Millions of Americans traveling for Thanksgiving could face weather-related delays on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Transcript
00:00These are some of the top travel destinations for Thanksgiving, according to AAA, and a lot of you shouldn't have too many issues.
00:06However, you know what's on the list? Atlanta, and we have the red light for your Tuesday overall here.
00:14Things improve a little bit Wednesday, but still could see some delays overall.
00:18The other problem spot potentially is New York City.
00:20Some fair conditions both days, but could see some lightning delays and some issues because of wind.
00:24But let's zoom out, look at the bigger picture, give you an idea of what to expect no matter where you might be traveling across the continental U.S.
00:31Tomorrow, it really is the severe storms that take the cake for the poor conditions overall.
00:36But the snow up into the northern plains and especially blizzards possible, well, that certainly goes into the red category as well.
00:45Quite a bit of yellow fair conditions because of the rain and the thunderstorms in the Ohio Valley and parts of the northeast overall.
00:51Take a look at Future Radar, how all of this plays out, give you an idea of what to expect in the couple different storms that we're tracking.
00:59So we have the snow moving into the northern plains.
01:02We have the rain moving into the northeast.
01:04Those are the first two things to focus on as we go throughout Tuesday.
01:07We're at 730 a.m.
01:09We play this out.
01:10You see more of that snow just spinning up there and the rain really moving up into the northeast.
01:15Now, the other thing I want to draw your attention to is the northwest.
01:18This is where we have an atmospheric river moving in, especially late Tuesday into Wednesday.
01:26We're really going to see some trouble here.
01:28Now, we're still on the east coast, rainy by 930 Tuesday, seeing some of the snow working its way into Minneapolis at that point as well.
01:35You can see Wednesday morning still lingering impacts from the same stuff we were dealing with Tuesday.
01:41We go throughout the day and the atmospheric river really takes over.
01:43But so does the lake affect snow.
01:46You can see the core of our storm system moving over the Great Lakes triggers the lake affect snow that will really be with us the rest of the week.
01:52Let's talk a little bit more about the atmospheric river, though.
01:54The concerns here are flash flooding and damaging wind gusts, all of which can cause problems, especially at the airports with the wind.
02:01But if you're driving, you come across a flooded roadway, that gets you into trouble.
02:05Now, one thing to note here, we look to Wednesday, that's certainly where we have the poor conditions overall.
02:11But then also we start to get the lake affect snow impacts.
02:14But then the rain lingering along the east coast, that's going to cause some delays possible here as well.
02:19Back to the atmospheric river, though.
02:22If you're driving through any of the mountain passes, the good news here is it's mostly rain rather than snow.
02:27Somewhere like Stevens Pass, though, we can accumulate a couple inches.
02:29The rain amounts, though, this is where the concerns come in.
02:33These areas with two to four inches, even up to that active other local storm acts, nine inches of rain.
02:37Yeah, that's where we are likely to see some flash flooding.
02:42So Seattle, Portland, be prepared for these impacts.
02:45But, of course, it's not just you.
02:47So, I'm going to go.
