the McDonagh family from Mayo.
18:07They win.
18:08And the Barnevilles have to finish it out.
18:10They will carry the 20-second time penalty into the next race.
18:13Heather, go on.
18:14Oh, I'm disappointed now, to be honest.
18:16Um, more irritated than I used to.
18:19Woo, you finished.
18:20What's up, man?
18:21What's up, man?
18:21What's up, man?
18:23Where I went wrong was at the very beginning of the boxes,
18:26putting the sandbags into them.
18:27And Ellen had said to put one less.
18:30Told them not to put three bags in the box
18:31because it was going to be too heavy.
18:33We told the boys to be able to lift the tree.
18:35So we'll definitely listen completely the next time.
18:38Do you know what?
18:38I think this is the making of you guys
18:40because I can see how annoyed Hayley is right now.
18:43She is fuming.
18:44Steam is coming out of her ears.
18:46She is ready to go.
18:47She is ready to go.
18:49It's not what you've done.
18:49It's what you're going to do next is the thing.
18:51I'm buzzing, actually, to be honest.
18:52Like, it's so good to get the first one out of a runaway
18:55to get the win.
18:56McDonagh's, how does it feel knowing that, you know,
18:59you ran like the clappers, you did absolutely everything,
19:01and Davey's still coming to you critiquing every little bit?
19:03Feels good.
19:04It's taking a little bit of pressure off for the next event,
19:06the next challenge,
19:07so that gives us a little bit of confidence,
19:09but it's not done yet.
19:10Now, you, get out!
19:17Go, go, go!
19:18You're nearly there!
19:19Come on!
19:27Welcome back to Ireland's Fittest Family.
19:35Now, before the break,
19:36Davey struck gold not once, but twice in box to the top.
19:40But things didn't go quite so swimmingly for newbie coach Ellen Keane.
19:44However, there is still one more crucial event to go.
19:47It's not over here.
19:49They'll go through trenches, over mounds,
19:52and straight into a row about who's hauling what.
19:56It's teamwork, it's tactics,
19:58and it's a family argument waiting to happen.
20:00This is Hall or Nothing.
20:02This new event is a test of pure, dogged determination and stamina.
20:08Four family members start on a straw bale in the middle of the trench square
20:12and have to run 50 metres to another bale topped with 25 ammo boxes.
20:17Carrying no more than two at a time,
20:19the family members have to shuttle all the boxes down and out of the trench
20:23before running another 50 metres with them and stacking them on the Fittest Family logo.
20:28Once all 25 boxes are in place,
20:31it's a run down and back out of another trench
20:33and a sprint to a final straw bale.
20:36Once all four members of the family are standing on the bale,
20:39the clock stops in Hall or Nothing.
20:43First up for this new time trial, Hall or Nothing,
20:46are Ellen's Barnevals,
20:48who will be fighting against the clock and that 20-second time penalty.
20:52We're just going to go out and do as much as we can
20:54to try and beat the 20-second penalty.
20:56We don't know what to expect, but we have a plan.
20:58Ellen has a plan in place, so we're going to stick to that.
21:00So see the momentum, that's what you want.
21:03We're determined that it's going to go well,
21:04but I kind of forgot about the 20 seconds.
21:07I'm not thinking it's going to be easy,
21:09but I feel more prepared that we've got one under our belt.
21:12Shaved them 20 seconds off fairly fast, so very confident.
21:16Good luck!
21:18Ready to go for the Barnevals.
21:20Hayley, Jamie, Paddy and Niamh.
21:23Three, two, one!
21:27Paulo Donovan gets the Barnevals underway.
21:29Remember, they are carrying a 20-second time penalty
21:33from the first event.
21:35So there are 25 of these ammo boxes on top of that veil,
21:40and they can carry no more than two at a time.
21:42So they've got to go down that steep drop into the trench.
21:46The strategy they've worked out with their coach, Ellen Keane,
21:51important here, but they're just stacking them
21:53on the other side of the trench.
21:56Come on, remember those 20 seconds are important here.
21:58So a bit of heavy lifting to be done.
22:01Niamh and Hayley lifting them off the top of the veil,
22:04and Paddy and Jamie just arranging them
22:06on the far side of the trench.
22:08So the Barnevals will set the time to beat.
22:14And they very nearly have those ammo boxes
22:16moved to the other side of the trench.
22:19Now they've just got to run them down
22:21to the Fittest Family platform
22:24and stack them down there.
22:27So here's the first four with Paddy and Jamie Barneville.
22:30So 21 to go, as you can see, with four delivered.
22:35Time at 1.30.
22:38Who knows whether that's good or not.
22:40We'll find out, though.
22:42So Ellen, a nice calm presence for her family.
22:45It's temporary. Remember that.
22:47If it's heavy, drop it, come back to it.
22:4915 to go now.
22:53So Paddy delivers another one.
22:56Here come Hayley.
22:57And her mum, Niamh, is just behind her.
23:01So Niamh just carried one.
23:05So ten will become eight very shortly.
23:08There it is in just over two minutes.
23:11So this is really starting to burn
23:13the legs of the Barneville family.
23:15Really demanding, just shuffling
23:17from one side of the field to the other.
23:21Oh, look at that.
23:22Niamh Barneville dropped one of the boxes.
23:24So that will still have to be collected.
23:27I have to pick this one up.
23:29So they've now got four left, three left.
23:31But there's one still out on the course.
23:33And I think Paddy is going to collect that now.
23:35No, he's run by it.
23:36Jamie actually has gone down to get it.
23:38Go, go, go.
23:38You're nearly there.
23:39So they are very nearly there.
23:40Take those 20 seconds.
23:41Drop it, drop it.
23:42They will set the time for the rest to try and beat.
23:45Remember, though, they've got to add 20.
23:46So the boxes have all been stacked.
23:48They're down into the trench, out again.
23:50And now a sprint down to the final bale.
23:52And they've got to drag themselves up to the top.
23:55They're really tired at the moment, the Barneville family.
23:58There is the finish line, the finishing bale.
24:01Get up, get up, get up, Barneville family.
24:02Up they go.
24:03And they stop the clock at 2 minutes and 57 seconds.
24:06With the 20 second time penalty, it's 3.17.
24:12I think it went well.
24:14We're happy with it.
24:14Because we all work together.
24:17Ellen's happy.
24:18We're happy.
24:19So couldn't win any better.
24:20I think it's going to be very tight.
24:21I think the 20 seconds this morning could do us, let's say.
24:24I don't know.
24:24We did our best, like so.
24:26I think you might have found your voice.
24:27I found my voice.
24:28I found it and I'm about to lose it.
24:33But you used her well, in fairness to you.
24:35Well, Hayley told me she wanted tough love.
24:37So that's exactly what I gave her.
24:38With the penalty, I suppose I am okay with going into the Eliminator.
24:42I've kind of come to peace with it.
24:44But saying that, I suppose I've always wanted to do the wall.
24:46So careful what you wish for.
24:50Next up for Hall or Nothing are Davey and the Smiths.
24:54I think we're in a good position.
24:55We had a good result earlier on today.
24:56So we've seen the course there and I think we're confident enough, yeah.
25:00Then you both, you do the best you can.
25:03He should be coming back.
25:04He honestly should be doing one more than her.
25:06Davey gave us a strategy, which is top secret.
25:09So.
25:11Can't tell anyone, do you?
25:12Can't tell anyone.
25:13Stick to what he said, pretty much, yeah.
25:14Second to go are Davey's Smiths, Sean, Adam, Cathy and Mark.
25:21Three, two, one.
25:24The Barnevilles did Hall or Nothing in three minutes and 17 seconds.
25:30They had a 20 second time penalty.
25:32There's no such issue for the Smith family from County Louth.
25:37Come on, get it over, quick.
25:38They've got to move those 25 ammo boxes off the bale from one side of the trench to the other
25:45and then stack them down on the fitness family platform.
25:48This is, this feels like a quick start.
25:51So I know there's such a long way to go.
25:54But they're pushing already.
25:56And Davey will push them.
25:57I want you out and start running.
25:58I want you out and start running.
25:59You start running.
26:00So Davey wants those boxes to get on the move.
26:03No more than two at a time.
26:05So there's the first two out of the 25.
26:08And we are just approaching one minute gone.
26:16So four in total have been stacked.
26:1921 to go.
26:21Cathy is out of the trench.
26:23And now they are really moving.
26:28Davey, his voice getting louder.
26:30There's more tension in it.
26:31So Davey working very closely and focusing on Cathy Smith here.
26:40Sean, Adam and Mark doing their stuff.
26:43The Smiths were impressive in the first race, weren't they?
26:46And they're backing it up here.
26:483.17 was the Barnabas time.
26:5111 boxes to go now.
26:53Nine and seven.
26:56So Cathy has two now.
26:58And the lads, she won't have to make another run back because her three sons seem to have
27:05this covered with the remaining boxes.
27:07So now look at this time.
27:08Not even two minutes done.
27:10Cathy just taking a bit of a breather as the lads arrive with the remaining ammo boxes.
27:15There's the very last one.
27:18So now the push to the finish.
27:20Come on, get in.
27:21From the start, this felt quick that they were really going at quite a clip.
27:25And now they have to go back and just give Cathy a dig out.
27:29There was a fall there from Cathy Smith.
27:32She's okay though and moving again.
27:34And look at that time.
27:35The Smith family are sending out a bit of a message.
27:38They were very impressive in the first event.
27:40And they're going to back that up here.
27:41Comfortably getting inside the time of the Barnabas.
27:44And setting the new fastest time.
27:46The Smith family.
27:47Two minutes and 35 seconds.
27:49That was really, really good.
27:51Well, that felt quick.
27:52Oh, shaking.
27:56Absolutely shaking.
27:57Yeah, that was a tough one.
27:59Really tough.
27:59I haven't heard you do that high pitch in a while.
28:01Do you think you're a little bit tough on Kathleen?
28:03I asked her beforehand what she wanted.
28:05Fair.
28:05So she said that's what she wanted.
28:08Drive me on, Davey.
28:09My mum, she's unreal.
28:10I know she was dreading a bit coming and she was nervous all week.
28:13But now she's here, she's been flying.
28:15She's probably the main role in her team.
28:17I don't think there was too much more in her for us.
28:19That was really good.
28:20No, there's nothing we could have done differently.
28:23Nothing at all.
28:23Again, get for a break, all right?
28:25Yeah.
28:26Next up are Ellen and the stewards.
28:29Now, they lost the first event.
28:30So they'll also be fighting against the clock.
28:32And that 20-second time penalty.
28:35The biggest difficulty that the stewards are going to face
28:38is probably the strength in them.
28:40I'm a little nervous because I'm not one for lifting heavy weights.
28:44It looks really hard.
28:46It looks like it's going to be a killer.
28:48It's just brute strength and stamina.
28:50Guys, this is why you entered.
28:53Bit of a challenge.
28:54Bit of family bonding.
28:56Yeah, the 20 seconds will make a big difference.
28:58I think it'll be hard to make it up because it's quite short.
29:02Here are Ellen's stewards, Blah, Alicia, Owen and Liam.
29:06Three, two, one.
29:09So the Smith family set the new fastest time of two minutes and 35 seconds.
29:15The problem for the Stewart family here is that 20-second time penalty.
29:20But let's see how they go.
29:22So that's Owen Stewart out in front.
29:24We've seen the other family stack the boxes on the far side of the trench.
29:27But this is different.
29:28Look at Owen tearing away there with those two boxes.
29:31They can only move two at a time.
29:33And they are doing this differently.
29:34We've not seen this before.
29:35So Ellen had one go at this earlier on with the Barnevilles.
29:40And Liam delivers two more.
29:42So we'll see if this works.
29:43It is different.
29:46So they are just moving two at a time across from one side of the trench to the other.
29:51A slip from Liam Stewart.
29:53He's okay, though.
29:54So just approaching a minute.
29:57Will this work?
29:58It's a bit of a gamble.
29:59But sometimes the gamble pays off.
30:02And they need to make up time with the 20-second time penalty against them.
30:11So they have 17 left.
30:12Now it's 15 out of the 25.
30:16Everybody working hard, working together.
30:20Viti, you okay?
30:21Yeah.
30:21Yeah?
30:22Ellen is nice and calm.
30:23Paula Dunlvan just checking.
30:24Everything is a book board.
30:26Sweet.
30:27So a minute and a half.
30:29You're nearly there.
30:30The quicker you girls can do this.
30:31The quicker you girls can join into the lab.
30:322.35 is the fastest time set by the Smith family.
30:35The quicker you can help your dad and your brother.
30:36And now the Stuarts from Dublin need to push a little harder.
30:42Everything is burning.
30:4311 to go shortly.
30:44That will be nine with 15-year-old Liam delivering two more.
30:49Okay.
30:49That's a nice small one.
30:50So nine to go.
30:54So Alicia working hard.
30:56There's Blah with the last box off that straw bale.
31:00Slide down.
31:04And join in.
31:05Over two minutes now.
31:07Very nearly there.
31:09And Blah takes two.
31:11There's one left down at the bottom.
31:13And it's Alicia who's going to go and collect that.
31:16So they're not going to beat 2.35.
31:18Good job.
31:19That was really good teamwork.
31:20Okay, turn it in.
31:21Remember, 20 seconds will be added on at the end.
31:23Okay, as soon as it's gone, you guys can get stuck.
31:25So they've got the final three boxes on the platform.
31:27And now it's the sprint to the finish.
31:29The final bale.
31:30As quickly as possible.
31:31A leap over into that trench.
31:35And they have been impressive.
31:37They've been very, very good.
31:38It was a different strategy devised by Ellen Keane.
31:42Two up at the top of the bale.
31:43Blah up there as well.
31:45And Owen also.
31:46And their time is 2 minutes and 51.
31:48Plus 20.
31:50It's 3.11.
31:51We could be.
31:53We could be.
31:54Oh, anything.
31:55If we could dream.
31:57We could dream.
31:58I feel better now that it's over.
32:00I felt during it.
32:00I thought my heart was going to come out of my chest.
32:02It was such hard work running with those boxes.
32:05I don't think I've ever seen a smile come off a time trial like this.
32:09You seem delighted.
32:10I am delighted.
32:11I'm so afraid of them.
32:12Yeah, I think we did well.
32:14I don't think we could have gone any faster.
32:16Yeah, I think it went as well as it could have.
32:18I think we stuck to the plan.
32:20And yeah, I think we've got our momentum back.
32:23Last up for hole or nothing are Davey and the McDonaghs.
32:26With the win under their belt, they're in a strong position.
32:29I'm really hoping now the 20-second advantage will help us.
32:32Like, it is a massive advantage to have.
32:35Yes and no.
32:36It stands well if you implement your game plan correctly.
32:40We need to get this tight before we go now.
32:42If you mess about and you don't stick to the game plan,
32:44the 20 seconds won't make a huge amount of difference, to be quite honest.
32:48Have you got me now?
32:50Davey's put most of the plan together, to be honest.
32:52Myself and Daniel will go into the ditch.
32:55Lee and Dad will hand us the boxes.
32:56And then the four of us will run them out as fast as we can.
33:00All right.
33:01Last to go.
33:01It's Davey and McDonaghs.
33:03Matthew, Leah, Pat and Daniel.
33:07Let's go, lads.
33:08Let's go.
33:09Two, one.
33:10No time penalty to deal with here for the McDonagh family from County Mayo.
33:15Second time to appear in the competition.
33:19And they're starting to move those ammo boxes already.
33:24So Davey had one go at this earlier on.
33:26Let's go, let's go, let's go.
33:28And it's a similar strategy.
33:30Just move the boxes off the bale.
33:32And from one side of the trench to the other.
33:34And then they will shuffle them back and forth.
33:38So you see Pat there.
33:40He's dad to Matthew and Leah.
33:42He's also grandfather to Daniel.
33:44Fantastic to see a granddad and his grandson taking part,
33:48competing together in Ireland's fittest family.
33:50Out you go, Daniel.
33:52Go, go, go.
33:53So the McDonaghs, the last to go in haul or nothing.
33:58If they can beat the Stewart's time of 3.11,
34:01which was the second fastest time up to now,
34:04they will avoid the Eliminator.
34:05So keep that in mind.
34:06Three minutes, 11 seconds.
34:08This looks quick.
34:09It's a brisk pace from the McDonaghs.
34:13Come on, come on, it has to be faster.
34:15And Davey will push.
34:18He sure will all the way to the finish.
34:23So they won their first event, the McDonaghs.
34:26Come on, we need to go faster now.
34:27Quickly, quickly, quickly.
34:28Go, go.
34:30Go.
34:30And Leah has got those two boxes.
34:33They're a big boxing family.
34:34So Leah has been urged to pass out.
34:40Or to have passed.
34:42So look at that.
34:43Seven boxes remaining.
34:44Here's more.
34:45So Leah is going to sit out the rest of this,
34:47save the energy for the final sprint.
34:50Three minutes, 11 seconds is the Stewart's time.
34:53And that is what the McDonaghs need to beat
34:57to avoid the Eliminator.
35:00Two minutes gone.
35:02This is impressive.
35:03This is really, really good.
35:06There's the last of the boxes.
35:08Coming now.
35:09Final two dropped by Matthew.
35:11And off they go.
35:13One more.
35:13Steep in trying to go down, out of the trench.
35:16And away they go.
35:19And this, they're laying down a marker.
35:21It will be two wins out of two.
35:23Pat needs some help from Matthew to get to the final bail.
35:27No, he doesn't.
35:27He says, I've got this.
35:28And he has got this.
35:29And they've got it.
35:30And can Pat get to the top to stop the cockpit?
35:33They drag him up there on top of that bail.
35:35Two minutes and 33 seconds.
35:37Wow.
35:39Oh, they gave it their all.
35:40I don't know, was it enough?
35:41Well, I knew it was going to be physically demanding.
35:44My God, I wasn't prepared for that.
35:46Being fairly tired now after it, but feeling good.
35:49Pat absolutely spent Leah.
35:50Spent the two lads everything they could give.
35:53So, fair play to them.
35:54Well done.
35:54When we're in the heat of battle, if you want me to find you two or three seconds, I'll find it.
35:59I couldn't ask for any more.
36:00Hi, families.
36:10Well done on some unbelievable performances today.
36:15But it is now time for me to reveal the first family who are going through to the quarterfinals of Ireland's fittest family.
36:22And I can now reveal the first family who are going through to the quarterfinals are...
36:34Oh, I'm delighted with it, yeah.
36:36I thought we've done very well as a team.
36:38That leaves three more families.
36:40The next family who are heading through to the quarterfinals and avoiding tonight's eliminator are...
36:56Congratulations to Davey and the Slits.
37:02Adrenaline's kind of pumping all the way through.
37:06And happy to come out with the win, yeah.
37:07So proud of them.
37:08So proud of them boys.
37:10We only hope they get better as the show goes on.
37:12Which means the Barnavals and the Stuarts.
37:16You are heading to tonight's eliminator.
37:19It's Ellen versus Ellen.
37:21This is going to be interesting.
37:24So confident, yeah.
37:26Ah, come here.
37:27Thanks for looking.
37:28Thanks.
37:29Tough one.
37:29Well, I'm going to win or I'm going to lose.
37:31It's about going to happen.
37:32Yeah, it's about going to happen.
37:33You're going to have to happen.
37:33You know I'm streaming fabulous.
37:35Any day you can get out and get them through and not doing an eliminator is a good day.
37:40I don't know.
37:41I don't trust Davey Fitz.
37:46Use momentum.
37:47Come on, lean forward.
37:48Welcome back to Ireland's fittest family.
38:02Now, before the break, Davey managed to get both his families through to the quarterfinal
38:06and is probably halfway down the M7 at this point.
38:09Meaning that Ellen Keane is going to be facing stiff competition in tonight's eliminator herself.
38:15Ellen Keane, your very first day on Ireland's fittest family.
38:22How's it been?
38:23It's been really good.
38:24It's been long and I'm tired, so I can only imagine how the families feel.
38:28But I've honestly had the best time here.
38:30Davey Fitz, he was the OG that you were with today.
38:34Did you learn much from him?
38:36I think I did, but I don't know if it worked out well.
38:38I don't know if he was playing mind games with me or not.
38:40Because I am in the eliminator.
38:43So, yeah, I learned a lot from him, but I think I got in, like, the Davey bulk.
38:48Because I've been shouting at my families and I was slagging him off for shouting at his families before.
38:53And here I am.
38:54Kind of like a steep learning curve, but a steep learning ramp instead, would you say?
38:59Yeah, Ireland's fittest family ramp.
39:00I've gone up it or down it.
39:02I don't know.
39:03I don't even know what's going on.
39:04Well, speaking of going up it, the Barnivals are going to have to try their best to get up there first.
39:08What kind of tactics are you looking for in the eliminator?
39:11Do you know what?
39:11They learned so much from the time trial about working together as a team and relying on each other as a whole.
39:17And that's definitely what they're going to need to do here.
39:19So, I trust that the learning experience they had there in the time trial will bring them through this eliminator.
39:25Okay, well, you better go and see how they are.
39:27The very best to look right.
39:28And we'll chat to you afterwards.
39:30Thanks, Claire.
39:30That is Ellen and the Barnivals.
39:33And now it is time to meet the coach of the Stewart family, Ellen Keane.
39:38How are you?
39:39Hi, Laura.
39:40Long time no see you.
39:41I know.
39:41It's been a while.
39:43You've got the Stewart family in the eliminator tonight against the Barnivals with Ellen Keane.
39:48How are you fixed?
39:49Do you know what?
39:50It's going to be tough.
39:51It really is.
39:52But, like, the Stewart's have just kind of shown to me how strong a family they are.
39:58I was completely in awe of their time trial.
40:00They really worked together as a team.
40:02They communicated a lot better, which I was really proud of.
40:06So, again, like, I'm really hoping they're going to use that here in the eliminator.
40:09Okay, well, best of luck.
40:11I will see you at the end of the ramp, all right?
40:13Go!
40:14Go get them!
40:14I'll be both happy and sad.
40:16Yeah, I know.
40:16It's kind of one or the other.
40:17Good luck, Ellen!
40:18Good luck, Ellen.
40:48Or 2.4 metres high wall.
40:51Once over that, it's a run up our famous ramp.
40:53The first family with four people standing at the top wins the race and a place in the quarterfinals.
41:04Both Ellen's families have given it their all today, but it's not over yet because it's time for the eliminator.
41:10And they're going to have to leg it up this ramp like they left the immersion on and the off switches at the top.
41:15Good luck, Ellen.
41:16And good luck, Ellen.
41:18So, I have both my families in the eliminator.
41:21It's not ideal.
41:23I would have liked to have gone up against Devi like one last time today, but there's not really a challenge for me now.
41:29I just have to be Switzerland.
41:31I just have to be neutral.
41:32Oh, baby, baby, how was I supposed to be?
41:37She now has two families in the eliminator.
41:41It's very hard to pick one above the other.
41:46You can't.
41:47Looking into the height of some of the obstacles, it's really going to be a challenge.
41:52I'm not confident about that ramp.
41:54Show me how you want it to be.
42:00Just imagine, right, if you're running and you look at where the FF is and you commit to doing that, you're only going to run so far up, right?
42:0790% of the ones that fail are looking into that middle bit.
42:11Because think about it, you're looking there, you're not running.
42:14Whereas if you commit to the run and run and run looking up to the top, you'll get to the top because you're running going upwards.
42:20So, Devi obviously had two very strong families and they did a great job.
42:26But I don't know, I don't trust Devi Fitz.
42:28There's always something up his sleeve.
42:30Really, really nervous.
42:31It looks tough from beginning to end.
42:33Just exhausting.
42:35We're hopeful.
42:36That's the word for it.
42:37Yeah, we're hopeful.
42:38We're going to do our best.
42:39Pick me, baby, one more time.
42:43For a place in the quarterfinals, it's our eliminator.
42:45The Barnevilles from Tipperary in light blue against the Stuarts in dark blue from Dublin.
42:50Remember why you started it, okay?
42:52You want to finish with a smile.
42:55Three, two, one.
42:55And it's Ellen against Ellen.
42:57Paul O'Donovan, our referee, gets them underway.
43:00And they're starting with this truck tyre.
43:04They've got to move at 100 metres.
43:06It is very difficult to keep it on course and on line.
43:11And it's a demanding start right at the beginning of the eliminator.
43:15They're on the runway here in Gormonston.
43:21It is a very awkward piece of rubber to move.
43:25There's a slight lead for the Barnevilles.
43:28And that lead is good.
43:29And they've moved all of the truck tyre over all of the finish line.
43:33So they have the lead.
43:35The Barneville family from Tipperary.
43:36They're up to the container.
43:38It's 2.6 metres high.
43:40And this is all about teamwork and calmness.
43:44Here come the Stuarts in dark blue.
43:48Use each other.
43:49Come on.
43:49So that is Owen Stewart first up.
43:52And here's the rest of the gang.
43:54Good job, guys.
43:55So the Barnevilles, well, they're two up there.
43:57But they've slowed down a little.
43:59They've had an issue just getting the third member of their family up to the top.
44:03I think it was Hayley who's now there.
44:04Oh, my God.
44:04You're doing so good.
44:05Come on.
44:06So now they're neck and neck.
44:07All four up to the top of the container.
44:09Jump down.
44:10And they've got these bales to get over.
44:13Not straightforward at all.
44:16Hayley Barneville first through.
44:17And two away for the Stuarts.
44:22Now two away for the Barnevilles.
44:23And three.
44:24And they are neck and neck.
44:26And now that's Paddy Barneville having a go himself.
44:28And did really well.
44:29He's just going back to check on the rest of his family.
44:32They're OK.
44:33Go, go, go, go, go.
44:34This is an army training log.
44:36And it weighs 50 kilograms.
44:38And they've got to move with it as fast as they can.
44:41The Stuarts have the lead now.
44:42Opening up a bit of a lead.
44:44That's a good lead now, isn't it?
44:47So they have forced themselves to the front.
44:51The Stuarts family.
44:53Sandbags to be moved.
44:55To the right, to the right, to the right.
44:56Off that platform.
44:57Get out of the way.
44:58They can take as many as they want.
45:01Good job, guys.
45:02Doing really well.
45:04Still the Stuarts lead.
45:07All of the sandbags delivered to that platform.
45:10And now they're up to the wall.
45:12It's eight foot high.
45:132.4 meters.
45:17Here come the Barnevilles.
45:20They're not out of this by any manner of means.
45:23Two up at the top of the wall for the Stuarts.
45:25Now the Barnevilles have got one up there.
45:29This has been a difficult experience for Ellen Keane.
45:32She has navigated it very well.
45:34Offering plenty of support for both families.
45:36And now you heard Davy's advice for Ellen.
45:38And that advice has been taken by Alicia Stewart.
45:42She was looking at the top of the ramp as she ran up there.
45:44So the Stuarts, in dark blue, have got one up to the top of the ramp.
45:47But the Barnevilles are losing time at the wall.
45:49Alicia Stewart is up there for this very strong GA family.
45:54So they have an advantage.
45:55The Barnevilles have not been brilliant at that wall.
45:57But that can all change at this ramp.
46:01So now Owen Stewart has a go.
46:04And that is really good from Jamie Barnevilles.
46:06So one up for them.
46:07But three up almost for the Stuarts.
46:09Now it is three up.
46:10Paddy Barnevilles tries to make it two.
46:12And the Stuarts trying to get Blaw up there.
46:14But she can't.
46:15She's gone down.
46:15So a fail there that opens the door for the Barnevilles.
46:18Paddy Barnevilles trying to be dragged to the top by Jamie.
46:21And Paddy's come back down.
46:22Blaw on the other side.
46:23Can win it now.
46:24Can they get her up there?
46:25For the fourth and final member of their family.
46:28Almost two for the Barnevilles.
46:30But the Stuarts have won it.
46:32They've won it.
46:32Blaw standing up there.
46:33They're all standing.
46:35And that is some performance by the Stuarts family from Dublin.
46:38They look like they really enjoyed that.
46:39They're through to the quarterfinals.
46:41Come on, Paddy.
46:44Grab him.
46:44Call him.
46:47The eliminator is definitely harder than it looks.
46:49You knew it was hard.
46:50But it's really hard.
46:54Give it a go.
46:55We're gutted, kind of, yeah.
46:57Yeah, we're not, I suppose, we're not happy to be going, I suppose, as early as we hope we wouldn't be, I suppose.
47:03But so proud.
47:03Yeah, so proud.
47:04And who knows?
47:05Who knows?
47:05We might get them back.
47:06They might want to come back, we might want to come back for, you know, to go again.
47:15Yeah, when I saw Alicia just going at it and getting herself a new, once she got the hands on, that she wouldn't let go and she'd get up.
47:22And then when all the others went up, I thought I was pretty calm then.
47:25I was actually, you know what, they have me.
47:27Come on, Stuarts, get up off that ramp.
47:29I swear you just did an eliminator or something.
47:32Well done.
47:33Well done.
47:34Congrats.
47:35Well done.
47:37Hasn't set in yet.
47:38No, has not set in that you've just won the eliminator.
47:42That has to feel just unbelievable.
47:43It was brilliant, yeah, because, like, it would have been disappointing to go home empty-handed the first time we've been here.
47:48It's a long day to go home.
47:49Nothing would have been tough, so we had a great feeling that that didn't happen and that we're successful.
47:54It's kind of taken over now, making plans for how we're going to get through things.
47:57Like, I'm going to have a shower first, and Liam's going to have a shower, and Mum's going to have a bath, and she's going to have a shower.
48:01It's like everything's turned into Ireland's fittest family.
48:04Everything we do, we'll have to snap out of it and just relax, I think.
48:08Ah, you guys just had that extra little pep in your staff that I think was missing.
48:13You took all those lessons that you learned from the past two challenges and just applied them here.
48:18So they weren't mistakes.
48:19They got you through today.
48:20They're going to get you through to the quarterfinals and get you through that day, and then on to the semis, and then she'll be winning.
48:26See what I'm saying.
48:27And if you actually think about it, it's good practice to get the ramp in now because that's what actually wins the finals, so, you know?
48:33Yeah.
48:33You know you don't want to jinx it too much, but for now, you can celebrate that you are going through to the quarterfinals of Ireland's fittest families!
48:41What a way to end our heats here at our base camp in Gormantstown in County Meath.
48:49Join us next week where we'll be at our quarterfinals and things are about to get dirty.
48:57Next week, it's Into the Bog for the first three of our quarterfinalist families.
49:02You owe me big time.
49:05With newbies Michael Dara-McCauley.
49:08Take your time, take your time, take your breath.
49:09We have loads of time to play with.
49:11And Andrew Trimble.
49:13Yeah, get into it, into it, crawl, Colleen, Sharon.
49:15Yeah, come on.
49:16Going to battle with veteran coach Davey Fitz.
49:19We have three teams racing against each other.
49:21I'm kind of looking forward to the carnage of what's going to happen.
49:24I'm kind of looking forward to the carnage of what's going to happen.
49:55Bye.
49:57Bye.
50:00Bye.
50:01Bye.
50:02Bye.
50:02Bye.
