00:00Charlie, Meghan Markle on the cover of Harper's Bazaar.
00:04What was your reaction to the cover?
00:06I mean, I was slightly confused because the cover kind of read
00:11Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, is having her moment.
00:16And I think my first thought was, okay, so what on earth has the last five years been?
00:21I personally feel like her moment was when, you know,
00:24she and Harry threw a hand grenade into the British monarchy and walked away.
00:28You know, cool guys don't look at explosions and all that good stuff.
00:32I understand it.
00:34I think that she has done a lot more press in the past couple of years.
00:40And, you know, we have to remember, girl's got a Netflix show to promote
00:44and she also has some jams, some honeys, some flowery sprinkles.
00:48All of those things need to sell.
00:49And how do they sell?
00:51Publicity.
00:52Publicity.
00:52So it doesn't surprise me at all.
00:54The contents of the interview, I thought, were a bit odd.
01:00The writer couldn't seem to decide whether she was Meghan Markle's biggest fan
01:06or whether she thought the whole thing was a bit ridiculous.
01:10You know, it kind of wavered between quotes from Serena Williams
01:14about what an amazingly smart human being Meghan is
01:17and what an incredible mother she is
01:19to references to a strange moment at an Upper East Side townhouse
01:25where Meghan and Harry were staying
01:26when a kind of staff member opened the door
01:29and made this big show of introducing Meghan the Duchess of Sussex
01:33even though Meghan and the writer were the only two people in the house.
01:37So I just found the whole thing a bit confusing, to be honest.
01:42Yeah.
01:42But there were some nice personal anecdotes.
01:45You know, Meghan talked about Lily sitting on her lap
01:49as she takes business meetings from her home office.
01:52Right.
01:53She kind of gave this very gushing quote
01:57about Harry's full and bold love for her.
02:00But then again, there was a moment when it referenced Meghan
02:08at the Beverly Hills Hotel being brought this cappuccino
02:11with like a laser printed photo of her on it
02:13and all of that kind of stuff.
02:15So it just seemed a bit strange to me.
02:19The whole thing felt muddled.
02:22It did.
02:22It also felt like the context of it being like this is her moment,
02:26but we've seen so much of her lately that it feels like a little late
02:32to be being like, oh, she's our cover story, our cover star,
02:36and this is her moment.
02:37Like, well, she's already been living in this moment in particular.
02:41Yeah, I guess I don't know what it is about this moment.
02:46Right.
02:46Are we missing something?
02:48Yeah, that's worthy of a magazine cover.
02:51It's kind of like, okay, well, her Netflix show launched a while ago now.
02:56Right.
02:57As I heard it as well.
02:58Exactly.
02:58Her brand launched at, you know, the very beginning of April,
03:02I think is when all of the products started rolling out.
03:05And the interview didn't really focus that much, if at all,
03:11on her kind of Netflix show and the Netflix special
03:15or any of her holiday kind of selection of items that she's releasing.
03:20So I guess I kind of left my reading session thinking,
03:25like, what on earth is the moment of which you speak?
03:28Also, I kind of felt like I didn't learn anything that was really that new.
03:32It wasn't like there was this one quote or one moment.
03:35Usually for me, I feel like these celebrities do these types of covers.
03:39And I'm like, oh, a little anecdote I didn't know.
03:42Right.
03:42Or something unexpected.
03:43And it was like, Harry is in love with me.
03:46Okay, great.
03:47She calls him H.
03:47I'm like, do we have to still go over and over and over and over and over?
03:51And that that's not new news.
03:52I mean, when I saw the words Procter and Gamble,
03:55I about threw the magazine out of the window or metaphorical magazine.
03:58Let's be honest.
03:59I was reading it online.
04:00But if I hear that gosh darn soap story one more time.
04:05I know.
04:06It's rehashed in every single interview.
04:09Every interview.
04:09Every single speech.
04:10Like, okay, we get it.
04:13A word in a soap commercial changed.
04:15And bravo.
04:15Honestly, very industrious.
04:17It's an 11-year-old to write a letter to Procter and Gamble.
04:20But if that remains your crowning achievement at the age of 44,
04:24that's kind of sad.
04:26Like, is that the moment that Harper's Bazaar was referring to?
04:28We having a throwback Thursday?
04:30I don't know.
04:31And then the only other thing that I took away from it,
04:34because I feel like I didn't learn anything about her, really.
04:36And maybe that's because I know too much.
04:38Maybe it's because they didn't really give us anything new.
04:41She has flawless skin that allows her freckles to glisten in the sunlight
04:44or whatever the hell it was.
04:46I mean, she does have flawless skin.
04:48But again, I knew that.
04:49I knew that.
04:49I know.
04:50I already knew Harry loved her.
04:51I already knew she called him age.
04:53But I think the only takeaway that I had from it was her talking about
04:58sort of tiptoeing around the fact that she did this,
05:03anything she's been doing, the Netflix deal, Spotify stuff,
05:07as ever, she's giving herself the grace to fail.
05:11So it was like she almost kind of addressed the elephant in the room of people
05:17talking without her about how things haven't necessarily been a massive success.
05:23And that's it.
05:25It's like, okay.
05:25That's a good point, though, because I feel like she did that in a way of like,
05:30jokes on you because I'm not really failing.
05:32I'm just having fun.
05:34But I mean, that was, you know, it was kind of like, well,
05:37even I should be allowed to make mistakes and a world where you're perfect is no fun
05:42and I want to have fun.
05:43And, you know, it was that thing of like, no, I'm not failing.
05:46I'm just having fun.
05:48I'm just declining gracefully.
05:50Same.
05:50You know, I never fail.
05:52I'm just having fun.
05:53Yeah.
05:54Whoopsie daisy when I trip over in the street.
05:56Just having fun.
05:57That was on purpose.
05:58Just having fun here.
05:59I was actually trying to amuse the waiting crowds.
06:03Well, yes, I am in complete agreement.
06:06I don't think that we really learned anything new.
06:10And I think it's a shame because I do feel like these big kind of headline worthy cover stories
06:20with people like, you know, even the likes of Nicole Kidman,
06:24the Vogue interview that she did, albeit before her divorce was announced.
06:28But she was very candid in that interview about her parenting style and about her,
06:35you know, struggles to get to grips with her kind of, I guess, public perception as she gets older
06:41and all of that kind of stuff.
06:43And I just feel like that was lacking a bit in this story.
06:49And again, I come back to the wavering themes.
06:53It, you know, if you look at the arc of the interview, it kind of begins with Megan teaching some young girls about STEM.
07:00And then it goes to references to her kind of humble background in California.
07:06And then it goes to, oh, we're at the Beverly Hills Hotel and she's being served a super special cappuccino
07:11and having secretive chats with a big film exec.
07:14Right.
07:14And then it kind of swings again to like, oh, I'm just a helpless business owner trying to make a difference in the world.
07:20And like, oh, I'm allowed to fail.
07:22And then it kind of pivots to like Serena Williams being like, oh, my God, she's amazing.
07:26So it just it felt all over the shop.
07:29And it's interesting because the point or one of the points that the article tried to make was, you know,
07:36should Megan be punished or criticized for trying to be more than one thing?
07:41You know, she can be a business owner, but she can also be a stay at home mother, but she can also be an actress, et cetera, et cetera.
07:47But I feel like it's that kind of confusion that permeates her life and permeates her public image, I should say.
08:00Right.
08:00We come back to it every time we speak.
08:02We do.
08:03Like, figure out what you want to do.
08:05We're trying to figure it out for you over here.
08:07I'm not saying that you can't do more than one thing.
08:10What I am saying is that when it comes to public perception, you cannot be the hero, the villain, the victim.
08:18Like, you can't be everything to all people.
08:21Right.
08:22Figure out who you are and figure out because you do have control over your public image.
08:27Like, Megan and Harry have made it very clear.
08:29Exactly.
08:30Like, they will only speak to media who they deem to be friendly.
08:33They will criticize and go after, you know, people who do and say things that they don't like.
08:41And I think as a result, they do have a very rare opportunity to craft their public image.
08:50It's just, you know, if they haven't been able to do it, I don't know who else will.
08:55I don't know.
08:55If they're confused, so are we.
08:56I mean, honestly, each and every day, but largely about this.
09:00But, okay, so we got this new cover story.
09:04It is coming, like we said, ahead of the release of her holiday special, which we did just get a teaser for.
09:10And speaking of, we saw a little bit of H.
09:13Oh, we did.
09:14There was a smoochy, smoochy, smoochy.
09:16There was.
09:18I mean, look, I love Christmas.
09:20Me too.
09:21I adore Christmas.
09:22I love Christmas decorations.
09:24I love it all.
09:24Well, this was, if you had shown me the trailer for season two or season one of With Love, Megan, and told me that you had AI'd a festive spin on it, that is what you got with the trailer for the holiday special.
09:40It is quite literally the exact same thing.
09:45It does feel the same.
09:46Just, you know, you kind of took out kind of Mindy Kaling and put in one of Megan's other friends.
09:51Right.
09:52Took out this chef, put in another chef, and put a few festive bows and like sprinkly snows on it.
09:59I actually honestly wish they would have started with the holiday special and been like, here, we're going to launch the show and the series or whatever with this holiday special and then release season one and season two in the year to come.
10:12Because maybe we would have felt a little more festive about it.
10:15Like, oh, we are hosting parties.
10:17We are all getting together.
10:18We are creating fruit boards for our friends.
10:21But we weren't doing that when it originally came out.
10:24So maybe if they would have started with, in my personal opinion, the holiday special, maybe we would have been more interested in season one and two.
10:31Yes.
10:31But the issue with that is they tried that tactic with the Spotify podcast launch.
10:37Oh, right.
10:38They released it as a kind of like holiday end of year special and like more to come.
10:43And then six months went by and everyone was like, when?
10:45Oh, my God.
10:46When's the rest of it?
10:47I fully forgot about that.
10:48Yeah.
10:49So it may be that, you know, everyone involved has a little bit of a hangover.
10:52From the last holiday endeavor that they tried to use to launch a project.
10:58But, you know, I'm just guessing.
11:00But, you know, that's what immediately is from to my mind.
11:03That's a fair guess.
11:04Okay.
11:05So, you know what?
11:06The strategy, we're still going to keep brainstorming from our little seats here.
11:09I know.
11:10Megan, we're just waiting for you to give us a call.
11:12Honestly.
11:13We're just helping with as ever.
11:14You know, there's there's sage involved now.
11:16Well, and it's interesting because we are seeing again with the trailer for the holiday
11:22special, et cetera, that very close connection between Megan's Netflix show and her brand
11:29as ever.
11:30Lest we forget, they are one in the same.
11:33Netflix backed as ever when Megan first launched it.
11:36Right.
11:37The show and the brand have been very closely linked ever since they both launched earlier
11:41this year and, you know, not long before Megan dropped the trailer for the Christmas
11:47special, she was sharing insights into how she and Harry are going to celebrate Thanksgiving.
11:53Spoiler alert.
11:54We should all be putting sage infused honey on our turkey.
11:56You know, but she kind of released videos on the as ever Instagram account where she's
12:02seen glazing a turkey and decorating for the holidays.
12:05So it's almost like Netflix and as ever are occupying the same calendar.
12:11But I think that that close connection is interesting.
12:15It is.
12:15And I also find it interesting that, you know, I had a little looky loo on the as ever holiday
12:21collection page.
12:22Did you?
12:23Are you getting sage honey for your turkey?
12:25Obvio.
12:26Yeah.
12:27I'm going to sage honey dish out of that thing.
12:30You know, just almost nothing has sold out.
12:35Oh, wow.
12:36Everything is readily available.
12:37I say everything.
12:38I'm sure like one or two.
12:39I think the raspberry spread, not jam spread, spread.
12:42I'm pretty sure that has sold out, but I'm pretty sure that has been sold out since it
12:47first launched.
12:48But everything else is there for the taking.
12:51Wow.
12:51And if you remember last time there was a big launch, I mean, I had to like claw people
12:56out of the way to get that jam spread.
12:58I know.
12:59This time around, the sage honey is still there.
13:01It's been there for days.
13:02Wow.
13:03So, you know, they really haven't found their quantity, quality.
13:10I mean, I don't know about the quality, but they really haven't found their ability to
13:12figure out the marketing of this.
13:15Like the two seem like a great idea having this partnership.
13:18We watch the show.
13:18We buy the products.
13:19Right.
13:19But it's like the pipeline isn't isn't adding up.
13:23No.
13:23And it's kind of like, OK, would it have been a smarter idea to release the Netflix show
13:30a little bit earlier in the season?
13:34Oh, like, why don't you release it over Thanksgiving weekend when, you know, people are full?
13:38People are sick and tired of their families.
13:41Just me.
13:41Yeah.
13:42And they need something to do.
13:44I feel like had it been released, for example, like the Black Friday, you know, if you'd released
13:51it on Black Friday and then announced some kind of as ever Black Friday sale.
13:56Oh, wait.
13:57There you go.
13:58Oh, my gosh.
13:58I'm telling you.
13:59The fact that no one from as ever Archwell Netflix or Megan's personal office have phoned
14:04me for their job is obscene.
14:06We're just sitting here.
14:07We should rename this from Royals Recap to, like, Think Tank for Megan.
14:12Here we are.
14:13It's Markle Tank.
14:15It is.
14:16Shark Tank.
14:16Markle Tank.
14:17Markle Tank.
14:17Exactly.
14:18Sussex, Charlie.
14:19Oh, I'm so sorry.
14:21Don't forget.
14:22But Barbara Corcoran, look out.
14:23I'm coming.
14:24Yeah.
14:25Seriously.
14:25All right.
14:26Well, hopefully we'll get a holiday card from this that from them this year because.
14:29Oh, I thought you meant us personally.
14:31We'll set it on the shelf right here when it arrives, guys.
14:34I don't think we're going to get one.
14:37With love.
14:39Unless it's like one of those things where at Disney you can mail them one and they'll
14:42mail you one back.
14:43Like, that's the only way we're getting a holiday card from the Sussexes.
14:45I was going to say, unless it's one of those Asian seats that will mail you poop.
14:48That might be the kind of Christmas card we're going to get from Megan.
14:51Oh, no.
14:52But we just gave her such a great idea.
14:53Hopefully we hopefully the Internet gets one so we can see the kids.
14:59I feel like that's always the big moment of the holiday season for them.
15:01Yes.
15:02And if we're doing this big holiday show, holiday celebration, holiday traditions.
15:06I don't know.
15:08Like, maybe there will be a surprise cameo from Archie in a little bit because that's
15:12what I want to see.
15:12The backs of their heads.
15:14Yes.
15:14Well, and you never know.
15:16We may get a Christmas Day vlog from Megan.
15:19You know, she's big into the vlogging these days.
15:21She kind of shared that, like, here's a video of my trip to New York with some, like, different
15:26clips of her and Harry eating pizza or just looking at pizza.
15:30It's unclear whether they actually ate it.
15:32But, you know, maybe we'll get that kind of, oh, the kids unwrapping gifts or Christmas
15:37morning at the Sussexes.
15:39I mean, I would love to know what Megan and Harry buy one another for Christmas.
15:45I feel like Harry is a jewelry guy.
15:46He seems to rely very heavily on, like, OK, I know she likes jewelry.
15:51Like, she stacks the bracelet.
15:53She has Diana's Cartier watch.
15:55Like, I feel like Harry is in a very safe place with jewelry.
15:58Smart man.
15:59But I can't help but think, like, Megan's someone who likes to think outside the box.
16:03Whereas Harry is maybe, like, Harry would just be happy with a new pair of rain boots.
16:08And Megan's there being like, oh, I've, like, adopted 18 rhinos on your behalf.
16:12OK, well, maybe she'll drop a gift guide for us.
16:18Oh, maybe.
16:18On the ads ever.
16:20Continuing her path to becoming the next Gwyneth Paltrow.
16:23Right.
16:24Although I very much doubt that Megan is going to be recommending those crystal eggs.
16:28Well, probably not.
16:29Although she and Gwyneth are friends now.
16:31So who knows?
16:32You never know.
16:32Maybe they yoni together.
16:34Maybe.
16:34The girls who yoni together remain friends forever.
16:38Yeah.
16:38Well, you know, we're going to have to watch the special and find out.
16:41Maybe we'll get a Gwyneth cameo.
16:42That would be great.
16:43I would actually love a Goop as ever crossover.
16:47Me too, actually.
16:48That would be kind of crazy and kind of fun.
16:49I was about to try and combine their brand names.
16:51And the best I could come up with my head in my head was Gas Ever.
16:54So I don't know.
16:56Goop ever.
16:57I've just.
16:57Anyone who was considering giving me a job is somebody.
17:00Reeling it back in.
17:01Deleted that email very quickly.
17:03They were like, Markle Tank?
17:04We're coming.
17:04Oh, wait.
17:05All right.
17:06No, I'll work on it, guys.
17:07Don't worry.
17:07We'll have.
17:08We have time.
17:08We've got a few.
17:09We've got a little while until they give us our holiday special.
17:12I'm going to start.
17:13Put on my thinking cap and get going.
17:15Brainstorm session.
17:17Charlie, as always, thanks for recapping the Royals with us.
17:19As ever.
