Emmy-winning 'Shōgun' actress Anna Sawai talks big wins, what's next and how she'll choose a role now that everyone is talking to her. She spoke to THR moments after her Emmy win on Disney post-Emmy carpet.
00:00Emmy winner, hold up that trophy. Let's see that.
00:03I can't believe it. What is happening? I don't know.
00:05You gave such an emotional and moving speech. What was going through your mind when they called your name and you were up there giving that speech?
00:11I couldn't believe it, but I also know that this trophy is not just for me. It's for everyone who worked on this show.
00:18I was supported by an amazing crew. The writers, they're so important. It's everybody, so I think I was thinking about them and I got really teared up.
00:30You gave such a nice shout out to your mom. What did it mean to get to bring her to the Emmys and have her there in the audience?
00:35It means everything. I just want to make her proud. She's not someone to ask for a lot.
00:39She doesn't say too much, but when she was coming to LA for this, she told me how excited she was and I saw her tearing up.
00:47I know that she's proud of me and that means the whole world.
00:50It was just such a huge night for Shogun. What has all the love and support for the show meant to you?
00:55It's huge. I think that getting love for our culture, for the people, that means a lot.
01:04You see that there's an acceptance, there's a curiosity, there's an interest for other people,
01:11different people that you don't necessarily understand but want to.
01:16I think that it's opening doors for our community, so yeah, that's huge.
01:21Who was the first person who texted you or called you after your Emmy win?
01:25I actually don't know because when I saw my phone I had 180 notifications.
01:30I don't know who the first person is. The first person I called was my sister.
01:34Oh, that's so amazing. And like I was saying, such a big night for the cast of Shogun.
01:38Who from the cast do you think is going to party the hardest at this after party?
01:42I feel like it might be Tokuma-san, who is probably the oldest cast, but he is such a young soul.
01:50I know that we're going to have an amazing time.
01:52And of course, so many people have seen the show now, so it's not a spoiler, but we will miss you so much in Season 2.
01:58Do you think there's any chance maybe your character could come back in a flashback, as a ghost?
02:03When I was talking to Hero a couple days ago, he said as a twin maybe he threw that out there?
02:07We love those jokes. I feel like I would say yes if they wanted me to,
02:12but the way that the story completed for her was perfect and I don't want to touch that, yeah.
02:18Following your performance on this show, what sort of doors has it opened for you in terms of roles?
02:23I don't know yet. I'm still looking for my next role.
02:26I'm shooting a second season of a show that I did, Monarch Legacy of Monsters, right now.
02:31But I'm looking for the next one.
02:33I feel like people are more interested in me and I also know what I can do well and what I want.
02:41So it's just a matter of finding the right match.
02:44What kind of role do you want to take on next?
02:46Just human roles. Things that are grounded, things that talk about life,
02:50things that will make you mad or sad or I don't know. It feels, you know, something intense.
02:55I want to do that.
02:56We can't wait to see it. Congratulations. Get into the after party. Have fun.
